Great video. I'd like to see this same exact test performed with supersonic ammo in the 110gr-125gr range. Not the 150gr rounds that just use surplus .308 bullets to make the ammo as cheap as possible which makes them not particularly good at being a supersonic round and not quite subsonic yet.

They will. I’m kinda surprised they used subs for the test, and it’s pretty well known subs (loads powders and specific projos can change this but generally speaking) lose around 100ish +/- FPS going from 16” down to the 7” barrels. The 5.5s are tested less, so nice data point, but most could’ve guessed the results from a practical standpoint. Supers are where the difference in barrel length make worlds of difference. You’re absolutely right that the beauty of the cartridge is being able to use BOTH. If you have a really short gun dedicated to subs, you might as well go with a pistol cartridge. Other than the better aerodynamics and bc of the projos (which really doesn’t come into much consideration for the distances subs will be easily placed on target), the major advantage to such a setup would be with the reliably expanding subsonic projectiles designed for the cartridge. But maaaaaaaan is that a niche and very expensive thing to feed. I’d argue that the projectile design features of the quality sub stuff negated the concerns of the difference in energy between all barrel lengths used here. Supers on the other hand would really wring out much more important data points to consider between them.
That’s actually what I try to do, pack all the info in less than 10 minutes and cut out the fluff. If I go over 10 minutes it’s because I felt it was very necessary. Thanks for watching.
I love 300blk just got a reloading setup so finally making it more practical it shouldn't be as expensive as it Is online considering it uses the most common brass and the most common caliber projectile
The Sig Rattler velocities are spot on for it's length. Remington 220 subs run 980fps. Perfect for suppressed work. 125 Sig Supers run like 2300fps. That 1:5 twist builds pressure.
Wow, real data. Very interesting results. I have zero experience with 300Blk, however, I’m taking a lot of interest in sub-sonic rounds for PDW’s. It’s more likely to be an indoor situation where ballistic noise would be magnified due to confined space. Excellent video, thanks.
A 5.56 with a 7" barrel is still strolling along at over 1800fps and delivering over 500 ft/pounds of energy. (even with the worst ammo) This is of course, quite a bit lower than optimal, but it still has enough pep in to put an ouchie on someone....Not sure why folks dwell on it being under-powered on the short barrels.... Good video - I was wanting to see the .300 blackout info. (I do not own one of these and am considering it with a 7" barrel) I have an AR with a 7" barrel, and I absolutely love it, and for me, it does everything that I expect of it. (Of course, I have no delusions about the effectiveness of it at distance.... When I bought it, the thought was it would be ideal to repel borders, so I never anticipated using it beyond about 25-35' at most)
Those close to 45 ACP velocities/energies is exactly why I'm not a big fan of subsonic .300 blk. I much prefer the supers because I'd rather have my rifle caliber perform more like a rifle than have pistol caliber energy. Ill sacrifice a few dbs for terminal ballistics any day. Thats just my mileage.
Totally understandable, Ill take the DBs, and I'll get a barrel that gets me closer to 357 Magnum energy. But it's whatever suits you, that is why there are so many choices. Thanks for watching!
@Barrett you're absolutely right about that. Thanks for clearing that up as I wasn't very clear in how I said it. But I prefer supers over subs, all things considered.
Just got back from a hog hunt using my Sig Canebrake in 300BLK. Used Winchester Deer Season ammo with the 150 grain Extreme Point (XP) bullet. I took a 90 pound boar at 70 yards and dropped it with 1 shot. I usually hunt hogs with a .308 to make sure of one shot kills. I love hunting and hogs are my preferred game as the removal of this invasive species is good for the environment and the meat is even better than store bought pork. I also like moose meat but living in the Southern US, we don't get a lot of moose here. I originally bought the Canebrake for home defense but I've been seeing many videos claiming the 300BLK out of the 5.5 inch barrel is only slightly more effective than a 9mm out of a PCC (e.g., CMMG Banshee, Sig Sauer MCX, etc.) Well, that just ain't true! The damage done by the 300BLK was massive! The animal died instantly and comparing the wound to that created by my buddy's hog (taken with a .308) with very similar shot placement, showed similar results. My next hog hunt will be with the new 300BLK AR I'm building with a 8 or 9 inch barrel. I don't think my .308 will ever be used again for hogs unless I intend to go after a trophy hogzilla.
Good to know. My buddy just picked up a Sic Canebrake. I wasn’t sure about the 5.5” barrel. Glad to hear real world success. I’m running a 9” made by AAC. Any clean kills with subsonic rounds?
@@scott2228 No subsonic hunts yet. I have a suppressor coming as soon as the ATF approves... Once I get the whisper-pickle I plan on going again. I keep seeing testing indicating 9 inches is optimal for 300 BLK. I contacted Sig to see if they have any plans to offer longer barrels for the MCX and the answer was "Not at this time..." Let me know what you think of the longer barrel! I have some 110 gr. Hornady Vmax rounds but I was getting sub 2 inch groups with the 150gr. loads at ~100 yards. I figured the 150gr. would have better terminal ballistics and it worked well. I'll definitely use the 110gr. rounds at some point.
@@scott2228 the 150s were available and grouped at around 2 inches @100 yards. Not as good as the .308 and at first I was not comfortable but I waited for the right presentation and it worked out.
Lil gun powder for the ultimate velocity and cfeblk for the because reliability cycling subs. (For 300black) P.s. I have got my Barnes tactx 120g (boat tail) loads going 2639 fps outta my Ruger ranch 300black (5000ft elv. In the dry high desert) that is my 300 yard mule deer load for next year. I shot a line of pumpkins this year full of water(to catch the projo) and it only lost the tip. Expanded to about a inch and the weight after the tip was 118.5grs total weight retention!!! Love that 300 black! I can't wait for 8.6 black! I just got done watching Qs live stream and I didn't win 😢. I would have answered the phone screaming at the tip of my lungs! But I guess we can't all win. But yeah the most fun caliber ever. To load and shoot is 300 black by far!!! Thanks for all you do Tim! And thanks again for turning me into a Q and 300blk O-holic! I thank you... My wallet does not 😆😆!!
Around 10.5" is the ideal length for .300 because the entire purpose of the caliber is that it can be effective at both suppressed/sub short and super/long, all with a simple ammo change.
Great vids! Waiting on my first suppressor to get out of jail. Dead Air Nomad Lt. This video makes me even more impatient to start playing around with it on my rifles.
Plenty of .45 ACP ammo out of a 5.5 inch barrel will have more than 460 foot pounds of energy. On top of that .45 ACP hollowpoints will have greater expansion than .300 BLK hollowpoints, which matters alot more than kinetic energy at that velocity. I struggle to see the point of super short .300 BLK AR pistols when PCC's exist and can do 95% of what the Rattler can do with cheaper ammo and even smaller size.
The powder burn rate will have an impact on those velocity drops per barrel length. My guess is that with a faster powder you will see your biggest velocity change from the 10.3" to the 8" barrel. Less so from 7 to 5.
Great video Tim. I'd love to see a 16" .300 BLK in the mix. I know most folks will scoff, but I think it would be cool to see how the velocities change. Since there is so little powder, and it's burned up way before exit, I wonder if the velocity increases due to barrel length will be minimal? Also, I know you love testing budget gear to see if it's worth the money (same as I like to do)... Any chance of doing an Arken scope review? For the money, I'm beyond impressed. I just ordered my 3rd SH4 Gen2 6-24x50 VPR MIL scope yesterday.
Your hypothesis on the velocity increase would be correct. A 16" barrel essentially suffers from diminishing returns, as the velocity gains are less and less after passing 12" or so (give or take a couple inches, as im not near quick load at the moment.
7.5" 556 is making a hit for PDW. Practicing with it over 300 makes monetary sense. I train 3/4 of my rounds on a 7.5" barrel and switch to 8.5" 300 blackout to finish training. If you shoot every week it makes a huge $ difference.
@@vaas-one sorry I retract my previous statement and will say it has proven for me to be the absolute best for my applications and needs for the past six years of shooting all sizes and calibers. I always come back to the 9 and 1:7.
.300 black out reaches full powder burn at 9 inches of barrel length. But not full velocity. A 16 inch barrel will have more velocity than a 9 inch barrel. At the expense of its ability for the ammo to stay subsonic.
I went 10.5" for a couple reasons over a 9" or 8.5" 1) I like the length for my long arms. I have. 6'6" wing span. 2) honestly - I like the aesthetics of a little longer rifle. 3) I personally think you have less opportunity for suppressed gun Jams with more loads bc they all will fully burn down that length barrel and therefore your consistency will be there if you tune the gas block for it 4) if I want a short ass gun, I'm getting a PCC in 9mm with the radial delayed blowback laser beam shooter. 5) if I switch the barrel to a 11.5"-12.5" 5.56 round, I wont need to change my hand guard and accessory locations.
Speaking of powder for 300 BLK - I have a Canebrake I'm breaking in, and it does feel like I'm lobbing rounds in at 125 yards during my last range day. I have 1500 220gr projectiles that I'm going to find a powder for that will get me a more complete burn out of the 5.5" barrel...hopefully. Ultimately my goal is to dial in Subsonic rounds close to 1000fps, specifically for the Canebrake.
AA…your channel is informative as well as very chill with your skilled editing…I look forward to watching 👍👍👍 😎😎😎…I built a .300BO 8.5” pistol that I’m going to SBR after the first of the year 😃😃😃
Pure barrel length change isn’t linear because you have to look at the ratio of loss. The 7” to a 5.5” is a 21% loss in effective length. For example a 2” drop from 20” to 18” isn’t as impactful as a 1” drop from 8” to 7” (10% vs. 12.5%)…

@@AlabamaArsenal I see you had a mic on. What was the difference in noise with the difference barrel lengths??
Love my canebrake with the Q half Nelson. Great video.
I bet that is a good combo! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video
Thanks brother!
What is rarely mentioned in these comparisons is muzzle flash.
And price
I wanted to see the difference with Supers..
A 5.56 with a 7" barrel is still strolling along at over 1800fps and delivering over 500 ft/pounds of energy. (even with the worst ammo)
This is of course, quite a bit lower than optimal, but it still has enough pep in to put an ouchie on someone....Not sure why folks dwell on it being under-powered on the short barrels....
So what length barrel would get you 357 energy?
@@AlabamaArsenalI’m shopping for a can for my 7.5 300blk AR. So confused. I would like to have a dependable sub and super shooter.
Any reason you went 150 grain? I’ve heard great things about the Barnes 110gr TAC-TX.
@@derflitermouse8976 I think they now have the MCX Virtus 9”
@@scott2228 the 150s were available and grouped at around 2 inches @100 yards. Not as good as the .308 and at first I was not comfortable but I waited for the right presentation and it worked out.
Love this series. Keep em coming
I had wondered about 300 Blk and loss of speed with very short barrels. Thanks for the video!
Nice scientific approach
Been looking for just this type of video. Thanks homie!
Thank you for watching man!
Lil gun powder for the ultimate velocity and cfeblk for the because reliability cycling subs. (For 300black)
Can you do a 300 Blackout twist rate video?? Please and thanks!
that SMG 45 tho......another great video Happy Thanks giving
Happy Thanksgiving brother! Thanks for watching!
Man I wish you’d of shot a couple different SuperSonics and seen what difference was and how well the 1-5 twist stabilize like 110 grain Barnes
I love this new series........
"I've been looking forward to this" 👍
Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
Absolutely proper video content! Great job guys thank you and keep up the great work!

Learned something new today…def earned a sub
Happy Thanksgiving brother and thanks for the videos!
Hope that you had a great Thanksgiving as well! Thank you for watching!
@@AlabamaArsenal absolutely. Keep up the good work
test performed with supersonic ammo
Amazing video. To the point and informative, answered my questions and more. Thanks!
See, this video wasn't too bad! Interesting that the shorty is only slightly better than a good 9mm for energy.
LOL Thanks for watching man!
Thanks for the video. Helpful for my future build!
Well put together video yall, thanks.
What about supersonic rounds
I’ve been pleasantly surprised with my Honey Badger out to 100y with Underwood 200gr subsonic.
They're great guns! Thanks for watching!
my DDpdw has been top notch with a surefire socom rc2
Great video! Love the .300 blk!
Me too! Thanks for watching!
Interesting video. Any chance of doing this again but with supersonic rounds?
great topic. Great consistent channel 💪🏾
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Nicely Done…Damn you got your hair did. 😜 My favorite length for 300BO is 12.5 for best do it all.
Excellent video my friend!!!
The powder burn rate will have an impact on those velocity drops per barrel length. My guess is that with a faster powder you will see your biggest velocity change from the 10.3" to the 8" barrel. Less so from 7 to 5.
Burn rate vs barrel length vs projectile wt, safety concerns, don’t blow your face off, intended purpose?
Ignorance for beginners.
Is the one in five twist rate make the subsonic more accurate in the 300blackout
Always have wondered about this topic. Thank k you
Comparing velocity drop with super sonic ammo would have been much more useful
I make a lot of videos and sometimes get things mixed up, but I’m pretty sure we did that as well. Thanks for watching
Great video. Just got my Canebreak, can’t wait to get out and shoot it!
My Sig Rattler is fast becoming my new favorite pistol maybe one I'll SBR it.
Does an 18" barrel work for 300 blackout for hunting???? Thank you.
Good idea on this series, great info.
It would have been interesting to calculate the effective range between the barrel lengths.
Mr.Gunsngear did a video a while back on the same subject.
I run a 16”
Your hypothesis on the velocity increase would be correct. A 16" barrel essentially suffers from diminishing returns, as the velocity gains are less and less after passing 12" or so (give or take a couple inches, as im not near quick load at the moment.
wouldn't a 16" increase the speed dangerously close to 1.125 fps, causing a sonic boom crack and defeating the purpose of subsonic ammo?
Once you have a 300 Black Out and a can, you need a JP Spring kit to make it really quiet.
Amen brother! Thanks for watching!
Or a Geissele braided spring and buffer.
What is a JP Spring kit? I’m new to ARs and trying to build my first AR as a 300BO
7.5" 556 is making a hit for PDW. Practicing with it over 300 makes monetary sense. I train 3/4 of my rounds on a 7.5" barrel and switch to 8.5" 300 blackout to finish training. If you shoot every week it makes a huge $ difference.
10.5 or 10.3 barrel is the lowest I would personally go with 5.56
You already know I’m watching all of em brother. Munching down on some bacon starting this one as we speak 🥓
Do y'all find very short barrel DI AR's to foul up real quick? I'm having problems with several.
Curious as to why you didn't try a 9" barrel when the .300 reaches full velocity at 9"? Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Why test what's in 40 videos already? You like watching people do the same thing, or give their own personal twist? You seem very boring.
3) I personally think you have less opportunity for suppressed gun Jams with more loads bc they all will fully burn down that length barrel and therefore your consistency will be there if you tune the gas block for it
4) if I want a short ass gun, I'm getting a PCC in 9mm with the radial delayed blowback laser beam shooter.
5) if I switch the barrel to a 11.5"-12.5" 5.56 round, I wont need to change my hand guard and accessory locations.
66" is short, unless your a really short person [edit:] nvm
@@SaikoW1lol he meant 6’6”

Point 3, and somewhat 4… I haven’t really thought of before. Good stuff.
Definitely going with the HB and Trash Panda for my 300blk set up eventually.
What i thought was weird is the new B&T integrally suppressed 300 blackout bolt action rifle has a 1 in 8 barrel twist rate.
Primary reason I don't have one. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this but I run a Maxim 5.5” shorty with supers - thinking of running the same test supersonic to see how supers change results?
Yeah, There definitely seems to be the interest so I guess we'll be doing a supersonic test soon. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great video.
That's gonna be totally doable, subs are loaded soft to stay sub out of longer barrels
At least perps breaking into my house can't outrun any of those.
That's right, all still guaranteed to ruin your day. LOL Thanks for watching!
AA…your channel is informative as well as very chill with your skilled editing…I look forward to watching 👍👍👍 😎😎😎…I built a .300BO 8.5” pistol that I’m going to SBR after the first of the year 😃😃😃
Glad to be a new sub, quality video.
Much appreciated! Thank yo for watching man!
You also went from bolt to semi from the 8 to 7 inch.
I run a Diamondback Tactical 10” 300 black out with a tucked suppressor to keep it shorter.
How do you like your diamond back
Pure barrel length change isn’t linear because you have to look at the ratio of loss. The 7” to a 5.5” is a 21% loss in effective length. For example a 2” drop from 20” to 18” isn’t as impactful as a 1” drop from 8” to 7” (10% vs. 12.5%)…
I been looking at these blackouts I like the silencer
