    I think that for most tourists, it simplest to just tap in and out using contactless payments (apple or google pay / debit- or creditcard), as you clearly explained in the description. Especially because this works on all modes of public transport in the entire country, without having to use an app or to register, this makes it very easy! Thanks for the helpfull video!

      Absolutely! Since this video is older than the contactless system, I had added it to the description last year. But hopefully this is still helpful for those who travel with a group or a family where one person per card isn't really convenient. But comments like yours also help spread the word, so thank you!

    You could also have mentioned why it's important to tap in and out: on the pay as you go cards they charge by distance, which is measured by when you check in and out. If you don't check out there's an extra fee. That was an expensive culture shock for me, because here in Norway we only have period tickets and checking in on buses only confirms that they're valid.

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'm sorry I missed that. Yes, if you have a plastic, recharageble card, this is true and is mostly important for the bus, trams, and trains. The metro has gates so you have to check out. If you have the paper, timed cards, this is less of an issue. However, you can go online to register the cards (plastic, rechargeable ones) and, if you forgot to check out, you can take care of it there. I've definitely done this. The max for a train is €20 and for the GVB system (in Amsterdam) is €4, I believe.

    You forgot to mention the EBS-buses... Connexxion only brings one line into Amsterdam city centre from the Zaanstreek and two at Noord , where EBS has multiple coming in at Noord and one or two at Amsterdam CS. I understand your confusion because even Dutch people don't get it, but R-NET is a regional-thingy that has to be this major connected network around 2028 if I remember it right, and tries to set a uniform look across all buses and busstops that are part of R-NET, which is the red and gray look, paired with the R-NET logo. But R-NET itself is serviced by a long list of operators and multiple modalities as well across at least 2 (but I expect 4 or 5) provinces.
    This confuses the shit out of people as the number and operator-name has gotten completely subordinate to the R-NET style. In the past you could tell people to look for a green bus or 'Connexxion bus', a beige bus and such, these days you have to pay very good attention to the number of the bus because they are alle the same colour.

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! For trains outside of Amsterdam, you'll use the NS (intercity and sprinter trains), the blue and yellow. If you have any questions, there are staff at the airport and a few help desks and offices in central. So don't worry 😊 Even a local will help you get to the right ticket machine. You can also use the NS app if you prefer.

    I'm coming from the UK in July staying for 6 nights. I will arrive on the Saturday 22nd July at Schiphol around 320pm. I'm staying in Zaandam and I will most likely just go from the Airport and stay around Zaandam on the Saturday. The rest of the days from the Sunday I will travel into Amsterdam on the train, I'm wondering if the 3 day travelcard covers the trains from Zaandam into Amsterdam Central and will I be able to get the trams from Amsterdam city centre to say the Leidseplein and what cost is the 3 day pass. I've been looking and it looks like its around €30.

    A tip on the trams: if you press the button to open the door in advance of your stop, this not only triggers the stop-light indicator, but the light on the button wil start flashing as well. This indicates that as soon as you get to your stop and the driver releases the doors to open, they will open for you (Many people, even Dutch, don't know this...)

    where do the NS trains and red buses take you? Is there a away to figure out which color bus you are taking on google maps? For example, how do I know if the bus I take from the Centraal station to the Van Gogh museum is GVB or something else?

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      NS trains are nationwide and you can use the NS app or website. I wouldn't recommend tourists use them for traveling in Amsterdam as it can get confusing. But Google maps helps. The red buses (not GVB buses) are regional. Again, I would recommend them to those traveling outside the city. Anything within Amsterdam can be reached with GVB transportation, whether that's bus, tram, or metro.
      Fun fact, if you use Google Maps, there's a place at the bottom of the map instructions that tells you the transit company.

      You can check on Google Maps if you will only use GVB transportation. Map it out and scroll to the bottom and find "Agency Info" if it says anything other than GVB, then it will not work with just a GVB card. And it will tell you what company it is so you can look up tickets for it. Remember that now you can also tap in and all on ALL public transport in the Netherlands with contactless payment, so you don't need a ticket ahead of time. So if it isn't GVB, you can simply tap in and out and use the GVB card within Amsterdam.

      Please check the official website for the i Amsterdam city card for specifics. But it does not include transportation from the airport and it does not work for the city of Rotterdam. It's only for inside Amsterdam on the GVB system.

    Hello We are travelling next month to Amsterdam. We would visiting Lisse, Rotterdam, Hague, and Giethoorn. Which kind of card would suggest for us. Both Amsterdam and Region plus OV Chip card or only OV Chip card?
    Thanks in advance

      OV Chipkaart or contactless payment for the most flexibility.

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Holland includes two provinces (and three major cities) and we don't really have anything for that. I think booking a proper tour might be better in this case.

    What ticket would you recommend for a 5 month internship in Amsterdam? The Ov card seems a little expensive for my route and I have been unable to find a monthly pass

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The personal OV kaart is €7.50, i think. And you can add subscriptions to it. That's the only way to add passes...we call it subscriptions. If you're only in Amsterdam, look into the GVB Flex.

      That's not in Amsterdam, so individual tickets, paying by contactless payment, or getting an anonymous OV chipkaart are your options. I'd check their website or reach out to them directly if you have specific questions. Have a great time!

    • @aWanderlustForLife

      To get to Zandvoort you'll need to take an NS train, so that's separate from the GVB 48 hour pass since it's not in Amsterdam. You can buy a ticket at the big yellow machines in the station :)

This video is about Amsterdam and the area around it, here's the website for the Rotterdam information: www.ret.nl/en/home/travel-products/products-and-fares.html Also, the OV Chipkaart I talk about is also fine to use at all those places.

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! There are no GVB buses from the airport which I'm thinking is why you asked about that bus. I have a video to help out with how to get from the airport: th-cam.com/video/ChFsMxtpdns/w-d-xo.html
      In Google maps, if you scroll to the bottom of the route listed, it will say either "agency info" or "tickets and information" that's where you'll see if it's GVB.
      341 is a Connexxion bus and you can tap in with a contactless card/phone/watch to ride it. Just be sure to tap the same card out :)
