He has divided Teentaal in 3 so it is 8 sub beats for each part. So each part takes 2 + 2/3 beats. (2 + 2/3) * 3 = 8. And he's landing on the last. That's why the postfix is 2 + 2/3. To make it simpler, here's how 8 beats are divided in 3 part. Every beat is separated by a comma : 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-1, 2-3-4, 5-6-7, 8-(1-2, 3-4-5, 6-7-8). He's keeping the part inside '(...)' constant.

I have cried, shouted and smiled while watching this video. Out of all Zakir sahab's videos this one is my favourite. Solely because his years experience is condensed in a light impromptu performance. So playful, so complex and Zakir sahab still manages to smile like a child in between the performance. Brilliant. Just Brilliant.
Yes, that's something that comes very naturally to him. He always becomes a very curious child when he's on stage. Ready to venture into uncharted territories with the curiosity of a child and the maturity of an experienced musician at the same time. It's truly magical! :)

This particular performance is best enjoyed by tabla players or music connoisseurs who understand the complex system Zakir sahab has incorporated in his performance with such ease. After watching this performance, I experimented with Ektal tipallis + ti na ka dhin dha on Teen Taal lehra. It took a lot of time and effort. And I understood that this is something you can't compose, it's something very intangible and one needs 'Mizaaj' to enjoy it.
Suvrat Apte Excellent video, thanks for sharing! I believe another mind-blowing thing about this performance is that Zakir-ji is making a musical 'in-joke'. Something that only someone who is intimately familiar with what he's doing will be able to understand or even hear. You can tell from the laughter (and timing of the laughter) from his audience that they are getting the joke! I have seen Zakir-ji incorporate bits of musical humor before in some other videos that I was able to understand. Music is the language that he uses to communicate with his audience, and when the audience knows the same language, how much better the communication! I once read in Mickey Hart's book 'Drumming at the Edge of Magic' that Zakir-ji explained to him: "Time is like a pie, you can divide it any way you like." This performance seems to exemplify that thought beautifully.
Fabulous. Before watching this vid, I thought I had heard Zakir bhai a lot. But after watching this, I think that was only a tip of an iceberg. There is lot to discover about the living legend, freak, brilliant, our own, Ustad Zakir bhai....

This is the first time I have listened without watching - it is even far more amazing! No visual distraction (even though he is WONDERFUL to watch). As a table player, you may not agree - but I don't play tabla😉
An extreme example of immense Riyaz and dedicating his entire life to Tabla, is Zakir Hussain ji!! I have listened to many musicians and learnt Tabla myself, but he makes you feel like a drop in Ocean. But when you keep listening, you feel like a part of the Ocean named Music. Respect. Salute. Love.

Gajraj Mohini yes you are right! In 16 beats, it would be 1+1/3. I've put 2+2/3 because the lay is so low that we tend to count 32 instead of 16. But I agree with you! :)
