    Shaun, besides being another ridiculously crafted piece this is your best video to date. The way you're constantly improving with the flow and timing of your shots is really showing. You're moving in and out with the music and getting better with the angles, so encouraging to see you constantly grow! Also, my grandfather and I used to go to the park on Sundays and play chess together then he'd take me back to his shop in the shed in his backyard and teach me how to use tools, this really hit a strong memory for me. Cheers, I can't wait to see this channel explode!

    Can you please tell me, have you checked how maple wood works with walnut in terms of thermal expansion coefficients? What is the risk that these types of wood are not friendly with each other, resulting in cracking, swelling, or splitting? Also, what if I wanted to make the board wood-block end grain to top to make the wood structure more fancy - would gluing them be any different? Thank you.

      The one thing I still have not figured out is how to handle wide stock after a glue up without having a thickness planer. A hand planer would suffice?! I'm honestly not sure.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, unfortunately without a thickness planer you are limited to either hand planes, or maybe a belt sander with some coarse sandpaper on it and leveling everything that way. A bit more work, but it can still be done!

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boards made in this way do have a tendency to bow. This one bowed a bit, but not enough to effect the playability. I made a new version with a veneered board to help with that problem that you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/3dqUbjRbNLw/w-d-xo.html

  • @Dennis-kj9qx
    @Dennis-kj9qx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm just asking to learn only ! Can this warp or cup in time ? I noticed the end grain glue up. Will they stay together ? I have seen people glue them down to a plywood base . I love this and want to lay this into a chess table built from the home family house timber . It will be a special gift. It must last for many years as a family passing gift for generations to come. board is awesome ! Really hope Anyone can answers these questions. Thanx D

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is always the potential for something like this to warp over time, but the chances of it actually coming apart are extremely low/zero. I am actually going to be making some new ones soon, and plan to make them using an MDF or plywood substrate to keep them flat over time.

    • @Dennis-kj9qx
      @Dennis-kj9qx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shaunboydmadethis I agree about a base to glue it down to. As a gift it warrants the extra time to do so.. Really glad you replied. Confirmed together. Thx . D.

    Great construction, thanks for another example of craftsmanship!
    Could I bother you and ask your opinion on one issue though, the flipping of alternate rows? I have two pieces of wood with very striking figure, European ash and American walnut, and I was thinking to make it so the original figure of both planks is completely on the same side of the final board. This means making the strips 9 wide and shifting them one field, instead of 8 wide and flipping them. I have figured out a way to do this for my board, with only a little bit of cheating (the original planks are only just big enough). It's a bit more complex, and you have to be lucky to have enough wood, but in return you get a board where all the wood is from the same side of the same plank as near as possible to its original figure. If you were given a sufficiently beautiful piece of wood, would you consider such a thing?

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yeah, that is probably a smart way to get the desired look you are going for. Like you said, if you have enough material where you can afford to lose a bit once you trim it, then go for it. Sounds like it is going to look awesome!

    • @SteveEngland
      @SteveEngland 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rather than flipping, couldn't you just rotate 180 degrees?

    The square on the far right of the near edge should be white, not black. To fix this, you can make a whole new board with inverted black and white. Or you can just rotate this one 90°.

    The question that came over me at the end was, just how easy is it to lift that board out to access the box? It doesn't look easy. I imagine the finish will get marred with repeated use - you know, where the fingernails dig in trying to lift the top. Well, take my criticism for what it's worth from a guy who is just beginning, at 69, his interest in woodworking. Anyway, thanks for entertaining and educating me.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it isn't too difficult, but I had the same thoughts when I was making it. I have made a few more since then and have made the board thicker to make it easier to lift out. Also wouldn't be too hard to add some sort of finger hold or something to make it really easy. Thanks for watching and good luck with your woodworking!

    Great build you made it look easy. Pity about the jokes, you need to work on that. Did you think of using the thin strips to create individual compartments for your pieces.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Colin! Yeah, I definitely think I will make some sort compartment system for the pieces at some point.

    I think I played chess once, My son managed to beat my Dad who ( old man story ) beat the best in the province at one point.
    I'm waiting until it's warmer out and then building a chess board, I already made the pieces!

    Ok - two things - finally got your great joke about the bored/board haha.
    Secondly - you didn’t stand on the finished chess board - wtf? Thats your thing - a reason why so many follow you - you stand on things.
    Please redo the video - please and thank you
    thirderly - love your clamping style
