  • I take a nice 10 carat rough Montana Sapphire and cut it into an amazing faceted gemstone. The rough piece was found by someone at the Blue Jewel Sapphire Mine in Montana.

    I'm not an expert or anything of course but I gotta say, I kinda liked how it looked better before the heat treatment. That super gentle blue with the slight cloudiness kinda reminded me of a sky with some wispy clouds or something.

    I really liked seeing this stone go into a beautiful ring!
    I know a lot of people are going to ask about the value of the sapphire. Value on stones like this depend a lot on who it selling it and I'm not an actual appraiser, but I'd estimate the value of it cut and after heating to be somewhere between $1,000-$2000/carat. Before heating, maybe $800/carat. The piece is 4.62 carats.

      I just found a >9 carat stone in some Eldorado Bar mail-order gravel. It's a pretty nice sky blue color, but has some silk and will need heat treatment. Also, it's got some pretty big fractures down the middle. At what point do cracks make a stone impractical to facet? It's big, and has a nice crystal shape, so I'm confident it would be an impressive stone if it's possible to cut it. But if it's probably just going to fall apart, I'll just keep it as a mineral specimen.
      (I realize you can't evaluate a stone without seeing it, but I can send pictures if you're curious).

    • @iolightning

      Heat treating is such a gamble. Yes: color is richer, clarity generally better, and I'm betting the owner is pretty happy with the result. But... as a collector, I love brighter "sleepy" or silky sapphires, and an unheated Montana over 4 ct is incredibly rare. Well, even a heated one is incredibly rare! Thank you for sharing your process for weight retention while maximizing beauty. It really shows how an expert gem cutter uses science, art, and experience all together.

    I'm having a lot of fun searching through Montana sapphire gravel. I don't cut gems myself, so I just (today) sent a parcel back to Gem Mountain to have them cut (and some heat treated as well). It'll be a bit of a wait, but I'm excited to see how they come back.
    I loved the natural color of this one, but it was pretty cloudy, so I think I would have gone with heat treatment too.

    this is such a cool video i love watching the process! i noticed on a previous video that you use super glue to secure the stone and then wait about 12 hours for the glue to cure and i wonder if you’re familiar with CA glue? works the same as super glue, comes off with heat or acetone but can be sprayed to set instantly. it costs a decent bit more (i like starbond medium the best) but it might be worth looking into if it speeds up your process. keep up the good work it looks awesome!

    I'm a new subscriber and I love the content even though I don't know much about it. On the closeups of the stone where you're holding it, your nails tend to look beat up. idk if it's due to biting your nails(I do the same when I watch soccer) or if they get damaged from what you do for a living, but honestly with all the grits and shining and polishing and every other similarity to stone-cutting, nail care would probably be a cool side hobby for a guy who works on gems to pick up. Sorry if that's offensive, just something I noticed.

    • @Wearestarstuff84
      @Wearestarstuff84 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The cloudiness is caused by a mineral called rutile. The heating process reaches a temperature that is too low to melt sapphire, but high enough to melt the rutile. Once the rutile reaches the right temp, it diffuses into the sapphires crystal structure and produces the brilliant blue color.
