Another fun song from Jerry Jeff is Up Against The Wall Red Neck Mother which was written by Ray Wylie Hubbard who is another artist I’m sure y’all will love.

Jerry Jeff Walker is best known for "Mr. Bojangles". On one occasion, Walker came across a homeless man playing "Mr. Bojangles" and gave him all the money he had on him. Walker passed away in October 2020 at the age of 78. R.I.P.

This is kinda an inside joke. "This Guy" refers to Guy Clark, Who wrote some of hs songs. The "nun" that called him up was Gary P. Nunn, a band member who also had a recording career.

Jerry Jeff was a national treasure known as the "Gypsy Songman", and I was blessed to see him perform several times back in the 70s. Without reading all the comments below, I'm sure someone has already mentioned that he wrote and first recorded "Mr. Bojangles".
There are a lot of great ones on this particular album (Ridin' High), but you may want to check out "Jaded Lover" (a personal favorite).
Thanks so much for reacting to this one.

This is the music I listened to in 70s with the country craze that went along with the movie Urban Cowboy and line dancing... Waylon, Willie, Merle, Jerry Jeff, Bobby, Hank Jr., Kris, David Allan Coe...and so on. Jerry Jeff is the best and yes, he performed out in Luckenbach as well as the Gruene Dance Hall.

I’ve already commented on this reaction, thinking about JJW rekindled a memory. I took my mom and dad to see JJW back in 1975 at the Austin Opry House. My dad would have been 60 and he fussed and cussed at me for the next 30 years about how loud it was. He quit at that point after dementia started to set in. We got him a little portable CD Player and a few CDs. He listened to it all day long and #1 on his playlist was JJW’s Greatest Hits. It seems I wasn’t pissin in the wind all those years after all 😊

Ive never heard this one. Definitely a drinking song!
Walker had a hit in 1972 with, ironically, a song he did not write. "LA Freeway" (written by Guy Clark) was a great song that contributed to the growing country-rock genre at the time. I love that old tune & Walker's voice was perfect for it.
Yes, his song, Mr Bojangles, was released by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1970. They had a big top-40 hit with it (it reached #9 on US chart). Rightly so as they honored Walker well with their beautiful harmonies and rhythm.
    Blessings ❤

We used to got to a small country bar every weekend. The place didn't have a dance floor, as much as it was a dance everywhere. In the booths, on the tables, on the bar (this was the 70's, good looking girls could dance on the bar) and on the floor, if you happened to be standing on it. The house band played this song every night. They would wait until the crowd was worked up and calling for it. When they sang, everyone in the place would sing along with the chorus. Well, not so much sing, as yell as loud as they could. I'm sure it sounded like a bunch of drunks yelling, but we thought our singing was perfect. Anyone walking by would stop in and sing along. But the place was always to crowded so they would end up singing out on the sidewalk and/or street. Damn, good memories.

Jerry Jeff is so great, but an out of the main stream character that never got as much attention. He introduced Jimmy Buffett to Key West, which is another long story, but just a gypsy song man that just did his own thing and was pretty content with who he was and what he had. Check out "L.A. Freeway". I'm a little bias because I'm from LA, but one of his biggest songs, that I love.

I met and interviewed one of your unknowns, Donnie Fritz, when I was just starting out as a reporter. He was a songwriter, Kris Kristofferson's regular keyboard player and had minor parts in some movies. As others have said ... Jerry Jeff is most known for the song Mr. Bojangles ... it's been covered by David Bromberg, NGDB, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Frankie Lane, Harry Nilson, Sammy David, Jr., Nina Simone and others .... the 1st recorded version however was by Allen W. Damron .
That being said... Jerry Jeff toured with David Bromberg for 2 years, after which David recorded THE iconic version in which David stops in the middle to tell the origin story ... the voice, the lyrics and, even the guitar strings, saturate you taking the listener on tour thru a range of emotions ...so bitter sweet, makes you laugh, makes you cry and the last minute and a half instrumental that the song closes with continues to tell the story instrumentally tugging at one's heartstrings all the way.
DB is a wonderful artist in his own right with many other memorable songs. BTW, JJW didn't just "run into the guy", he shared a cell with him.
Every dog owner is gonna get a bit choked upon this one.... if yours is sitting under your desk or laying on the rug behind you ... don't make eye contact .....

People are recommending Mr. Bojangles. Several good covers, but the must hear is David Bromberg's. David toured and played with Jerry Jeff for a while. He tells the the story (or a story) of how he came to write the song. His performance is very poignant as well. Also, Bromberg himself is worth diving into. Comedy, blues, ballads.

Those guys got a mention because Jerry Jeff was friends with all those guys and they hung out together back in the day. Like a lot of songs from back then, they came about when the fellas were sitting around getting a load on and making stuff up as they went. Jay and Amber I am going to leave you 3 links. The 1st is to a song you will find fun and was recorded by Bobby Bare and written by Shel Silverstein who was a fantastic writer and humorist. He also wrote Marie Laveau and A Boy Named Sue. This one is called The Winner. The other 2 links kinda go together. The 1st one (link #2) is Jerry Jeff and a friend telling a story about the friend came to write the song Red Neck Mothers. The 2nd one is a performance of the song. I really think you guys will get a laugh out of all 3 links. Enjoy!!! 1) The Winner - th-cam.com/video/rvyHiFdacQE/w-d-xo.html 2) Ray Wylie Hubbard story of Red Neck Mothers - th-cam.com/video/E24C4NY0ga8/w-d-xo.html 3) Jerry Jeff sings Red Neck Mother - th-cam.com/video/L25xkZntMdM/w-d-xo.html

I believe the song contains references to cohorts that aren't so obvious. "The time i called this guy..." Guy Clark. "This nun called me up..." Gary P. Nunn.

I was just gonna say that, looked to see if anyone had beat me to it. My mom had this album when I was a kid, and my friends and I played this song a lot..... In the liner notes for the album he said the "Guy" and the "Nunn" in the verses were these two

This is Golden-glad you got to Jerry Jeff Walker, not as well know as Willie and Waylon and the boys but every bit as important to outlaw country. “Trashy Women” was one of his best songs. It charted but not in the top ten, however Confederate Railroad recorded the song and had a huge hit with it.
Stick around for more outlaw music-I don’t think you’ve done anything from Billy Joe Shaver have you? You should do “I’m Gonna Live Forever.” He even made a music video of that song in his older years. It’s good stuff. Willie Nelson did a great song with Kid Rock more than 20 years ago called “Last Stand in Open Country.” That’s a must do.
By the way, if ya get back to AC/DC, make sure ya check out “Ride On.”

'We Are The World' has a 2010 version to help Haiti, after the earthquake. Would love to see you guys react to it! They had 80+ singers this time around, which is nearly double what they had in 1985! They definitely made it their own, while respecting the original. Would love to see your reaction to it! Love you guys!

Lucky enough to see him perform in small Biloxi casino venues, one show before smart phones, one after. Gracious showman, he became the master of the selfie photo-bomber. RIP.

Billie Swan and Donnie Fritz were members of Kris Kristoffersen's band. I think you've done Billie Swan's "I Can Help". From pictues I've seen they and John Prine and Guy Clark and Ray Wylie Hubbard were all 70s songwriters and artists who hung out together when they could
