Good thing you can find all of that context in the lyrics which are clearly audible throughout the song. But no, apparently we need to have a movie trailer play on top of the song, to be able to understand it.
Great reaction! This is THE song that really catapulted Metallica into super star status. They were very big and respected within the Metal community but this song and video introduced them to the mainstream. I really hope you can do more of the old school metal. There is so much great music that you will love. With you being a theater kid, I’d love to see you do a reaction to Savatage. The forerunners to theatrical/symphonic metal. Songs like Gutter Ballet and Chance are right up your alley! Once again, thank you for the reaction!
@@pkj77 nope. It was this song and the video. This gave them that push. That’s why the Black album exploded. People who would never have bought a Metallica album suddenly knew who they were. The Grammy snubbed helped quite a bit also.

@@mokane86 Without the "Landmine....." lyric "Darkness...." could mean a person suffering with mental health/depression, it doesn't tell you why. I think we will agree to disagree. Both lyrics are important
At the end of the video, I saw 2 suggestions in boxes--Anesthesia (pulling teeth) is one you should watch if you want to hear very early Metallica with bassist Cliff Burton (died in 1986). Worth it to watch & hear his incredible ability to play bass almost as a guitar player. Have a nice day.
This was the first music video that Metallica made. The song is from their fourth album And Justice For All. Bands like Metallica at the time didn't do videos because their songs were so long. Songs you should check out are Back to the Front, Ride the Lightning and Damage Inc..
You would love 'In Your Eyes' by Peter Gabriel. The version on Secret World Live is amazing. They changed the arrangement and added backup singers including Paula Cole who later became famous for the Dawson's Creek theme song
Actually we Were talking about what is now called PTSD back then, even before, especially in the 70s which with all the soldiers coming out of Vietnam, whom for many were mentally, emotionally and physically effected. It was still called Shell Shock and during the early 70s it started becoming a real issue with retuning veterans of war. It was probably the first time we all publicly started seeing the effects of war in our soldiers and really opened a dialog. I think music of the time with antiwar themes along stateside war protests were a big part of the conscience that opened up the public's eyes whether it was presented in a good or bad light, people started really talking about it.
Also the box over the face is covering something way scarier and worse. The dude doesn't have a face anymore. The nurses have to take the mask off, clean him, then re sew the mask back on every day. The nurse in these clips is the New Age Nurse (younger woman) and is the first to communicate with him after the injuries. She finds herself stuck in a situation she really doesn't want to be in every day also, having to treat victims of war
The movie used in this video and book it's based on are very creepy. It's hard to find a hard copy on video sometimes and the book is somewhat rare to spot in the wild also
I was reading the Morse code in your head bobbing, Charis, and when the tempo picked up you were repeating either "Bring me chili dog" or possibly "Bring me chili, Dog". Near as I can tell.🤔
This was from 1988, Metallica's 4th studio album "And justice for all"... which was their first top 10 charting album. It was also a very angry and intense record because it was recorded after the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton (who was killed in 1986 in a tour bus accident in Europe) ... James Hetfield (vocals/ guitar) wrote lyrics on the album that blasted everything, including his parents on the track 'Dyers eve'... For whatever reason, bassist Jason Newsted was excluded from the album's final mixes - he was also the recipient of hazing after joining Metallica... Lars Ulrich (drums) wanted his drums higher in the mix and faded out Jason's bass tracks. Of course, the (new) bassist was upset, and he would eventually leave Metallica in 2001 after 14 years in the band. 'One' was written about the movie (made in 1971) u see in the music video "Johnny got his gun" - about a World War I soldier who loses all his limbs and senses and still survives... War was a theme on past Metallica records ('For whom the bell tolls' ... 'Disposable heroes'... ) Metallica refused to make a music video on their first 3 albums... What was the point of blowing money filming a video when MTV would not play it? However, Metallica did the 'Monsters of Rock' tour in '88 and did better than all the bands on the bill (including the headliners - Van Halen) and the album 'And justice for all' sold platinum faster than the 3rd album 'Master of Puppets'... In 1989, Metallica were finally coaxed to film a music video for the song 'One'... which would be on MTV. They filmed it in a warehouse and put the original movie clips on it... It did make an impact and the album went 2x platinum that year as Metallica headlined arenas for the first time w/ Queensryche opening.
Interesting fact. The movie scenes in the video clip, from the movie "johnny got his gun" Metallica bought the rights to that movie, so they wouldn't have to pay royalties. Another interesting fact, donald southerland is in it. A very very young, hippy looking Donald Southerland lol

@@CharisSellickYou’re welcome. Incidentally, while you’re around, I had a quick check and I don’t think you’ve done any John Farnham reactions. You’ve likely heard “You’re the Voice” before, it should headline any motivational playlist, but he has a massive catalogue you should at least take a quick look at.
