@@54m0h7 Dark Ritual isn't legal in Modern, R&D realized pretty early on that being able to make three mana on turn one with one card is very abusable and it subsequently hasn't seen a standard-legal printing since Mercadian Masques. A couple of my personal picks:
Mark of Fury- Haste: Red Enchantment aura that gives haste, but also returns itself to your hand at EOT. Good for Heroic shenanigans, like if you're building a Feather Deck or something
Burnt Offering- Sac/Ritual: Instant that sacrifices a creature to add it's mana value of any combination of black and/or red mana. Particularly useful to sac your most expensive creature in response to a boardwipe, then proceed to either flash in or Sneak Attack a hand full of creatures

  • @tomasomurchu6052

A real big miss on this list is Silence. It's so good as a piece of interaction to just shut out an opponent on the turn that they would combo, play a key card they tutored for, or look to unload a bunch of mana they made through rituals. And not only that, but it's just as good as protection on the turn when you're going to go off. Especially given that it's white, it allows non-blue decks to interact with the stack in a way that's generally very rare.
My favorite usage was the time I cast Silence in response to a guy in my playgroup tapping out to cast Mana Geyser after a Bonus Round. He spent two cards and made 32 mana and as soon as my one mana Silence went on the stack the will to live was visibly sapped out of him.

    • @AnnoyingNewslettersPage6

Similar situation happened in original Mirrodin Standard, where I used Annul to stop my opponent's March of the Machines.
Give me that! ...oh, it does say, Counter target artifact or *enchantment* spell.
He would have utterly destroyed me, turning my artifact lands into 0/0s. It bought me a turn.
I top decked Moriok Rigger, so when he cast a second March of the Machines the next turn, I ended up with a 9/9 Rigger vs his 5/5 Furnace Dragon.
      Such a close match.
Avoid Fate can also be a useful surprise in Green, but it only protects one of your permanents from instants and auras.

    My personal favorites..
    White:
Mana Tithe - A Force Spike in white that no one sees coming, even if they know it is in your deck.
Silence & Orim's Chant - Cheap ways of practically Time Walking an opponent.
Angel's Grace - Not letting the opponent combo win is great (especially vs. the very cheesy Oracle).
The split second is very clutch here, because they usually try to have counterspell(s) backup to protect said combo.
    Blue:
Force Spike - Sure it is more telegraphed than Mana Tithe, but still just as brutal. Punish those players that like efficiency.
Ruin Crab - Perfect 0/3 body. Not many cards played 1st turn make you the Arch-Nemesis, this is surely one of them.
Siren Stormtamer - Much like Clint Eastwood in The Line of Fire; can take a hit for the President.
    Black:
Cabal Therapy & Thoughtseize & Duress/Ostracize - Information is the best aspect of these cards.
Especially if you know something is already in their hand or if paranoia tells you they are about to go off with combo.
Putrid Imp - "Pimp daddy" is one of the best self-selective discard effects ever printed.
    Will-O-the-Wisp - Need a reliable blocker?
    Red:
Need for Speed - A quirky way of getting haste..
Especially if the land you sacrifice doesn't mind, like Flagstones of Trokair/Riftstone Portal or if a Wrenn & Six is also in your strategy.
Vexing Devil - One of the best political cards. You can say things like: "Whoever pays the 4 life will be my target for the rest of the game"
Reckless Waif - Waifu? Check. Early beatstick? Check. Human, Rogue/(Party), Werewolf synergy? Check.
    Green:
Elves of Deep Shadow & BoP/Gilded Goose & Noble/Ignoble Hierarch - Mana dorks that provide other colors are amazing.
Aboreal Grazer - Perfect 0/3 body with Reach! Rampy. Stays under the radar, then gets Craterhoof'd.
Pelt Collector - Good scaling, can become a threat very quickly with cards like Groundbreaker or Evoke creatures.

    Village rites: instant (B)
Additional cost is sacrifice a creature: draw 2 cards
    Serra ascendant: creature 1/1 (W)
    Lifelink
If you have 30 + life gains +5/+5 and flying
    Bag of holding: artifact (1)

I find very interesting how the format has shifted from "heymakers" to efficient cards over the last two years. IMO, mostly because of the increase of cEDH content on the internet. Not necessarily people want to play cEDH but they understand that efficient cards will benefit casual decks as well.
final observation: Really really like Dragon's Rage Channeler and I think it deserver a spot here

  • @DetroitTyler
    @DetroitTyler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I really like Mirri's Guile, doesn't add any ramp or card advantage, but dropping that turn one really sets your deck up to be extremely playable throughout the game, and because it doesn't have the card draw that a sylvan library has means it has a pillowfort aspect where most people will just let it sit on the board. Filtering the top 3 each turn for game duration is extremely nice and you are set up for a nice tempo engine.
