Welcome to Arbat Street, in the heart of Moscow. Arbat Street has existed since the 15th century, which makes it one of the oldest streets of the Russian capital. Previously regarded as one of the most prestigious locations to live in Moscow, it is now heavy on tourism, souvenir shops, bars and restaurants.
So, come with me and have a look around. Decide for yourself if Arbat is still the go to destination for Muscovites or is it a must see location for tourists visiting this great city.

Hi James, my name is Igor. We live in Arbat or rather Arbat-Khamovniki closer to Kropotkinskaya metro and Christ the Saviour Cathedral at one of the lanes flowing from Arbat south. The southern border of Arbat community is Sivtsev Vrazhek street; further south is Khamovniki area. My side street is called Bolshoi Afanasievsky pereulok, it's very long. Our House is #5.
Arbat was prestigious in the old days. Now there are many much more attractive places in Moscow
Highly recommend you to walk along Ostozhenka street, from the Gardden ring side to the center
You have not shown one of the main attractions of Arbat Street - the Tsoi Wall. Victor Tsoi is the leader of the rock band KINO, very popular in the 80s. He died in 1990 and fans began to paint walls all over the country with the words "Tsoi is forever alive!" The main place of Victor Tsoi's memory is located in Moscow - his wall. Show it sometime. There you can sometimes meet fans singing Tsoi's songs.
Is always nice to see a clean city without people annoying others, graffiti, homeless people, drug addicts or rainbow propaganda. Moscow is a beautiful city.
Can’t people watch a video and make a nice comment without saying something negative (and overstated) about another city? I’ve come to expect this very comment on every single Russian video. If you are so cultured, come up with something better to say than this tired statement. I will throw out there, too, that the way to build relationships across cultures is not to tear one down.
Moscow, and many Russian cities really stand out and are far superior to other Western cities. It is really a sign of the West's degeneracy, cultural decay and fundamental political and economic problems, which are being normalised, which makes it even worse. Some people have a problem with honesty, but we have had enough of censorship and PC. Videos like this and people travelling are making people more aware of what is true and possible, cutting through the propaganda and narratives that control people's minds. The West would do well to learn from Russia.

Most of it is clean Wayne. My wife's hometown on the whole is clean as well. The majority of Russian people still have pride in their areas. Family, friends and community are very important. I am moving there very soon to be with my wife and for these reasons.
Every city in Russia has clean streets, no homeless people or drug addicts. I live in Krasnoyarsk, a city in Siberia with a population of 1.2 million people. It is just as clean; there are many videos from Krasnoyarsk on TH-cam.

I am a Muscovite. My personal opinion: Arbat is more a place for tourists who are brought in by bus. There they buy a souvenir and are given excursions. My friends and I sometimes go for a walk along Arbat, but I don’t feel very comfortable there.
If I just want to walk with someone and talk calmly, then I’d rather choose a park or a quiet area.
Moscow is big, there are many interesting places, far from the main streets. It will take many years to walk around the entire city. Therefore, I see no point in coming to Arbat often.

Greetings from Crimea. Just an interesting fact. I served in the Ukrainian army before 2010, before the Nazis seized power in Kiev. In my unit there was a guy from the Donetsk Region. He said that he was a Scotsman named Bryabin. Obviously, he did not know the Scottish language and was a typical Russian guy from Donbass. But he remembered that his ancestor came from Scotland to the Russian Empire in the 19th century.

How clean the streets are! Amazing!
I never saw as much as a cigarette end on the ground in Moscow or St. Petersburg. It really is a spotless place, the bullet train, Sapsan, is more comfortable and cleaner than any train or plane I've ever been on. The underground is the same - spotless. I love what little I've seen of Russia.

The dome is a hallmark of Byzantine architecture that was borrowed by Russians in the 10th century, since then the Western architecture landmarks the Western landscape with Roman-type prolonged basilicas, whereas the cross-domed church landmarks the Russian terrain and comes from the Panteon-type structures.

G’day Scottish Guy, I’ve lived in Arbat since 2020 - definitely a tourist walk. Lots of locals visit during spring and summer. In few weeks it will be shoulder to shoulder of people walking along the street. Cheers from an expat Australian.

2:21 Regarding those hats. They are called 'ushanka' which comes from the Russian word 'oóshee' - which is plural for 'ear'. Those side pieces can be untied on top and then they cover your ears. It is similar to many fur hunting caps from all over the world and this is exactly where it originates from. In the middle ages Russia has been one of the biggest fur producers and exporters and it never really stopped.
You can still see people wearing those hats because they are still a part of the standart winter issue of some uniforms like military, cadets or police.

Varenichnaya restaurant is good. If you'd like to go further on the way of pelmeny's type of food ;)) you could try hinkali. There was a restaurant Hinkalnaya in your video. That's a Georgian food, very tasty and popular among Russians. It looks like a big pelmen with a short tail, full of mince and broth.
The portrait on the side of the building, as someone faster than me has already said, is of Marshall Zhukov. Even a hick like me from Australia knows that. Well, a well-read hick. :)

Maybe the Scotsman does not understand why there are 5 domes, but the shape of the domes. In my opinion, the shape of the dome symbolizes the ancient Russian helmet, first of all, fighting for the Orthodox faith..😇

Old Arbat is most famous pedestrial street in Moscow. From the point of living its definitely a not good place, but property here is horribly expensive and continue to grow, so its good from the point of investments. As from street itself - its one of iconic moscow places to visit, like Red Squere, Gorky Park or VDNH, but unlike the other places, it stuck in Luzhkov's (former Moscow mayor) period and became a monument of 1990's and 2000's vibe. So, yep, its more or less a tourist trap with lots of overpriced souvenier shops, but that what this street should be as per its own nature and its own unique vibe.

Hello how did you find the courage to make the jump to move? What do you do for living? Do you intend to stay long term? I am looking to network with western foreigners in Moscow as I would eventually like to move there and do business there. I have what many would consider a good situation in the UK but I want to move for a while in Russia and like I said do business because there are so many opportunities with their import substitution programs and so many companies looking to export and aggressively expanding. I grew up in Glasgow (but spent most of my life England and a little while in continental Europe). I hope you respond and we could correspond a little bit.

Hi Scottish Guy! Sorry, but I still don't know your name. You've never mentioned it in your videos, or at least I haven't noticed. Regarding Arbat street, it's not just for tourists; locals enjoy it too. Unfortunately, the true vibrancy of this place is best experienced in warm and cloudless weather on Fridays and Saturdays after 6 pm, when people start to flow there together. I highly recommend visiting again under those conditions. You won't regret it!
На счёт престижности Старого Арбата, это спорный вопрос. Сейчас там жить, наверное не очень комфортно, постоянный шум от туристов, почти каждый день в районе ресторана Прага играют городские музыканты, для молодёжи и туристов, эта движуха наверное здорово, но жить в этом постоянном грохоте спорное утверждение. Я думаю более престижное место на Остоженке и прилегающих к ней улицах. Кстати советую туда сходить. Там очень много древних особняков. Тем более Остоженка находиться не так далеко от Арбата

6:40 As a local, I can say that no, I don’t come to Arbat. Maybe once a year, and only for some business. I spend most of my time in the area where I live and work, and I have nothing to do in the city center. On weekends I prefer to relax at home :)
most people (muscovites) I know rarely visit the center either. This is more of a tourist place

Я училась в Эдинбурге в Edinburgh Napier, и вообще люблю Шотландию. Очень интересно смотреть ваши видео, взгляд шотландца на мой родной город. Арбат не очень люблю, слишком туристическое место в Москве. На мой взгляд, лучше прогуляться по Маросейке, Покровке, Цветной бульвар и переулки рядом. Район Хамовники зеленый и просторный. Еще интересно понравится ли вам ВВЦ, это метро ВДНХ.

Много в Москве знаменитых улиц на самом деле. Просто Арбат действительно был более раскручен в свое время из-за неформалов, художников и сувенирных лавок.

Hello, nice videos! Arbat and New Arbat also places for artists as you showed. Locals and some fans of rock-music culture goes to Viktor's Tsoi wall there also. And generally in Moscow you can find some 'similar' places in tourism meaning such as Patriarshiye prudy for example. I think Moscow City as well. If you want see gastronomical places, you can visit Depo on Lesnaya street, Belorusskaya metro station; or some 'rynky' like Danilovsky market or Cheremushki (not so far from Shabolovskaya btw ;) ), many others. Good luck and have a nice time and walks in our big city!

Arbat for me is a street where i do a tatoo and there is the wall of Victor Tsoi... :D

Arbat,or perhaps Orbat means suburban from Arabic,mostly called after Crimean Tatar merchants who either reside there or did business in area.However Tatars are Turk language.Must be their travels abroad.City was whatever inside kremlin and indeed it was white,nothing resembles from current Italian red version.Now,I don’t think Moscow residents would go there.Like New-Yorkers in Time square…Much of old Arbat is gone by 1950-60… Tram was running through the street.Tracks were removed before it became pedestrian in 80-s I think.Old houses,churches were destroyed .You could find old buildings and churches in neighborhood around,particularly south,towards river.And that would be some of most expensive residential part of town.Bulat Okudjava was idol for some in 1950-60,and some seventies.Theatre you showed is Vachtangov theatre,one of perhaps 126 plays could be played in one night during 1950-70 throughout town.No other town in the world could brag about it.Slowly untreated capitalism took over city and whole country.That’s what everyone currently sees - oceans of Chinese visitors.

Georgy Zhukov is not a general, he is a marshal. He is called the Marshal of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941 - 1945! He commanded the fronts of the Red Army at the end of the war and hosted the Victory Parade on June 24, 1945 on Red Square, where our soldiers threw fascist banners at the foot of the mausoleum. There is a video of this parade.

Arbat is definitely a tourist trap but a pleasant walk through. I'd never eat down there, tho. It sucked when i arrived in 2006 and still does. Much better places in Moscow to eat at and spend time.

It could be interesting to visit GUM just to see if western brands are still there. My guess is that they are. How's the traffic btw? I'd imagine that it's pretty bad considering the festivities that are just around the corner.

Синие купола, декорированные звёздами, символизируют Пресвятую Богородицу.
Зелёные купола являются символом Святой Троицы.
Серебряные купола означают православную чистоту и святость.
Многоцветные купола, одни из самых редких, призваны в максимально возможной земной мере отразить красоту Небесного Царства
Arbat - a no-no. Like in the movie LA story: "I will be your robber today". Not the safest place in the world. If something bad can happen in Moscow it will be here. In the summer, when there is a shitload of tourists.

Arbat street stuck somewhere in late 90s. I don't like modern Arbat. Places like Kamergerskiy and Stoleshnikov lanes, Kuznetskiy most, Rozhdestvekka and Nikolskaya streets are mush better.

I don't drink coffee but hopefully Stars Coffee is better than Starbucks. A friend tried Starbucks coffee once and said it tasted like watered down horse urine, lol.

Арбат дорогая бездушная улица, где пытаются развести туристов на деньги. Попробуйте погулять в Замоскворечье, улица Пятницкая или в районе Ивановский горки (между улицами Покровка и Солянка), погуляйте по Бульварному кольцу, в парке Коломенское

парк Коломенское мое любимое место Москвы, но там сейчас опять ремонты и реконструкция, местами проход закрыт е сожалению
Сейчас в Коломенском яблони цветут, а потом сирень и черемуха
