I lived in Horfield Bristol for two years and regularly walked along Gloucester Road. For me Bristol is without question the best City i ever lived in and the people are soooo laid back! 8-)
Arundel, West Sussex doesn't allow any chains in their town at all and it's wonderful. McMurder went and built their (chokes over the word restaurant!) in a field full of cows outside the town. "-) Great film TY and good luck x
Gloucester Road has always had a mix of smaller, independent retailers and larger national chains. I can think of Tandy, Homeplan, Spud-U-Like, Boots, Finefare, Kwiksave, Citroën & KFC coming, going or remaining over the years. Banks have always had a presence in addition to national chains of pubs, estate agents, off-licences, travel agents and bookmakers. It is the variety which has made it work so well. Later opening hours could do some good for local businesses...
I have lived on and off near the Gloucester Rd...but not there now.So it was wonderful to see familiar faces of the shopkeepers. Great vid!! Long live the Gloucester Rd. Let's not have Insane-bury's (Sainsbury's) expand on the G Rd.
I understand the concern of the independent trader but I think you should listen to this. Large companies / chains will move in where they see a profit so it should urge you to do the following: A: Ensuring you are courteous to staff and customers. B: Do not overcharge! C: Don't moan. D: Be open. E: Provide a quality service. F: Provide a choice. If you provide the above then customers have no reason to go to chains and the reason you moan is probably because you are scared. But, a GREAT VIDEO!
The problem with Costa in Bristol is that the franchise just keep opening without planning permission. Out of all the coffee shops near there it's the least busy, but like they say in the video, visitors will always head for the chain.
not a true representation at all.... over run with takeaways and bars and overpriced indy stores... no parking & barely a bristolian shop owner in sight...
I like the Gloucester Road area, but find I am being increasingly put off by a selfish self-centered viewpoint that anything to do with corporate chains is a bad thing. This is rubbish, as they are are more likely to increase not decrease local trade. For example, why should the person who owns a Coffee Shop be given protection because of the presence of a branded coffee shop? Why do they feel they are in need of some special trade protection? If nobody likes the Costa, they won't go there.
Bristol Council and their Planning Dept should hang their myopic little heads in absolute shame - the recent approval of the latest monster Sainsbury's in Horfield shows their utterly warped thinking. What in the name of Bonapart's Balls is more important: the commercial well-being of the last INDEPENDENT shopping street in the UK or the survival of a football team languishing at the very bottom of their piss poor league This stinks. Building a community centre and a few flats is a mere SOP.
Watching this in March 2023 after Covid and now rises in the cost of living and heating. I wonder who the shops that have had to close are?
My faith in humanity was restored after just 3 years of living around this local area. Much love to Bristol!
What a great video - showing what Bristol is all about - great city to live and even better people

That's my favourite butcher's there! Great stuff!
I love gloucester road, when I lived close enough I would buy all my food from independents, The butchers had some of the best cuts i've ever eaten

keep strong local business's, try and offer something the corps can't

At least 2 of the sets of shop owners in this are no longer there - Millards & Spice Route. Stop the rot! Keep it local!
