    Wow, I had no idea Ricoh made watches. What an incredible discovery! I'm a huge fan of Ricoh's cameras having owned multiple Pentax models and now a Ricoh GR III. What an amazing company history.

      Absolutely, I had no idea either! I love Pentax, they trained us with K1000 at art school, so the brand connection means a little more to me too.
      Thank you Alex, excellent point.

      Ricoh have a substantial history of watch and watch movement manufacture after acquiring the business of "Takano" so I believe.

    Despite my many long nights spent perusing eBay’s seemingly limitless stocks of obscure vintage watches, I’ve never come across a Day Date homage that looks this good for this price. Lovely little piece.

    Congratulations for reaching 500k subscribers! I got into watches this year and you're one of the first youtubers who helped me whats the best watch to buy for the first time. I own a Casio a168 as my first watch and I fell in love with it! Now I got 4 watches, namely Casio, Seiko, Orient and a Citizen! Thanks and cheers!

    When I first saw the thumbnail, I had two possibilities in my head, either TGV's reviewing an Orient or an old Ricoh. I was 90% sure the Orient was it. But man, I would have never expected to see a Ricoh on this channel, I knew Ricoh watches from when I was starting to hunt for vintage watches. I could find them every once in a while here in Indonesia. They're all solid pieces that look great, with hand-winding movements and glass crystals. I saw a day-date model with an ice blue dial not too long ago.
    Anyway, thank you very much, TGV for sharing about this wonderful watch brand.
    Cheers, onwards and upwards!

    Great video as always TGV! I too love the look and elegance of a DateJust/Day-Date on a Jubilee/President bracelet. I bought a different affordable alternative, the Islander ISL-38, and I love it! It has many DateJust and SARB elements, but without being too close of a homage. Plus the quality/specs are great.

    So, Which DD Homage has the best Movement? Orient, Bulova or the Ricoh? Thanks

  • @Eeruby
    @Eeruby 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I have a DD homage recommendation: Mido Commander from the 80s-90s. I have the reference 8299-1 (I believe), high beat ETA 2834-2 movement; hacking, hand-winding, quick-set on day/date. Screw down crown, monocoque case, dimensions: 36mm x 10mm x 41mm LTL, 20mm lugs. It’s a cracker of a watch!

  • @muntaqamahi9749

    To be honest, Daydate is my most favourite styles of watches. I’ve recently bought a Cadisen Daydate 40 homage with green dial with Miyota 8285 movement. Costed me just over 100 dollars, has a sapphire crystal, hacking hand winding feature, runs pretty much 4-5 seconds slower. I’m okay with chinese manufactured watches. They are incredible value, extremely reliable and great for budget collectors

    Hola: I have been collecting watches since the 50´s, I own a Ricoh with that Seiko inspired 18 000 usual movement and it is still working after all these years even suffering harsh shocks and -20 C in my engineering profession in the 60´s. I live in Argentina very near Chile and that model was pretty usual in Buenos Aires and Patagonia. Those Ricoh 18 000 movt were used well inside the 70´s. I collaborate with the oldest jewelers in Patagonia and they still have many NOS. From Ricohs to Omegas. Mille grazie!!!

    Fantastic video! I agree with your stance on homages, particularly for especially rare or no longer produced watches. I think the fact that you are open to owning a homage while also owning the original speaks to the fact that watch snobbery is only a secondary characteristic of highly insecure individuals. Great work as always, onwards and upwards!

    Now that's good timing, just recently found an old ricoh camera from my parents, That lens is the only one that we have, and i've been using it with my new camera, I'm dipping my toes by now in both worlds and what is my surprise to discover not only that Ricoh makes watches, but also this stunning and affordable watch. The Mido commander day date, I think, is the best way to go. Great quality. Also, the Rado purple house is a great date just alternative

    • @luked2767
      @luked2767 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love midi and rado but I can't stand the new power matic 80 movements, they should give the customer a choice.

    • @daneconnelly
      @daneconnelly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@luked2767 I don't know too much about the powermatic 80 movements. People seem to love them, but that could be just for the power reserve. Would you rather have a stock 2824?

    • @luked2767
      @luked2767 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daneconnelly I would rather have the stock 2824 as its 28,800bph, the speed and beat error can be adjusted at home or by any local watchmaker, the microajustment screw for the speed is great.
      With the powermatic 80 to adjust the speed you have 2 wheel weights and it becomes a watchmakers job, much more costly and hard to get just right, the beat error is welded or something in place at the factory so if you need that adjusted you need to get a whole new movement.
      I like the idea of an upgraded 2824 with say a silicone or other better hairspring, better a balance made of better materials , more power reserve, a fix so when handwinding you don't get the rotor spin and such.
      (ironicaly the Chinese clones don't seem to suffer from it as much)
      But if I buy a modern Swiss auto I expect 28,800bph and the ability to get it regulated by a local watchmaker for cheap or a ajust it myself.
      I can understand the allure of 80 hours but I'm sure they could have made it 60 to 80 while keeping it 28,800bph.
      Many of the powermatic 80s don't even have a silicone hairspring so it's like buying a Japanese movement with more power reserve that you have to send to watch group to get adjusted and would probably cost a fortune.
      The 2824-2 and clones are one of the most popular movements that most watchmakers can rectify a problem with.
      Powermatic 80 not so much.
      If people want the 80 let them but I would take the standard 28,800boh 2824 any day over the 80 and the customer should be given the option.
      I also dislike powermatic 80 on the Dial as the Swiss matic was awful.
      It has now raised the price bar on the highstreet for people who want to buy a Swiss brand that has a 28,800bp movement.
      Nothing is wrong with the 21600boh beat rate its a good middle ground but not commonly used on Swiss watches its more of a Japanese speed.
      But they should at least give us the option.
      Some of the more popular swatch group watches that used the 2824 and are now powermatic 80 fetch a premium.
      The state of the market is so overpriced right now that I think the best Japanese brand for the money is Orient and I do prefer their movements over the entry seiko movements.
      Also Glycine aslo has some great sales and you could get a nice combat sub or airman with a stellita GMT movement.
      I've recently been finding myself buying more Chinese made watches with Japanese or Swiss movements, microbrsnds and vintage watches over most of the big name brands apart from orient as they are so overpriced.
      I just nodded a Steel dive Sd1970 and replaced the dial with a Vietnam era seiko dial and for the 60 pounds I paid for the watch that has 200m, sapphire with AR, a ceramic bezel and NH35 and 5 pounds for a replacement dial, its one of the best value watches.
      I bought enough vostok watches for under 25 pounds each to last a lifetime when the rouble sank to an all time low.
      This hobby is becoming more and more expensive for big brand name watches as prices are rising so fast, seiko 5s are crazy money now.

    Great review on one of my favorite Japanese watch brands! Ricoh watches were well known in some south-east Asia countries and it used to cooperate with a Taiwanese watch company called Telux to make watches with all parts provided by Ricoh. I've never seen an old Ricoh in such mint condition, it's a gem!!

  • @2mikelim

    the thing I love on this Ricoh daydate homage is the fluted bezel which is minutely so correctly angled as to give the real aura of the Rolex DD. Other Swiss (Bulova, Titoni etc) and Jap (Seiko, Citizen etc) homages fall short, even the top tier 4fig$ replicas! On them the bezel looks rough and garish bcos they didnt get the microscopic angles correct.

    Great video and nice watch. I agree with points on homages, although i also agree with people that complain in what's related to design (i.e. "picking the ideas of others" and swamping the market with near copies, something the best chinese brands still stubbornly do). The great point of homage is what is said in the video: someone don't have or don't want to spend in something and search an option with the same style instead, a pragmatic and realistic approach that cannot be condemned.

    Hi TGV, could you recommend an alternative to the Cartier de Santos? I'm trying to decide between the small, medium and large and would lke to find examples to see how they feel. Part of the problem is I don't live anywhere near a Cartier AD. Grazie mille!

    I remember the segment you are talking about. Some of the people that didn't. Even read the body of the article really blew their tops!

    I’ve seen that kind of date change in vintage omega constellations, where a pull on the brown flips the date instantly. Calibre 5xx if I recall correctly.

    That’s a stunning watch. I hadn’t heard of this brand so thanks for the introduction 👍

    Look at the Orient President! After watching this video a few months back, I started looking into Day/Dates and came across the Orient. It took a couple of months but I managed to acquire a very very fine example. Gold, with linen face and zirconia markers.

    Rolex? I thought they stopped selling watches and started selling display shelves. Another awesome video and awesome watch.

    I didn't know Richo made watches. The case and dial looks quite nice. Always enjoy learning the history of watch manufacturers.

    Congratulations on hitting half a million of subscribers, really an amazing achievement. Another alternative could be Orient president date or day/date, even they are pretty hard to get they are really nice and well made watches.

    YES! thank you for giving Ricoh some love! Recently I have been really into early 70s Ricoh quartz (Riquartz as they call them). I just got my third 570 caliber Riquartz today. The 570 is one of the most amazingly designed quartz movements I have seen, a true gem of the 70s. Would love to get my hands on a 550 their first quartz.
    Cheers TGV!

    Yet another awesome video! Congratulations on the 500k subs, TGV, you deserve it!
    Some suggestions for your next less-known / unusual brands and watches:
    1. Spaceman Audacieuse
    2. Rado Manhattan
    3. Smiths De Luxe (ideally ref A404) - the actual watch that was on the wrist of Sir Edmund Hillary during the first Everest ascent, it wasn't a Rolex...
    4. Sturmanskie Watch 1951, 15 jewels - the very first watch that went to space (on Yuri Gagarin's wrist during Vostok 1)
    5. JW Benson - I think you do not have a video on this old, English watchmaker - it would be fantastic to hear you talk about it

    Hey TGV! Like my gold 36mm women's invicta! Remember? haha! But mine doesn't have the date. There is something about this design that makes the watch amazingly comfortable to wear and great looking... no wonder it has been a success since ever! Same about homages here; discovered a good resource by checking on invicta but ladies size models, they look on my wrist like a normal good looking watch for great prices and pretty acceptable quality. Have you ever seen a chinese brand named forshining? Took my chances and bought an AP skeleton homage and the watch is surprisingly good, you should look into that as not sure if it was pure luck or that is actually their standard. AMAZING how you got to make this video, your research and presentation. You make me feel like I am with good friend, watching and listening to you talking about our passion in cumun. You really make the love for watches pure and real!

    As a Ricoh watch owner (I have several) can't believe TGV finally made a video featuring one, I was even tempted to send TGV a few for him to try out. Anyway one of the most interesting things about the company is how narrowly Seiko defeated them on presenting the first Quartz (Ricoh branded Riquartz).
    Curretly daily-use caliber 61, really tough and depandable watch. By the way love that Rolex homage.
