    I bought one of these years ago to convert my Marshall MG250DFX to a tube hybrid amp. I think this is a great use for this pedal, to add it to a cheap solid state amp and get a good tube distortion. I have a Bugera 333XL Infinium tube head that I replaced all of the tubes with JJ brand and so I have a box with the original tubes with A, B, and C variants. I settled on the 12AX7B in the end. I might buy a TungSol or another JJ for it later on. This is a clone of a Ibanez TK999 Tube King.

    I have one as well. The tube it came with was okay it had decent clipping but sounded dark/lo-fi. I tried a new production Mullard CV4004 (12AX7) and it had buttery smooth distortion and a nice warm tone but it wasnt loud enough. I tried a Sovtek 12AX7LPS (LP=long plate) nice full balanced sound, crisp but also with plenty of bottom end, really loud but had too much headroom/late breakup. My GE 12AX7 was the second best with a bass and treble boost almost a hi-fi sound but with aggressive, raspy distortion when pushed. Great for eighties thrash metal. I eventually settled on my RCA 12AU7. All the best qualities previously mentioned but with early breakup. LOUD. Fantastic, rich overdrive with a lot of overtones.

      The Sovtek12A7LPS are made for 5150/6505 amps. Cuts way down on the Hiss while giving more gain. I about to try using this V999 Tube monster as the pre amp for my 5150 w/a JJ ECC82 in it for a cleaner clean break up.

    • @teahorseguitarstraps1856
      @teahorseguitarstraps1856 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, do you think the Sovtek tube would be good for getting warmth and tube dynamics without too much breakup? That would be my ideal. Something to "tubify" my sound when I have to play on non-tube amps.

    • @mcentee2
      @mcentee2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just got one of these and swapped in a Sovtek 12ax7LPS - really great improvement over the stock tube (awful!) beautiful creamy breakup, full low and top end, with great volume - I don't find too much gain at about 1-2 is still clean with breakup for me and a vintage strat.

    ECC81,82,83 have different gain and power output,so the sounds will be different,there are other 12???TUBES 12bh7 I think has two different value gain stages,as opposed to the supposed Av100 for the 12AX7,12AY7 was used in the Bassman preamp,lower gain just breaks up later as the input sig voltage rises,the 12AY7 might provide a nice smooth transition into break up.

    I have the Blackstar distx and tube monster as well...I prefer the tube monster..I hit the front of it with a tube screamer. . The tone controls are much better on the tube monster .much more high end..I am used to the sizzle I get from my Marshall and this thing nails it.

    • @KrachWerke
      @KrachWerke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was using both the blackstar ht dual and the behringer for a while. I found the behringer a really great pedal, open and great tone options thanks to the flexible eq. I used it to boost and boosted it. In the end I had to trim my pedals and opted to get rid of the behringer and not the blackstar. I guess I wanted to keep the high gain ability.

    Hi man, great video! Thanks for making this video.I have a question or two for you which you may be able to help with, or may be not? Anyways, how distorted can this go? Is all the distortion usable or does it turn to pumpey compress mush? You mention you use other pedals to drive it, well can you achieve a good stacked pedal sound with say another over drive or tube screamer style pedal in front of this? To try give you an idea of why I am asking, I need a rig for taking on planes, and I normally use rack stuff, so I need something that can get close to my ADA MP1 boosted with a OD/Tube screamer pedal in front and I'm hoping this can do that. Already tried a Radial Tonebone Hot British which was excellent marshal in a pedal, but after 2 o clock in the drive it turned to mush and got all pumpey an weird feeling with that amount of distortion. Also would not take a boost at all!! Hope you can may be help with the questions, if not thanks anyways man.

    • @KrachWerke
      @KrachWerke  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I made this video long ago and in the time that passed I have gotten a Blackstar HT Dual... a MUCH better tube drive pedal and it takes pedals extremely well. Have a check at it, amazing distortion. It also has a amp/cab simulation out (as they go not bad but I never feel they are awesome or actually usable other that home practice... cab sims on pedals that is).
      As for the VT999... it can be tweaked to sound amazing and has lots of overdrive (close to distorion) and takes some pedals well. For the price I would try it but also try a few different tubes as is suggested in some of the comments. I like it a lot for crunch on its own and driving it with a boost pedal it can sound very nice.
      It is not a pre-amp though in my oppinion. I have it in front of a pre-amp pedal and that works well. I guess it would help if I knew what kind of music you play.
      One drawback in my oppinion is that it uses it's own 9v power supply.. and in some situations it adds noise .

    • @RabidGerry
      @RabidGerry 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for that, I actually have been looking at the HT range also particularly the dual and the DistX. I play what I would describe as heavy metal. Some people might describe it as old school or traditional style metal. But hopefully you get the idea. I have heard the HT dual needs a bit of a boost for heavy metal, and that is fine, but since I need as little gear with me on a plane, one less pedal may be best route to go so the DistX is next in line. I have also been looking at the Ibanez TK999HT.

    Hello! I saw your vid a while ago, got the VT999 and threw an RCA7571-tube in it, works good, sounds pretty cool!! Now, trying to get a stoner/Doom-pedalboard.. I got the Behringer SF-300 fuzz, which I am going to drive before the VT999. IF this sounds cool, I think I might take the SF-300 components and stuff them inside the better VT999 enclosure, making a fuzz/tube OD-pedal in one enclosure. Am I right thinking that I only need to place the fuzz in series at the input jack, and pull the power, in series, from the power jack?? then ofcourse see how I can fit the controls on the top.

    I've had one of these for a few years and for the money it does make some nice sounds. My only sort of niggle with it is the tube never warms up properly compared to a running valve amp. I've not checked the temperature which I should do I guess, it works fine but i did wonder whether the tube was a bit superfluous and the main driving circuit was solid state? I can easily touch the tube when it's running and definitely would not do that with my valve amps! Just a thought.

      @@KrachWerke Thank you, very interesting. I was going to build a crystal radio that utilized a valve running on very low volts (excuse my ignorance, I'm a dabbler in life!) and I believe had no heater voltage nor high plate voltage, so I guess there are many ways to skin a cat! I was impressed with the Tube Monster I must admit and like all of Behringer offerings such incredibly good value that lets younger people (or strapped for cash people) get into the wonders of tremolo and delay etc. Being a brand snob is so boring, if I like a guitar or amp I don't care about the logo. I'm into Gretsch guitars but I have a £65 Gear4music parlor guitar wired up with a Chinese knock off Fishman and use it for slide, sounds great!! Thank you again for the info.

    Hello, thank you for the review, excellent! I bought one of these "monsters" and changed the original tube with a electro-harmonix 12AX7. It simply didn't work, it produced a nasty harsh uncontinuous noise. I tried again with another valve and it also didn't work. It seems to function only with the one that comes with the product. May be you know any trick or something that I'm not doing well. Thank you!!!!

      Are you using the stock power supply? The power supply that is included with the pedal is only 300 mA, which seems like a low amount of amperes for tubes. I replaced the power supply with a 1A power supply (that is normally used to power several guitar pedals in a a daisy-chain) and my replacement 12AX7 tube sounds much better than with the original power adapter (probably because the tube isn't being power-starved).
