    My favorite obscure cards that are secretly powerful are deglamor and unravel the aether. They are basically natrualizes that shuffles the target into the deck. It's a natualize that kills blightsteel, any Theros god, and darksteel plate. Also the hidden use of it is if someone plays a vampiric tutor or worldly tutor or any tutor that pits the card on top of the deck, you can force them to shuffle at instant speed.

      I've ran this since it was printed in my most tuned deck (Licia Mardu Lifegain/Akido), where it's exactly the right sort of death sentence an aggro deck like that needs. It gets overlooked because it's an uncommon from a busy set that is also a sorcery and 4MV.
      Recently, I've swapped it out for an older card that's also rolling at 0%, Barrage of Boulders, which is 2R for the damage and ties the "can't block" to a Ferocious trigger, which should always proc when you actually want to use it.

    I think its important to note, "Insight" has the printed text of "successfully casts" and the Oracle text omits "successfully", however, rulings have been made to errata "successfully casts" as "casts", meaning you can still counter the green spell and still gain a draw.

    Aetherize "3U: Return all attacking creatures to their owner's hand". It gets around, hexproof, shroud, indestructible and protection. It's instant speed so you can hold up other things as well. It can be used as a bargaining tool or even save your own creatures if combat becomes unfavourable in certain situations. It's also in about 5% of decks according to EDH rec.

    • @ich3730
      @ich3730 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      aetherize didnt perform well for me. its useless as protection, as players will gang up on you and bouncing one guys board doesnt do anything. Normal bounce sweepers are just better

    • @macmusial3644
      @macmusial3644 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like the majority of the time Aetherspouts is probably a better card, it costs one blue more but it puts the creatures in the top or bottom of their owner's library, which is a much better blowout since they don't have a chance to rebuild on the turn you bounce everything. It trades a bit of the flexibility Aetherize has for a lot of power to completely shut down an attacking player, which I think is generally better. It's also only played in about 2% of decks which is surprising that neither card is played much.

    Submerge has actually been pretty popular in cEDH for a while, since yes it's likely that at least one opponent has a forest which makes it a free spell, but it's also a one card and free way to stop a thassa's oracle demonic consultation combo if the player using the thoracle has no other cards for blue devotion. After they exile their library but with the thoracle trigger still on the stack, you just put the thoracle on top of their library and then their devotion is zero, and now they have only thoracle left in their deck. Yes they could potentially draw and recast it next turn, but in cEDH a full turn cycle is more than enough to find an answer for that, especially when everyone knows it's coming.

    One of my other cards is Summary Dismissal. "It can't be countered." "That's cool, but it's getting exiled it off the stack." It can also deal with an instance of someone making copies of spells, or even a random planeswalker ult if it somehow comes to that.
    I also like Cosmotronic Wave for my combat centric, or tribal decks with red in them. Also any copy or redirect spells can be nuts too. There's a few other ones I love that I can't think of right now.

    Credit voucher is one of my favorite cards! It sees no play, but I actually run it in multiple decks. If you care about wheels but you don't want your opponents to get fresh cards and you can keep any cards you don't want to get rid of and you don't discard those cards either. It's my favorite wheel spell

    • @Stray7
      @Stray7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually if I'm running a lot of wheels, I actively want stuff in my graveyard. If I want this sort of effect, I'll run Valakut's Awakening, which costs 1 less, doesn't need to be cast on my turn to have ready, replaces itself, and can be a land in a pinch if I need it. I mean, if this card works for you, it works for you (you can wheel in non-red decks with it), but it's not for me.

    • @monomanamaniac
      @monomanamaniac 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Stray7 I can see the argument, but I still think that credit voucher has its uses. Yes it does have to be on board, but in artifact decks that's actually a good thing. If you don't need to pay for it all at once then it actually costs less than awakening. The cards are shuffled in, so they're not locked at the bottom of the deck and you can pivot away from top deck locks from like scroll rack or brainstorm. I'm not saying it's the best, but it's in very few decks and I think it deserves a lot more love

    • @Stray7
      @Stray7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@monomanamaniac I'm not saying it doesn't have it's uses, just that I've weighed it before and it didn't fit the needs I wanted for a wheel. I can see the value in the shuffle and the fact it's an artifact, those are just synergies that the decks I have don't quite care for.

    3 of my favorites:
    Invert the Skies: 4 mana to make all your creatures effectively unblockable for a turn, or to do the reverse and make absolutely sure that you can deal with your opponent's fliers? Yes please.
    Brave the Sands: Vigilance is powerful because of how it leaves your creatures open to block, this takes that effect and neatly doubles it. It works really well in my Arcades defender deck.
    Volcanic Vision: This is a one-sided board wipe that can also get any instant or sorcery from your graveyard if you play it right, in my Narset deck I almost always win the game when I play it. One of my favorite cards ever.

    I love bioshift! Other great things about it, it can also just be used offensively too, not just to save counters. If you have anything out that interacts with counters being placed, like a doubling season, or a hardening scales or whatever, bioshift can make one creature with 10 counters into 2 creatures with 10 counters, or one creature with twice the amount of counters. Can also be helpful is say you were "forced" to build up the wrong creature with counters, once you get the right creature, you can just bioshift them over, and at instant speed too! So can even be used as combat tricks

      @ctomsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DontStopTheHustle Actually, they can! Just not as they're being cast. Targets are chosen as you cast a spell, so that spell hasn't become a legal spell on the stack yet in order to be targetable. But once its on the stack they ARE just another spell on the stack, so an effect that changes the target CAN change that target to itself as long as it's a legal target (ie Essence Scatter can't target itself but Counterspell or Dovin's Veto can!)

    I have two similar cards that do work in green stompy decks: Winds of Qal Sisma and Terrifying Presence. They are both 1G for a fog effect with a twist. Winds has a Ferocious clause where your creatures still deal damage. TP targets one creature to deal damage and the rest don't. Both can be used defensively if necessary, but their real power is by swinging and hoping blockers are declared in a way that theoretically favors them.
    The two combined are in roughly 3K decks on EDHRec. Compared with Fog's 12K, I think these cards deserve a little more love.

    So it was a decent call to grab a Magistrate's Tower I gather, that's sure spiked a bit. I agree Wild Growth sees too little play for how good it is, it's a powerhouse of a card if you don't explicitly need the 1/1 dork, or if you've already got all the ones you can use in the deck.
    It's a tad salty, but Omen of Fire is a good card if your Red deck doesn't like being interacted with on the stack, as is Boil and Boiling Seas. You can probably run all 3 in a Red deck if your power level is pretty high (and everyone favours Blue). It's a lot less salty now vs non-mono decks, because they run so few lands that'll get hit, but if you play against someone who runs mono-Blue, they're going to be having a rough go if they cross you.
    A card I didn't see people using but I tried out and loved is Phyrexian Purge, can be much better than Fire Covenant, but it's a serious oldie. Great in a deck that likes to clear the board, but doesn't especially want to lose it's own stuff, or that might have a short-term ally you want to keep it's creatures. Lots of weird and technically playable stuff like this from the Weird Old Days.
