Please Read: I apologize for the Ad that youtube decided to slap onto the beginning of this video without my consent. Apparently music being played in the background at a "live sporting event" is grounds for them to strip me of my own rights to this video (basically). Ridiculous. I may take the video down & repost a new edited version (not sure if I will do this yet). I can understand if you blatantly use someone else's music in your video, but background music being played at a live sporting event? C'mon... Give me a fucking break...
February 28, 2019: John Tavares Returns Home to The Nassau Coliseum for The First Time as a Toronto Maple Leaf!! Excellent Warm-Up Footage!! It was Insane!! If you couldn't make this epic game, this video will give you a nice glimpse into a night that was simply unforgettable!! If you're an Islander fan, Toronto fan, or just a hockey fan in general, this is a must see video!! It was 8 months of pent up anger & aggression by a jilted & emotionally stunned fan base that was just waiting for his return; and being a die hard Islander fan myself, & with Tavares being my all time favorite Islander, I must say his departure cut deep!!
I don't blame John though (nor do I hate him / he's human / & he was an awesome Islander); I blame the organization for his departure.
For starters, if the organization knew what they were doing, he would've been locked up & signed for life (at least) 2 years before free agency! He should have never been given a chance to even sniff free agency! Aside from that, they created such a shit show around him with all of the Brooklyn bullshit, the poor teams, poor coaching, & a GM who just had no business being a GM. So it's no wonder he started having thoughts of leaving...
But as brutal as his homecoming was, it was parallel to the emotional hurt he put on the fan base by leaving... He was the best Islander to come along since Bossy, & I think that says it all.
But this game... holy shit... I never saw a fan base react the way they did that night... I knew he was going to be crucified, but it turned out to be even worse than I ever imagined it would be!
This video is just a glimpse of that night; but it will definitely give you a good feel for how crazy that night actually was! Believe me when I tell you, it was insane! Enjoy!

I think where it went too fat was when one of the fans threw a jersey at Tavares. I'm all for allowing the fans to chant whatever but I think it crosses the line when a) it gets physical and B) they start attacking the family of the player which i think is going too far. From what I heard a lot of the Isles fans weren't happy that the fan threw the jersey at Tavares.

So fun fact, when they aired the tribute video, MSG+ showed that on the broadcast rather than going to commercial, but they muted the crowd so we couldn't hear the boos. They also managed to find the only 2 Islanders fans in the building who clapped during the video.
Also: If you look closely, Mat Barzal is the only Islander not giving him stick taps during the video. He hates the guy just as much as we do.

Red Wings fan here, this reminds me of when I attended Sergei Fedorov's first game back at Joe Louis Arena in 2003 since bolting to Anaheim - it still wasn't this brutal as what Tavares had to face. Would have loved to have been at this game, the Coliseum sure sounded like it was rocking.

I don't blame the fans. I was disappointed that they booed him during the tribute. I will say that I thought that was low. Fans still being salty four years later is a bit much. The fact that they've had a lot of playoff success and he's had little along with Barzy resigning makes it a much easier pill to swallow

Alan Harper - People take this stuff way to seriously. You know they charge arm and a leg for those jerseys. That is burning money. I just have an Islander shirt and hat. No Jersey. Some of those Jerseys are $170-$200. I can buy a new 3 season sleeping bag, light pair of hiking boots, a light Gortex rain jacket, etc. Basically a lot of clothing and gear that I can have fun in. I love my team. But there are limits.

He wasn't harmed or hurt - he was given the same respect back he gave to the fans when he should have been honest about not wanting to stay. Anyway the rehab and his meds (he has Bi Polar) really helped. But he did not play all the games. Just slightly more than half. A good team defense helps goalies also. I thing Griess (Isles other goalie) said it is easier when you know where the shots are coming from.

It’s so funny to me that this many people hate on John Tavares considering he is like one of the most humble and respectable people in the league. And then you remember the worst thing he’s ever done in his career is… sign with a different team during free agency… something almost every NHL player has done lmaooo

The islanders offered what he was offered at Toronto also with a lower tax cost due to Canada then he posts at stroke of midnight a picture of himself in a Toronto bedspread. I was at this game and the only game that rivaled this one in vitriol towards another team and player was when the Islanders played the Leafs in game 6 of the 2003 playoffs, after Toronto hurt Peca and Jonsson in game 5 in Toronto.
