We made our community vote for one deck to represent each year since 2010, recruited 16 Pauper Experts to play a 5-round tournament, and now we bring you each match of the Top 8. Andrea is playing Felicia and either Goblin Goblin Bushwhacker or Pestilence could be knocked out of the tournament.

Game two was the perfect example of why WOTC doesn't print cards like Circle of protection anymore

The fact that a board of goblins could take down a deck built around steady life gain and dealing small amounts of damage to everything... Wow! It's like Pestilence was built specifically to take down aggro and the goblins just didn't get that memo.
tbf goblins DID get completely shut out in the game where pestilence reached its gameplan.
It just turns out that one of the best ways of stopping something is to just kill the controller before they get there.

We did it, gang! Gonna be real here - I went into this with very little hope. Bernas briefed me extensively on the match-up and it boiled down to "Really looks like you're screwed. That deck is built to beat you." But three games of tight draws and Andrea just stumbling a tiny tiny bit with me drawing back-to-back good cards in game 3 means we get to carry this deck to the semifinals!!!

gotta say, at game 3 at 12:10, I wonder if I wouldn't have kept that Gobelin cohort in hand to ensure I would play a creature spell next turn and enable my attackers. Not sure what's the best line of action here...

Well, I did what I could to get the deck to top 8. Was good to see the deck in action in Mengu's hands and it was even the first deck to go to game 3 this series. Goblin Bushwhacker is just a heck of a card.

I don't understand magic players loving burn decks. If you want to be aggressive and not think too hard, surely there's another hobby you'll enjoy more
@@josephmathes You don't understand why someone would want to compete with a streamlined and optimized rush down strategy that is good at countering slow-roll value decks? If you don't want to think at all before you speak, surely there's another hobby you'll enjoy more.
It is so healthy to have an aggro deck this far up to try and keep the slow decks in check.
Also I initially picked pestilence in the poll until I remembered how bonkers Legacy goblins is!
this is a perfect demonstration of the saying, "RED DECK WINS"
wait. Mengu was not kidding, thats how that deck wins! By pinging your opponent and gaining life with your mana base! Man, pauper is crazy!

I really enjoyed the gameplay in this one - tight plays, precise announcements and super clear communication between the players. Great fun to watch pro pilots - Felicia and Mengu new dream team!

Two things I learned
Pestilence is basically an orchish Bowmasters
Goblin guide is still an amazing card even at common with downsides
Well now you have Conditional Goblin Guide (its a 2/2 with haste if you have an artifact) with no other downside.
@@OtherSideLLC yeah it's incredible to see such an outdated list get so far when modern aggro lists feel so much smoother and faster

I wonder in hindsight if pestilence was supposed to mulligan more aggressively… but all those starting hands look solid! I know at the very least I would’ve kept those, although that game 1 hand I’d probably mulligan post sideboard since circle of protection red is so good in this matchup.

This is also an OLD goblin list. Nowadays you can do infinite mana combos and stuff with Gobbos in Pauper.
you should try an updated list, this has no cards from the past almost 10 years
I'm glad COPs aren't as prevalent in sideboards as they used to be, legal card but they always seemed so unfair, especially against colors that had no interaction with them.
Pestilence is one of my all-time favorite cards, so many weird brews you can come up with. This will date me pretty hard, but the most fun I ever had playing magic was when I ran a "time bomb" deck that built a board full of creature on-death triggers plus enchantments like last laugh and pestilence (protection through Urza's Armor). It wasn't the best deck once your opponent wrapped their head around the counterplay, but it did surprisingly well at my local tournaments as it disrupted most of the meta around that time - until Psychatog/Upheaval decks shut it down completely.
That 10 turn clock was really orzhovy

Felicia is great at beating the odds, great to see her win after the last matchup she had.
I'm all in for aggro decks, so I'm very happy for goblins to go through, easily piloted by Felicia... Even if it means Andrea loses, red decks make me happy.

noooo, I was hoping for the Pestilence win after seeing Andrea's MTGO video. WB is my favorite color combo and that looks like the perfect representation of those colors.
Crazy that goblins beat the deck that specifically kills small creatures.

5:47 The oldest card I own is a Beta COP: Red. I played it when CounterTop was still legal in Legacy. All of my sideboard cards could be found with Enlightened Tutor - which I could cast in response to the Counterbalance trigger to put whatever mana value I needed on top. 😂
Goblins been making me proud. They were my first actual brew all time, and it's awesome to see them win.
The only format you can’t build a good goblins deck in is standard (sometimes)

Eeeeeverybody was saying how this was a terrible matchup for goblins in the poll beforehand but surprise, expensive enchantments have a tough time getting down before aggro puts a clock on them!

since when has pacifism enchantment allowed to stay on a temporarily ability gained hexproof creature. hexproof makes not target of spells or abilities (enchantment). mtg arena has a bug in their legal rules issues.

When the meta is wide open you should always just play aggro. A little predictable but winning game 1 always feels good.👍
That's the nice thing about aggro honestly. All the sweepers in the world mean nothing if you're dead the turn you can cast them.
Is circle working the way he did? I feel like it pays 1 mana for 1 red source, in the game he pays 1 for all red sources? i am new to the game tho

Goblin decks are the texbook definition of "Here for a good time, not a long time."
The best combo in this matchup is Andrea and Felicia.
if you went with red you would have been able to play the first day with chatter and just keep some blockers up, them being 22s they hold up quite well and the turn later you can see what to do from there
that gives you more flexibility post draw
Both decks really showed up today.
I think in game 1 Mengu shouldn't have died at that moment, since Pristine Talisman's activation is a mana ability and can't be responded to. Probably would have died later anyway but...
Mengu went from 5 to 6 life. Double bolt deals 6 damage
Could have just responded to her own bolt after Talisman happens. Either way, still dead when the second bolt resolves.

Funnily enough, it is not. Pestilence is just a grey card :P if it was revealed it would have been at lower opacity and the Goblins deck would have been in the semis bracket :)

Mengu is clearly cheating in Game 2! Turn 2 Circle of Protection of Scoured Barrens (not the Bounce land) and then gains 1 Life. Immediate disqualification is the only way to proceed from here on out. :P
No? It's a turn 3 CoP which he cast using the basilica he played tapped on turn 2 after bouncing his gainland. Then he chooses to gain life via replaying the barrens and not activate the CoP. Seems legal to me, unless I'm missing something

You should make goblins only tournament, standard, pioneer, pauper, modern, legacy, vintage, edh to show differences in format
