My grandfather owns one of theese. He has owned since he was a child, he hadn't cleaned it In almost 50 years when I got my hands on it and it still shot perfect. Amazing rifle.

Very nice mate , it’s great to find another guy that appreciates old school Aussie workmanship , lam a big fan of Sportco - Omark rifles and I have 3 x model 44s in .308 and 2 in .223 I have just picked up a .22 Clubman single shot target rifle which I intend to rebuild , I shoot f class standard competition using the 44s and the old school gentlemen give the boys with their $10,000 super bute setups a run for their money and all of them are 60 years old , I purchased the Clubman for a bit of fun at my local range which only caters .22rf at 50 yards , look after that prize of yours and be sure you hand it down to your grandkids. Steve

The founder of Sportco, Jack Warne, moved to the USA and founded Kimber of Oregon. He then went on and founded Warne Scope Mounts.
He only recently passed away in May of 2019.

All of which jave failed post his dimise....
Omark took over Sportco... didn't last long
Number formed on reputation, destroyed by budget watching
Warne, out maneuvered by the Millitary developing 1913 Piccatinnie.
All great ideas but, and when Jack was in control. Beautifully executed.

Good old Sportco, Dad had a 25-303 and it was the first center fire I ever used. He told me that Australia used to be very restricted in what you could shoot in certain areas interstate. Although We used 303 around SA west coast shooting Kangaroos and basically anything that hopped. Had all the reload gear as well ad that was made in SA as well I believe. Simplex? I believe he bought his in the early 50's. Oh the days when you could have any size ammo you wanted as long as it was 22lr, 303, 20 or 12 Gauge.

      Pretty much all true.
NSW and a few other states were rather over restrictive on Millitary callibers... thus the Wildcats and the shortened 303 appeared.
Roo shooters loved 303-25 ..... thus it became the most popular.

I have my grandfather's martini and picked up a 62s from a friend who purchased it new. Both shoot reliable groups with most ammo and as usual with rimfires a few brand types stand out. Can't fault either rifle. No harm to the environment shooting foxes and feral cats

Very interesting. Thank you. I have just acquired my dad's model 61. Perhaps a silly question, but I can't seem to get the bolt out. I notice you pressing the trigger to release it. When I do that, it still doesn't release. Any suggestions? Is something stuck inside?

They can be a bit tight.
Not uncommon for the trigger sear to jam in the reciver tube in either the up or down position.... pull the action out of the stock and soak in in Kerro. Give it a scrub and try again.
      If no luck. Sonic cleaner.

Strange people?! I resemble that remark!
You may like to know that the where the old Sportco factory once stood, now stands a Stratco.
