    2023 UPDATE: Now you can use your contactless card or phone for all public transportation in and around Amsterdam. This includes the GVB in Amsterdam, regional Connexxion buses, and the NS trains.

    This is an airport transit guide for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. It includes 4 ways to get from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the city center, including Amsterdam Centraal Station.
    See the full blog for more info: www.awanderlustforlife.com/am...
    Take a taxi/Uber:
    There are official Schiphol taxis. Follow the signs on the floor or on the signage above to exit the building to the taxi stand. Don't let anyone offer you a taxi before this point. Go in the taxi stand for the official taxis. You may ask for a flat rate to the city center or it will be approximately €40-50.
    To order an Uber, use the app as normal. For the only pick-up spots, follow signs to the car rental desk and exit out the door next to those desks. Cross a few crosswalks to head towards the Sheraton. There is an old bus stop in front of the hotel. Here is the exact point on Google Maps: goo.gl/maps/N4hEbMbaXz4SyHGF6
    An uber will likely cost €30-40.
    Take a hotel shuttle:
    See if your hotel offers a free hotel shuttle. These will also pick up right outside the door by the car rental desk. OR book a hotel shuttle from Connexxion: www.schipholhotelshuttle.nl/ This may be around €20
    Take the bus:
    To take a public transportation bus, head out either door C or D and find the red van selling transportation tickets. A round-trip ticket is €11.25 and is good for 14 days. Or you can get an Amsterdam Travel Ticket which allows for transportation from Schiphol to Amsterdam and around the entire city no matter the company running the transportation. But if you are planning on visiting the whole region (which I highly recommend!), think about getting an Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket. The costs vary by how many days you want.
    Amsterdam Travel Ticket: www.ns.nl/producten/en/onbepe...
    Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket: www.ns.nl/producten/en/onbepe...
    Take the train:
    You can use the travel tickets mentioned above, or purchase a one-way ticket (€5.50). Another option if you like to collect the transit cards when you visit a new place (we do!), you can buy an anonymous OV-Chipkaart from the big yellow and blue machines that say "Train Tickets". Be sure to have at least €20 if you take the train or it may not let you check in.

    You missed 1 important tip for tourists. I took the train from the airport, got a ticket, went downstairs to the train & the door to the train closed just as I got there. I thought I had just missed the train & would have to wait for the next one. The person behind me just stepped around me & pressed the button on the door & it opened. I just like pretended yeah I was about to do that & jumped on the train. Seriously I had never seen a train where you had to press a button to open a door. I was laughing at myself when I got on all part of the journey.

    Thanks for the positive and informative video! I enjoy your enthusiasm. One new thing (that came out recently, years after you made the video): it is nowadays possible to use contactless payments on all Dutch public transport. Simply check-in and check-out using a smartphone or contactless bankcard. This eliminates the need for buying an anonymous ov-chipcard, as travel prices for contactless payments are the same as traveling with an anonymous ov-chipcard. I do think this is a positive addition, making it much easier for tourists and occasional travelers. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for this, very helpful. I've been watching many of your Amsterdam videos in preparation for an upcoming trip. I have a question about buying the anonymous OV Chipkaart from the yellow ticket machine. I've heard you have to "activate" the card after you buy it to select your train class in order to be able to ride. Do you know what that means and how to do that?

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very good question that I'm afraid I don't know the answer. Couple thoughts: 1) There are service people at the airport for NS. It's a huge area that would be hard to miss and I'm sure they can help you. 2) You could buy your train ticket via the app now (just called NS). 3) You can buy your ticket just for the train ride you are taking via the machines.
      We have a brand new system where you check in and out of the Amsterdam transportation (GVB company which is all the trams, metros, blue buses in Amsterdam proper) with a contactless card or your phone if you have payment on that. Or get the GVB app and get your tickets or day passes on that.
      You rarely need a real ticket or card anymore! I hope that helps.

I'll be traveling to AMS this week and already binged so many :D I'll be using schipol and staying in Amstel, but due to weather conditions we prefer to have the freedom to be able to use transport a couple times a day within the city. Do you reckon we should have the 96h OV ticket or the anonymous card and top it off? I couldn't find the price chart for the second option so I don't understand if it will compensate or not. Thanks in advance!

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, if I think I'll use it a couple times a day, I would get the unlimited card (GVB). Less stress and worry since you need to be at a station to top the anonymous one up. 9292.nl can help you understand prices and routes. BUT remember that the train to get to the center is not on the GVB system. You'll have to buy a different ticket for that. Have a great trip!

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may depend on how big, but a regular large suitcase shouldn't be a problem. If they have their dimensions and are concerned, I'd suggest contacting Connexxion (the bus company) on Twitter. But I've just asked and generally it should be fine. It's an Airport Express bus, so they are used to lots of luggage 😊

    Me and my wife are traveling to Amsterdam on Friday morning and returning Sunday night. I was going to purchase a Amsterdam and regional travel card as we are wanting to visit keukenhof aswell, do you advice to buy the travel card from get your guide before we travel, or is it best to buy when we arrive at Schiphol? We are going to buy the keukenhof entry ticket seperatly as when checking online, if you buy the keukenhof travel and entry ticket package, then you have to depart and return at the same station as specific times. We are wanting to not be tied down to specific timing of the bus to and from keukenhof.

    Thanks for posting this video, very well done and makes the train seem easy to use in the Netherlands. What happens to the balance left on the chip card when you leave the Netherlands? Do you lose it or can you actually take your balance down to zero while traveling via train, tram or bus?

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid I don't know the answer. But personally, one of the souvenirs I keep are these cards. I never run it all the way down anywhere I go 😂

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy ปีที่แล้ว

      You can run your balance down to -4 Euro at max if you want to tap out in bus tram and metro. If your card is about to expire (which will be very rare if you bought it when you arrived) and you only have say, 20 cents left on it and your trip will be more expensive that 4,20 Euro, you can just tap in and never tap out: officially, that's not allowed (which is more down to statistics than actually thinking about the customer) but hey, if your card expires the next day, big deal.
      The downside is that this prevents you from taking the train, which requires a 16 euro minimum balance to be even able to tap in.
      You can go to the ticket window at Schiphol to hand your card in, but I have no idea how this works exactly, how easy it is and, especially: about the surcharges they will apply: in the past, you had to file a two-page form and they withdrew something like 2,50 Euro 'administration costs' which was absolutely ridiculous considering the 'retail' price of the card at 7,50 Euro).
      When the card 'expires' (just an electronic setting in the chips' memory) the card will be unusable and you can refund the balance on it by sending it back to TLS, but this requires you to fill in a form where you state your bankdetails, and sending both form and card in to the company.
      If the card's expiration date is further back than expiration-date+1 year, you're out of luck and the balance is basically a present to TLS.
      When the ticket-windows will be quiet, I'll try and ask this at Schiphol ;)

      Absolutely! Unless you are staying near Elandsgracht, then the bus is probably best. Though, I'll admit, we do take an Uber home to Noord if it was a long day of traveling, or just too much luggage. I just wanted to be sure to let everyone know the best options because what's right for one person isn't right for everyone.

      OV chipkaart is for all over the Netherlands. I'm not sure what 5 day card you mean, but if you'll be running around the country, the OV chipkaart might be best. Or, a new option, is paying with contactless payment.

    Is there a specific train OR class of train that you recommend for carrying/rolling luggage (25” bag) between the airport and Centraal station? Some videos that I have seen showing the interior of the trains indicate that there is not enough room for a rolling suitcase at your feet nor is there overhead storage that would accommodate the 25 inch bag.

    • @aWanderlustForLife
      @aWanderlustForLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. We always travel by train to get to the airport. You have a couple of options, you can take the Sprinter which has 2 stops before Centraal station or the intercity direct which goes straight to Centraal. You'll see signs that there is a need for a supplement but that is only if you take it from Schiphol to Rotterdam or vice versa. We always stay by the doors in the open area and try to stay out of the way instead of going in for a seat. It's only about 15 min and in some of those areas there are seats.

      That ov chipkaart is valid on all public transport in the country. That makes it very convenient. Just make sure you have enough of a balance on it. But, since this video was posted, you can also use a contactless payment on all public transportation as well.

      Shouldn't be a problem! I'd stick with Visa or Mastercard, though. The machines are mostly for tourists (we have transit cards) so they try to make them easy to use. Now, though, a contactless card can be used to tap in/out at the card reader and you don't need a ticket. But I know sometimes it's better to know what you are paying!

      OV chip card is a declining balance. You add money and it deducts based on the cost of the trip. The travel ticket is one price with basically unlimited travel on the routes and services listed on the card. You can find more info in the links in the description. Don't be too scared...if in doubt, the airport and central have info desk people that can help ☺️ have a good trip!
