@Chad Klaren I wish I was as tough as you. Been killing birds 30 years. I quit using 3.5 inch shells when puberty ended. I don't need the biggest or baddest. I drop ducks all day with 2.75 shells. Sometimes I'll go to 3" on big Canadian Geese but as a rule I shoot 2.75 Bismuth
I'll tell you what Bobby, it's a breath of fresh air watching your vids. I've been in the game for years, having your ability to share info is priceless. I, along with several less tech savvy folk, are thankful that you take the time to share a lot of need to know info. Yor positive attitude, humility and humbleness makes for a real blessing. Thank you from Eastern Washington state. FULL choke = FULL limit. Been my mantra from the lead days and stuck with it. Brady Gies
I use an old 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch shell and I do fine. 3s are great I just grew up on 2 3/4 inch so I just still use them. High brass 2 3/4 are just as good as 3s in my opinion.
It all comes down to personal preference. I like having the capability to shoot the 3 1/2. It's also a mind game if you think you kill them better with 3 1/2 then keep shooting them. Also great video keep up the good work!
The best thing you can do is pattern your shotgun with different chokes to see which holds the best pattern. A full choke in my Berretta leaves big holes in the pattern. Modified seems to work the best with all different shot sizes for me.
Chris Haarstad how fast is your load through the full choke? Pellet deformation is common in hot loads and a full choke (loads over 1300fps). High speed steel is a sales gimmick. I'll take denser patterns with less fliers over speed any day.
lead shot deforms not steel shot and high speed steel shot hits harder. denser patterns and have high speed is what the 3.5" 12ga was made for cant have both in a 3" shell not enough room for shot and powder
Last year was my first year of actual consistent waterfowl hunting and I must say I am addicted. I went hunting at least 3 to 4 days out of the week and I only use a 3 1/2 inch shell probably five timesThroughout the entire season. I totally agree with you that you don’t need a 3 1/2 and she’ll kill ducks or Geese. I Actually just left a gun store about five minutes ago where I purchased me my first semi auto shotgun the Browning A5 we can swing chambered in 3 inches. Call can’t get your fast enough I am Addicted to waterfowl hunting. Thank you for all your tips and information you give Watertown hunters!!! You’re the man keep doing What you doing
My best load I have done is reloading high velocity ITX #4 shot. I think I use the 1 1/8 ounce bushing for three inch shells. The shot is almost as heavy as lead, soft, but holds up for higher velocities. It is nice to take down geese and ducks in one shot. Son has done good with 3” 20 gauge ITX as well. Tempted to cut 12 gauge loads to the 2 3/4” but concerned loss of velocity will not be as effective on range or geese.
Best advice ever!! Shoot your full choke. Period. Practice with it daily... that’s the biggest game changer in hunting with a shotgun. I mean if you are turkey hunting you’ll want an XX or even XXX full, but I always use a full choke when shooting ducks and geese.
I live in Alberta, and---while I generally use a dedicated 12 Gauge goose gun--I have downed Big Canada's with 3 inch 20 gauge with number 2 steel at 30 to 35 yards with it. Right load for your gun, with a well pointed shot will get it done.
I shoot 3” #3-4 x full Carlson’s chock tube. Only difference between close and far range for me is head shot close body shot far. What I found most people are missing because they’re afraid to shoot #4-6 shot.
I shoot a Stoeger M3500 with 3.5 in. Hevi Metal #2s for mallards and big Canada’s all year in Ohio normally in sub zero temps. I actually save shells by doing this bc the plumage on the birds up here is so heavy that you just can’t kill birds stone cold without that 3.5 in. setup. We only hunt fields and the Ohio River big water so a lot of shots are passes at 40+ yards. Early goose season in September however I shoot the cheapest 3 inch I can find bc the birds barely have feathers. It basically all depends on how you hunt and where at. Great video man.
Team dux from upstate NY I run a mossberg with a stock modified and 2-3/4" or 3" bb federal blue box and I can repeatedly drop birds out to 50 yards and even farther sometimes but like you said practice is key. Keep up the videos brother I love em
I love my Patternmaster Goose tube. I was shooting trap at the 27 yard line with standard 1 1/8 oz loads. It was turning clays into black dust at 45 yards. For Canada's I like to put Hevi Shot B pellets down the tube if money isnt tight.
When I started to really get into bird hunting I bought a stoeger m2000 (had 500 bucks to my name) that didn't shoot the 3.5 did just fine for the most part. Shot a friends Franchi and fell in love, bought the Intensity for the option of running 3.5. I think I've used one box of 3.5 in the field in the 4 years I've hunted with it. The only knock I can really have on my Franchi is the factory chokes didn't work for me. Bought a Carlson choke set and I always left my Long Range in. Even when creek jumping and upland hunting. Run 2s and BBs like you said.
I been hunting my whole life but never waterfowl until this month, I fell in love after my first teal went down. I'm addicted now!!! I'm going to do more waterfowl hunting then bow hunting this year.. you're channel definitely catches me up, also great sense of humor
I shoot 3 inch #2s hevi steel from teals to snows with a extreme range hevi shot choke tube and have no issues with birds up here in minnesota. Great video.
BobbyGuyFilms crumpled them from 5 feet to 50 yards....only draw back is got a bunch of teal or ringbills up close hugging decoys and jump up and knocking a few down you do blow the crap out of them. Had a flock of gwt last year come bombing in and without thinking jumped up shot and the first teal took a full pattern and actually shot back out from the force of the pattern hitting it. But I refuse to shoot 3.5 inch. There's no need for it imo unless your turkey hunting.
Here in ND as long as you’re not taking 50-70yd pot shots at giant and greater Canada’s you don’t need anything more than a 3” shell. I use a 20ga for everything nowadays and it works just fine as long as I’m selective with my shots.
Went and shot clays with my Mossberg 930 and tested out the IC, M, and F and was dusting the clays with the F. Ordered a Briley flush mounted IM and plan on using the crap out of that choke. Got some #6 steel to try on some early teal.
I agree with you about shooting a lot makes you better. I use to struggle on hitting birds but now getting a double is almost easy. This past snow goose season my dad and I bought 10 boxes of shells. Went through all 250 shells and started using 4 shot for the last day lol
I pick and choose what gun I bring. I have 10 gauge for when I wanna shoot honkers from a long ways and then when I’m shooting ducks I grab the 3 inch 12 gauge. Great info Bobby!
Good informational video. I made this mistake for the last 6 years until this last year when I used only 3” shells in 2 shot. Doubled my shooting percentage Bc I finally got used to one choke, one shell, and picked my shots out.
Btw, with ITX, I use either modified or improved modified. You will save $$ with ITX, but not sure I would use it on a high volume snow goose hunt. No need to swapping out loads between ducks and geese.
Hey Bobby should you use the shell your more comfortable with. I live in new york and I was using 3.5 inch shells with my benelli pump but only killed my limit one day a week
I know a old gent here that has a 8 ga shotgun that belonged to his Grandfather. Thing is a double gun with external hammers it fired a 3.25 in, 3.75 in and 4 in brass casing it would kill ducks out of a flock at 130 yards he said. Now I have a Remington Model 1100 12 ga. 30 inch barrel choke is full its only chambered in 2.75 inch, with #2 steel I can take ducks and geese out to 50 yards.
Been hunting all types waterfowl for 55 years.Tried 10 guage ,12 guage 3.5 .My go to is 3in. Super 90 Benelli with #2 shot and improved modified choke for northern ducks and big geese. It waxes thier ass at 40 yds no problem.
Your awesome man . I have a lot of respect for you . I’m very sorry about Fred . At least he has a good family to belong to , worst comes to worst he will still have love , and that’s all our companions want . Keep making the informative videos ... it’s great .
BobbyGuyFilms Ah Bro wish we lived near each other so we could do that video together. That's been my number one request from people is to do that breakdown and is the video I'm currently working on.
I have the exact same opinion full choke with 3in is the way to go. Another great video Bobby keep up the good work. P.S I think the yo yo yo yo at the beginning of videos is you Signature style.
i just found your channel... I am glad you said what you said about the choke, my vinci only shoots 3" also and I live in ND where we do get big honkers, I watch guys shooting 3.5" shells all the time wing birds because they don't shoot a full choke or the more than full chokes made by carlsons. I personally shoot the black cloud choke and love it, from partridge to cranes, the only thing I take it out for is doves.
you are right about full choke, i have remington 870 and when i started shooting with it i lost many birds because of modified choke so i installed carlssons full choke and i started to get ton of birds😅 sorry for bad english, im from finland.
I load my own 2 3/4 shells! Guess what I rarely use 3 inch anymore. You are exactly right practice and practice more, then you get confidence in your ability. That simple thing will make more difference than anything else. I've even limited out on Geese with my 20ga.
Well yeah you can shoot a limit of anything with just about any shotshell with the right loads I've done work on wood ducks and geese with 410 3 in and 5/8 oz 7.5 tss has DROPPED Canada geese at 60 yards it's about shooting what you're comfortable with cause that's what you shoot well
I shoot the franchi affinity too and it’s the best shotgun I’ve ever owned and I even had the SBE1 made by H&K and it was just too expensive to do the things I do with my franchi
My hunting buddy only uses Kent 3" 3's 1550 fps with a modified choke and that's all he needs, I've seen him make some 60 + yard shots and even kill two birds with one shot many times. . What works best for me are Kent 3.5 3's 1625 fps with a ported Hevi shot mid range choke. I think it's really what works best for you and what you feel the most confident using.
Hey man, my son Marco is 14 and is hook/line/sinker with bird hunting. IYHO, should he just stick to 3'' shells for geese? 3.5'' might me too much for him, right? Thanks, MJ
Bobby, good vid. Soldier in stationed in VA and duck seems to be pretty popular. Never done any waterfowling but love to hunt and love the outdoors. Hoping to learn more and maybe even get out in the next season or two.
I'm in canada late season goose hunting you get the big honkers. I use what ever is on sale 3.5 or 3 inch. I also take into consideration who I'm hunting with. Some guys I hunt with try and reach some guys like them close. At the end of the day nothing drops a big goose like a 3.5 inch 10 gauge
I also avidly shoot skeet and sporting Clay's. Every Tuesday and Friday nights skeet and Sundays 100 round sporting clay course. All shot with full choke.
Is there a full that is recommend for steel and lead? All full I've seen day not to use steel on full... modified apparently is supposed full pattern steel... but I haven't patterned it myself to see
Keep the yo yo yo's and the info coming, you were a big resource for me i started waterfowl 3 years ago. Also the reason i picked up a camera. - nate from seeitalloutdoors
I am trying to figure out if I should make my first shotgun a m3500 and m3000. I would like the option for 3.5 just because why not? I live at Grizzy Island California and want to hunt pheasants, duck, and deer to start off.
From the time I was 12 to 16 I shot all my birds with a youth model 20ga 870 with 2 3/4 #2s if u can shoot and get them in closer then 50 yds then u can kill em
Odd question but I have an 870, stock. It's not supposed to take 3.5 inch shells but I was able to squeeze one in. It's a magnum 00-buck with the same fps as a 2 3/4 shell. I haven't shot it but would this damage the shotgun? Thanks!
I’m shootin 20ga 3” alllllll day! Full choke. And like you when I changed back and forth i was having mixed luck. I went back to the full choke full time and I was deadly!
We shoot sandhills all the time with 3” 2 shot. It knocks em dead. Skybusters keep the 3 1/2 inch shell manufacturers in business and they still don’t kill nothing
Joshua Darnell..What choke do you use with your shotgun. I've been shooting an old 12g bolt action goose gun for 20+years. Just purchased my first 12g pump that I can put chokes in. We are doing pass shooting.
Bobby I run a franchi and benelli in the U.K. and need more then half choke what brands do you recommend where using steel but so are you in the US If in right ?
I always used 2 and bb as well, two years I made a switch to #1s and throw them at everything, with no notice of any disadvantaged with big/little ducks or geese and seems to mayyyyyyyybe kinda sorta be working better on geese , my only theory for this is perhaps the slightly smaller projectile is penetrating better/deeper and is big enough to still carry out that bit better than 2s 3s 4s or 5s like a bb or bbb would , just feels like the #1s have given me such a great "happy medium" and is so simple.
I reload 3.5" because the manufacturers don't seem to understand the reason for the 3.5"... Added VELOCITY. You don't need anything heavier than 1-1/4 for ducks/geese. 3.5" 1-1/8 going 1600+ FPS with #2 for ducks and BB for geese.
Awesome video bud, the reasoning behind your knowledge is what's helpful to me man. I need a full choke and to shoot more, but the difference in shot size was awesome. I'm hoping to take geese and ducks this year with a family heirloom shotgun that can't shoot bigger than 2 3/4 shells so hopefully I can't find the right load to make to happen. Thanks for the awesome video ye again sir.
Hey Bobby, you should pick up some fiocci steel max shells from Scheels. They're only $10 a box and they're awesome. I've been using them for the last two years on ducks and geese and my numbers have increased dramatically.
@@christophermommaerts6642 yep I just started out a few months back and there is not a whole lot of info on full choke and steel shot but I've heard from local gunsmiths in my area that it can be dangerous 👍
I'm gonna gave to say he is definitely using steel shot with his full choke since its federal law that you have to use non toxic shot for wildlife, I mean he could be using bismuth but kinda doubt it.
There's a lot of information out there saying you shouldn't use a full choke with steel shot bigger than 4ish. I guess the steel shot can get pinched in the choke and cause you'r barrel to bulge behind the choke due to pressure. Your thoughts?
I shoot a benelli super black Eagle 12 with a 3 1/2 inch Number four shot with a full choke, unless in shooting doves, then I shoot two and three-quarter inch number eight shot.
3 1/2" do not pattern worth a crap in my SBE2. Factory crio modified with federal blue box hold the best pattern FOR ME. I have tested patternmasters and carlsons, but the ole factory choke works best for me.
ALL DUX MERCH AVAILABLE HERE- bit.ly/AFFDUX THANKS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT!

Are the camo hoodies fleece lined? I remember you having a fleeced lined hoodie and I’m gonna need one

Only reason I use 3.5 inch shells
...is there aren't any 4 inch shells in 12 gauge
JD Kirane I like the way you think
You beat me to that comment.
I just use a 10ga it dose them dirty
@@nikwietheoutdoors411 what shells?

I use an old 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch shell and I do fine. 3s are great I just grew up on 2 3/4 inch so I just still use them. High brass 2 3/4 are just as good as 3s in my opinion.
I love number 2s even for geese. With a full choke them smaller pellets really cut through the down feathers
It all comes down to personal preference. I like having the capability to shoot the 3 1/2. It's also a mind game if you think you kill them better with 3 1/2 then keep shooting them. Also great video keep up the good work!
I agree 100%. Up here in northern Minnesota I drop plenty of greaters with a 3” BB shot and full choke. Best set up for sure, and good video bud!
One thing to consider that's almost more important than your pattern is your shot string
lead shot deforms not steel shot and high speed steel shot hits harder. denser patterns and have high speed is what the 3.5" 12ga was made for cant have both in a 3" shell not enough room for shot and powder

What is the best shotgun to shoot ducks and geese?
Some of my best hunts have been with 2 3/4
I also avidly shoot skeet and sporting Clay's. Every Tuesday and Friday nights skeet and Sundays 100 round sporting clay course. All shot with full choke.
Is there a full that is recommend for steel and lead? All full I've seen day not to use steel on full... modified apparently is supposed full pattern steel... but I haven't patterned it myself to see
What barrel length do you run on the Franchi, 26 or 28? Does it matter that much?
Keep the yo yo yo's and the info coming, you were a big resource for me i started waterfowl 3 years ago. Also the reason i picked up a camera. - nate from seeitalloutdoors
This info works for crow hunting too, to many guys use a open choke with small shot size. Use the full choke with #5s and watch your kill rate double.
low brass number 6 lead works better than any kind of steel
Agreed but that's illegal here and #9 tungsten does better than lead #4
Yeah lead is illegal in a lot of states because it is a toxic metal and can spread disease or poison birds and humans
I am trying to figure out if I should make my first shotgun a m3500 and m3000. I would like the option for 3.5 just because why not? I live at Grizzy Island California and want to hunt pheasants, duck, and deer to start off.
Interesting take on the full choke. I use improved cylinder for almost everything, even big geese sometimes.
CRAM Outdoors IC is just like a skeet or trap choke it doesn’t hold a tight pattern at all
you should do a video on whats in you blind bag, the wants and needs
It’ll be coming
Always include toilet paper and trail mix!
I could use some knowledge on shot size and what to choose for ducks. Why #3 or say 2 or 4. Velocity, important?
And we kill giant honkers here in Iowa and we kill them at 35-40 yards with 3 inch 2's but I really like running bb's with full choke
Agreed!!!!
Nice vid Bobby I never shoot 31/2s either I had an old man tell me once if there close enough you can kill em with any thing. Keep em coming bobby
Very bold and true statement!!! He’s right
Very true! Just dropped a couple honkers with 12 gauge 2 3/4 #2 shot out of a modified choke.
From the time I was 12 to 16 I shot all my birds with a youth model 20ga 870 with 2 3/4 #2s if u can shoot and get them in closer then 50 yds then u can kill em
I shoot a Remington 870 super mag with an extended modified choke and it patterns good at 30-40 yards
Odd question but I have an 870, stock. It's not supposed to take 3.5 inch shells but I was able to squeeze one in. It's a magnum 00-buck with the same fps as a 2 3/4 shell. I haven't shot it but would this damage the shotgun? Thanks!
That’s a big no!! If it’s not chambered for 31/2 inch shells do not use them
I’m shootin 20ga 3” alllllll day!
Hahahhahaahhaha
Joshua Darnell..What choke do you use with your shotgun. I've been shooting an old 12g bolt action goose gun for 20+years. Just purchased my first 12g pump that I can put chokes in. We are doing pass shooting.
Kc Rains we use full choke most of the time for geese and sand hills
Kent 3in 1 3/8 oz 2 shot or bb kills everything!
Keep up the YoYoYo! My son and I love it :) He is almost 3 and anytime I'm watching TH-cam he says "let's watch the YoYo Guy!" haha love it.
That’s amazing to hear man
I reload 3.5" because the manufacturers don't seem to understand the reason for the 3.5"... Added VELOCITY. You don't need anything heavier than 1-1/4 for ducks/geese. 3.5" 1-1/8 going 1600+ FPS with #2 for ducks and BB for geese.
So any thoughts on using turkey chokes?
Put some 2 3/4 inch. 1 3/8 BB Lead. Watch them honkers fold then 🤣🤣🤣 works better then any steal load you got
Bobby: you don't need 3 and a half shells
Me: yay
Bobby: unless you're in Minnesota
Me: :(((((((
lmao
Is the Carlson Cremator long range the choke you are using?
Yes
Awesome video bud, the reasoning behind your knowledge is what's helpful to me man. I need a full choke and to shoot more, but the difference in shot size was awesome. I'm hoping to take geese and ducks this year with a family heirloom shotgun that can't shoot bigger than 2 3/4 shells so hopefully I can't find the right load to make to happen. Thanks for the awesome video ye again sir.
What name brand choke tubes do you use?
Carlson
@@BobbyGuyFilms ok thanks
I just got a pattern master goose for my benelli because I was tired of wounding ducks. We'll see how it goes.
I use a modified choke and it works really well for pigeon and pheasant
Do you use the same choke for 2 3/4 for doves?
Hey Bobby, you should pick up some fiocci steel max shells from Scheels. They're only $10 a box and they're awesome. I've been using them for the last two years on ducks and geese and my numbers have increased dramatically.
Will Remchoke full choke work with 3” steel BB Shot in an 1187 Premier gold trigger?
Never use full choke with steel!
@@fishin3196 Got it, using "modified" now. Thanks
Nice appetizing intro. Where my house is I see "black sun", not with starlings, but with greylag geese. Tasty sight.
There's a lot of information out there saying you shouldn't use a full choke with steel shot bigger than 4ish. I guess the steel shot can get pinched in the choke and cause you'r barrel to bulge behind the choke due to pressure. Your thoughts?
I use #4 Buck for snow geese when they are in our wheat fields. Literally rains geese.
All about what works best
Thanks for the info.
The one thing hardly anyone mentions is what brand or model choke they are using.
What brand of full choke to you run? I was told not to shoot steel in my franchi with a full choke. Great video man!
I'm always able to get my geese within 30 yards with a modified with 3" BBB
Late season sitting outside of the decoys 3” are a dang life save for geese. That’s when a 3.5” kicks ass
Do a video on how to get ducks to decoy better
I just started using a fullchoke on my Winchester XS4 running 2 3/4 #3's i still hit em from 35 40 yds no probs
