How do you not immediately get pulled into combat with him? I can never approach him without him and his ambushing party being all hostile already, and I've done this part on two different characters now. And if the displacer beast sees me, it immediately attacks too... I was able to taste the spider meat and figure out it was enchanted, but never able to do anything with that information.
Bugs I suppose. Maybe it was patched when I did it if it was after you or some other error based on what we did, an approach from a different angle, some party spell or item that effected one of the ambush party
If you go upstairs where the demons are, they instantly attack. If you go through the "ambush" zone where the displacer is so the demons have the high ground, the lead demon starts dialogue
This same thing happened to me on my playthru. I approached and the displaced beast just ran away into the ambush and I had to fight everyone. I literally had no idea you could talk to Yurgir or Nessa until seeing other people do it like in this video 🙄
If at the demon entrance you go left, you will see some broken ground. Jump [and don't fall to your death] from one broken ground level to the next and you will be able to find the carcass. But I haven't found a way to interact with Nessa. She doesn't show up to her nest, she just stays with the demons.
I haven't long rested in act 2 yet so I still have act 1's Morninglord's Radiance giving all attacks +1-4, Astarion has 20 dexterity, gloves of the balanced hand to give him two weapon fighting so an extra 10 damage from those two offhands, has the weapons Sword of Life Stealing and Knife of the Undermountain King in his off hand that gives a higher crit chance, and he had advantage on every attack so it should have done three sneak attacks.
@@KennanW Sneak attack is precisely once per round, and you don't have it set as an "ask each time" reaction, but an automatic usage, which means your first attack eligible for sneak attack will use it. You can prove it in the damage log, but also in the way the damage numbers pop up. Your first attack had 3 damage numbers, 10 and 15 in white, and 4 damage in yellow. Based on what the max dice roll for your main hand should be(13), the 10 was from your normal attack, the 15 from sneak, and the 4, being yellow, was from Radiance. Your second attack was a crit, but it only had two numbers, a white 16 and a yellow 8: no sneak attack. Your final attack had a white 11 and a yellow 4: no sneak attack. Total of 68, and the math works, 105 hp Yurgir is down to 37. But to the person you're replying to: this is precisely how hard any thief should be hitting at level 9 (a guess from all the spellcasters having a single level 5 spell slot) with ok gear and stats. The crit was nice, but this is by no means abnormal. Even if you hadn't crit, the damage would be lowered by 1d6+1d4. But with sneak, Radiance, and three attacks, one a crit, you're just rolling a LOT of dice: (1d6+7+5d6+1d4)+(2d6+7+2d4)+(1d6+7+1d4) = 9d6+4d4+21 You rolled 13 dice with a flat bonus of 21 from 20 dex and +2 weapons. That damage range is 34-91. With a 68, you barely hit higher than the exact average damage, 62.5. The only thing unaverage was your luck with the Morninglord: all 4 radiant d4s rolled a 4. Praise Lathander, hehe!
@@Pgoodso Bit ironic that the Lord of Dawn is helping out a night-crawling fanger like Astarion :D - agree with your numbers analysis. Personally my Astarion almost always ends up a Ninja (Thief 4/Monk 8) to add extra flurry of blows and stuns with sneaky goodness - but when he dual-wields (until Act 3) it is with exactly those two weapons...
There's a perception check you have to pass too. I've seen a streamer in honor mode create a bard hireling sent in solo because they don't have to pass the perception then just gotta get the rolls.
So if I had licked the Spider Carcass, Nessa would have talked to me? I never got the chance to talk to her. Depending on from which direction I come, it either starts the cutscene/dialog with Yurgir or the whole group attacks (can beat them, that is not the problem). Went with the dialog and literally talked Yurgir to death, but felt terrible about it. I would go back and try to save her, if this didn't mean that I would have to do the Faith Leap Trial again...
He should always talk to you. Unless, from what I can tell, you steal something (red chest near the spider body) and then they start combat at some point. Maybe there was a bug for you. It is an embarrassingly badly designed encounter where the majority of his allies don't even know what to do if they ambush you, so I could see them making other errors with it.
I solved this by sneaking my entire party up by the side, then ambushing the big guy with Lae'zel who killed him in one round, used all of Astarions sneak attacks repeatedly then cast spirit guardians on both my bard Tav and Shadowheart and the fight wasn't too hard. I'm level 8 at this point and that worked well. The important thing is to not let the big guy throw out the bombs because that fucked me up at my first attempt at this fight.
Man, so many options in the game truly. I feel bad for having used an Assassin Astarion to just one-round her before one-rounding Yulgir too. Raphael doesn't even seem remotely interested in talking to Astarion in Wyrm's Crossing afterward either.

Just make sure to do an action that has the "temporary hostile", kill the other goblins and then knock her out, followed by a long rest. You can also betray Minthara at the grove raid and then repeat the same things I mentioned if she was in the goblin camp.
Go back after every long rest, pick up any of the weapons on one of the altars and drop it back on to get the buff again. Or did they patch it so you get the buff just walking back in the room? Not sure, the first time I said yes the rat just kept running around the area but then disappeared when I moved to a further away character to jump them down. So it looks like if you agree they should just vanish, at least if you move far enough away from the rat that gives you the choice. I said yes to add to Halsin's approval (the hidden loot is garbage like all the hidden chests you find with survival rolls) and I entered the turn based mode to target and kill the rat so I could get both options. I later found the group of rats that runs from you that leads you to the climbable surface down to that area I jumped into and four rats that attacked me near the trial doors, but I assume that is just a bug (since the rats should have all been dead for me) and was only happening because I entered the area in a different way.
I think they are running around in the temple so if you can find them, follow them wherever they go. They are usually headed toward the circle I think.

@@rebbekahcannons9805 Yep.. i killed him on my first full playthrough because of Astarion.. Turns out Astarion can do just fine without this info :D
Dang, my bard look nearly exactly the same as your character
I didn't follow the displacer beast first when I saw it but went another direction. Then there was no way to engage talking with it or Orthon but the fight started right away.
Yeah I am wondering if you have to find the spider corpse first and that triggers her dialogue
after 3 playthroughs, i also did not know about this until watching this video.
I had volo take my eye out for the permanent see invisible enemies buff and immediately got into a fight bc i spotted every single person in there didnt even get the chance to talk to them
huh, had no idea you could free nessa, i just went over to where she was and murked her, then they "ambushed" me, but all his minions are ranged so they all grouped up on the edge so i just aoe'd them to death whuole they were shooting arrows, then used karlach to tank fatso while gale ranged him. he took so long to get to us that his entire cohort was dead before he could even attack
4:41 dude in the background is how I imagine I look walking in to work first day after vacation
_stomp stomp_
Weird, when I got to that part of the Gauntlet, everybody was immediately hostile, I couldn't talk to anybody
I had no idea there was a connection with the spider meat I thought it was just there to be funny
I have the same issue. Inspected and licked the spider but Nessa does not come to her nest, she stays where Yurgir is and it is super annoying T-T
Poor Halsin. You made him wear metal armour. Don't you know how druids feel about that?
I did in second edition
Just now realizing how much I've missed by not being a dumbass
You gave them your word.
How was you're astarion hitting so hard? I know you're running Thief but you did like 60 damage in one turn.
@@KennanWcan only sneak attack once per turn :)
But with sneak, Radiance, and three attacks, one a crit, you're just rolling a LOT of dice:
(1d6+7+5d6+1d4)+(2d6+7+2d4)+(1d6+7+1d4) = 9d6+4d4+21
You rolled 13 dice with a flat bonus of 21 from 20 dex and +2 weapons.
Personally my Astarion almost always ends up a Ninja (Thief 4/Monk 8) to add extra flurry of blows and stuns with sneaky goodness - but when he dual-wields (until Act 3) it is with exactly those two weapons...
hot damn that yurgir kill is insane. what build did you use for astarion??
probably explorer difficulty
There's a perception check you have to pass too. I've seen a streamer in honor mode create a bard hireling sent in solo because they don't have to pass the perception then just gotta get the rolls.
180 hours and ive never had speak with animals... damn, how is there still stuff i havent discovered yet
man I should’ve listened to my gut and pursued the rats
Are you KIDDING me? I spent so much time on those damn rats and had such a problem and I could just spirit guardians them????
bro i didnt even knew he had dialogue i saw the panther and decided to explore around before pursuing it and i got ambushed 😭😭😭
You can free her?!
your channel name is too funny along with the icon. dropped a like.
just discover you can free Nessa after 5 playthroughs xD
STOP LICKING THE SPIDER
4:40 That Merregon walk though...
I wonder if you can tell Yurgir about how Raphael made a deal with a Dark Justiciar later on.
@@annenym2222 You can just ask them not to attack you while you look into his problem
"STOP LICKING THE DAMN THING"
how do you even manage to talk to the orthon, hes always hiding to ambush me
He will talk to you if you walk into the ambush.
@@engrammi Yes. With some good skill checks he'll stand down from attacking.
@@KennanWI've had two play throughs of this encounter and both instantly ambushed just walking by.
In the gauntlet?? I didn’t see this.
ive seen it, you have to jump off a ledge
@@lostprophecy7593 You don't have to jump off the ledge like I did , you could also just find the wall section that you can climb down and killing some rats will eventually lead to a group of them running to that climbable wall section.
thumbs up if you licked it aswel! XD
also, i had no idea this is a thing very nice, thank you! :O
Bruh what I thought that the orthon was Raphael’s enemy thought I finished the quest. I wanted to get out of their so bad after finishing the trials because I had to restart hella far on leap of faith
Oh. She's an NPC? I ambushed her every time.
Well... There's another easter egg I wish I never saw.
Easter egg? This isn't a hidden feature or scene.
@@KennanW - It's a feature that few if any would bother investigating, and the dead spider is usually found only _after_ you deal with the orthon. If I had to guess, there's probably even a hidden achievement associated with it.
The PC interface look really better than the PS5 one. I wonder if I missed the way to end a spell, but I remenber searching for it and not finding it.
It exist, it just very not obvious, I just found it.
Use speak with the dead on the orthons bed!
my game was glitched because i didn't even see the spider dead body when i went thru this section. I'm so mad D:
i tried this and failed, i didn't know it was really possible to free her
*currently hating myself becuase i missed the displacer dialog and got yurgir to kill everyone... including nessa*
How the hell did you get Halsin to join your party? Man refuses to join mine any chance he gets..
I don't know what you would have done. Just normal playing you destroy the druids and you get Minthara you save them you get Halsin.
@@KennanW I haven’t even met Minthara and he’s not in my party, he’s in my camp but not party. He just doesn’t like me ig
@@_Acee.33 he cant actually join your party until after a certain plot point in act 2. you arent doing anything wrong. you just need to play through more of the story first.
@@KennanW Fun fact. You can knock out Minthara with a non-lethal in the goblin hide out and then she'll reappear in act 2. Just make sure to do an action that has the "temporary hostile", kill the other goblins and then knock her out, followed by a long rest. You can also betray Minthara at the grove raid and then repeat the same things I mentioned if she was in the goblin camp.
@@michaelpitter9193 Of course they patched that in after this video, and that's why I prefer to play larger CRPGs about 2-3 years after they release.
8:33 The rat sinks into the ground. It almost seems... bugged. 😜
Would it be possible to knock him unconscious and carry his body to the devil tasked with killing him?...
Wait. You can use that helmet and use speak tp the dead to npc you killed? Does disguise self work too?
Speak to the dead is typically supposed to be done while disguised because they won't talk to their killer
The helmet just allows you to cast disguise self, so yes it's the same spell.
I had no idea the spider was at the Gauntlet?? I've done this like three times and have yet to see it???
How did u maintain this lathanders buff +4light dmg to attacks? I got in in the temple and then lost it idk why
You lose it after a long rest, which I haven't taken. You can also go back to the temple and get it reapplied.
Go back after every long rest, pick up any of the weapons on one of the altars and drop it back on to get the buff again. Or did they patch it so you get the buff just walking back in the room? I don't remember, but that thought just came to me. I know they patched it so companions no longer get it re-applied if you dismiss them from the active party and then add them back, which used to happen even into Act 3 when you can't go back to the temple anymore to get it for your PC.
who here had to look up what coquettishly meant?
Did you get anything for freeing Nessa?
If you pass the very high roll for her not to attack you she joins you in what is a very easy battle even if you are fighting against her as well. The satisfaction of freeing an enslaved predator that will kill things and people in the future?
@@KennanW Fair enough, thanks for the reply
How do you talk to it?
It just attacks as soon as it spots me in his room
how are you doing that kind of damage?! that fight cleaned me the hell out!
Spirit Guardian spell, if you have shadowheart or another cleric you should have it by the time you reach that area
Against Yurgir? I haven't long rested in act 2 yet so I still have act 1's Morninglord's Radiance giving all attacks +1-4, Astarion has 20 dexterity, gloves of the balanced hand to give him two weapon fighting, and has the weapons Sword of Life Stealing and Knife of the Undermountain King in his off hand that gives a higher crit chance.
and you're not using the sneak attack, right?@@KennanW
@@LordCancerTaymanisus I should be? He had advantage on every attack and sneak attack is on automatically in his reaction tab so they all should have been sneak attacks. If they weren't I would hate to think I have been doing something wrong the whole time and the game is even easier than I thought it was.
@@KennanW i should check on that i usually command the sneack attack so i never noticed if is automaic but it should be not because sneak attack do a different animation. Usually the rogue when doing sneak attack does a little jump and a strong stab with main hand, looks rather cool
Does anyone know how ShadowHeart was revived at 16:20?
Is your PC supposed to be Dave Grohl? 😅
Have they fix that part because I’m trying to do it and it’s not working so am I missing something or what?
WHAT!? they ambushed me and I just though I had to kill then and I already deleted that save file! NOOOOO
I attack rats , they said don't kill them just take treasure now I can't find any rat to trigger this anymore not even near Raphael ritual circle. Can I still kill them again?
