    In the early 60's my mother began drinking a soda called Patio, that had saccharin in it. She loved the stuff and even put saccharin in her coffee instead of sugar. She began to develop red sores all over her body including her face. Doctor told her it was the saccharin and to stop use. She did and it went away. Then that cola called Patio was changed to Diet Pepsi, and switched from saccharin to aspertame. When they did that mom went back to it. She liked it a lot and awhile later she developed kidney stones, stating that giving birth to me was less painful. She stopped drinking it and no more kidney stones. Good grief. Because of it I never drank diet sodas, and wouldn't let my kids drink them either.

    The science seems to be solid but I can never tell if a source is unbiased or not. On one hand you have big money from the manufacturers of artificial sweeteners and then on the other hand you have health gurus that don't have a vested interest but are usually using pseudoscience in their arguments.

    I am a diabetic with a sweet tooth; a bad combination indeed. Since I can't have sugar anymore, I initially switched to Stevia. However I never liked the taste of Stevia and even after using it for a long time I simply couldn't develop a taste for it. Then about ten months back I decided to try Aspertame instead. And it turned out to be the best substitute for Sugar amongst all Sugar substitutes avaliable. So I happily switched to Aspartame in no time. The thing is I am ending up consuming lot of Aspertame now; a lot more than any doctor would recommend or even allow me to have. Yet luckily there is no sign of Aspertame causing any of the symptoms mentioned in the video so far.... but I am worried and hope all that daily dose of Aspertame is not having severe ill effects on my health without my noticing it. It is not the shortening of natural life span which bothers me so much (honestly not at all) instead it is the horrible things that happen to diabetics while they're alive (co-morbidity resulting in organ failures leading to blindness, amputation of limbs, dependence on dialysis _et al_ ).

    I couldn’t believe chewing gum could be a nearly fatal, habit, until it happened to me! I had developed a habit of chewing two or three pieces of Wrigley’s orbit gum and getting a change of gum at least 4 to 5 times daily. As an RN I was completely disabled and spent a year in living hell with anxiety so severe I was suicidal! I was so restless I wanted to crawl out of my skin. I couldn’t even sit back in my chair I had to rock incessantly. I slept for 1 to 2 hours then woke up and was awake for up to two hours and then got another 1 to 2 hours of sleep. In total I was only getting 4 to 6 hours of sleep nightly for an entire year! I was sleeping 8 to 10 hours nightly prior to changing from natural gums to the cheaper Wrigley‘s brand gum! I couldn’t focus on anything and spent four hours trying to watch a half hour program because I couldn’t absorb what was being said! My vision was blurry and I went to multiple doctors, but nothing they gave me was providing relief! After not finding any relief and being so disabled I began to read about aspartame and the first reports I read all said it was safe so I didn’t give it a second thought. Thank God six months later when I was on the verge of killing myself because I couldn’t tolerate living in such torment I decided to dig deeper and discovered aspartame can be toxic! I immediately stopped chewing gum which was really my favorite and only vice in life! Guess what? Yes, within one day I was back in my right mind! I am livid over how can they put something like this in our food without giving us blaring warnings about how toxic it is - especially for certain people who are more sensitive to it.
    Our body chemistry changes every seven years so you can tolerate a certain food or medicine all your life and then suddenly develop allergies or sensitivities! Don’t sit smugly thinking, oh this could never happen to me, because I can testify that you never know and doctors are not trained to look for this type of toxicity! I wonder how many children with mental issues just need to get off of the aspartame! If it could do what it did to me, the fact that it silently causes cancer’s and other neurological conditions without being identified until the damage is done is easy to understand! We are like lambs to the slaughter trusting in companies motivated to cheaply process and sell us their goods!

      jonah Biedermann thank you for asking, that’s a very relevant question. Yes, I saw four different specialists in my desperation to find relief! All the common medical conditions (and medications) that can induce akathisia were ruled out. The horror ended A year and four months later, just as abruptly as it had began very shortly after getting the aspartame gum out of my diet. Believe me if I’d known aspartame could cause the akathisia, I would’ve ended it much sooner! Without exaggeration, it’s a miracle I survived the entire experience without caving into the nearly irresistible, suicidal drive it induces!

Something you may not have seen, however, was the voting makeup of the approval of the chemical. I believe it still holds the title of the most contested decision made by the FDA to date.
    In regards to there being little evidence of serious side effects in the general public it is important to remember the saying “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.” Unfortunately there has not actually been any thorough research into this chemicals effects so we do not know if there is a risk to public health.

      @@winooi5012 You can do it, I did it. Water is about all I drink, and also decaf coffee with nothing added, and decaf tea with nothing added. You have to get that sweet taste off of your tongue, and that's the trick. Bread, pizza, hamburgers, shakes, cokes, and anything sweet that will leave you wanting more and more and more, it's never ending. If you eat veggies, but not fruit because fruit is sweet and will leave a sweet taste on your tongue, and eat whole meats like beef, chicken, tuna, hamburger, pork, and fish, but no deli because again they put sugar in a lot of deli, and potato salad, and most restaurants make their foods with sweet additives that will leave that sweet taste in your mouth, and that will leave you addicted to sugar, and a slave to sugar addiction, and you will never be healthy because of so much junk food and empty calories you are eating. You must eat whole foods that carry nutrition to your whole body, and that will leave you satisfied, empty calories will not. I eat from 12pm - 6pm everyday twice within that time period. I eat eggs, soups, and salad with nothing but whole foods, and after I get through eating, I'm not hungry for at least 18 to 20 hours because my body has the stuff that it needs. No more sugar cravings either. Good luck, I've lost 80 pounds so far, and I believe that this is something that I can stick with. At first you want all the crap you have been eating all of your life, but after about 3 months or so, you start beginning to love veggies, meats, eggs, and you won't want cakes, chips, candy, and cookies anymore. Good luck! :) It's doable!

      It very well might be people who are already overeating and consuming surplus calories but then think throwing in a diet soda is helping them cut down the calories. But the 0 calories is moot because they've already gone over their caloric limit through just food alone.

    • @NexusNine

      That's likely because he hasn't done a thing to change the rest of his diet. Drinking diet sodas isn't going to do a thing if you're packing down a Big Mac and large fries. In other words, diet soda isn't going to cause you to gain weight, but it isn't going to cause your to lose weight either if you're still packing in a ton of carbs or calories. What does this guy's diet look like?

    Aspartame is a poison..nowhere on youtube can you find out eho invented it or what it was originally invented for..look up agent orange and what it was used for during the vietnam war and what happened to the soldiers eho were spraying it around...nothing on this earth with the exception of nuclear waste can cause cancer as fast as aspartame does....stay well away from it.

    • @Chair991
      @Chair991 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It took me 2 seconds of googling to find out who discovered and invented it. It was discovered by chemist James M. Schlatter by accident that aspartame tasted sweet. Agent orange has absolutely nothing in common aspartame. The fact you tried to use youtube as google is also astounding. People like you that spread complete misinformation are dangerous to society.

      Which "guy". The person who made this video is sticking with pretty solid science: it has never been shown that aspartame is harmful in reasonable doses (and remember: for most chemicals its the dose that makes the poison: our bodies are able to handle small amounts of many harmful substances without any harm at all), in a well-designed, peer-reviewed scientific study - except to a very small percentages of the general population. The presenter agrees with this, and sets forth a good defense of aspartame.
