- TestDriveNow.com review of the all-new 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 i 5-door Grand Touring by automotive critic Steve Hammes. MSRP as tested: $24,635. The MAZDA3 has long since been considered the drivers' alternative in the affordable compact segment.
Your Grand Touring didn't come with heated seats? That's not what I've seen in other reviews (or on Mazda's website).
I got this car mainly because I was driving a Mazda Protege before, and it handled really well and it was a good car to have. Very few problems in the 10+ years i had it. The 3 is the replacement for the Protege, and while I feel it's still under-powered, I love the new look and it still handles very well!
Here is is why I WILL BUY a Mazda3 over a Corolla, Civic, Impreza, or Sentra/Versa:
Able to get a car that has all of the following, all in one package:
- A geared automatic instead of a CVT,
- Nice black cloth interior
- 40mpg without having to go for a CVT
- Available hatchback model
- Analog speedometer, instead of a digital speedometer
Now the new 2015 VW Golf is even nicer and has all the great features the Mazda3 has, but I see way too many 'older' VW cars broken down on the side of the road, so I say "NO THANKS, I don't want to have to walk back home on a dark rainy night, I'll stick to Japanese for better reliability after 4 years." Now if you are MR deep pockets and can buy a new VW every 6 months, then go ahead, get one, but if you plan to keep your car for 12 years like I do: stay far far away from any German automotive products, especially VW.
why didn't you mention the higher trims get heated seats, LEDs, and fog lights?
best review of mazda 3 that I have seen so far :)
Thanks!

Thanks, Dave!

That swooping back styling looks like it cuts a lot of cargo room compared to previous models and Mazda really needs to consider putting some bigger wheels on this model. Those just look tiny.
Good points, I was thinking the same thing too, but then I found out that the version of the car that had a more vertical window during development had problems with dirt accumulation, so they tilted the window 45% so the wind would sweep away dirt and grime off the window instead of onto it.
The base model is for people who want low cost, and smaller tires cost less at Wal-Mart, that's why. You can go to a higher cost model and get larger wheels, but you will pay big $$$$ for that option.
I'll deal with the dirt. That's why it has a rear wiper with wiper fluid. And I know you can get bigger wheels on it, I was just trying to say that the base alloys could be about an inch bigger in diameter.
Hi steve, can you review the BMW 320i?
I'll put in a request.
+TestDriveNow.com can you also review the 2016Hyundai Azera

A turbo engine would go with 3 quite nice.
Theres a Mazdaspeed3 you know?
Rrright there is no mazdaspeed 3 for this gen you know?
Nicer interior than BMW ....
Mazda has gotten wayyyyy to pricey!!!!
And why are the wheels sooo small!!
Dave you can get the S Grand Touring with 18 inch wheels and I think this is always how the 3s were. However, I have a Mazda brochure from a dealership that shows two different wheel accessory options you can add at the dealership and both are 18 inch in diameter so there's that option. I think the biggest faux pas they made was in the Mazda i editions interior. The center mounted speedometer and electronic generated tach looks just HIDEOUS. The whole line should get the center mounted tach as it's a drivers car and would save them money in production costs.

if you want 18 inch wheels.... That model is pricey! I don't know why in USA, Canada you have to pay more for the hatch? In Australia, they are exactly the same price.
