The shows don't really feel like they're showcasing games for consumers, but rather showcasing projects and studio prestige to shareholders and/or potential investors. Studios and publishers can point to their presence in these big flashy shows and say to shareholders or investors, "Hey, we're doing important things that are getting noticed". This would actually go a long way in explaining why 85% of the games shown featured "diversity" heavily in their material. Not only are devs/publishers looking to pull into dollars from higher ESG (or other similar investment advisory schemes) scores, but they're also looking to qualify for the myriad of grants and subsidies available from both public and private entities for meeting their intersectional quotes.

Here's my theory: They're trying to build a female audience by catering to them through gaming and film because the likelihood of WWIII breaking out over the Taiwan Strait is growing by the day. What really sucks about the Perfect Dark reboot is that everyone’s going to focus on the horrible redesign for Dark herself, and not mention how it looks and plays nothing like Perfect Dark. That's always been the case. Look at a game like HALO, absolute dogshit. Can only carry 2 weapons, difficulty comes from bullet sponge enemies, maps are dogshit - and the franchise has sold over 81m copies of it's dogshit games for mouth breathers.
Corporate is too involved given how costly they make them. They also hired nobodies for ESG reasons, and bloat budgets further. But besides all that being hindrances, I think it’s also because teams are way too big. You can’t have camaraderie between 300 employees plus contractors. And even then it’s just siloed in their department. You’re not really gonna have the artists talking with programmers and level designers so there’s actual collaboration. Plus, the most experienced are older, with families, and aren’t interested (or concerned about supporting their families) to fight back. And the people under them are all narcissist, talentless hacks corporate is bringing in. Whether those experienced want it or not.
It's the whole thing, how many bosses and higher ups do you think actually play games anymore? For all his many many faults, guys like Todd Howard were basically gamers who were excited to play the games they make, this is a dying breed. You can tell too, When gamers do latch onto on some dev (arguably people like Miyazaki or Vicke nowadays for eg) these guys will be legit gamers, which is why their games are usually better than the rest.
On your point about right-leaning folks getting into game development, a lot of us are trying. But the problem is if we don't toe the line and play by the rules, then we get boxed out of the industry. I'm working on getting into game development as a writer, since that's what my background is. But even in the creative writing space, the cancer that is DEI has wormed its way throughout. I recently turned down a publishing deal because part of their review process was an 'equity' check, and the specific example they used was "to make sure words like 'white' aren't capitalized". Pulled out of there real quick because I refuse to have someone tell me what can and can't go into a story. It's the sole reason I'm an indie author. And why I'll probably never be more than a writer for indie games in the future. At least until people finally get fed up, Black Rock gets Tyler Durden'd, and the pendulum swings back to normalcy.

It was certifiably dead by the time Crystal Dynamics came on. Not even specifically calling out their work, but this was supposed to be a new studio from the ground up, and notable leads. They all left. If your debut studio needs a literal 2nd studio to come in and “help” (make the thing), it’s over. You might as well just fully outsource it. But I imagine that didn’t happen because CD was likely already well into the next Tomb Raider. This game was announced 6 years ago and will likely need another 2-3 (4-5 years since CD came in to reboot it) since they didn’t even show a release _year_ (even some other ones said 2025). By the time it actually releases, it will nearly have a 10 year anniversary. That’s pathetic, lol.

Steam mods pulled the game because the dev said a few things that go against "current thing" on the games dev notes when he'd make dev logs or in the discussion page after a game update pointing out the hypocrisy of Steam allowing devs to advocate for any "current thing" to use steam as a political echo chamber, but you were never allowed to not support a trending narrative. DOMINA is not the only game to be pulled from steam either, there are many others typically from small indie devs who said things that were not in support of "Current Thing."

We're in the middle of a gaming crash and have been for a few years. Hell, compare the amount of non-indie game releases now to a decade ago. Corporate is too involved given how costly they make them. They also hired nobodies for ESG reasons, and bloat budgets further. But besides all that being hindrances, I think it’s also because teams are way too big. You can’t have camaraderie between 300 employees plus contractors. And even then it’s just siloed in their department. You’re not really gonna have the artists talking with programmers and level designers so there’s actual collaboration. Plus, the most experienced are older, with families, and aren’t interested (or concerned about supporting their families) to fight back. And the people under them are all narcissist, talentless hacks corporate is bringing in. Whether those experienced want it or not.
It's the whole thing, how many bosses and higher ups do you think actually play games anymore? For all his many many faults, guys like Todd Howard were basically gamers who were excited to play the games they make, this is a dying breed. You can tell too, When gamers do latch onto on some dev (arguably people like Miyazaki or Vicke nowadays for eg) these guys will be legit gamers, which is why their games are usually better than the rest.

But the problem is if we don't toe the line and play by the rules, then we get boxed out of the industry. I'm working on getting into game development as a writer, since that's what my background is. But even in the creative writing space, the cancer that is DEI has wormed its way throughout.
I recently turned down a publishing deal because part of their review process was an 'equity' check, and the specific example they used was "to make sure words like 'white' aren't capitalized". Pulled out of there real quick because I refuse to have someone tell me what can and can't go into a story. It's the sole reason I'm an indie author. And why I'll probably never be more than a writer for indie games in the future. At least until people finally get fed up, Black Rock gets Tyler Durden'd, and the pendulum swings back to normalcy.

It was certifiably dead by the time Crystal Dynamics came on. Not even specifically calling out their work, but this was supposed to be a new studio from the ground up, and notable leads. They all left. If your debut studio needs a literal 2nd studio to come in and “help” (make the thing), it’s over. You might as well just fully outsource it. But I imagine that didn’t happen because CD was likely already well into the next Tomb Raider. This game was announced 6 years ago and will likely need another 2-3 (4-5 years since CD came in to reboot it) since they didn’t even show a release _year_ (even some other ones said 2025). By the time it actually releases, it will nearly have a 10 year anniversary. That’s pathetic, lol.

DOMINA is not the only game to be pulled from steam either, there are many others typically from small indie devs who said things that were not in support of "Current Thing."

Apathy is all I feel for the gaming industry right now. Im just sticking to playing old games I havent played or my favorite indie game. I gave up modern gaming years ago. I hope another video game crash happens, but with all these "gamers" buying this goyslop, I doubt it.

We're in the middle of a gaming crash and have been for a few years. Hell, compare the amount of non-indie game releases now to a decade ago. Unfortunately it's all being propped up by live service whales and brainlets who buy the latest slop without question.
