American here, I always assumed Candy was just an abbreviated form of Canada or Canadian! I was vaguely aware that the award was called a Candy, it never occurred to me that it would be "named" after John Candy, as well it should be! A national treasure. Canada never ceases to amaze 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🇨🇦

I worked with Johns friend Rick Bennett who had been petitioning the Canadian Screen Awards to have the award nicknamed The Candy but they refused because they wanted to establish the award on its own merit. Norm was able to publicly override it during the live broadcast and make the name stick

Well, a lot of my presence in court I owe to my years at Yuk Yuks and other Toronto clubs so long ago. A woman approached me one day, said her son had just finished his undergrad and wanted to go to law school. Was there anything I could recommend he do to help his law career. Do a few years of standup, said I. After confronting drunken hecklers in a club, no judge in the world can intimidate you. Sure, you can't use the same lines such as "Hey your honour, do you like Star Trek, then Klingon this!" Okay, I used it once, but we weren't in open court, we were in chambers.

@@calisongbird , as a young neurodivergent child (definitely ADHD, maybe autism), I craved attention from other people but didn't always know the best way to get it.
I went through a phase of casually taking objects from people while talking to them. If they were holding something (e.g., paper, phone, water bottle), I would slowly take it from them and hold it, ideally without breaking the conversation.
That didn't really work. Esoteric animal trivia was also not well received.
I'm not saying that Tom Hanks' rapper son is neurodivergent or disabled like me, but it does seem like the privileges he has enjoyed from his dad (e.g., fame, wealth, world travel) have sheltered him to the point that he is out of touch with reality.

His character in Vacation was Paul Fistinyourface from SCTV, only less aggressive and violent. Ramis loved the character and asked Candy to reprise it.

When I was a little kid, Uncle Buck was one of my favorite childhood movies. I still love that movie to this day.
and his cameo in Home Alone. “The Kenosha kickers. We had a few hits a while back Polka, Polka, Polka.”

I am a huge SCTV fan from back in the day being a Canadian. One thing Conan left out was that Candy was playing his character Johnny La Rue who was playing Yellowbelly. He was in character while playing another character. The woman he shot was Catherine O'Hara, long time friend and castmate who currently stars in Schitts Creek.

I hope that some of Martin Shorts audio tapes are included in the documentary. A treasure trove of the parties held by the cast of SCTV and The Second City (Toronto). The parties were called The Services. I think that was the name. Often, when driving to downtown Toronto for work, I would see JC at his house on Avenue Road (look it up, yes it is the name of the street) on the front veranda with his feet up on the railing and smoking a cigar. The doc will be a must watch. Martin Scorsese is making a doc on SCTV. Amazing.

There are a handful of celebrity deaths that I and quite a lot of people felt more viscerally than most. I think for the fondness we collectively experienced from their work, the struggles they endured and hearing that they were indeed good people. John Candy is in that echelon. For me it also includes Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, and Robin Williams.

I can totally see him and Eugene Levy just having the resurgence that happens in the later part of careers for some. I think those two have a tv show and just conversing would have been the funniest thing ever.

Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, I now think of John Candy every Halloween, which was his birthday. 2020 would have been his 70th and Ryan made a lovely compilation of John Candy’s funniest movie moments to the tune of “Every Time You Go Away” by Paul Young. You can find it on Ryan’s TH-cam channel with the title “Happy Candy Day”. I just rewatched it yesterday.
