When I switched to 3.5" Blackcloud BB's, my kill rate went way up. The extra shot in the pattern really helps. But, the caveat is; that particular load patterns well in my gun, a Bennili Nova pump, but it may not in yours. Always test the load to your particular gun setup.

Hey Bobby! Love you films man. I’ve been patterning shotguns for 15 years now and I have found that although you may get a few more pellets in a 3.5” shell, the pressure difference equates to patterns with close to identical pellet counts on paper. Since you can get speeds that are incredibly similar and the velocity advantage is basically lost by 40 yards, I find that shooting 3” is similar or sometimes better since 3” shells usually pattern better. Don’t get me wrong I have multiple 3.5” guns but I haven’t shot a 3.5” in years.
Btw, if we are comparing a 1-1/4oz BB to 1-3/8oz BB, it’s only 8 or 9 pellets. Roughly 88 to 97.
Keep doing what you’re doing! Good luck

Thank you so much for this comment. You saved me so much typing haha. In all the testing I've done with chronographs, pattern boards, and barrel pressures, there has never been a reason to choose a 3.5 over a 3. Unless your trying to bust through an elephant's skull at 5 feet... I got so frustrated with trying to find a manufactured shot shell that had a +/-50fps average, with consistent patterning, that I went to load my own shells now. And the only shells that were coming across the chronograph at even close to the advertised speeds were black clouds. Everything else was 100-150fps slower on a 20 shot average then advertised.

Most of the 3.5" BB loads I have patterned have had an average of 100 - 109 pellets. Odd ball loads like Blind Side and Hevi-Metal (old version) have a few more.
    Winchester Drylok 1.5 oz = 106
    Estate 1.375 oz = 100
    Black Cloud 1.5 oz = 104
    Federal Speed Shok 1.5 oz = 109
    Hevi-Metal 1.5 oz = 136

A pellet of the same given size out of a 3” shell or a 3.5” shell doing the same velocity is no different. The only advantage is more pellets. I have used both. This last season I went back to 3” shells as I just didn’t kill ducks or geese anymore dead with 3.5”. In fact, I made some of my more impressive shots this season with 3”. The recoil is easily twice the amount as well. I suppose you have to decide if you think it’s worth it especially the cost. But as I always say, you do you.

Agreed. I'm not that great a shot, although I try to practice on clays as much as I can. I have made enough shots with 3.5's on geese and now ducks (when struggling to get birds in close) to know they'll put'm in the bag. I had a horrible season this year shooting this new Benelli that only shot 3" shells (sold that thing, gun fit/point of impact issue....sent it back to Benelli, they said ~"unable to duplicate POI issue"). I have another Benelli just like it that shoots unbelievable/fits awesome......wierd. I digress. Last 2 weeks of the season, I was like, "hell w/ this. I'm done with this gun."
Went back to my sledgeamatic Maxus. Said myself, "Self we're not messing around now." - (started using cheap 3.5 " Win 1-1/4 #2's (1625fps)) last 2 weeks of duck season and just started hammering the ducks, stone-cold dead. Rough season, but ended with some consolation.
Take care fellas, good luck next year.

Gas operated gun. Ported over bored Barrel bored with extended forcing cone, Pachmayr decelerator or limbsaver pad , Mercury Recoil Reducer, proper fit, will eliminate that muzzle jump. Super X2 Winchester or 935 Mossberg would be a good candidate to start with. All of the lightweight guns are going to have tremendous muzzle jump causing lots of Miss shots at long range.

The ammo manufacturers want you to believe they do but they don’t. Bigger payload equals lower velocity, much lower in some instances, and far less energy per pellet. Yes there are more pellets per shot than a 2 3/4 “ but how many of those extra pellets actually find their way to the kill zone. Not many more if any more at all. Less velocity, less energy, maybe the same number of pellets on target, far more recoil and a much higher price. Go ahead and keep making ammo manufacturers richer if you want but I’ll stick with what works just fine

We pattern all the shells we shoot. We mostly shoot big shot. We want to body kill and not just break wings. If you are shooting 40 yds or less yds the shot size is not so critical. Beyond that you need energy. BBB or larger, energy is what kills. BBBs stack almost perfectly in the bore diameter of the 12. In the 10 Ts and TTs give great patterns, 50 to 55 in a 30 in. circle at 50 yds. After all our patterning and field experience, if I had to use a 12, I would use all BBBs. Less chasing with a 50yd+ gun and a bit longer if you can shoot. My hunting buddy is one of those freaks of nature who can hit anything at any range. Shot size and pattern and energy of the shot are the limiting factor. With big shot, you only need one or two to smoke em.

Most 3" shells can only handle a 1-1/4 oz payload. So that would be 91 pellets of #BB... A 3.5" Black Cloud with a 1-1/2 oz payload of #BB has 110 pellets. Not a crazy amount of difference. Pellet count gets much higher to where you were saying around #1 and #2... #1 has 153 pellets and #2 186 pellets in a 3.5" 1-1/2 oz load.
Realistically, a 3" shell with 1-1/4 of #2 will do the job fantastically as it has 155 pellets in the pattern.
I think what it comes down to is velocity, which is why I hand load 3.5" shells. Bobby, if you want to see what a 3.5" shell can do, load it with the same payload as a 3" but with higher velocities... That's where ammo manufacturers get the 3.5" wrong IMO (I'm talking 1600-1700 FPS)

3.5” 12 gauge loads stuff 10 gauge loads through a 12 gauge bore, this increases recoil and the length of the shot string, nothing more.

I use fed blue-box. Have never missed a bird I could blame on the shells. I shoot an im choke and switched to 2 3/4 so they were lighter when I did walk in hunts. I don't get alot of geese but again have never missed a bird because of a shell.

It would be awesome if you set up a couple target boards at 40 yards and displayed the difference between 3" and 3½" shells. Also I am curious your take on thre higher end loads like bismuth. Is there and added benefit?

  • @jcarry5214

My question is aside from a marketing standpoint why are there 3.5 inchers when the 3s still have space taken up by wads (wads, not cups)? I know the wads do important work but would they shoot worse if more cushion was gone? Am I mistaken about how much space there is? I guess premium shells have those extra thick shot cups so there's a lot of factors including chamber pressure, but still... are they better in proportion to the extra money? Maybe they are, I'm just curious. The guys I've talked to usually say they'd rather spend the money on standard length tungsten than longer steel.

I shoot 3” till about dec 1st then switch to 3.5 till the end. Basically earlier I shoot a lot of little ducks and such. Then dec on lots of mallards and specks and honkers. Just an idea. To try. It seems to work for me

just bought the retay masai mara about a week ago. not a 3 and a half but figured thats fine. Do you think they make a big enough deal to spend a couple extra hundred dollars on a gun?

    • @neonwhitea.1548
      @neonwhitea.1548 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Caleb Slaughter I ran a 3 inch Masai Mara this year and it was a fantastic gun, I’m probably going to buy a 3.5 inch next year just because I have the money but I had no problem with the 3, also my 3 inch is the nice wood one so I don’t want to put in duck blinds again next year
