Just slightly before I started following football. What a season though! I think 1990 and 2007 probably rival 1984 for the wildest season ever.

2001 was crazy too. The last few weeks anyhow. 89 was wild too. 7 teams with 1 loss going in to the bowls. With like 5 teams still alive for the natty.

@@christopherfoote4643 After Nebraska lost to Colorado. In the next 2 weeks. Every 1 loss team in position to take their place vs Miami lost. First Florida #2 and Oklahoma#3 the final week. Then Tennessee lost a win and in vs LSU followed by Texas losing a win an in vs Colorado. And the only 1 loss team team left? Oregon couldn’t jump Nebraska who went from #6 to #2 without playing a game after a 62-36 loss in that 2 week span. Were now the luckiest f$ck ups in recent memory! P.S. BYU lost their last 3 games that year! Or at least 2 of their last 3. So they were a afterthought!

Who would make the CFP had it existed in 1984?

It is amazing that Jimmy Johnson would begin a whirlwind coaching run over the next 10 seasons, including 84. 84 would be rather nondescript. Even 85 didn’t reveal too much just yet. But 86 was nearly a national championship after an 11-0 start, 87 was a national championship, and 88 was as close as could be to a national championship-a one-point loss at ND in an 11-1 season. 36 regular season wins in a row from the second week in 1985 through October 15, 1988. Then, 6 more regular season wins to finish his college career 42-1 in the regular season from Week 2 in 1985 through the end of 1988. He switches to Dallas and goes 1-15 and 7-9 before rising quickly to 3 straight playoffs, including 2 Super Bowl championships. And then it was over thanks to Jerry. Johnson is in both the College HOF and Pro Football HOF, mostly for what happened at Miami between 1985-88 and the rise of Dallas from 1989-93.

@@CoreyT127 They lost to Hawaii and I understand they lost to Louisville and I guess I am stymied by the fact that Hawaii lambasted them. It's possible they lost momentum that is something I think people sometimes overlook. I can't explain the Hawaii debacle.

From my perspective it wasn't so much about Brigham Young crashing the party as it was them rising to the challenge. I suspect any number of teams might have been capable of beating them but it seems to me that Brigham Young was uniquely qualified that year. What people wanted to see was a title game between Brigham Young and Oklahoma.

Washington could’ve played BYU. But thought beating Oklahoma would hold more weight. Which is understandable. Not to mention the Orange bowl payed them 10X what the holiday would’ve! Which in reality was the biggest reason.

@@CoreyT127I understand there was incentive. But they also tried to sabotage the Brigham Young Cougars. They were invited and obviously made a decision impactful to the result possibly intentionally.
Oklahoma was capable but understated and that was reflective to their ranking. Marginally below Brigham Young. Definitely they might have beaten Brigham Young. But they passed on it in favor of a game Brigham Young was supposed to be represented to. That's a form of sabotage.

@@CoreyT127I understand that the Orange Bowl was a title game. It was probably the national championship game. But because Brigham Young finished undefeated (something nobody thought would happen). It split the title.
Brigham Young shouldn't apologize. They invited the best team available. Michigan finished 6-6. That isn't terrible.

Navy defeating South Carolina was a pivotal game that changed the trajectory of the national championship. Brigham Young might have beaten South Carolina. But it was Navy and Navy should be credited for it. Navy almost singlehandedly changed the result. Brigham Young beat Air Force. Air Force defeated Navy. Notre Dame defeated Louisiana State and Southern California. Air Force defeated Notre Dame. Southern Methodist defeated Notre Dame. Houston and Texas defeated Southern Methodist.
Boston College defeated Houston. Baylor defeated Texas. Brigham Young defeated Baylor. Boston College lost to Brigham Young in 1985. U.C.L.A. defeated Brigham Young in 1985. Belt Championship. Alabama defeated USC in the Aloha Bowl. Won a Belt Championship. Following season.

Orange Bowl obligated Oklahoma. Brigham Young was obligated to the Holiday Bowl. They weren't paired together. They put teams together in a way that made sense to those persons responsible. Michigan might have been the most unexpected team to be selected to the national championship but they began 1985 5-0. It makes the Holiday Bowl a title game. Retroactively from 1985. It would have elevated the Cougars to a title if Michigan hadn't lost to Iowa. Brigham Young shares a title with Iowa.

No, not necessarily. Florida and Louisiana State were still quite prominent. Louisiana State lost to Nebraska. Nebraska lost to Oklahoma. Oklahoma lost to Washington.

What a biased, commentary.! BYU stomped Washington University in the next season. And Oklahoma turned down the opportunity to play BYU in the pigskin classic. In 85. Switser, didn't want anything to do with BYU.! BYU winning the glass football, changed the whole landscape of college football.! The good ol boys from the sec and others vowed that would never happen again.!!. And so began all this organized exclusion.!.. and it's still going on today.! Make the playoffs fair. Play the games.! Simple.! What are the powers that be afraid of.!??... losing.!
