    Indian here. During British period these were some of the rare guns you could actually get licence for as a native farmer or such. They didn’t trust us natives with anything magazine fed, not even the guards 😝😝. The magazine fed version is actually quite common in Punjab, UP, or Bengal where a lot of these were grandfathered and they were modified.
    And the manufacturing standards of OFB Ishapore is indeed greatest in the world. They are an absolute meme even among our armed forces. One guy (a captain of 13 JAKLI)I knew commented once to me "people ask why haven’t we lost to Pakistan ever; well we train with guns made by OFB- if a guy can handle any crap made by OFB, pretty sure real war is less taxing than training to him"

      On another note do Indian gun manufacturers export their arms? When I was in India I researched the firearm laws and found the only new guns on the market could only legally be made within India making Colt 1911, Beretta 92 and Browning high power pistols very desirable. Makes you grateful to have the laws we do in Australia a sentence I would never say until I looked at India’s laws.

      @@CrazyDog651 No. Both import and export of firearms were prohibited in 1982. Indian gun laws are stricter than even Great Britain. And those 9mm handguns you mentioned cannot be owned anyways because they are prohibited bore weapons(9×19 is used by LEA so not permitted to civilian usage)- not available to general public. Licenses and permit cases are turned down 99%.
      All this, and you can get a Type 56 in a Shantitown 3 km from my home for $1000. Don't you love gun laws?

      @CrazyDog651 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dragonstormdipro1013 Yep I saw Prohibited bore laws but I thought it was just more laws to jump through rather then actually stopping you, because I’ve seen a lot of old Colt 1911’s in the English documentaries that I’ve watched about Indian firearm crime and defence with firearms.

      @@CrazyDog651 .45 ACP is actually NPB. That's why M1911s are a thing. Also it’s not "completely" doom. Gun laws have been quite laxed a bit recently, specially regarding shotguns. Also Glocks chambered in NPB can be brought now.

    Indeed, Ishapore can be…. somewhat sketchy, at times. I have owned a couple of them that were excellent quality. Others….. 😬… I had one from, if I remember right, 1931? It had its matching number bolt, which DIDN’T match! It was only locking on the small lug, there was a visible gap between the solid rib and the locking shoulder on the action body. This is extremely dangerous, I can only assume that when the rifle went through FTR, someone just stamped the serial number on a random bolt, and stuck it in, with no fitting up.

    Has anybody noticed that the rear sight ears are on backwards? Moving on, I collected Enfields for over thirty years. At a show I came across a .410 Ishapore dated 1912. Believing that I did not as yet own a 1912 dated SMLE example I purchased it despite its having been "sporterized" (fore stock cut off). Having a cache of parts, this did not bother me. I knew I could restore it to appear to be a standard SMLE. I did later, but when I got home I discovered that I already had a 1912 dated SMLE. WARNING! If you suffer from SOED (SMLE Obsessive Excessive Disorder), write down those that you want to add to your collection before you wander willy-nilly about. That was the day that I made "Note to myself," and inserted same into my wallet.
    Further, having restored my 2nd 1912, albeit a .410, I began to take it to my skeet range. (Restoration included a replacement forearm and magazine.) Now we have both heard how the SMLE is known for speed of action, I can vouch for it. Several times I have shot doubles using the thumb and finger on the bolt knob method. Try that with other bolt actions. Having said that, my .410 restoration does suffer from feed jams often, but not always. :) Two rounds is the most I put in it for this purpose.
    Note: When these were imported into the USA they are often rechambered to accept the 3 inch .410 cartridge (as mine was) to make them more sellable here. Check you chamber length!! Both 2 1/2" & 3" .410 cartridges are readily available here in the USA.

    In the UK i have seen quite a lot of No.1s converted to .410 which retain the magazine, mostly fixed in place. These include BSA and RF!. Most are single shot conservations but I clearly remember a couple which were a two shot never a three shot though, although I know they existed here. Henry is a lucky boy

    Hi from the UK. There were a lot of military rifles from around the world that were smooth bored in the late 80's and 90's as they can be held and used on shotgun certificates, which made it easier to hold a collection.
    Such Enfields were fitted with magazines which did feed feed but they were cut about so much they weren't any use for anything else. I know someone who had a Metford which was surrendered after their Shotgun certificate ran out and they didn't want to renew. I think he used it on Rats and Squirrels, this is more likely what 9 hole used.

    • @dsar9489
      @dsar9489  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes logical sence considering British regulations. The SMLE action was butched on mass here in Australia as a cheap 410s Similar to what many British manufacturers did. Slazengers were all single shot however with horribly chopped forends

      @@dsar9489 There's a 1943 Lithgow SMLE conversion on UK Guntrader at this very moment, a snip at £599... Whoever converted it probably wasted their time as it retains it's original magazine and so still needs a Firearms Certificate anyway.

      I too noticed the reversed ears.

  • @2009Berghof
    @2009Berghof 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Apparently, quite a few noticed the rear ear problem. Not really a problem, it is easily done and easily corrected. The ears will fit in either the correct orientation or backwards. The straight up and down vertical side should be positioned toward the rear, while the slightly angled edge should be to the front. Additional, Ishapore began eliminating the offset to the right side of these ears late in production. I believe after WWII. The offset was there originally to accommodate the MKIII's adjustable rear sight knob, which protrudes to the right. A MKIII* should not have the adjustable rear sight.

    you can fire form brass by putting the discharger cup on the end, inserting a tennis ball and firing a blank load of black powder in an annealed 303 case capped off with a piece from a cake of soap. Sometimes you have to launch a couple of tennis balls per case to get them nicely fireformed.

    • @dsar9489

      Seems awfully complicated for what can be achieved with just a wax plug.... also things get a bit funny regulation wise with the deathly expensive and collectable grenade discharger cup.

      The sight wings are installed as per the standard configuration of any other SMLE.
      I have only ever seen the sight wings removed on the chrome plated innocuous parade rifles caeried by one very specialist Australian unit.
      The sight wings can not be installed "backwards" as the inletting of the stock will simply not permit the "bulge" to be on anything but the right hand side.
