BREEDING AFRICAN CICHLIDS & SELLING THEM TO LOCAL FISH STORES! | A COMPLETE GUIDE

- In todays video we look at breeding African cichlids & selling the fish you've bred to local fish stores in your area.
We first look at breeding the group I have chosen.
In my case I have chosen to breed the aulonocara stuartgranti (blue neon peacock) which is from lake malawi in africa.
1- Tank size. Minimum 29 gallon tank
2- temperature. 78 degrees
3-decor. Rocks to break the line of sight & a breeding cave/pot
4- Filtration! & plenty of it
We then look at signs of breeding behavior & then how to strip the holding female, to increase the numbers of fry that will survive.

Once the fry are free swimming we then WATCH THEM GROW!!! Over a period of 5-6 months we watch these blue neons grow before they are then caught and sold to the LFS.
In general, if you want to breed an aquatic fish YOU SHOULD! Tell your local fish store your breeding the fish & they will be interested. Selling locally bred fish is a big plus for Local stores & you can earn some money too!

Since then the hobby has gone to another level & now on my third batch. Seeing your time line in one video was great to see. HI CS... I have two stores that I sell to when I have them. The problem for haps and peas, my LFS don't want them until they are showing colour. So there's not much money in it unless you are big operations considering the time you have to keep them. Great share. Your fish are stunning,🍁💧💗😁

It's crazy, I've been in that store. I've seen that picture. I wanted to get a few of those fish but I had just set up my tank and didn't want to rush em in. It nuts how local you are. Lol! Looks like I'm gonna have to take a trip out there next weekend. Very nice vids bud!
Mike P thanks for the comment! They don’t have any of my blue neons in right now as I’m in a bit of transitional phase. Expanding & currently line breeding the blue neons. in the uk do you need a pet shop license to sell fish
Wet pets is the place I go most often to get good looking fish. I got a beautiful sulphur head and I have been hurting to go get some females for him. I didnt know they had blue neons or I would get some. I would love to breed about 6 types but I don't know if my lfs would take them. I have asked and they all keep saying they have a contract and are not allowed to buy off people. I love breeding my cichlids and they breed so readily it makes it fun.
Jose Rojo I sell some of my blue neons to wet Pets. But only about once every 3 months or so👍🏻 it was a great store though! Tons of great stuff you can get there
Great watch! I have purchased 10 juvies about 2 months ago 90% look female! Was thinking of putting into seperate tank with one or two males? Not knowing what the females are so several hybrids expected! My question is they are all peacocks, shall i put in ob males with them? I've seen many strains with ob markings! Or stick to say red shoulders? Sorry its a bit vague, just dont want to get rid of the females! Thanks!

Also, how often do the fry end up looking like their parents? I have two electric blue Jack Dempsey’s and the first babies they had were blue, but they ate them before I could get them out of the tank. All of their fry has come out silver since then. Will they only ever have silver babies now? Or is it really just hit or miss?

I have their most recent set of fry in a 10 gal. They haven’t had anymore since then. My pearl cichlids keep having babies as well and I have their fry in a 20 gal. Had to keep the one in my 125 gal Oscar tank and put the other in my 75 gal African cichlid tank so they wouldn’t have anymore. Fish are a pain in the butt haha

I’ve heard some cichlids won’t breed unless there’s a mirror or another male what do you think on this specific specie
Ron’s Outdoors I utilized a mirror at times but for the most part I didn’t use one. They breed most of the time after water changes👍🏻
What breed are the females again? I have a 50 gal and also wondering one or two males thanks 😀
Ron’s Outdoors the female that breed with the blue neon male were blue neon females but I put some random females in there too as dither females👍🏻

Travis Gilbert do you mean convict cichlids? Most fish stores sell convicts👍🏻 they shouldn’t be too difficult to find. They also breed very easily
How much do you get per fish
Travis Gilbert I get around 3.50-4 bucks for each fish. If I sell them privately like I sometimes do....I get between 8-10 bucks usually. This is a good avenue though, as I can sell all 30-40 fish together

Hello again, if i could ask one more question please, do you have to have a certain type of air pump for a hatchery or will any air pump do ?
PoooShooo any air pump will do....obviously it depends on how many tanks you want running on the sponge filter/air pump. But I just had one so used a tetra whisper air pump which has 2 available slots for airline tubing

FlowWagon my breeding tank at the time was a 29 gallon yes. It’s a great tank for breeding aulonocara👍🏻 I then transitioned to a 55 split tank for the parents & fry which is the second tank in the video
Cichlidscape • really enjoying the videos. I'm growing out some juveniles in a 29 right now. I'm over filtering my tank about 10 times an hour and do 2-3 water changes a week. Is it possible to keep a few adult males in a 29 together? I'm limited on space right now until I move and I'm restricted to a 20 and 29 gallon tank.
FlowWagon nice nice! & thankyou. I enjoy making them👍🏻 You could maybe do that. Just depends on the size and aggression levels of them etc. It may work out, it may not! If you do try it, keep them well fed & don’t have the aquarium lights on for too long during the day. Aggression issues seem to increase with light intensity & duration
They're selling your fish for $15.99 plus tax. What they pay you for those fish?
They probably only paid him 50 cents per fish.. If he is lucky.
