I bought mine at a household auction, got into a pissing mach with another guy and ended up paying $151 I think. Got the watch after paying, and it was old, abused, neglected and almost junk. Got it sent into Rolex and they sent it back looking like new for $560.-ish. This was 1990-1992 ish. Now I have a Rolex that no one else does !!!!!!
Are there any under 40mm that aren't trying desperately to be the center of attention? That's been my biggest issue with Bulova as a whole. Much of the modern stuff tries too hard and is thoroughly stuck in a 00's shopping mall.

I looked on Amazon and could only find one (classy) Precisionist watch that I purchased five to ten years ago (Bulova Men's 98B156 Precisionist Champagne dial Watch). This is a shame! I really like the Precisionist movement but in a subtle, classy body.
Not sure why it wasn’t mentioned, but the Tudor Black Bay 58 is the Rolex Submariner by another name. I know Tudor was already mentioned for the GMT, but Omega was already mentioned for the Datejust. Definitely should have gotten a reference for the above $1K category.

I have worn the Burberry The City Chronograph watch, which I have had for over 10 years and still one of my favorites for every day use (working in the ER with repeated hand washing), back then was $500, but probably discontinued; the metal band and beveled links gives it a sparkle when light strikes the wrist. Substantial in weight but timeless without robbing your wallet.
Grand Seiko crafts spectacular watches, with breath-taking precision that makes Swiss watchmakers weep and the most beautiful faces in the world. Delighted to see one mentioned here.
I love that the first alt shown is a Casio Duro. I have 3 of them myself. Awesome work watches. I purchased my Milgauss solely for the anti-electric function and that sexy second hand.
It's funny, I'm big into Omega. it started as getting alternatives to Rolex, but at this point I don't think I'd trade my collection at all for Rolex's offerings - even though I still think they're classic.
If you are keen on quality watches but don’t want to part with the cash it is worth checking out vintage watch stores. Most larger cities have them. Pick a reputable one. Many even provide warranties and offer great advice. You can get most high end brands for less than half of new price. We are talking about watches that are cleaned and serviced and will last a lifetime. Avoid pawnshops because provenance is sketchy sometimes. Also buying online is risky because you don’t want to spend big bucks and discover the band doesn’t fit your wrist. Recently purchased a Tag 2000 series. Paid $800 and I swear looks brand new. Seen them cheaper on eBay but you don’t always know what you’re buying. Anyway it’s worth considering
I wear a blue Duro every day. Just changed the awful rubber strap for a nice leather one. If it dies today, I’m going back to Walmart to replace it. I think it was a fuzz over $50.
As an OP alternative, let me propose the Seiko SNXS79. An automatic watch that goes for under $200, and has a look that matches the discontinued OP 39MM with the rhodium dial. I have one and would recommend it!
I am very happy of my Orient Bambinos (3 of them), particularly the small seconds one. If I had the cash to splash, I'd buy a Longines Heritage (Flagship or Conquest).
They are good watches, a bambino was my first watch and at first I was pleased with it, but after discovering the vintage watch market I don't wear mine anymore. For the price of a bambino you can buy a vintage swiss watch and get it serviced, and you'll have a much higher attention to details, a wonderful and precise swiss movement, and a readonable case size instead of the huge 40 mm.
Let's see... Steinhart produce great alternatives for the Submariner and GMT Master 2. In addition they have vintage style models which would be very difficult to obtain. Long Island watch make a great alternative to the datejust. As for the daytona, I would look at Seiko Speed timer. Another GMT pick is the Baltic Aquascaphe GMT
They were avoiding homages, so no Steinhart, and Islander Brookville might still be too close for comfort. Yes to the Seiko Speedtimer and Aquascaphe GMT, though.
The obvious choice for a chrono is the Omega Speedmaster which is one of the most iconic chronographs ever made. I get it though, it you wanted to you could put an Omega in every category to compete with Rolex with the GMT being the only exception as Omega tends to put GMT functions on existing models for the most part and no real GMT line.
Not really a watch enthusiast but a Timex Easy Reader works for me. I used to have a couple pocket watches but ended up donating them which I do regret now. Appreciate the content as always.

There are alot of good Swiss watches out there you may have never heard of mines a Candino Chronograph the motor actually a Tag Huer, its a well-built rectangular watch everything luxury for under 500€ Try the whole Certina group as well as Glycine, Mondaine some less than your average Seiko but not as well known in the US as here in Europe. Breitling watches for a little more are loved even by the critics.
Not wanting to get into the price points of Rolex I have acquired several of the models you used as examples in your video. Over the years I have acquired the Omega Aqua Terra, Tag Heuer Aquaracer, Omega Speedtimer, and most recently the Tudor GMT(Pepsi). Love them all but all are so much less that Rolex. A few of them, I think are equal in quality to Rolex in both design and function. Not sure if I will ever get a Rolex, maybe for retirement, yea, a nice gold Datejust, or not.
I would rather have a Breitling Chronomat Automatic as a substitute for the Justdate. Swiss made, 36-40mm case, elegant, many combinations of dials, faces, and straps, and still enough of a status symbol for anyone familiar with the brand. While Rolex is synonymous with sailing, Breitling is synonymous with aviation. The AVI line would be my choice in a chronograph watch. They’re big, but still stylish in a more casual setting and the high contrast face is large allowing it to be much easier read than their gimicky Navitimer, especially while flying.
The funny thing is that I actually think the Omegas are better looking than the Rolex in a lot of these. Ill take a Seamaster over a Submariner any day!
Wouldn't the Air King be entry-level? Still costly but I always thought the Air King was their entry-level timepiece. Absolutely love my Omega Seamaster, found a lightly used 007 Seamaster from Tomorrow Never Dies and will be passed down to my son when I'm gone.
I learned this lesson early from my uncle: he is wealthy enough to easily afford Rolex watches but he is not one to front for the sake of posturing. And he always said there are cheaper options with just as great a movement and design - so why would he waste money? Since then, I have only bought Seikos which have yet to disappoint me.

I am 28 (soon to be 29) and these last few weeks I have been going through some changes in my mental. I swapped to wet shaving and now love shaving (thanks to this cannel, Kirby Allison, and shave nation), I use beard balms and oils along with soon to be beard butters. All this has combined to make me rethink my image which was very no F's given. I would wear whatever I had around that was clean. That all being said gentlemens gazette has really inspired me to look into the 1920's-1970's dressware and things alike because I just love that dapper or gentlemens wardrobe style. I want to now get into casual dressware, business/ professional dressware. I know this is going to take a long time and even years of investment to get into this dressware style. I don't mind the transition taking a long time so long as I can get there before I turn say 35. With ALL of that being said. Where do I even start the transition. Shirts? Pants? Shoes? There's so many things to account for after watching so many videos from this channel. It would honestly be alot easier to make this decision with some help from you folks by making a "how to transition your wardrobe" video. I don't have alot of money I can just drop at once so having thar kind of video would help me decide what kind of pieces of clothing I should be looking to first

Looking through their current catalogs, anything either brand has that could be comparable in style to a Rolex tends to have much larger or more awkward proportions that don't wear as elegantly, and the stuff that is well-proportioned isn't directly comparable.
There seems to be a misunderstanding. They were introducing alternatives *to* the Datejust. They introduce the Rolex model first, then the alternatives.
I have two watches than looks almost like a Rolex submariner and a Rolex datejust the submariner alike is gold pleated and the datejust alike is in stainless steel the brand is max time at is like 99 percent cheaper than a Rolex obviusly isnt the same quality and beautiful as a true Rolex but they got the soul of the Rolex watches
Not to be negative, but the premise of this video is somewhat useless. People aren't buying a Rolex because they're stylish; they buy them because of the brand and status symbol. If you want a Rolex, you're better off skipping these alternatives and just saving up for an actual (gently used) Rolex. TL;DR There are no alternatives to status symbols.
I've got the tissot gentleman powermatic 80 silicium (in blue), not even remotely close to rolex caliber, but I'm sure it's style will stay priceless for my entire life.
The timex is such a bad alternative to the datejust... owning a watch that is only a bad copy of another one looks cheap, if you can't get the rolex just buy something else but with its own personality, the hamilton, omega and grand seiko are all good choices (even though I prefer swiss watches, so I don't think I'd pick the grand seiko) and there are lots of other good swiss houses (my favourite is longines since it as a good quality and an accessible price). Also as a lover of vintage watches I prefer buying old swiss watches at a fraction of their price and then get them serviced, the older designs go perfectly well with classic menswear outfits and you'll have at your wrist something different from everyone else.
Agree on Orient. I have a Submariner that I love, but the my Orient Kamasu is also a great watch. I have a handful of different straps that make it fun and stylish.
Fed is always class! Nice video gentleman. I have been lucky enough to have owned a 2015 sub and a datejust from 1988. Both no longer with me as the money was needed for house. My Seiko will do just fine until I can move back into the luxury tier.
Right now probably the only Rolex that I'd buy might be the Rolex Submariner.....although that also has competition. Rolex is losing its "dope factor" or "cool factor" to me. It used to be a professional's watch. Now it tries to be aa rich man's watch but it will never get close to the "Holy Trinity" or Audemars Piquet, Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin.
Rolex is the KING, heritage, and is an actual watch that does why it’s supposed to. With that said I agree with alternatives, but I do not like the copycat theory. Might as well save for what you really want.
Yes. If you want to wear a Rolex, you need to commit to the image. Wear tailored clothing, drive a nice car, live in a nice house, etc. People will see through you very quickly if you're "watch poor".
I'm personally very fond of a lot of low end Chinese watch brands, yes they are on the homage side, not copies or knockoffs, but at the same time Rolex doesn't own the rights these watch sizes and shapes. I'm actually thinking about buying a Pegani GMT watch rn

My * "expensive" / collectable watch is my Luminox 3500. I bought it new, @ 1/2 price, as a "shelf model." That said, I've been a Seiko fan most of my life. but actually favor Timex.

The company's *reputation* was built entirely on marketing stunts and half-truths masquerading as innovation, and are the largest watchmaker by volume in Switzerland despite pricing and availability-because the demand for Rolex above all others is just that ludicrously high. They are possibly the finest example of successful marketing on the planet, and Apple is right up there with them. Reputation is marketing. Marketing is reputation. They go hand-in-hand.
Rolex is an overrated brand, they are made for people that has money and knows nothing about watches. there are far better (in so many ways) options out there.
It's an awkward price range where not a lot of direct Rolex alternatives end up. Loads of other unique and interesting stuff, though, and much of it is German.

The Rolex Datejust is the best designer ever imo. I know a lot of watches but this looks so luxurious and perfect for literally everyone.
I own a $525 Citizen Eco-drive Promaster Diver watch that is virtually identical in appearance to the much overpriced Rolex submariner watch.
I'm surprised you didn't include the seagull 1963, it's such a good watch for the money!

There seems to be a misunderstanding. They were introducing alternatives *to* the Datejust. They introduce the Rolex model first, then the alternatives.
I have two watches than looks almost like a Rolex submariner and a Rolex datejust the submariner alike is gold pleated and the datejust alike is in stainless steel the brand is max time at is like 99 percent cheaper than a Rolex obviusly isnt the same quality and beautiful as a true Rolex but they got the soul of the Rolex watches

Not to be negative, but the premise of this video is somewhat useless. People aren't buying a Rolex because they're stylish; they buy them because of the brand and status symbol.
If you want a Rolex, you're better off skipping these alternatives and just saving up for an actual (gently used) Rolex.
TL;DR There are no alternatives to status symbols.

I've got the tissot gentleman powermatic 80 silicium (in blue), not even remotely close to rolex caliber, but I'm sure it's style will stay priceless for my entire life.
That watch should be been mentioned as an alternative to the DJ instead of the alternative to the OP.
The timex is such a bad alternative to the datejust... owning a watch that is only a bad copy of another one looks cheap, if you can't get the rolex just buy something else but with its own personality, the hamilton, omega and grand seiko are all good choices (even though I prefer swiss watches, so I don't think I'd pick the grand seiko) and there are lots of other good swiss houses (my favourite is longines since it as a good quality and an accessible price). Also as a lover of vintage watches I prefer buying old swiss watches at a fraction of their price and then get them serviced, the older designs go perfectly well with classic menswear outfits and you'll have at your wrist something different from everyone else.

Agree on Orient. I have a Submariner that I love, but the my Orient Kamasu is also a great watch. I have a handful of different straps that make it fun and stylish.
Fed is always class! Nice video gentleman. I have been lucky enough to have owned a 2015 sub and a datejust from 1988. Both no longer with me as the money was needed for house. My Seiko will do just fine until I can move back into the luxury tier.

Right now probably the only Rolex that I'd buy might be the Rolex Submariner.....although that also has competition. Rolex is losing its "dope factor" or "cool factor" to me. It used to be a professional's watch. Now it tries to be aa rich man's watch but it will never get close to the "Holy Trinity" or Audemars Piquet, Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin.

Yes. If you want to wear a Rolex, you need to commit to the image. Wear tailored clothing, drive a nice car, live in a nice house, etc. People will see through you very quickly if you're "watch poor".
I'm personally very fond of a lot of low end Chinese watch brands, yes they are on the homage side, not copies or knockoffs, but at the same time Rolex doesn't own the rights these watch sizes and shapes.

My * "expensive" / collectable watch is my Luminox 3500. I bought it new, @ 1/2 price, as a "shelf model." That said, I've been a Seiko fan most of my life. but actually favor Timex.

The company's *reputation* was built entirely on marketing stunts and half-truths masquerading as innovation, and are the largest watchmaker by volume in Switzerland despite pricing and availability-because the demand for Rolex above all others is just that ludicrously high. They are possibly the finest example of successful marketing on the planet, and Apple is right up there with them.
Reputation is marketing. Marketing is reputation. They go hand-in-hand.
Except SOME Omegas, everything else is money wasted. Just save for that Rolex.

Rolex is an overrated brand, they are made for people that has money and knows nothing about watches. there are far better (in so many ways) options out there.
I love my invicta pro-diver 85 USD looks and works just like the Submariner but at 1,000th of the price.
I think you should include one between the 2nd & 3rd price ranges (~$1000 to $3000)
It's an awkward price range where not a lot of direct Rolex alternatives end up. Loads of other unique and interesting stuff, though, and much of it is German.
