Got mine in March 2022. Problems so far: cooling liquid leak from hose clamps, loosing programming of quick access functions, uneven worn front brake rotors. Nothing that left me stranded. 21.000km so far.
I owned a 2020 KTM 790 Adventure (s) which is mostly the same bike. I put 17k miles on it over 20 months. It was a great bike that did some long trips like the CDR. I sold it to get 2022 R1250GSA. It is not at Honda or Yamaha level (yet) but is becoming respectable especially if you like the hooligan quality that it brings.
890-R owner here. The biggest concern I have with this bike is the clutch. I've been warned by a local ripper I sometimes try to keep up with that has been on a 790-R since it came out that you need to change how you ride with the traction control on these things. Namely you need to trust the TC and resist that urge to work the clutch to manually control traction. This is hard as hell for me to do, especially at slower speeds. I've had mine buried up to the axles in a mud hole and unable to get it going because the TC feels like it is conspiring against me. (Also because the factory TKC80's are no bueno in mud!) Once I managed to heat the clutch up quite a bit. My woods bike is a 200 XC 2-stroke. From riding that I have my hands programmed to slip the clutch whenever I get into something slick or dicey. De-programming that and trusting the computer on the 890 has proven to be my biggest concern. Especially now that I've heard horror stories of guys having clutch failures far from civilization. Other than that I would ride this thing anywhere. And it is fun as hell! Best bike I've ever owned.
Excellent thoughts on your experience with the bike Ben. Those road miles are an important consideration in an ADV bike. We get wrapped up in the off-road, which this bike seems very capable to handle, but most people in the daily rider ADV segment spend 70% or more of their time on pavement.
Nice update! This bike is still on my radar. I'm at decision paralysis between this, the Desert X, the Tuareg, or the newer Africa Twins. Coming from a 2018 Africa Twin, I'm interested in some of the newer technologies in all these new bikes. Simultaneously a great time to be looking for a new adventure bike, and also a stressful time because of all the options. Each have so many pros/cons, it's easy to get stuck in decision analysis mode.
It seems your answer will be made easier when you review the most important questions. What % of riding is off-road? Do I ride mostly solo or in groups (reliability vs having buddies to help)? Dealer network in proximity to my house? Good luck! 👍🏻 and I do LOVE my 2021 Honda ATAS ES DCT after 7500 miles. I ride solo mostly and will take plenty of Forest roads/gravel roads with it, and enjoy it in the twisties. Check out my 7000 Mike review 😊
@@forestmotoadventures Yeah, similar to you. Mostly solo riding, I don't take the bigger bikes truly off-road (crf 250 for that) but I live in an area full of mountain roads, paved and dirt, ideal for exploring. I'd like to be able to do longer, multi-day rides eventually but so far that hasn't happened. Realistically I'm probably 80-20 on/off road. The Ducati dealer is actually closer to me than my Honda dealer, but both are about an hour away. Here in Interior Alaska (Fairbanks) my only experience with the 901 was seeing one non operational at the KTM dealership this last fall with a computer issue that this dealership could not resolve as the KTM diagnostic equipment would not pair with it. I am not sure if it ever got fixed here, or if the owner needed to have it shipped to Anchorage where there is the only Husqvarna Moto dealership in the State (only Husqvarna repair places here are geared towards power tools, not moto). That said for me at least it was a sign for my next bike to be a brand that has more repair shops, easy to self repair and high reliability so I put money down on a 2023 DRZ 400 last week that I will ride next summer to train myself up on dirt before upgrading to a T7 the following year. hahaha ride like and A$$hole! Love it. Its a shame you are thinking of selling your Norden. I have 6000km on mine since May 2022, the more I ride it the more I am absolutely loving it. Gaining more confidence in my riding too, even with the rider aids, I am pushing myself to be an even better rider, i dont think it makes me want to go harder, but the bike gives me more confidence to tackle harder terrain. No major issues, we certainly haven't had the same issues here in Australia. Anyway, thanks for the content you provide on you channel.
Ben, you have now explained why my buddies that ride KTM's are such assholes!! I'm looking forward to my Norden arriving in the spring. Great video and I really enjoy your views on bikes and equipment. Keep up the good work.
Japanese bikes arent 100% trouble free, A buddy of mine has a Super Tenere, On his second head removal, 1st at 50k the chain jumped and bent the valves, second supposed compression issues
No worries nobody really wants an off-road but can't really take it off road super heavy motorcycle made in Europe that doesn't last very long sorry Japan's number one anyway
What’s with your fascination of buying 550+ pound bikes and thinking they are good off road? Of course your riding style isn’t really off-road…a mountain fire road is not off road.

My first and very likely my only adventure bike and the only two issues I have had is the coolant leak from a loose hose and the hard cold start where one cylinder refuses to fire till the engine has idled (roughly) for a few minutes. Other than that a great powerful and fun bike and I’m 60 and have not ridden for 32 years…..oh and your white hideous crash bars are “dorky” 🤭
Dammit, I was pretty set on gettinga a T7, but now I'm thinking I should just go for the 901 for all the techno-goodies. Spendy, but YOLO as the kidz say.
70hp vs 105 & the lower center of gravity are HUGE game changers alone
Any issue with engine heat? I read some comments about that, lot of heat coming out around the feet /lower legs.. just curious
I've heard that too. You can feel it but it's not like a huge deal in my experience.
super easy fix
I got a norden about a month ago and I fully agree with your answer, I can feel it of course, but an issue. Of course I'm in Paris and temperatures now are such a bit of heat is actually welcome 😁. We'll see in the summer if further actions are required..
Thanks for review of the bike, I enjoyed it a lot and if helped me in my decision to buy my Norden, which I do not regret sor far! Great bike! Keep on riding and recording 😊👍
@@justsomedude445Which is?
Thanks for the vid! How would it do in your opinion for a little sports touring too?
In retrospective: you should have been waiting for Norden Expedition 😀
re: riding like a jerk, yeah it can be tempting to enter warp speed and do silly things.. sometimes I self reflect a bit and dial things back. I'm aggressive in my riding because I'm being proactive, being overly reactive and defensive on bike is a lot different than in a car.
You have to get some more miles on that bike, thanks for the info
It’s more fun than a tenere? That’s crazy makes me want one
Great comments! What tires did you put on the Norden for off off road?
Motoz Rallzz rear and dual venture front are great IMHO
hahaha ride like and A$$hole!
#5 for the win.
Was that bicyclist taking a pit stop when you came around the corner?
Good stuff.
always entertaining
Too late 6000km in. :P absolutely living it.
12000 miles on mine and ill keep this bike for the foreseeable future , its pure magic with the mods ive done
@@justsomedude445 jep still the same here. I got to the first big service now. Still in love. :) this bike handles more than i can Imagine.
Nice bike
Ben, you have now explained why my buddies that ride KTM's are such assholes!! I'm looking forward to my Norden arriving in the spring. Great video and I really enjoy your views on bikes and equipment. Keep up the good work.
Japanese bikes arent 100% trouble free, A buddy of mine has a Super Tenere, On his second head removal, 1st at 50k the chain jumped and bent the valves, second supposed compression issues
10k miles a year is a lot..... I think I'm an average rider and I do roughly 15-17k miles on mine, yearly😂
You're not an average rider. The majority of motorcycles get ridden less than 2k miles a year.
Most reliability issues are on the web…in real life it’s bugger all.
👏🍻
No worries nobody really wants an off-road but can't really take it off road super heavy motorcycle made in Europe that doesn't last very long sorry Japan's number one anyway
Sounds like the bike for me. I’m a total ass h-le😂
Can I has one? 🥺😀👍✌
I’m so disappointed to hear the lc8 is going to be made in china now 😢
What’s with your fascination of buying 550+ pound bikes and thinking they are good off road? Of course your riding style isn’t really off-road…a mountain fire road is not off road.
