    I like the symbolism of when they're singing together and he's not looking at her & just keeps shouting over her, while she's facing him, in his face, trying to get his attention. he only looks at her when she walks away. idk, i may be reaching but to me that how i've always seen it.

    When this song first came out, I didn't realize he was the toxic one. I didn't for years. I heard her words but I didn't listen to them. That was because I was him at that time. It wasn't until I was in therapy and learning to be self-aware that I really heard what she was saying. And it still blows my mind that I wasn't able to understand her side or the side of the ex that wanted to be "friends" but then a month later blocking me 😂 this was my anthem 😂

    I always thought of it as the painting is his world. That's why his face is painted as well. She came into his world and became a part of it, but her face isn't painted to symbolize that she's herself trying to fit into his world. The paint stripping away at the end is her not being a part of his world anymore. She is letting go of all that he was to her and moving and becoming herself again. No longer a part of his world. He stands there, staring at her, watching as he is left behind, in his world, alone without her. He says he didn't need her. The way he watches her and doesn't look away, as she cleanses herself of him and everything they were says otherwise.
    I think her face being hidden when we first see her alludes to her making everything in the relationship about him and being completely "in" on the to the point of not being seen. She was invisible in his world to him, until she got tired of it. She finally had enough and spoke up for herself. She revealed her face and her side of the story. She moves through his world, not a part of his background anymore. He sees and acknowledges her, but he turns his head and doesn't listen. Only turning back to say his part of it. She withdraws and he watches her go. She turns to look at him, they stare at each other as it all falls away. She strips more and more of "him" away, yet he doesn't move an inch to try and stop her.
    Thats my two cents anyway. This video and song are real art. It's up to you to decide what it all means. Cheers. Nice reaction.

    I remember when this song was everywhere, but I never really listened. Hearing it now, i was relating to that horrible feeling of being "just somebody that you used to know" when you spent years with them. Hard to explain, but losing the romantic relationship isn't as bad as losing the friendship. It's kinda like when someone dies. You have random moments when you see something and instantly think of sharing it with this person, but then remember you can't. It sucks.

    Love this song and getting to hear both sides. Based on both their lyrics, it definitely comes across like he was a narcissist in the relationship. In his lyrics he was talking about how he felt lonely with her, and how he was glad it was over. He even says he doesn't need her love but is hurt because she cut him off. She seems to be actually trying to have a conversation about what went wrong in their relationship, yet he doesn't look at her and goes straight back to saying that she didn't have to cut him off. Unlike her, he's not heartbroken, his ego is just hurt

    • @teddyjackson1902
      @teddyjackson1902 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No it doesn’t. It’s just the course of most relationships. He’s saying that if it didn’t work, it hurts, but they were friends and the end of their romantic relationship didn’t have to be so harsh. He said he felt lonely in her presence. From what she says he tried to communicate that to her and she wouldn’t deal with it. Hardly a narc. He sounds more depressed than anything. Narcs wouldn’t care at all or they would become psychos instead of resigned. If anything she could be the narc as he was trying to connect and she refused. His attempts to communicate his loneliness were taken as accusations by her. Narcs hate criticism, that’s the ego. That said, it’s more likely and common that they just weren’t compatible.

    • @tmm4195
      @tmm4195 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@teddyjackson1902 I didn’t interpret it that way. Based on what he’s saying, he wasn’t happy in the relationship at all. He was literally glad it was over and talked about not needing her love. He was only hurt when she cut him off after they broke up. Even in the song he only looks at her, or pays her any attention when she’s leaving. You can also tell that’s what they were going for because when we hear her side of the story, we see him wincing at the truth in her lyrics. Especially when she said “but had me believing it was always something that I’ve done”. She is not connecting back with him not because she’s being harsh, but because he was a narcissist in the relationship and she needs to get away. He doesn’t see why they can’t be friends because he isn’t hurt the way she is. He was not depressed or heartbroken. Like I said before, his ego is just hurt that she is okay without him

    • @teddyjackson1902
      @teddyjackson1902 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tmm4195 clearly you didn’t. That’s why I chimed in. Yes, he was glad it was over because it was failed. You shouldn’t feel alone in an intimate relationship. The hurt he’s expressing is because when he apparently broke up with her (not something a narc does), she changed her phone number and completely excised herself from his life. He felt it was extreme. He’s not demanding anything of her, he’s not threatening her, he’s saying it hurt more than it needed to and he apparently cared for her enough to want to have a platonic relationship afterwards. That’s what he says. Anything else about narcissism or whatever is a projection.

    • @tmm4195
      @tmm4195 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@teddyjackson1902 No it’s not. Everything in the song literally leans towards him being a narcissist in the relationship. He didn’t break up with her, she broke up with him because of his behavior towards her. That’s why he said he was glad it was over. He didn’t do the breaking up. If you can’t read into that, well then I can’t help you. I mean it’s pretty obvious lol

      Told myself that you were right for me
      But felt so lonely in your company
      But that was love, and it's an ache I still remember
      You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
      Like resignation to the end, always the end
      So when we found that we could not make sense
      Well, you said that we would still be friends
      But I'll admit that I was glad it was over”
      If anything it was a mutual separation and he says as much. There was a conversation. She said they would remain friendly but was apparently not being honest. Narc trait for sure.

    Gotye, pronounced "gow · tee · ay" is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, on occasion, performs solo, or in this case a duet. His full-time gig is with the group "The Basics".
    My analysis of the meaning of the song is different than most. There are 3 individuals depicted here. He and 2 women. He sings about the first one in his opening stanza. He told himself she was right for him but still felt lonely in her company and that's an ache he still feels to this day. He got addicted to the sadness of knowing it was going to end and when it did she promised they would still be friends. She lied, she just wanted to get away from him. Why? When they broke up she did everything she could to distance herself from him. He begins whining about how unfair and hurtful that was. He tries to comfort himself by saying he doesn't need that aggravation.
    Enter girl number 2, Kimbra. She got involved with him after his breakup with girl number 1. At this point, they have already separated. Why? He kept screwing her over and making her believe it was her fault. This is probably the same reason girl number 1 dumped him. She didn't want to live with someone like that. On top of that, he said he could let his breakup with girl number 1 go and "SHE WOULDN'T CATCH HIM HUNG UP ON SOMEBODY THAT HE USED TO KNOW". She could read into his words and actions that he obviously could not. So he dumped him too.

    I feel like this was HER being trapped in this relationship with this guy who is hung up on his ex. This new girl is relegated to the background as he emerges. When she finds her strength, and she cuts him off, SHE emerges and he fades back into oblivion.
    I love this song, but I don't see both sides, I see hers. I would cut him off too. The one line says it "...that I wouldn't find you hung up on somebody that you USED to know." It was never fair of him to get with her if he was still in love with someone else.

      My ex husband was always hung up on the last person he was in a relationship with, never the one he was with. It was interesting to watch his current “hang” change throughout the years. Just like he said in the song, it was always the one he used to know.
      I do understand after taking all of his BS over several years, I just could not take it anymore. I cut him off! Again, it was just like she said in the song. He also mooned over me for years. 🙄 after you treat someone badly for sooo long, they leave.

    She's the 'new girl'. She tried, she approached him, tried to tell him how she felt. She looked straight at him, explaining her reasons, one last attempt to make it work, maybe. He turned his face away, kept talking over her, feeling sorry for himself over some other girl he used to know, over how it was now happening again.
    Remember she said she was so happy she could die (being with him)? Or when he said he was glad it was over, and that he told himself she was right for him (he didn't felt it, just tried to convince himself)? That was their lives together, she trying to make it work, and him hung up on some other girl from his past.
    She finally had enough and painted herself out of the picture that was his life, with all the shattered glass, all the odd pieces, leaving him once again playing the victim to some other girl that comes along.

    Look closer at the symbolism. The painting of them could have several meanings.
    He is a narcissist and doesn't mind being stuck in the same old patterns.... symbolized by the painting of him in patterns. She has tried to fit into this painting of what she should be like. In the end she leaves him in his patterns of the painting and his habits. And all the colors disappear from her. Her colors never were in a certain pattern. Her colors were fresh like nature. When she realizes she has to leave and break all.ties the colors fall from her and she is no longer in the picture... his picture

    There's a Hidden layer in this
    HE IS the one at fault cause the 1st verse is NOT about his current relationship to wich Kimbra respond to him, but its about HIS previous relationship, so he is (in the context of the song) in a relationship that doesn't work out, cause he is still in Love with the woman of his previous relationship wich let him go and went away.
    So Kimbra (in the context of the song) is basicly telling him "Dude i did all i could, but i'm competing with someone who's not even there and i don't know why i even try since you're a douchbag with me, evne tho i did nothing wrong" and so she leave.
    Him starting to become "part of the decor" as if he's dissapearing and her "leaving the decor" freeing herself from a toxic relationship and going away.

    He creates the repeating pattern of unfaithfulness by getting caught hung up on somebody he used to know. Causes the current relationship to fail. He visually expresses regret and would most likely cheat on his next relationship by being with her, repeating the cycle. This is a haunting song and so addictive. It hits deep - we contain both sides within ourselves. Creators of our realities. Self sabotage - Bringing relationships to an end - addicted to sadness.

    When an Australian explains that a person is "somebody that I used to know" it is a form of dismal, of put-down in that the person is not important to them, the person is inconsequential, not worth their time or energy. (But is the male meaning this or reacting from being hurt?) The writer and male singer is Australian.
