  • What ticket should I buy in Amsterdam? This is a tricky topic because there are so many different ticket options available when taking Amsterdam public transport. It is also very much dependant on your itinerary and whether you plan to travel elsewhere in the Netherlands. In this video, I’ll be talking about the iamsterdam card, the Amsterdam Travel Ticket, the GVB card, The Amsterdam and Region Travel Ticket and the Holland Travel Ticket. I’ll also be talking about the OV chipcard and OV Pay.
    One thing I wanted to add was that it is possible to buy a GVB ticket from a tram conductor. However this should be your very last resort. The trams can get very crowded, they move off quickly and occasionally there isn’t even a conductor on board. Don’t get caught out, and buy your ticket ahead of time.

    ABOUT ME
    Hello there! My name is Daniella Perera and I’m an artist and vlogger based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I grew up in Hong Kong and the UK, and I’m of mixed heritage including Chinese, Sri-Lankan, Dutch and Portuguese.
    Near the end of 2020, I moved from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam with my husband. I have since fallen in love with this city, and I make TH-cam videos (every other weekend) about things to do in Amsterdam and tips to settle in faster. The idea behind 'Pocket Lighthouse' was to shine a light on the above topics, and for this information to be accessible on the go.
    One of my long-term goals is to use my creativity (whether that be through art or video) to regularly support organisations helping strays and shelter dogs. Needless to say I absolutely adore dogs.

    Hello everyone! 😀 Have you purchased a ticket elsewhere and not mentioned in this video? Please share it below.

    We are USA residents and recently visited Amsterdam.
    We just used our smartphones ( via Apple Pay ) to tap in/out for ALL transportation. No ticket or travel card needed whatsoever. It was extremely impressive, and likely the best option for visitors from abroad like us!

      This is the comment i have been looking for. There is not a single TH-cam video that mentions Google or Apple Pay for transportation in Amsterdam. We used our phones in London to tap in and out of tubes, buses and trains. So easy. All these cards she’s mentioning here are so damn confusing. You have to know absolutely every minute of your itinerary to know which one to get so you can save half a euro.

    • @farmecologist3395
      @farmecologist3395 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ebeyslough I agree...so easy!
      The one downside is the lack of discounts when using your phone. The cards seem to offer offer a much better value in some instances. But for a visiting a short time, the savings are negligible.
      By the way, you can use Google/Apple pay everywhere in the Netherlands. We also used out phones for the train to/from Haarlem, etc...
      Good to know we can use Google/Apple Pay in London as well! Last time we visited, that wasn't available.

      @@farmecologist3395 so we just went through both London and Amsterdam, and contactless mobile payments like Google and Apple Pay work perfectly for all transports like buses, trams, subway and ferries. There is one minor difference between the two, but potentially huge.
      If you and your travel party happen to share the same credit card, it works perfectly in London. In Amsterdam, however, they treat the shared card the same so it won’t work. You can beep your first traveler with the phone, the machine that scans the person following you in this case will be treated as the same so he/she will end up tapping out. So in Amsterdam, make sure each one of your travel party have their own separate card (debit, credit, etc). That’s what we ended up doing.

      So you just get into a tram/metro/bus and scan your phone? That's it. This is so incredible. I'm so thankful you commented. I'll be visiting from India. And I'm hoping this will work for me too.

    I think that for most tourists, it simplest to just tap in and out using contactless payments (apple or google pay / debit- or creditcard), as you clearly explained at 1:20. Especially because this works on _all_ modes of public transport in the entire country, without having to use an app or to register, this makes it very easy! Thanks for the helpfull video!

Oh and it's far from easy and the Dutch won't help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stick to taxis if you can afford it.

    I'm visiting Amsterdam with family (2 adults, 2 teenagers) and think the 24 Hour Group ticket via the GVB app seems convenient and best value. Does this ticket allow use of the train from Schiphol airport to the city? (Or close enough to transfer to Metro)

    where do the NS trains and red buses take you? Is there a away to figure out which color bus you are taking on google maps? For example, how do I know if the bus I take from the Centraal station to the Van Gogh museum is GVB or something else?

    • @pocketlighthouse
      @pocketlighthouse  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you use google maps, the directions include which bus company runs it. GVB buses are white and blue, and have their branding easily visible. If you google it, you can get an idea of what the buses look like. Also I have another video regarding public transport in Amsterdam which has some bus footage too.

    Hi, when using OV Pay - am I charged Euro 3.40 minimum for each ride (including transfers within one hour)? Or is the cost calculated based on distance travelled? Please elaborate on that. Thanks!

      Hi, the GVB ticket is just for central amsterdam. It doesn't cover the trains. If you're taking the train from the airport to your hotel and visiting Zaandam, then you'll need to get train tickets. Alternatively, you might also consider some of the other ticket types mentioned in this video (which include all forms of transport).

      Travelling to Sloterdijk from the airport you will be in luck, because bus 369 is a GVB bus and will work with the GVB ticket. Going to Zaandam requires a train, which needs a different ticket.
      From Sloterdijk to centraal station is doable with the GVB metro or bus 22 but it will be a longer journey compared to the train, but will usable with your 48h ticket!
