    I just started breeding obs. They had their first fry. Ready to start this awesome journey. Went and bought three 29 gallon tanks to fry and And I also bought 5 giraffe venustis cichlids for one if the tanks. I have a 125 gallon in my living room with 28 Africans and a 55 gallon with jewel cichlids. Jewels breed once and I sold them. I've been hooked since. Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping to be making videos soon. 😃

      Good luck man its very rewarding. I would concentrate on getting the breeding groups you want. Always go for quality and at least 1 male and 5 females if you can. Seems like you have some space so some 40 breeders for your breeding groups should be good

    Good video. Brings back memories. I used to know a guy in the late 80s early 90s who was a marine entomologist for a large electric company local to me, He is probably dead now or in his 100s. He had a basement full of Africans and went on collecting expeditions to the great lakes of Africa bringing back rarities. I had a line on the newest and rarest of the lake cichlids. I made decent money with a few 55 gallon tanks just letting them do their thing with no intervention and selling to local shops.

    I would say the temperature myth is definitely a myth. But good information other than that. This is something I've been interested in. Seems like it would be pretty hard to make it profitable though. A peacock should not take a whole year to reach 4" they should be well over 4" at around 9 months

      +Aqua Kri Thanks for watching. Yellow Labs are great starter fish to breed. We are now breeding Cynotilapia afra cobue, a rarer mbuna, but harder to get them to breed

      Me and my buddy got lucky when we picked up that 7 foot tank, it ended up coming with a whole bunch of huge Mauna, the big Frontoza, and 3 plecos. Been selling the mbuna on Craigslist, and almost have recouped the cost of the tank.

    Wow, this is so very interesting! I appreciate you sharing your very detailed information. You have such beautiful fish! Your tank set up also looks very aesthetically appealing.
    Okay, I have so many questions, but I will try to narrow things down to stay focused... ;-)
    You first published this video 2 years ago, are you still actively breeding? If so, how many total tanks and/or gallons and breeding groups do you run right now in your operation?
    At the 11:16 point in the video, you mentioned making $300-$400 with just one species, or one breeding group, in this one tank. Over what kind of timeframe did it take to make that amount of money?
    From what I've read up in my research, it sounds like you could potentially have about 8-12 sets of fry or fish to sell from just 1 species, depending on how big you decide to grow them to sell. Does that sound about right?
    It really does sound like a decent side hustle though once you get past all the major start-up costs. Are you maintaining pretty decent profitability now? I imagine all of your major capital expenses and sunk costs are behind you (equipment, supplies, racks, lighting, pumps, media, etc).
    Have you moved beyond Craigslist and FB to selling at swap meets or local club auctions? I am not sure what kind of auction scene there is down in Florida, but I have noted many clubs in my area up in the Midwest.
    Lastly, has your electric bill gone up a lot and are your food costs manageable? How many hours a week do you estimate you spend on feeding, managing the breeding process (stripping, moving fish / harems around, etc.) and doing water changes and such? Time is money, after all. I suppose building an efficient set up is key.
    Thanks in advance for any and all information you will be able to provide on the specifics above.
    It's late now, but I am making a note to check out the rest of your content and answers to other comments to add to the knowledge bank.
    If anybody else in TH-cam-land wants chime in, your 2 cents would be much appreciated.
    Cheers!

      Thanks so much I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I am still breeding but have been slacking on promoting sales. I have since then made a 150 gallon pond for growouts and in 1 month made about $400 on the side selling 2-3" fish. I still sell on CL, FB, and Instagram. I decided to sell most fish once they got color to make more profit. I take videos and pictures of the fish with color and they sell pretty fast

    I just had a Hap Moorii breed with a peacock in my tank. Is that what you are calling a hybrid? In a mixed african tank, how do you know who the father is when they breed if you don't catch them in the act?

    • @southfloridaafricancichlid6423
      @southfloridaafricancichlid6423  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that would be a hybrid. Usually hybrids are when 2 different species peacocks or haps mate.
      With peacocks it is pretty common, and their body shape is mostly the same, with haps it can get a little weird.
      If you have a mixed tank and have fry they are considered hybrid.

    • @lwinters1981
      @lwinters1981 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@southfloridaafricancichlid6423 I guess it's a crap shoot on what the offspring will look like. I am debating about stripping at 3 weeks and putting them in a separate tank or just letting nature take it's course when she spits them.

    Just an FYI I’ve Ben dealing with fish all my life and working with fish and water quality all my life and ofcourse in a fish tank like yours loaded with male peacocks your not going to put a few minnows but for me being a life long hobbiest my system is about 4,500 gal and I’ve had 10 to 15 different Male species of cichlids about 40 koi 4 Oscars a tiger shovel nose red tail cat just under 10 angle fish 10 Grammies and a much kinder list of tropical fish tetra and tons of live bearers sword tails guppies minnows Molly’s and so on and I’ve never had to add any more since the first time I ever added them and I have thousands of live bearers I’ve actually always had sword tail Molly’s mixed in with my cichlids just wouldn’t be possible in a setup like yours but doesn’t apply to everyone.

    Selling hybrids on Craigslist is a big problem for the hobby as they aren’t as nice looking and they end up being liabilities for whoever buys them. I don’t think you should be promoting it in this video

    • @southfloridaafricancichlid6423
      @southfloridaafricancichlid6423  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The hybrids I have sold have been very nice. The buyer knows exactly what they are before buying, and some people rather pay $5 a fish instead of $10. Thanks for your concern though
