- After John Tavares opted to sign with the Maple Leafs instead of remaining an Islander, a matchup between Toronto and New York on Thursday, February 28th, 2019 became must watch TV. It would be Tavares' return to New York.
Islanders fans didn't exactly give John Tavares a warm welcome.

The team honored his wishes at the trade deadline, then he quickly ran to Toronto leaving the Isles with what could have been picks and or players for their best asset.

Ryan W if he insists to not be traded at the deadline and consistently states he wants to be a life long islander, then proceeds to sign with another team? Hell yes... If we receive his value in assets and leaves with class, I will personally go to his return game and cheer him on the entire night. Do some research, this isn’t baseball. Faces of franchises don’t test free agency and leave there team with nothing in hockey. Think about what we would have gotten for him at the deadline had he not snaked around being traded
To tell you the truth I saw that at the game and agree it's sad when that happened. But, the tribute video was about 1 minute and 30 seconds or so long, so I couldn't include the whole thing in this video. If you'd like to see the whole fans reaction to the entire tribute video, I posted that as well in a separate video!

Tavares gave the islanders the best 9 years of his nhl career and he was thanked with bad defense worse goaltending and the final straw was doing NOTHING at the trade deadline last year. If he stayed he would have to have his head examined.
I agree Tavares owed that franchise nothing but they did nothing at the deadline bc he asked to not be traded (hence why they’re chanting “please don’t trade me). He then leaves in the off-season and the Isles get nothing from it. That last bit is the part I understand is hard swallow and kind of a dick move on his part. The only thing a Leaf fan should be upset about in this situation is if they were hoping for something other than Tavares. Now, don't get me wrong.. Tavares has been great but we had different needs and still need them. Unless these stars can score and play defense, I don't see them going far in the playoffs. As a fan I remain optimistic but that's the truth of it.

If JT said he wanted to be traded you would be mad at him. If JT said he wanted to test the waters of free agency you would be mad at him. I don't understand why Islanders fans are complaining because if he didn't lie last year(and said he wanted to be traded), you guys would be screaming BLOODY MURDER to him and his family because he wanted to get the hell off the Island. I just think its very disrespectful to burn jerseys, duck tape jerseys to the road and to have 17,000 fans scream asshole. You don't have to like his choice but you guys pushed it way to far. After that, I have no sympathy nor will I for islanders fans anymore. They've made it clear they don't need anyone. They have a number one team in metro, surly they won't be knocked out of the playoffs. The cup is theirs. You know the only reason they are crying is because they didn't get anything back for Tavares. It's pathetic, multiple teams have had big named players leave their team after becoming free agents. its funny because all the anger should be directed towards ownership and garth snow. they are the reasons that all of this happened and then in the 11th hour the islanders act like a real hockey team but obviously it was too late.
It's the way that he left and the fact that he cost them draft picks that has the fans so mad. Last seasons they could've traded him to someone for at least a 1st rounder but he said "please don't trade me" and someother things along the lines of that he wanted to spend the rest of his career with the Islanders. So when it came time for him to sign that new contract with the Isles that he basically promised he would sign instead he went north to a team that offered him 500k less for him to sign on leaving the fans broken hearted, and the Isles with nothing to show for it. hey 'ya'll' it wasn't for 'making a mistake' it was for putting no effort at all in to the game. Gardiner is a joke of a player that was fucking -5 in game 7 against boston. It's like he doesnt try. He so so many mistakes every fucking game that's insulting. And for a franchise that has been so unsuccessful for so long in yet STILL charges by far the most money for tickets, merchandise, tv broadcasts, etc. fans have every right to complain. You don't have to spend 500 dollars for a ticket to a home game just to see your team lose for the 50th year in a row.
I gotta admit that there chants went a little to far but it was the way Tavares left the franchise hanging ,telling ownership that he was staying .So he could control where he went and not traded to another team not of his liking.Leaving the isles hanging with nothing in return....
