The movie was based on the book Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo about WW1. It was one of three books banned for Allied troops to read during WW2. The other two were enemy propaganda. Oh please no…heh. I rented it in 1989 right after this video was released on MTV. It was 3 hours of pure misery and depression. By the time the movie was over, I had no energy left, I was completely drained. It was something like 4pm but I just rolled over and went to sleep, because I just didn’t want to do anything else, I didn’t even want to move. I’m never watching that movie again :P
I must say that I find your way of describing and evaluating songs truly fascinating. Your authenticity and expertise never fail to impress me. The emotional highs and lows, the powerful choruses, and the impressive orchestral arrangements make this song a true musical experience. I'm eager to see how you will analyze and interpret the many facets and nuances of this piece. Another song you absolutely have to explore is "Nemo". And then, there's "The Poet and the Pendulum". This piece is a musical journey full of depth and intricacy. Hi, friend! Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience. We are very sorry for what happened... Music has enormous power and accompanies us in many moments of our lives. That's why it's so special. Greetings from Argentina ☺
I think you were right to follow the story of the song and I could see it on your face during the video. Many songs are more than just the music, the context is important. For example Comfortably numb by Pink Floyd or Hurt by Nine inch nails as well as the.cpver version by Johnny Cash. In the latter case it's basically the same lyrics and melody with some minor adjustments to reflect the differences between Trent Reznor writing it from his perspective and experiences when he was in his late 20s IIRC, whereas Johnny Cash's cover is made from the perspective of someone at the end of his life. Also, Trent Reznor works a lot with sounds/noise in his music in different ways, so in Hurt there's this kind of static in the background which represents the void, and the distorted sounds are there for a reason as well as how he intentionally breaks musical "rules" and avoids a release after build up in some places. All to make the listener feel a bit uncomfortable since that's part of the song and feeling he's trying to communicate.

Metallica made the song based on the book. When they decided to make a video for it they found out that a movie had been made based on the book. They started getting clips from it and found that it was cheaper to buy the rights to the whole movie than to pay per clip, so they did. Now if you buy a physical copy of the movie this video is included with it.
Now that Metallica has a new album out, there's more sings to pick next. Speaking of, would love you two to react to some Megadeth, maybe Hangar 18 or Poison Was The Cure
i believe the movie is based on a true story. a the man was hit by a mortar and lost both arms and legs and part of his face and was begging for death. the doctor in the beging said if i knew how bad he was i would not have permitted him to live.
Hi, friend! Thanks for your comment! Exactly, the film is based on a book, a novel more precisely. We did not know if the story was real or not. Thank you very much for the contribution! Greetings from Argentina!
Metallica got this from a BOOK, "Johnny Got His Gun". They used parts of the film for the video. just making a correction. So people don't think the song ONE is based on the movie.
Thank you very much for the information and the correction! These days we will get a more detailed analysis talking about the lyrics, music and video clip. Greetings from Argentina! 🤘
The concept for the song came from a dream that Hetfield had, based on being a brain and nothing else. He described the dream to Cliff Burnstein who in turn suggested that he read the novel, "Johnny Got His Gun". After they decided to create a music video (their very first) they decided that instead of paying royalties for the use of the movie, "Johnny Got His Gun," they purchased the rights to the entire movie.
Hola amigo! Gracias por comentar. Una canción muy profunda, con cosas que no podríamos imaginar verlas en este momento de la historia. Saludos desde Argentina!

I don't know if any of you have seen the movie "Johnny got his gun". If not I strongly recommend that you do but I warn you now, it's very disturbing. Metallica did a great job in describing the "true" horrors of what WW1 was like. Trust me, I've have seen things that when I was younger no kid should ever see. I have family that live near Verdun, France. (which is like America's version of Gettysburg) There is an ossuary near the town of Douaumont and I've seen skulls of unknown solders, there are areas of that part of France called "Zone Rouge". You are not allowed to visit it because there are still unexploded landmines, bombs, human and animal remains. Some of the ground in "Zone Rouge" is still contaminated with traces of chemicals that were used during WW1. If you haven't been to that area of France, I suggest you do but be prepared with what you will see because it mirrors exactly what it's like in this Metallica video. It's not pretty. Even though I can only imagine what it was like during WW1, but with this video that Metallica did coupled with what I've seen visiting my family in Verdun, seeing the relics and artifacts first hand. Trust me when I say that "this hits home" and on some occasions it still hurts.
Hi, friend! Thank you very much for sharing this information with us. 'One' is an excellent song and the video clip relates in a very crude way what war means. Hello Arthur! Thanks for your comment. Yeah! In Argentina chimarrão is called "Mate". ☺It is similar, only that the Argentine erva mate is different from the Brazilian, Uruguayan or Paraguayan. One of Metallica's greatest songs...well, at least back when Metallica was actually a REAL Metal band. And unlike those so-called 'metalheads', I'm actually a Metal-er. And unlike those so-called 'metalheads', as a TRUE Metal-er I remember the decade-long feud that we-us Metal-ers and they-them Punks had from 1980 to 1990 (although TECHNICALLY, it was from 1981 to 1991). By that I mean that I remember Heavy Metal from the mid-80's, when I was in Junior High (the FIRST two Metal songs I ever heard were Haunting The Chapel by Slayer and Ride The Lightning by Metallica), while those 'metalheads' have heard Metal for LESS than 20 years, if even that long. But what do you expect from a bunch of 'Youts'. Just saying.
Hi, friend! Thanks for your comment and opinion. We were unaware of the term "Metal-er". We always thought that "Metalhead" was the name of people who liked the genre. Here in Argentina, as in many places in South America, the correct term is quite similar: "Metalero". Thanks again for your contribution. Greetings from Argentina! 🤘

Hello Donovan! Thanks for your comment. 🤘🏼 Greetings from Argentina
I’m never watching that movie again :P
. NO MOVIE NEEDS A REMAKE
ONLY MILLENIALS
Does not need a remake

@@OhMyMole You two really need to listen to The Warning. Three sisters from Monterrey Mexico. Daniella, Paulina and Alejandra are only 23, 21 and 18 years old now and have only toured in South America, the U.S. and once in Canada, but they just went over to Europe for the first time. Metallica asked them to do a cover of Enter Sandman for their album Blacklist, which celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Black Album and they made the song their own. Please listen to them! Search: The Warning Teatro Metropolitan CDMX Enter Sandman. An awesome performance!
This song could be a list of pstd, I have it from a surgery that went rather wrong,,,leaving me in my mind screaming, I couldnt live I couldnt die my body truely my holding cell as I crawled into my brain to survice it, rather relive that every day.
Hi, friend! Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience. We are very sorry for what happened... Music has enormous power and accompanies us in many moments of our lives. That's why it's so special. Greetings from Argentina ☺
@@OhMyMole Music truely is special one of the best things humans have created,
I think you were right to follow the story of the song and I could see it on your face during the video.
Thank you very much for taking the time to comment and tell us a little about how other artists work on their works. Greetings from Argentina! 🤘
If your an alt growing up in a society that degrades who you are and makes you feel like nothing, the you will understand, but nee breeds don't know that, but also the people who went and fought for us to live we don't know what they went through and this helps to understand stand what you believe in and stand for helping others
Thank you for sharing these words with us. It is difficult to put yourself in the shoes of our ancestors and of the generations that 'defended' the different territories. We were born in a historical moment where, in most countries, 'Peace' reigns, but there are other problems that should also concern us. Greetings from Argentina!
If you would like to react to an artist you might not have heard of before, I recommend Aesthetic Perfection with the song Gods & Gold. They’ve worked with members of Rammstein!

I met Metallica at a music store the oner is part of the rode crew tried to get some to go with me .people around me were not interested so I went by my self they were in the basement rehearsal. Sat right beside Jason newsstand
Hi, friend! Thanks for sharing your story with us. Metallica is an excellent band and they have masterpieces like this. Greetings from Argentina! 🤘🤘
Hello friend! Thanks for this information about the song and the video. Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷

Hello friend! Thanks for your comment and information about the song. Greetings from Argentina 🤘🏼🤘🏼
@OhMyMole I actually just watched the movie for the first time yesterday. It's a little strange at times but the story is good but sad.
METALLICA RULES1!!!!
🤘🏼🤘🏼
That kind of pain should be closed
Unless you understand the situation, it seems sad. With the understanding, you can feel energized.
Awesome band, awesome song🤘🤘
Until you have seen them in concert, you have not felt the energy. Sadly, they retired a few years ago.
i believe the movie is based on a true story. a the man was hit by a mortar and lost both arms and legs and part of his face and was begging for death. the doctor in the beging said if i knew how bad he was i would not have permitted him to live.
Hi, friend! Thanks for your comment! Exactly, the film is based on a book, a novel more precisely. We did not know if the story was real or not. Thank you very much for the contribution! Greetings from Argentina!
Thanks for the song Metallica and💙💛✌Слава Україні !
Greetings from Yorkshire UK to both of you. "What a sweet young lady!" Take care. John......
Hello friend! Thanks for your comment 🥰 Take Care
It's good to see a couple of Gen Z wake up to real life. Just don't blow it off.

@@OhMyMole I've seen Metallica 3x - '89,' 91 & '94 at Woodstock...... Now please react to MEGADETH - holy wars........ I'll be waiting
Yes. Their biggest song. Their other biggest song is Back in Black. And Highway to Hell. And You Shook Me All Night Long. And For Those About To Rock. And Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. And …
Wrong band bud 🤣🤣
If you want AC/DC, just say so. No point in being underhanded about it.
In some parts of the world this kind of thing continues. Hopefully the day will come where we never have to live something like this again. Greetings from Argentina! 🤘

People who talk crap about Lars. Need to watch this again. JC !!!
Lars is awesome. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Wow! You are drinking chimarrão! Didn't know that people drink this out of Brazil
Hello Arthur! Thanks for your comment. Yeah! In Argentina chimarrão is called "Mate". ☺It is similar, only that the Argentine erva mate is different from the Brazilian, Uruguayan or Paraguayan. You can notice that James Hetfield, in his concerts, takes "Mate" because of his ex-wife who was from Argentina and he instilled it in his habits haha 🤣 Greetings from Argentina!
First time i heard it it sounded cool till it slowely came to me its about someone who has been bowned up by a mine, and the taught of being a plant being kepped alive by a machine and you cant see anything hear anything and not able to move and the only thing you got is your inner voice, then i was thinking this must be the worst thing that can happen to somebody
The song is amazing but very disturbing. Undoubtedly a masterpiece. 🤘Greetings from Argentina
When you don't research the lyrics and the material before watching this video, you get confused...

Maybe it's time to meet 5 beautiful ladies in high heels and dresses playing classic heavy metal? For starters, I recommend the song Break the Wall from their earlier albums. Boasting over 70 hit singles, they won Best New Metal Band at the Metal Hammer Awards in 2018. The girls play heavy, thrash, power and prog metal, they also have some beautiful ballads - th-cam.com/video/5Pc0XK0lNmU/w-d-xo.html
ok
It's about war. The drums are machine gun.
Lars was amazing in this record! Greetings from Argentina!
Dude needs to get a bigger cup. Before the lyrics of the song started he had drank and refilled it 4 times I think.
Hello friend! Hahah, it's a drink called "Mate" in Argentina. It's like tea, but with the herb in the cup. You put a little water in it and drink, like this until the water runs out. Greetings!
