    Fun build. A few notes: when you cut the top of the queen you rotate 90 degrees. When you cut the top of the king you rotate 180 degrees. Should have been obvious but it took me wrecking a few blanks to figure this out.

    Sooo good, they turned out far better that I could have imagined. If you find you're having issue with the pieces tipping over you can drill out the bottom and glue in some lead weights.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Glen! That is a good tip. I made them big enough so that they have a bit of weight to them, but that is something to keep in mind if I ever do a smaller set.

    This is exactly what I needed. With my limited equipment, I was voluntold to make chess pieces for my nephew for Christmas. My thought was to use those prototypes as templates, in case any other relatives get jealous. That way, I can produce the same set over and over without reinventing them.

    I'm going to do this with 4x4 lumber to get the bulky look I was after.
    Excellent work!

  • @cvogan01
    @cvogan01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, Shaun - my own set came out just like yours - with two changes: 1) I cut a V in the top of the knight heads, makes them look more "equine"; 2) made an extra king for both walnut and maple, then painted the walnut with gold bands upper and lower, and on top of his crown, and silver on the maple. That way the winner of the game will take home the gold king, and the loser takes the silver king. I have a grandson who always wins!

I even made a sled just for making these, with all the marks etc....so I can reproduce them. I stopped your video in many spots and I think I duplicated them pretty good. I know this is an old video--but it was exactly what I was hoping to find! You say in passing you cut the blanks to their final size, and it looks like you moved the fence to 3/4". Is that correct? All the pieces have the same footprint, 3/4"? Thanks again for the vid. Cool stuff.

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I don't remember exactly how big they were, but I do remember the pawns were slightly smaller. So maybe 3/4" for the big pieces, and 1/2" for the pawns?

    Extra internet points for the doggo. Also, you should really post some type of dimensions or plans on your site for the chessboard and pieces. I’m pretty sure I could get most of this with minimal directions, but some dimensions for the sake of keep things proportional would really help. Even some pictures with just a ruler (ha! vague pun...) for scale would be grrr-eat! Another awesome video btw.

    I am so stoked about this video! My son loves playing chess and we just recently bought our first table saw (still not assembled). There is no doubt in my mind, we will be making some chess boards and pieces too after we have some better skills. Great video. Out of curiosity...I don't have a band saw. Other than changing the design, how could I accomplish that cut on a table saw? Create a jig specifically for that angle I am assuming? Thank you for the inspiration. I am really exciting about doing this with my son. Have a great week!

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, a jig to cut that angle will work just as well. I just didn't want to cut such a small piece at that steep angle on the table saw, but if you were to cut it off the end of a longer piece, it should be totally fine.

    Can they fit in the storage compartment as you intended? Painstaking and simply regal.

      Yeah, I actually built a second one a couple months later with dividers for all the pieces.

    Super nice - You motivate me to make my first set of pieces! wondering about the table saw blade kerf - it looks quite narrow?

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I think I was using a thin kerf blade for this, so 3/32" thick.

      @@shaunboydmadethis Hi Shaun; I finished my chess pieces today (all but the final finish) modelled on yours with some twists of my own. Thanks again.

    Great project
    1 suggestion if I may
    Buy you a flat bottom grind table saw blade

    • @shaunboydmadethis
      @shaunboydmadethis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! And good suggestion, I have one, just was too lazy to switch it out. If I make more pieces for someone that has a keen eye like you, I will be sure to use it!

    Any possibility we can get some dimensions? Size of the squares on your board? Size of the back pieces' base, and the size of the pawn base? And height of each different piece.
    They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I want to flatter you by copying your work as closely as I can... please share your dimensions?
