    HIGHLY recommend trying BOSS. Switched to them this year, went from 3 inch 2 shot steel to 2.75 inch 5 shot BOSS shells and were killing them out further than with steel. Much better

      That's the only ammunition I use when I'm not shooting my own loads. I've dissected a lot of different shells and Federal Speed-Shok was most consistent. Kent is very consistent as well. In the Winchester Xpert HV's a lot of pellets were dimpled and droplets. I also dissected Hevi-Metal, 3 1/2" and some pellets were also dimpled and not uniform. This was a few years ago.

    Been there, done that, with the Environmetal Inc. products. In all honesty, their best waterfowl loads are their all steel loads, or their all tungsten loads (but who can say it's reasonable to spend $6 to $10 a shot on wingshooting shells).
    From watching the patterns a couple times from your shotkam footage, It did not appear the patterns with the Hevi-Hammer load were optimal. This is not uncommon for mixed material shotshell loadings like Hevi-Hammer. This is especially true of a bismuth-steel blend, as you are taking a rigid and non-malleable shot type and blending it with a soft and malleable shot type. Upon firing, setback of the load occurs, which with steel does nothing. With Bismuth, however, if the shot is not cushioned by buffer or a power-piston wad it will compress and deform. Contrary to marketing from Environmetal Inc., non-round and deformed pellets do not fly through the air in a straight path, nor efficiently. That said, with deformed pellets at the top of the shot column, they will interfere with the consistency of the pattern as the charge goes down range. essentially, the steel shot is beating the hell out of the bismuth and the in turn the bismuth is knocking holes in the steel shot's pattern. boom, you have a load that is almost useless unless choked just right. But that brings us to part two of why loads like Hevi-Hammer are a bad idea and all marketing gimmick.
    For one, the Hevi-Hammer loading is not an even-split/balanced loading (such as old hevi-metal once was with a supposed 50/50 blend of steel/hevi-shot). They claim it is a 85/15 split of steel and bismuth shot. With a 1oz #3 shot load in the 20ga, that means there is approximately 130 steel pellet and 15 or 16 bismuth pellets on top of the steel (assuming the bismuth is actually a #3 sized pellet). So in effect, the Bismuth in that load is doing nothing for you with only 15/145 pellets being a higher density material. Top that off with the fact that the 1oz load that Environmetal loads for the 20ga only pushes out at about 1,350 FPS box label, that means you get less energy per pellet down range with a material (steel shot) that needs velocity to perform since it suffers from the low density of 7.9gcc (versus bismuth with 9.6gcc density). It is no wonder you saw a marked improvement in using the 7/8oz 1,550 FPS #2 Fed blue box load over the Enviro load; there was a better pattern and better energy/penetration on target.
    Bottom line is that shot types like Bismuth, ITX-10, ITX-13, hevi-shot, and TSS all are better Non-tox shot types than steel by leaps and bounds. But when you mix them in with steel shot or each other, you are more likely to blow patterns and have a less desirable effect than just running one material shot in a load. The reality of the situation is, If you are not going to shoot a higher density material and you are going to shoot steel, you need to select the correct weight charge and pellet size for you intended hunting scenario and push that pellet at minimum 1,400 to 1,450 FPS at the muzzle.
    Environmetal products are, in my opinion, all marketing and made cheap/sold expensive. I no longer shoot steel loads, period. I shoot Boss out of all my guns/gauges, but if I were to shoot steel again I would select a different brand than Enviro.

    12ga 3" 1¼oz BB @1450fps from a .705" choke.
    Shoot your best.
    But the most important thing: Stay on the same bird til she folds.
    It takes discipline. Otherwise, you're gonna cripple a bunch of birds.
    The coyotes gotta eat too but . . .
    If you cripple a bird, keep shooting the same bird.
    And don't call somebody off a shot while they're trying to kill a cripple. That bird ain't comin back. It's leaving to die somewhere away from where it got shot.

    • @buck19
      @buck19 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hevi publishes all their density ratings. bismuth to steel is only a difference of 1.8g/cc, with bismuth at 9.6g/cc. hevi does make hevi 13 and hevi18. the density gains in the hammer are negligible even if it were 50/50

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@buck19 that's an over 20% difference between the two materials. That increase in density is not negligible at all, and it shows in ballistics testing.
      A big reason the Hevi-Hammer load is a total joke is that it is a bismuth-steel mix (which does nothing for pattern density nor terminal effect when only 15% of the charge is actually bismuth) and that its going too slow for the steel pellets to have the energy needed to be terminally effective down range. At 25 yards and in, 1,350 FPS start for steel is ok on small birds and ducks (not honkers). Out past 30 though, it has lost a lot of velocity/energy when compared to denser materials of the same or smaller shot size with the same start velocity and becomes very much a crippling load.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevechmiel6016 hevi-X has been a very inconsistent performer for me. The non-round pellets F-up every chance at consistent patterns and the variance in density from 9.2 to 10.3 gcc based on the batch you buy is a big problem too with consistent performance on the birds. I’ve settled on Boss copper plated bismuth for everything, whether I know i’m killing them at 15 yards or 55, i just want better on the birds. I’ve dumped Hevi entirely; they don’t deserve our money as sportsman in my opinion.

      @-B_G- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Illinois Outdoors- ??? “20 gauge and a 12ga have the same amount of bb’s the only difference is the exit velocity”??? Bro I reload shotgun shells. That statement couldn’t be much more wrong. A 3 in 20 ga steel load contains about a 1/2 to 3/4 oz less “bb’s” aka shot than a 3 in 12 ga load of the same shot size. The velocity of a 12 and 20 are close but the 12 usually is faster by a cpl hundred feet per sec which makes little to no difference. For comparison there are about 125 steel # 2 per oz. A standard steel 3 in 20 ga is usually 1 oz to 1 1/4, A 12 ga is usually anywhere from 1 1/4 to 2 oz of shot, if you do the math you can easily see the 12 ga is going to give you many more pellets almost every time.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@addisonestes1219 that would be a bore obstruction, not for the load. Most likely debris got down the barrel or a blooper load where the wad did not clear the barrel. I would say a soft strike caused the primer to fizzle and only partially burn the powder in the hull, causing a blooper if it was due to a stuck wad and not debris. Bad primers and powders in a load are not very common, but they can happen though. Hard to say what happened in that situation.
      Black cloud patterned well for me as well, but I have never really liked Kent's offerings. Their bismuth loads are decent, but they are over-priced and they market the hell out of it with the old "gotta have a box with pheasant on it to be upland loads, and one with a duck on it for waterfowl" kind of BS when both loads are good for either. BUT, if the shell you choose puts a good pattern down range and sends the shot out a a velocity that makes the shot material do what it needs to, that's what you want.
