I've always felt like SMB lost levels is way too overhated. Sure it's underwhelming as a sequel to SMB. And it's level design is pretty much like walking through a path of burning coal. I don't know why but. theres something fun about it. it's brutal but it's not unfair, it's a good challenge for people who mastered the original game. Basically what Shiggy thought in it's development.
In retrospect, I view this more like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and while I think SMB2 US is a more interesting game with more new to offer, and like its strange additions to the cast, perhaps this should’ve still been allowed to release on the NES. Maybe not as SMB2 proper, but under the Lost Levels name still.
The lost levels is a great example of first impressions do matter the most, that easy to obtain poisonous mushroom and harder to obtain powerups really cemeted the idea of an unfair game right from the get go, which is slightly true.
29:00 if Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) never happend we wouldn't have: Birdo Shy Guy Bob-Omb Ninji Snifit Peach's floating mechanic Toads speed slot machines all the music remixes all the things listed have seriously impacted the future of the Mario franchise
That's actually almost completely false. In the og version, to get the 4 secret worlds A through D, you have to beat 8-4 8 times, but you can use warps all 8 times so it's not actually that bad since the optimal warp route is mostly the easier levels of the game anyway. The only world for which you need to beat the game without warps is world 9, and you only need to do it once to do so. And I have no idea where the heck you got the "without dying once" part from, for both the things I just mentioned you can die and game over all you want while going for these and you'll still unlock the secret worlds.

The original versions of smb and the lost levels have way more differences than the all stars versions
Interesting. If I ever revisit this topic in the future I’ll make sure to pay more attention to the originals

Let's not forget that In the og famocom version you had to bet it 4 TIMES WITHOUT WORP ZONES OR DIEING ONES to get the secret worlds
