  • We review the Behringer tube monster, and see the way it sounds with multiple tubes. We start with the best tone and work our way back. This is a very surprising pedal, with a simple tube change the tone blossoms into something you would find in a much more expensive set up.

    Interesting to hear with the subtle differences.
    I tested 6 different tubes in a Presonus TubePreAmp and was surprised to find out how all except one tube sounded very similar.
    I found several 1960s new old stock tubes (AX7 and AU7 models) for around $5 each on Ebay.
    I purchased 2 different styles of each of the following.... RCA, DELCO Radio (General Motors) and the Highly sought after GE. They were all Grey short plates and long plates. Some with Getter rings some without. The only one the really jumped out at me and sounded noticeably different was the Delco (Radio) Short Black Plate with Getter D ring.
    I think the color of the plate makes a huge difference and is something that most people, not realizing, is very important. The color of the tube guts is where the big difference in sound comes from. The black has a snarl growl dark metal tone and killer for writing and recording metal and rock music.
    So after finding that all out I loaded up 2 of my Presonus TubePreAmps. One with the Delco Black Plate for great dark sounding guitar and metal sound and the other preamp with an RCA long plate for smoother rounder fully saturated sound for vox and bass.
    The GE everyone raves about, I honestly wasn't too impressed when I critically listened to all of the Tube in isolation. It was very similar in sound as the RCA and Delcos for much less money. I know the 1960s GE can go for $50 - $100 a tube on eBay, ridiculous prices. I found this one for $7..... Not worth any higher of $15 top price for what the sound is.
    I'm curious to try out a Electro Harmonics gold or platinum series but also going to be purchasing some more Black plates to see if it was just the one Delco that sounded different or if all the black plates sound similar from thst color difference.
    Anyway, just figured I'd share that knowledge with you and the community. The tube preamp design is really kool and fascinating for sure.
    Try finding a Black Plate Tube and sound checking it in the Behringer Vintage Monster.
    Let me know what you think if you do, I'd like to hear the results or watch it in a video with a wider collection of tubes that you try out in the Behringer. It's just a thought.

      Thanks for all the ideas man! A big factor in a tube's sound is the voltage applied to them. Most tube preamp pedals including this one run the tubes cool, around 9-18 volts which just isn't enough to hear a significant difference. I had a Blackstar pedal and the tubes were cooked at 300v! That thing sounded great and you could hear a significant difference in the sound when you changed tubes.

    If someone else hasn’t mentioned it, one sure way to improve the performance is to use a beefier 9V power supply. The one that comes with it is really wimpy. Whatever you do, get rid of the stock Bugera tube. I put in a NOS MILSPEC 1957 12ax7. It rocks so hard.

      what power supply? 12V instead of 9V? what power supply does it come with? 9V at 1amp?

    I just got one to add gain in front of my new Roland JC 120. I got to say..I love it. I'm thinking of using two..One for "metal" distortion and another set for high gain "soaring" solos with delay. Any suggestions on which tubes to use ? Thanks..Need a cheese burger now.

      I did a lot of experiments and surprisingly an old marshall branded 12ax7 sounded the best to me for hard rock/metal. Just experiment man! I really like the boosted Sovtek sound we got in this video. Thanks for watching!

    Did you try bumping up the voltage from 9v to 12v. My pedal boards PS allows this. There should be two actually, use the 100ma. Puts this pedal in a whole new range. Even also with the phase capacitor mod.

    I am waiting on mine to come in, and in all my other Bugera stuff i have Mesa's so maybe I will hit it with the Sovtec. Is this the LPS tube ?Thank for pushing it with the blues braker. Do you think you could put a TS in front and see how that sounds?

  • @Dwolfmusic

    Nice video bro, i've got the pedal too. What tube (not to expensive) do you recommend for playing funk rock/blues/rock ?

    • @ForsytheVideo
      @ForsytheVideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +SavingPrivateDick That's a tough call, because in funk you want a lot of high end to really cut through a mix, and in blues you want that warmth, that buttery tone. Really though you'll need to get something a little bit lower in gain but with an upper mid boost for the funk rock, so I would suggest a Sensor Mullard 12ax7, or if you wanna keep it on the cheap get the JJ's 12au7(you can hear it in the video). I think it was around 12 bucks, it's great for blues, lightly driven rock and you can funk it up with some high end boost on your amp. Thanks for watching!

    Hey dude, I'm considering putting sovteks or tung-sol tube in vt999, too bad you didn't test tung-sol.

    • @ForsytheVideo
      @ForsytheVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheap thing for you to test though. You can't really go wrong with Tung Sol.

    • @FEVfallout
      @FEVfallout 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ForsytheVideo Yeah, but I hardly bought the vt999(actually it was a gift), so can't afford ;). So far I didn't find enough tests and opinions, to fully decide that I want tung-sol ones. There is one common mod available, that adds an additional two tones, did you try it? Some dude sells parts and instructions for quite a lot(+shipping), but there are instructions online. You said somewhere that you would not use it live, why?

  • @FEVfallout
    @FEVfallout 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess you had a lot of dislikes, why is that? Btw I have Tung-Sol one now, and gonna make a direct comparison with reamping, also show the difference with phase cancelation. Just need to find some time to record and actually put the new tube in. Is this song somewhere else to to be heard? It's racing my mind recently. (Probably because there is a new tube waiting for me to use haha!)

    I would have expected the 12au7 to have a lot less gain...

    • @ForsytheVideo
      @ForsytheVideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope, did not increase anything. Keep in mind these tubes run at low voltages in this pedal so they do not react like they do when run at full plate voltage, things seemed to be more level across the board for this reason.

  • @FEVfallout

    Richard,try old Ei Niš(Nikola Tesla) tube lamps.Made in Yugoslavia,Niš,Serbia.I think they don't made anymore because company have same old issues.You can find old new stock.You can find all models of tube new in boxes! They are very popular,philips use them... I had them in my marshall head when I had it before...In some old marshall tremolo from 1974 and later in lead master from 1987.I had some foreign European ones, and when it came time to change, I put inside new Ei Nis, and I was thrilled,but i didn't try in this pedal,even i have one.I must to buy ecc83 and try. I will buy one,try and record video. I didn't start with my channel, my real is permanently extinguished, I upload something that bothered some people. When I post a video with that tube, i will send you.I'm sure it'il work better than stock bugera, and most of others. It's not because they're from my country, they're really good.If you like it,don't buy on E-Bay,the prices are too high for my opinion. They're worth that money, but you can find it a lot cheaper.I can help you with thet. Sorry for my bad english. Best wishes for you ❤️

      Stock supply, much more than that and you'll end up blowing some of the internal electrical components. You would need over 100v to really get the tube cooking, there are some nice pedals that do that. I'd recommend the Blackstar HT dist.
