It zooms in so you can do the speechcraft minigame plus observe NPC disposition which changes based on your stats, race, actions, guild membership, etc. (unlike all the completely emotionally dead autistic loserfield NPCS) -- and at the time the facial animations were revolutionary. Nothing remotely revolutionary about loserfield, except for all the non-binary NPCs you can't kill 😆. Also Oblivion had Radiant AI which is the most advanced NPC behavior programming they've ever featured in a Bethesda game. The Oblivion AI, animations, and NPCS are the reason Wilburgur has a channel making funny oblivion content with almost 1 million subs currently. But ok bro I'm sure Loserfield is better than Oblivion cause reasons.

Look, it's fine if you want characters in a game to look like you. That's why it's cool when games allow for character customization or creation, that way everyone can get what they want. And without a truly effective marketing campaign, I doubt the game would generate enough revenue to justify the time invested in making it.

Gaming died with Day 1 patches and microtransactions, lootboxes, battlepasses and other BS is just a further evolution alongside the stagnation of creativity that have permeated the industry the last 15 or so years.
It's been dying for a longer time than that. This is just another nail in the coffin. Engagement mechanics over fun, moneygrubbing, movietime games... all of it has taken away space needed for interesting mechanics, emergent gameplay and giving us, the players, the ability to make our own thrilling stories.

I played the original Avatar game, it was fucking mint, you could drive and fly every vehicle in one mission or another that we saw in the movies, and the same for the navi, flying the dragons and the likes, it was so much fun. The RDA (Human) route had your avatar die, and you continue fighting for the humans, eventually resulting in you being able to use the Dragon Gunship (the giant green one from the movie) like in the final battle of the movie, in the final mission/area of the game. It was semi open world and the player, for the time, honestly had a good bit of freedom. Plus it had a strategic world map for you to conquer, you could build units, invade other sectors with them, capturing key sectors which had specialisations etc. Amazing game.

I would say that the problem is in metaphysical sanatism - aka a subversion of everything. Games are made for people who pathologically hate games, movies are made for people who don't watch movies, and the list goes on and on. But I will not idealize old games and demonize new ones. There are objective facts. If video games were in shape and in check, then developers would not rely on old titles and gameplay recipes from a decade ago. "Normies" are kind of different topics. They are illegible because their brain is very tired after working in the office or in the factory. IMO - the main problem lies in the ideology, which is destructive and subversive. And people likes to predend that this is not the case. But it's true.
And I will say that I was not an optimist before. When I went through Vegas 13 years ago, I thought "Well, that's it. I'll have to wait ten years to see a game at the same level of story development, choices, etc." Guess what? Even more years have passed and there is still no game that even comes close to the bar set by Vegas... Although I can't call it high, Vegas was flawed, although many people like to pretend that it is not. The only thing that other developers have learned is lesbian characters and followers. Now they are in every game. And the "centrists" tried to convince me that it seemed to me and I'm "reactionary" or something. Don't believe their lies, they are trying to demoralize you.

I just saw the face model for Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West. I never knew the disparity in her appearance compared to Aloy was that significant. I swear... Tanya Clarke who plays Nicole is 50 and looks young, beautiful, and vibrant compared to her video game counterpart who is supposedly 40 and looks like someone's grandmother. Just about every time I stumble across a photo of a mo-cap actress / Voice Actress/Face Model for a female character, the flesh-and-blood person is much more attractive than their video game counterpart. And on that note... I can't stand Peter Parker's new PS5 face model. He looks 16 now. Nowhere near his mid to late 20's. And the damn light doesn't even bounce off of this "visual upgrade to better compensate facial capture." The difference in visuals and emotion between the PS4 and PS5 May's bedside scene is atrocious. So... male characters are remade to look younger and more attractive... and female characters are made to look older and uglier. That's how it is now, eh? FFS. And all to appease people on Twitter who don't play games and openly mock and antagonize the gaming community. I couldn't even finish HFW. I'm the type who likes to complete most or all side missions before the final showdown. The incessant "down with the patriarchy, girl power, men destroy everything and are inherently evil and menacing, women will fix everything and are inherently good and benevolent saviors," etc, etc that was the not so subtle subliminal messaging in every damn side mission... which was enough to make me quit before finishing. FFS. Almost every male character was either evil, criminal, predatory, brazenly misogynistic, etc. And for the off chance a male character was good and not a pathetic, effeminate coward, they were usually non-white and clearly outshined by their female counterparts, whether it be physically, intellectually, courageously, maturity, etc. Or they were just an oafish drunk. And the female NPCs were always "being held back by their male counterparts," and if the stubborn sexist men would just step aside, they could finally show just how much better they were as warriors than those damned misogynistic men who are always holding them back. Or they simply easily outshined their male NPC counterparts and were the ones to survive battles. Naturally... I'm no stranger to suspending my disbelief to enjoy media. I've been watching women kick ass since Ripley and Connor. I've been playing as men, women, robots, dragons, and Lombaxes since as far back as I can remember. Even as a former service member, I couldn't care less that the Guerrilla Devs want to push the agenda that women are just as capable warriors as men... but the clear emphasis on the female soldiers in this game and their sheer abundance... combined with the never ending anti-men/subliminal feminist messaging in every bit of dialogue... is what wrecked all suspension of disbelief and enjoyment. I'm here to grapple-gun-launch myself into their air and fire explosive arrows at robot wooly mammoths that fire lazers... and without any care that the MC is female... I'm NOT here to be lectured about how I'm inherently evil for having XY chromosomes. And the funny thing is... it's not even Aloy who's insufferable. It's almost everyone and everything around her that pushes the woke feminist messaging in some form or another. Now that I think about it... when I quit, it was right around when "The Enduring" turned out to be a tiny, frail elderly woman... who apparently beat 6 or more men 3 times her size and half her age... THAT was when I bowed out. Not simply because "The Enduring" was a woman, but because I recalled just how much those male NPCs were singing praises about "The Enduring" and Aloy after losing to her. Their simpish dialogue perfectly exemplified the developers who made the game... and their brazen pandering to the woke/feminist crowd. No. Wait. I think I quit when I had to help that elderly women and her granddaughter near the mountain base reconnect with the man she met once as a young woman... aka... not her husband. So... I was basically a flower delivery service for a woman reminiscing about the man who alpha-widowed her. And the granddaughter was on board with it all. There was no "but gram... what about grand-dad? Didn't you love him?" ...smh... There were a few trans-allegory missions or NPCs, but there was one that pissed me off. The guy found out his previous lover might be alive and held prisoner by enemy forces. And for having the audacity for seeing for himself and attempting to rescue her from imprisonment and torture... he's demonized for doing so by both his current new flame when they're barely even an item yet... and by the previous lover. The previous lover who not only joined the enemy faction... but in doing so, reinvented herself with a new identity, both in name and appearance (remember... trans allegory...) because apparently society back at home was an oppressive and stifling patriarchy that held her back... 😩... and she apatheticly shrugs off the guy as if his feelings and motivations were of no consequence and of absolutely no significance to her... even when it was made clear that it was he who was fair to her and treated her like an equal more than any other. At least they got the "my happiness matters more than anything" feminist mindset right. The dude is grieving for the loss of a person who in essence doesn't exist anymore despite being alive, someone he navigated through hostile enemy territory to rescue... and yet he's the villain somehow... because MeN bAd... and how dare he "cheat" on his current not-girlfriend to do so... FFS... Guerilla Games went way too hard in the paint this time with the "girl power, down with the patriarchy" political agenda crap they're shoving into their games on the back end. Sometimes so hard, they accidentally showcase some of the bs that transpires within the feminist way of thinking and its sometimes blatant misandry. You don't notice it in the main campaign, but as you progress through every side mission, you notice a pattern. And it adds up.

I was honestly expecting Avowed to be cancelled or forever stuck in development hell, considering that the game apparently went through 3 reboots and has been bleeding staff for years. Reminds me of Andromeda in that regard. It's a shame too, since Avowed is suppose to be in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity games, which I'm a fan of. In fact, we could have gotten a Pillars 3, but Obsidian seems to want to compete with Bethesda instead. Sawyer is also not involved which is another red flag. For all his faults, Pillars was his brain-child so him not being involved only further cements my apathy towards Avowed. Deadfire might have truly been Obsidian's last good game.
Casual consumers don't realise that the turnover for developers is very high, so they see a company they liked in the past is making something else and assume the same people are working on it. Naughty Dog is a good example, as is Arkane.

It zooms in so you can do the speechcraft minigame plus observe NPC disposition which changes based on your stats, race, actions, guild membership, etc. (unlike all the completely emotionally dead autistic loserfield NPCS) -- and at the time the facial animations were revolutionary. Nothing remotely revolutionary about loserfield, except for all the non-binary NPCs you can't kill 😆. Also Oblivion had Radiant AI which is the most advanced NPC behavior programming they've ever featured in a Bethesda game. The Oblivion AI, animations, and NPCS are the reason Wilburgur has a channel making funny oblivion content with almost 1 million subs currently. But ok bro I'm sure Loserfield is better than Oblivion cause reasons.

I didn't care for the speech craft minigame in Oblivion personally. And dislike how Starfield zooms into static characters, doing nothing, facing you, during conversations. I don't like it in Oblivion either, but I can let it slide for Oblivion due to the time it was made. And like you say, there was a minigame attached to reactions.
But yeah, the RadiantAI is cool. I miss every NPC having a reason to exist and going about their daily cycle. I never said Starfield was revolutionary. Nor was it good. I think it looks like shit. And the game is mediocre. But I do think it's technically on a far higher level than Oblivion in facial animation. For sure with the main characters which have most likely had actual humans touch up and fix. Oblivion also had even worst faces in general. I can forgive it for that though. But not Starfield. The big issue with Persona 3 is that the remake will almost always have a neutered version of the translation. Even if you play with Japanese voices, you're still subjected to the localization. Any "problematic" lines in the Japanese script or the original translation will be censored.

They can’t have it be some muscular 6’ 2” guy or anything like that fill the role anymore. Look, it's fine if you want characters in a game to look like you. That's why it's cool when games allow for character customization or creation, that way everyone can get what they want. It's been dying for a longer time than that. This is just another nail in the coffin. Engagement mechanics over fun, moneygrubbing, movietime games... all of it has taken away space needed for interesting mechanics, emergent gameplay and giving us, the players, the ability to make our own thrilling stories.

I played the original Avatar game, it was fucking mint, you could drive and fly every vehicle in one mission or another that we saw in the movies, and the same for the navi, flying the dragons and the likes, it was so much fun. The RDA (Human) route had your avatar die, and you continue fighting for the humans, eventually resulting in you being able to use the Dragon Gunship (the giant green one from the movie) like in the final battle of the movie, in the final mission/area of the game. It was semi open world and the player, for the time, honestly had a good bit of freedom. Plus it had a strategic world map for you to conquer, you could build units, invade other sectors with them, capturing key sectors which had specialisations etc.

I would say that the problem is in metaphysical sanatism - aka a subversion of everything. Games are made for people who pathologically hate games, movies are made for people who don't watch movies, and the list goes on and on.
But I will not idealize old games and demonize new ones. There are objective facts. If video games were in shape and in check, then developers would not rely on old titles and gameplay recipes from a decade ago. "Normies" are kind of different topics. They are illegible because their brain is very tired after working in the office or in the factory.
IMO - the main problem lies in the ideology, which is destructive and subversive. And people likes to predend that this is not the case. But it's true.
And I will say that I was not an optimist before. When I went through Vegas 13 years ago, I thought "Well, that's it. I'll have to wait ten years to see a game at the same level of story development, choices, etc." Guess what? Even more years have passed and there is still no game that even comes close to the bar set by Vegas... Although I can't call it high, Vegas was flawed, although many people like to pretend that it is not.
The only thing that other developers have learned is lesbian characters and followers. Now they are in every game. And the "centrists" tried to convince me that it seemed to me and I'm "reactionary" or something. Don't believe their lies, they are trying to demoralize you.

I just saw the face model for Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West. I never knew the disparity in her appearance compared to Aloy was that significant. Between her and the face model / VA for Nicole in the Dead Space "Remake," it's clear now that western developers only care about appeasing the almighty Anita Sarkeesian by uglifying all female characters.
I swear... Tanya Clarke who plays Nicole is 50 and looks young, beautiful, and vibrant compared to her video game counterpart who is supposedly 40 and looks like someone's grandmother.
Just about every time I stumble across a photo of a mo-cap actress / Voice Actress/Face Model for a female character, the flesh-and-blood person is much more attractive than their video game counterpart.
And on that note... I can't stand Peter Parker's new PS5 face model. He looks 16 now. Nowhere near his mid to late 20's. And the damn light doesn't even bounce off of this "visual upgrade to better compensate facial capture." The difference in visuals and emotion between the PS4 and PS5 May's bedside scene is atrocious.
So... male characters are remade to look younger and more attractive... and female characters are made to look older and uglier.

I couldn't even finish HFW. I'm the type who likes to complete most or all side missions before the final showdown. The incessant "down with the patriarchy, girl power, men destroy everything and are inherently evil and menacing, women will fix everything and are inherently good and benevolent saviors," etc, etc that was the not so subtle subliminal messaging in every damn side mission... which was enough to make me quit before finishing.
FFS. Almost every male character was either evil, criminal, predatory, brazenly misogynistic, etc. And for the off chance a male character was good and not a pathetic, effeminate coward, they were usually non-white and clearly outshined by their female counterparts, whether it be physically, intellectually, courageously, maturity, etc. Or they were just an oafish drunk.
And the female NPCs were always "being held back by their male counterparts," and if the stubborn sexist men would just step aside, they could finally show just how much better they were as warriors than those damned misogynistic men who are always holding them back. Or they simply easily outshined their male NPC counterparts and were the ones to survive battles. Naturally...
I'm no stranger to suspending my disbelief to enjoy media. I've been watching women kick ass since Ripley and Connor. I've been playing as men, women, robots, dragons, and Lombaxes since as far back as I can remember. Even as a former service member, I couldn't care less that the Guerrilla Devs want to push the agenda that women are just as capable warriors as men... but the clear emphasis on the female soldiers in this game and their sheer abundance... combined with the never ending anti-men/subliminal feminist messaging in every bit of dialogue... is what wrecked all suspension of disbelief and enjoyment.
I'm here to grapple-gun-launch myself into their air and fire explosive arrows at robot wooly mammoths that fire lazers... and without any care that the MC is female... I'm NOT here to be lectured about how I'm inherently evil for having XY chromosomes.
And the funny thing is... it's not even Aloy who's insufferable. It's almost everyone and everything around her that pushes the woke feminist messaging in some form or another.
Now that I think about it... when I quit, it was right around when "The Enduring" turned out to be a tiny, frail elderly woman... who apparently beat 6 or more men 3 times her size and half her age... THAT was when I bowed out. Not simply because "The Enduring" was a woman, but because I recalled just how much those male NPCs were singing praises about "The Enduring" and Aloy after losing to her. Their simpish dialogue perfectly exemplified the developers who made the game... and their brazen pandering to the woke/feminist crowd.
No. Wait. I think I quit when I had to help that elderly women and her granddaughter near the mountain base reconnect with the man she met once as a young woman... aka... not her husband. So... I was basically a flower delivery service for a woman reminiscing about the man who alpha-widowed her. And the granddaughter was on board with it all. There was no "but gram... what about grand-dad? Didn't you love him?" ...smh...
There were a few trans-allegory missions or NPCs, but there was one that pissed me off. The guy found out his previous lover might be alive and held prisoner by enemy forces. And for having the audacity for seeing for himself and attempting to rescue her from imprisonment and torture... he's demonized for doing so by both his current new flame when they're barely even an item yet... and by the previous lover. The previous lover who not only joined the enemy faction... but in doing so, reinvented herself with a new identity, both in name and appearance (remember... trans allegory...) because apparently society back at home was an oppressive and stifling patriarchy that held her back... 😩... and she apatheticly shrugs off the guy as if his feelings and motivations were of no consequence and of absolutely no significance to her... even when it was made clear that it was he who was fair to her and treated her like an equal more than any other. At least they got the "my happiness matters more than anything" feminist mindset right. The dude is grieving for the loss of a person who in essence doesn't exist anymore despite being alive, someone he navigated through hostile enemy territory to rescue... and yet he's the villain somehow... because MeN bAd... and how dare he "cheat" on his current not-girlfriend to do so...

Gaming has been dead for at least the last five or six years. When companies aren't shitting out broken lines of code that can barely even run, they're putting out sequels and remakes that nobody wants or even asks for. I haven't been excited for a new game release in a long long time.

I was honestly expecting Avowed to be cancelled or forever stuck in development hell, considering that the game apparently went through 3 reboots and has been bleeding staff for years. Reminds me of Andromeda in that regard. It's a shame too, since Avowed is suppose to be in the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity games, which I'm a fan of. In fact, we could have gotten a Pillars 3, but Obsidian seems to want to compete with Bethesda instead. Sawyer is also not involved which is another red flag. For all his faults, Pillars was his brain-child so him not being involved only further cements my apathy towards Avowed. Deadfire might have truly been Obsidian's last good game.
