I've never been to NO, but I love the atmosphere and how it blends the location in the story. I think a lot of the best Disney animated tales take great advantage of setting.
Outlaw7263 oh i see, maybe. .or as the crititc said most likey due to it being a 2d film or it having princess in the name. either way its an underrated film and i honestly wish disney was still producing 2d films. although i wont argue that 3d films are terrible, to the contrary most recent films like moana and zootopia were amazing.
Mama Odi actually criticizes them constantly looking for a loophole. That's what 'Dig a Little Deeper' was all about. She new from the start that Naveen marrying Tiana would make her a princess, which meant kissing her would break the spell, and she knew that Naveen was already falling for her. That's one of the big points of the movie, was that finding loopholes *doesn't work.*
@@cpotisch Still not as hard to get as Doug makes it look, is just your simple "a royal true love kiss" just that in the 1920s wasn as common as in the rest of fairy tales, even the "silly" funeral is how people in New Orleans celebrates death
+hunnykun101 I don't think it's as much about understanding as it is about narrative flow. If there are too many things going on the story doesn't have focus which makes people less invested.
Why do people never talk about "Dig A Little Deeper"? I think it's the best song in the movie. I only saw the movie once, but that song and scene was the most memorable thing about it to me.
agreed also the crazy grandma trope mixed with grandmother willow / fairy godmother is always welcome and this is the first time since cinderella that the fairy godmother type character got their own song that actually has a purpose to the story and the message. Plus, I love that they made a nod to classic gospel music with the cranes and storks singing around her. She reminded me of the old lady from Because of Winn Dixies or other similar characters who in my opinion represent the idea that people around you while you may not understand them do often have wise words to say if you listen well enough.
Dr Facilier was the best thing about this movie. He had a great villain song, he was smart, he was mysterious, he was charismatic and he was charming. You gotta admit, you don't get villains like that every once and a while!
i want a sequel with the best friend Charlotte as the lead getting her happy ending it better be filled with puffy dresses, flapper music, and insane hilarity
Why would it be because of Tiana's color? Aladdin, Mulan and Pocahontas are in the top 10 highest-grossing animated films in history and had asian, arabs and native americans as their main characters. The CG movies trend would be the better explanation
+Bender B. Rodriguez Yes, but you are looking for a princess in the USA in the 1920s, which isn't known for actual royalty. Also, but the time this movie came out Disney has all gung ho in pushing its princess line, and it was obvious that they needed a token black princess someway/somehow. It was certain to cause eye rolling due to the obvious pandering, needed or needlessly is up to the individual person.
Plot Twist This movie DID NOT cause a lot of controversy because she was black. The reason black people had a problem with the film is because the FIRST black princess stayed a FROG through MAJORITY OF THE MOVIE ! I think that is why this movie " failed ". Also the songs weren't memorable and like you said the story was too complicated. So stop it with that we are pulling the " race card". It had NOTHING to do with racism and we aren't complaining about racism.
I honestly think this movie is amazing but yeah, is a little too much going on sometimes but I really admired it for trying to be a little more complicated
"the story is to complicated" umm... no. Just no. This is neither to complex or even complex at all. This is the right amount of detail that will give everyone that one thing they really like to pay attention to. Whether it's the darker concepts of blood magic, the romantic plot of the two trying to get past their own and each other's faults, or even the story of her getting her business each story is tied with each other and you see all the details effect each other in the right way. Nothing was really pointless in this movie, everything felt like it at least had some purpose and each character had a charm to them. I agree with everything else! The music was the right theme but that means you need to like that theme.
The Nostalgia Critic complains that the story in movies is too complicated very often and i dont think the story is any complicated or hard to understand at all in any of those movies.
Comolex in that too much was going on at once and covered shallowly for you to really give a fuck, so yeah, it seemed pointless because of that. Like seriously. the firefly thing...
I was 8 year old when I watched this and I had no problem following the plot. My sisters too had no problem as well and they were younger than me. I think Doug is just finding a way to be as cynical and find a flaw in reviewing these movies but it is his opinion.
She's black, a hard worker, and American: three things that none of the other disney princesses have been. Also, the only one to have been turned into an animal.
Cinderella was a hard worker. And Pocahontas was American, considering she was born and raised in the very country that would become America. And Jasmine got turned into an animal in the TV series. But other things Tiana can claim that the others can't is that she's a business owner, she started out refusing to have a romance (Jasmine sort've did, but she made it clear she wanted to marry for love; Tiana started off having no interest in marriage), and she's the one who defeated the villain one-on-one (Mulan arguably defeated Shan Yu with Mushu's help, along with the assistance of her other friends; Tiana had nobody else around her when she defeated Shadow Man). Plus Tiana also had another human girl as a friend, something not too many Disney princesses can claim.
not only did she have a human friend, but they didn't immediately jump to the jealous girl friend trope which surprised me in the best way. she was obviously upset that things didn't go the way she'd hoped but she was supportive and loving and a good true friend and i think that's one of the best parts of the film to me. PURE GIRL FRIENDSHIP, YES
I went to the cinema three times for this one. Ok it was mostly because I loved that they went back to 2d animation, but I relly like to movie as a whole too.
This movie is so pretty! And with great music. I find myself singing these songs way more than the classics. I really don't get why people like all these 3d animated disneyflicks. To me they all look pretty much the same but with different hairstyles... The "realistic looks" they are going for right now makes me feel like they might as well do liveaction movies instead...
+Lisa J I have a conspiracy theory that Disney is trying to kick out Pixar. Unless I don't know any Pixar movies before A Bug's Life and Toy Story, Pixar started out with 3d animation. If Disney was smart, they would stick with 2d animation since a lot of companies are moving towards 3d animation. Of course, they would also need people from the Pixar team to teach them how to make a story but that's a topic for another day.

+Lisa J, Tangled actually has a non-realistic, painting-like look. Or at least that's what they were trying to achieve.

+Kurt Angerdinger > This girl doesnt have any free will at all What makes you say that? The emotions always treat Riley as an individual, and they're there to guide her, but she is the one making the final decisions.
It's really heartbreaking that Treasure Planet didn't do so well, because it's one of my top 5 movies of all time. The animation is perfect, the CG spliced in is perfect, the music (Goo Goo Dolls, GAAAH!~) is perfect and heartfelt. The story doesn't drag, or rush. It's as good a movie as SHREK fucking was... Better, really. >_>;
I read an Entertainment Weekly article a few years back where Disney said they thought the reason the movie didn't do as well as it should was because of the title: "The Princess and the Frog." Specifically, the part with "Princess" in it. When you say "Princess movie" or "ballerina movie" or something like that, you get expectations, like the movie would only be appealing to young girls with dreams of being a princess themselves. The result was that not as many people saw the film, and with the next three Disney Princess films--Brave, Tangled, and Frozen--they went for titles that didn't emphasize the fairy tale princess aspect of the story. And those films ended up doing a lot better than Princess and the Frog, particularly Frozen. And I didn't feel the plot was that complicated. I mean, I'm a novelist who regularly reads Stephen King and is finding the Game of Thrones books relatively easy to understand, but I didn't feel it was overly complicated. Yes, there were loopholes and stuff, but I felt the story flowed pretty nicely, and had just the right amount of complexity. Maybe that's just me though.
+Rami Ungar what are you talking about didn't it break the 100 mill mark? I remember that when it opened it debuted at #1 like a week after Roy Disney died
Rami Ungar well it's a shame that they felt that way because it was better than I expected it to be, I hadn't had that much fun at the movies since I saw the Simpsons movie in 07
+Cosmoman78 What Rami said was that the /titles/ didn't emphasize the fairy tale aspect, not the movies themselves not being drawn from fairy tales. And yes, a reason I didn't see Princess and the Frog was its title, and why I wasn't really up to see Tangled when it still had the working title of "Rapunzel", so I can appreciate why Disney had that thought about a reason why Princess and the Frog didn't do as well as they hoped.
Lord Biscuit Yeah, but compared to other Disney films it is. The Little Mermaid - rebellious mermaid makes a deal with a sea witch and becomes human. She must kiss a prince before an the sun sets in three days, or else she will belong to the witch. She must do all this without her voice. However, you could also 'dig a little deeper' into the storyline by saying Ursula wanted control over the kingdom and manipulated the innocent teenager into giving her ultimate power, Ariel is suffering from angst, loneliness and desire, as well as deep curiosity, and feels her father is being unfair, so purposely makes the rash decision to agree with the deal as a form of disobedience and rebellion.
He didn't tell all of it, the plot is REALLY convoluted. And then there's the subplots - for example, the gator who wants to play the trumpet with humans, that's not mentioned here. Compare to Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast... Most Disney movies have a streamlined plot, and that really works to their advantage.
Yeah the movie has a complicated storyline. It just jumps to the next objective to the next objective. Some things doesn't even make sense like Charlotte technically a "princess" at the festival? Like does that count? I dont think they elaborated it more, other than "That's what my magic gumbo said". The stakes are none, like yeah the festival will end but the curse doesn't have a time limit and why does it have to be midnight? Didn't the festival ended way earlier at that time? And why didn't Mama Odie tell them to get married anyway, she seems like she knows what will happen if they do. And there's so much like Facilier uses his subject to cosplay as Naveen using the amulet, he plot to get them wed, but the amulet needs blood from the prince and then he sends his "friends" to find Naveen, then plots to kill Charlotte's father using a voodoo doll but he has to wait for his subject and Charlotte to marry for real. Its hard to summarize the plot unlike say Tangled who's story flows more better and in turn makes it more enjoyable to watch
Why can't Disney and DreamWorks both have a 2D and 3D animation studio? I can understand DreamWorks closing theirs since How to Train Your Dragon 2 didn't do well, but Disney should have more than enough money to keep their 2D studio open. Either way, it just seems like a waste after both companies have made such visually stunning 2D movies such as the Princess and the Frog, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and The Road to El Dorado. Edit: It doesn't matter whether a film is 2D or 3D; if the story is crap, then it will bomb.
Radioactive Panda I'm very confused by this entire comment. HTTYD2 didn't do well? Are we on different planets? Also The Road to El Dorado was a DreamWorks film, and was not a monster hit. It made money, and did WAY better than Sinbad if I remember correctly (I may have the two switched), but both made money.
www.cartoonbrew.com/business/dreamworks-lays-off-dozens-of-employees-as-dragons-2-continues-to-underperform-100957.html Or just Google "dreamworks employees fired after how to train your dragon 2". Also, I know what studio made which movie. I was listing off 2D films made by the companies that were the most praised aesthetically. Disney is a large company that has more than enough money to keep their 2D studio open. A portion of the revenue they make from the Disney parks and films could be used to keep the 2D studio open. They could change it from movie focused to TV focused. TV animation is cheaper to produce and takes less time to make than a movie. Disney tends to have one cartoon on their network (not counting JetX or Disney XD), whereas Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network have 5 or more. A big part of animation is toy sales, and no company can handle merchandise like Disney. They also can't move the show to Disney XD. After it moved channels, Wander Over Yander had a massive drop in viewership and was cancelled shortly after. Same with Gravity Falls, except Alex Hirsch ended it. My main point is that it just seems like a waste that a majority of animation studios made such beautiful 2D films, but are 100% focused on 3D animation. Especially when some characters just are "translated" well in the 3D world (Norm of the North).
Ok, when you say a film did not do well, you look at the critical rating, and how much it made. HTTYD2 has a 92% approval rating, which is insane, and made $621.5 million at the box office out of $145 million, which is very good. Stock ratings are another creature altogether. Further research showed that that decision was spurred by a decision made on Wall Street, which expected an insane opening night turnout, and it was on short $16 mil to that projection, which for films is pocket change, so the entire event is ridiculous anyway. In short, the film did VERY well, but that event is mixed into stock politics, which is completely independent to how well a film did. I don't disagree that 2D animation really should not be swept under the rug like it is. I was just extremely confused by those specific statements, as how they were worded were not clear. Especially when your 2D list is all Disney and only one DreamWorks, without any clarifing statement on what studio you are talking about. I will say, though, that Don Bluth coming back to do the Dragon's Lair movie, completely 2D hand drawn animation, is definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully other studios will get the hint that there's a large audience who wants that back.
They don't care about making 2D films anymore if they don't get big hits = big money out of them. 3D animation is cheaper and more profitable, the only reason for keeping the 2D studio open is the art, and it seems only Walt himself ever cared about that.
Universe Artist 3D is definitely not cheaper, not for Disney or DreamWorks. Frozen cost $150M to make and it’s only the 10th most expensive animated movie. Tangled cost $260M. It’s an issue of trends. Disney made Princess & the Frog hoping to regenerate interest in 2D animation. The movie didn’t do well. There are a few reasons for that (black protagonist, flimsy script), but Disney took it to mean the public wasn’t interested in 2D. I’m not sure they’re wrong. There are always people who’ll complain about the lack of originality in Hollywood, the lack of quality family films, lack of cerebral summer movies, lack of 2D animation, etc. Most of the time when studios try to address those complaints, they end up losing money. It’s not enough to demand better product, you have to be willing to consume it when it’s available or else the studios will return to what works for them.
I hope 2D animation doesn't die out I like 3D but when you have shit movies they're really bad. At least 2D animation looks good even if the story sucks
+Nessie The Lochness Monster we need TRADITIONAL aiamtion. With cels, everything is either a 3D model, or it's 2D but it's done on tablets, so it's still imagry generated by a computer (CGI) but 2D CGI (yes that's a thing.)
+Nessie The Lochness Monster i can guess the Oscar will go to Inside Out this year, and to Pixar or Disney's CG again next year, and again the following year etc...
+God of Nintendo I'm not sure that going back to the traditional hand painting is really necessary... While it's kinda neat and all, now that software has gotten better and people have got better at using it, the digital stuff is more or less able to emulate the handpainted stuff... It'd be nice to have a bit more of a mix of both going on anyway though.
What I loved about this film was that they kept the modern slang to an absolute minimal, the characters actually sounded like they belonged in 1920s New Orleans.
No critic. Just no, you are in the wrong here. Dr Facilier is not good. He is phenomenal. I mean ok, he is no Frolo or Scar, but he is way cooler than either of them, has some very good lines and in my opinion the best Disney song ever.
Friends on the Other Side was amazing and Dr. Faciller is a fantastic villain. He was the reason why I avoided watching Princess and the Frog until later on despite loving the movie after watching it for the first time when I was a child because he was frightening and seeing the villain being dragged to hell is scary asf
Personally, i think it's one of Disney's best hand drawn films ever. The songs are extremely memorable and the characters are great. The animation is freaking crazy and I love it.
I ate at the Princess and the Frog-themed restaurant aboard the Disney Wonder at it was amazing. They also did a show in their main theater where Michael Leon Wooley, the voice of Louis performed for us and talked about how the role changed his life. A couple nights later, I was walking around the ship and ran into him and we took a pic together.
I felt bad when we went to Disneyworld (for the first and possibly last time, as a one-time family vacation we saved up for a year for). Rapunzel and Tiana were together in the same meet & greet. My daughter had so obviously come for Rapunzel. My daughter is Rapunzel in appearance and personality, oh so much, and I had designed and sewn a Rapunzel dress for her to wear that day. The woman portraying Tiana took it all in stride, and caught the attention of my youngest son, who is autistic and was wearing his green noise-reduction headphones. He didn't say a word to her, but we got some adorable pictures of the two of them hugging. As we left, my eldest heard the little guy say in wonder, "Tiana said that I was her little friend." Now, whenever we watch Princess and the Frog, he remembers and mentions it. As far as he's concerned, he, *personally*, is Tiana's little friend. Yes, the drawn and animated Tiana on the screen.
This is probably the only princess my dad would approve of. He used to change the classic Snow White lyrics to "someday my prince will come, but until then I'll go to college and get a degree..." yep true Disney magic. Thanks dad
this is my favorite disney movie of all time so i was PRAYING that you didn't destroy it. it was the first princess movie that i got to see in theatres, making tiana my role model at the time (i was 6 and she still is). it's just an amazing film and i personally think it needs more recognition.
I know I'm late, but as an historian, the "that's how things were" argument never works for me. It's usually from people who are what I call Armchair Historians. They think that in the medieval period, thirteen year old girls often married seventy year old men. They think that it's okay that Thomas Jefferson raped enslaved children, because "everyone thought it was okay then". No. Both of those things are bullshit, and so is the argument here that it's "changing history". There were plenty of black waitstaff in the 1920s. That doesn't mean that white supremacy was over. It wasn't. That doesn't mean that everyone was ~equal~. We weren't. There was still mass oppression, and sexual violence, and murder. But to claim that there couldn't have been a black waitress in 1920s LA is fucking ridiculous, and people who learn their shit from Game of Thrones and the like need to stop passing themselves off as historians.
You are DEFINITELY right about armchair historians. I believe that Disney actually did include a point in the movie that displayed the prejudice of the era. In the scene at Tiana's restaurant that morning, Lattie offers Tiana the last of the money for her restaurant, if Tiana serves food for her party that night. Tiana does it, and talks to the realtor's because she got all the money to buy the restaurant shes been saving for her entire adult life, and the realtor's say: "a little woman, of your... background, would have had her hands full tryin to run a big business like that... uhhh.." in my opinion, that was the perfect way to show prejudice in this movie. she worked so hard to save all that money, and they led her on, and let her do it, and told her at the last minute that someone else wanted it, and she wouldn't have been able to handle it because of her "background". ooh, also this movie takes place in New Orleans, not L.A.
Yes but looking things in the past with current eyes is not good either, things DO were different back then, a black person marrying a white one would be simply ridiculus, a black guy in an european royalty (like in cinderella) HECK NO, they guy with the idea would be put on jail at least! Also you cannot just guess future morals, so trying to be in the time period and getting on the mind of the era is just fine
I've noticed that Doug gets confused rather easily. I mean, he got confused by the premise of Monster's Inc and that was pretty straight forward. This one is a little more complicated, but still easy to follow. I like the more complicated stories to need to think about.
I have a single complaint. And, maybe the movie addressed this, and I just missed it. But, when Tiana kissed frog Navin, she wasn' t a princess, so she turned into a frog. But later, Lottie kisses him after the midnight deadline, which means she wasn't a princess, but nothing happened to her. And she kissed him several times, so what the heck?
Singing Wolf it probably was just a one-time thing. I mean you can only do so much in such a limited time. But yeah it is a pretty noticeable loophole when you think about it.
My guess is that since this happened after Dr. Facilier was dragged into Voodoo Hell, that must have taken some of the curse's effects away. So when Lottie kissed Naveen, nothing happened because Facilier's effects have practically disappeared, thus preventing Naveen's curse from spreading to other people that come into contact with him. It probably doesn't fully explain this issue, but that's at least what I gathered ever since I first saw this movie, which I still love.
It's because Mardi Gras ended. Because of that, The mayor wasn't the king of Mardi Gras anymore, so Charlotte stoppped being a princess. They did address that in the movie ;)
Four-eyed Faye Right, but tiana was not a princess when she kissed him, and she became a frog. So if Lottie wasn't a princess when she kissed him, shouldn't she be a frog, too?
My theory: because Tiana kissed him in order to get money for her dinner (selfish reasons) while Charlotte kissed him trying to help her friend(s) without malice in her heart (a good deed with no attachements), according to fairy tales curses and magic do react to this things... but who knows :P
This is one of those movies where i'm not really motivated to seek it out and watch it again but it's incredibly memorable for me. It's probably my 2nd favorite Disney movie of its kind. All I really wanted to hear was praise for "friends on the other side" and/or the villain. Wish fulfilled.
I love this movie, I remember going to see it in the theater with my roommate Tim, we were both in our early 20s. And yeah, it was a weekday afternoon, but the theater was full of adults, even over a week after its release. But it was also in FL, and there was a very large Creole population where we were.
As a kid I was a little iffy about seeing it. but now that I'm older this movie is amazing! I loved the characters, the songs, the animation, and especially the development of the romance. I just wish I could get it on dvd....
I love this movie. Dr. Facilier is my favorite character and my fourth favorite Disney villain. One thing I don't understand, though, near the end when Charlotte kissed Naveen, the spell doesn't work, so why didn't she turn into a frog like Tiana?
+Miraculous PAnda!?!?!?!?! What they mean is why didn't Charlotte turn into a frog like Tiana did. Tiana turned into a frog because she wasn't a princess. Charlotte was considered one until midnight, which they missed, but she stayed a human.
+MegaSoulhero Maybe (and this is a BIG maybe) because tiana did it for selfish reasons (get money for the restaurant) while charlotte did it for her friend and without malice in her heart?... maybe.... kinda... i agree with facilier being one of the best disney villains out there though :P
+Jackie Winston someone named shadowkrono said it could be because of intent: i.e. Tiana did it for money (a very practical quid pro quo that might be seen as selfish by a rigid spell) meanwhile Charlotte did it while gaining nothing either way other than her best friend and her maybe boyfriend turned back to normal. Sounds like a good theory to me
I really liked the story. Sure, it's really complicated for a fairy tale story, but it honestly isn't that complicated when watching the movie. Like, the way he explains it makes it seem a lot more complicated but when I saw it as a teenager (while my sister was a kid) we both got the plot really easily. By adding this they have a great villain, an amazing princess, and a variety of great characters.
Nah, I thought it was pretty straightforward too. Facilier is an agent of dark voodoo gods, tasked with dealing with the prince to take over the town. The prince is dealt with, but his blood is necessary to finish the job. So Facilier needs the frog, the frog just wants to be human, and hijinks ensue.
Doug keeps using the word "complicated." I don't think it means what he thinks it means. He does recite the plot here pretty accurately. I think the problem with the plot, which is something I realized after a few viewing as a teenager, is not that it's complicated but that there are too many conveniences thrown in that cause the narrative to not flow well. And that is a huge flaw.
+kchandaman That may be, I remember Doug also pointing out Wreck-It-Ralph's plot was kind of complicated, but that the narrative flowed it in a way that made it easy to sit through. Basically something hard to describe, but easy to watch.
Mary Clark it was very well explained To keep the shadow man alive he needs to trick the mayor of the town for power Naveen escapes and tries to turn human but ends but dragging tiana along with him
I wonder if Doug realizes that the "Shadow Man" is just what the people of New Orleans calls Dr. Facilier... Heck, he probably isn't even an actual doctor.
What I really like about this movie is that it doesn't portray Charlotte as the bad one. She tries to help Tiana in her own way but she doesn't understand poor people's problems and end up being mostly a comic relief
When I was a kid I always loved watching this movie, and I still love it today. it shows you if you work hard your dreams will come true😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
This is My favorite Disney princess movie EVER. The colors are BEAUTIFUL and the characters are SOO ENTERTAINING. Plus the songs are AMAZING, CATCHY and The vocals are very amazing.
Yeah, actually....Now that I think about it, I can see how this plot would be more confusing to someone who isn't used to Louisiana Traditions or the concept of Mardi Gras. As a resident of Louisiana, I had no issues with it whatsoever.
The Princess and the Frog used to have been my favorite Disney movie when I was little. Looking back at it, I'm surprised I didn't get nightmares from that film.
If this movie is too complicated, that's just you. Children understand this movie. This movie also hit on social issues of the time. When Tiana was trying to buy the building, the jerks who decided not to sell were clearly racists. Watch that scene again. Watch what they say. They hint at it with all the subtlety of a brick to the head. Facilier's villain song is one of the best ever. Listen to the lyrics. Think about them. It's not just a good song. It's outstanding. He's tired of being stamped on and denied opportunities, and it doesn't take a genius to understand what he's talking about. He was desperate and had motivation that wasn't just jealousy and power. He was tired of being treating like shit in a southern state at at time when black people were lynched. Disney wasn't heavy-handed with the racial issues of the time. They didn't erase them, the way some people would have liked (which would have angered people too), but they didn't beat you upside the head with them. Also you pointed to Ray loving the star as a silly thing. Did you pay attention to the end? When he died (oh, SPOILER), he became a star, which is when we learn that Evangeline wasn't just a star. His love had died, and he was mourning for her.
I love this movie. It's one of my absolute favorite Disney movies along with Mulan, Sleeping Beauty, and The Emperor's New Groove. I noticed (on Tumblr) a lot of the controversy was "Why does she fall in love with a white guy?" They accused Disney of being racist because of that. Which is stupid. She falls in love with someone who is, deep down, a good man, and who she mostly knew as green! So shut up!
Jami JoAnne Russell How can they say he's white though? He legit has brown skin and I thought most people assumed he was Middle Eastern or Southeast Asian!
Ugh, Tumblr has turned into this cesspit of "let's all band together to talk about X media is oppressive whether it is or not!" They're just looking for something to talk shit about and look like they're champions of justice. I know it's not ALL Tumblr, but a good majority of that site has turned into the assholes I'm describing above.
I vastly prefer hand drawn films over 3D animation. And this is actually my favorite Disney movie, and Tiana is my favorite Disney princess! I really liked it...I never found the story that complicated either.
Also, on the topic of racism; I went to Disneyland Paris (and Disney Orlando) and tried so hard to find a Tiana doll and could I find one ? Nope! Considering they sell them in highstreet Disney stores over here I feel like something's going on higher up (it may be to do with lower demand for Tiana specifically but for the people who actually do want her it's frustrating)
I didn't have any interest in this film when it came out, in fact I didn't even see it until a few months ago. But now I can say that it is one of my top Disney films.
Honestly, Princess and the Frog has one of the most INGENIOUS romantic setups! Two polar opposite people, a workaholic and a rich boy bicker and argue, but then eventually they teach each other what they enjoy, and therefore form a bond!
I like The Frog Princess now, but as an 8-year-old, I wasn't particularly looking forward to it. Even as a big Disney princess fan, it seemed like kind of a letdown, and here's why. Just the act of a Disney princess movie taking place in a somewhat modern setting just really killed the whimsical vibe I was looking forward to. Even though there is definitely magic present with the frog transformation and Dr. Facilier, the magic from the time period itself was gone. For example, the setting with Cinderella was fantastic because it had a sense of whimsy and even a bit of mystery to it simply because their world was so unlike ours. The case was the same with The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Mulan, etc. By setting the movie in the 1920s, which is quite modern in comparison to other Disney princess movies, the movie all of a sudden became too real and too familiar for my liking. The other films, though they had a historical basis, were still largely unique, mystical, and a little bit mysterious from the world today. In the 1920s you have jazz, cars, diners, etc. that are all amazing to have in real life, but the problem is it makes the Frog Princess movie a little *too* real. So yeah, hand-drawn animation probably had something to do with it too, but as a kid I just didn't like how real it felt in comparison to other Disney princess movies.
I want to become an animator when I’m older. Whether I work on TV shows or find a way to work at Disney, both are dream jobs of mine. If I do ever actually work for Disney, I’m going to make sure another great 2D film is released, because I’ll be honest, 3D animation is great and all, but all movies use it now. So I want to mix things up a little bit! (I am still glad that Japan makes 2D films. Studio Gibli [i apologize if it’s spelled wrong] makes absolutely beautiful movies!)
I feel like I'm the only one who got the real meaning behind how the curse functions in this story. .... first being that Dr Facilier brings out Naveen's greed in order to trick him into making the deal, and when he accepted it, the curse, fueled by his greed, turns that desire for green(money) against him. .... when he later meets Tiana, Naveen plays on Tiana's desire in wanting her own restaurant, to convince her to kiss him. this again brings out one's greed, in this case Tiana which leads to her sharing the same fate. in the later scenes the same could've happened to Tiana's friend, but Tiana stopped them both to confess her feelings to Naveen, and seeing both of them display their affection the friend forgoes her desire to help them both, but since the friend doesn't really love Naveen nothing really happens when she kisses him... ...... and you could guess the end quite easily, but my point is, this movie is much more clever then we give it credit for, in hiding the real meaning behind the kid friendly logic.
David J Thomson The devil, or loa, is in the details. Naveen never questioned the meaning of “green” and assumed it meant money. He croaked on that deal.
Well the movie is making a comeback I've seen more and more people talk about how great this film Is and I agree. The side characters are memorable and I think that all of the songs were pretty good but the villain song was the best. Just all of the visuals and the song was super catchy. The leads had actual chemistry and relationship instead of "love at first sight";
I saw this this on opening weekend in 2009. I was four years old and it was the first Disney princess movie I ever saw. Even though it is not my favorite, I still have a soft spot that I can't put away.
I think this is one of those movies that is a reminder that Disney is capable of some truly phenomenal visuals. The scale of the movie is astonishing. And the voudou imagery is so psychedelic I can't help but enjoy it.
Sadly, another thing about this movie that could have been the reason why it didn't do as well was indeed the villain. I knew parents that, when they heard he did Voodoo, turned them off to the movie. Voodoo can be a dark subject and something that many parents don't want their kids seeing in a movie aimed towards kids, even if it's portrayed in a bad light. Personally, I love this movie and I think Tiana is one of the best female Disney characters, up there with Belle and Mulan, but I know many parents said they wouldn't take their kids to this because of the whole Voodoo aspect.
I really don't think the issue with the movie not doing as well in the box office was racism. After all, we've had princesses of different ethnicities before. Mulan, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Esmerelda (okay, she's technically not a princess, but I'm still counting her); all of them weren't white, and their movies were well loved
I don't care what anybody says "friends in the other side"kicks ass The beautiful and creepy imagery mixed with a catchy song is so enjoyable for me I could follow the story recently we but where this movie really succeeds us the visuals
I liked it, felt the "When we're human" song was a definite sinker song though, AND I was hoping the rich girl's dog would have more lines weirdly enough. I mean, she talked for like A second, and then never again throughout the rest of the flick, it was just weird.
being from New Orleans we filled the theater. A lot of the jokes had us cracking up. I think it's because we got some of the local jokes.
+Angelous Mortis and critic pronounced New Orleans wrong
+davis magee I am from Mississippi and I frequently visit New Orleans and I got a lot of the jokes
+creolejoy. YES Thank you! The New Orleans spirit makes this movie glorious
I've never been to NO, but I love the atmosphere and how it blends the location in the story. I think a lot of the best Disney animated tales take great advantage of setting.
That happened with Moana in Hawaii too.
this movie is very underrated.
is it because she's black?
Outlaw7263 no actually, to me it wouldn't matter if she was black or not. i just love the characters, the music and the animation.
+smoky-cinnamon oh sorry what I meant was is it underrated because she's black?
Outlaw7263 oh i see, maybe. .or as the crititc said most likey due to it being a 2d film or it having princess in the name. either way its an underrated film and i honestly wish disney was still producing 2d films. although i wont argue that 3d films are terrible, to the contrary most recent films like moana and zootopia were amazing.
smoky-cinnamon ah ok, i haven't seen moana yet but zootopia was good
Timone was right. They really are just fireflies that got stuck up in that big bluish black thing.
PsychoHobbit1 firefly SOULS
Omg you're right
I always thought they were BIG BUALS OF GAS burning billions of miles away.
😧🤯
Amazing simply Amazing
Mama Odi actually criticizes them constantly looking for a loophole. That's what 'Dig a Little Deeper' was all about. She new from the start that Naveen marrying Tiana would make her a princess, which meant kissing her would break the spell, and she knew that Naveen was already falling for her. That's one of the big points of the movie, was that finding loopholes *doesn't work.*
A character can say that, but it doesn't change the issues with the plot.
@@cpotisch Still not as hard to get as Doug makes it look, is just your simple "a royal true love kiss" just that in the 1920s wasn as common as in the rest of fairy tales, even the "silly" funeral is how people in New Orleans celebrates death
I understand the the story easily, I really hope disney does use 2D animation again
since it should continued
I second this
+hunnykun101 I third it~!
I uhh..fourth it?
I honestly dont get this big "craze" over 3D animation, 2D looks way better in my opinion
+hunnykun101 I don't think it's as much about understanding as it is about narrative flow. If there are too many things going on the story doesn't have focus which makes people less invested.
+Flowti It was cool in the 90's. Now it's just overused.
Why do people never talk about "Dig A Little Deeper"? I think it's the best song in the movie. I only saw the movie once, but that song and scene was the most memorable thing about it to me.
Patrick McMahon IKR
That and "When were human"
Yea honestly all the songs are memorable to me. I never understood why people say it only has a few good songs.
I like friends on the other side
agreed also the crazy grandma trope mixed with grandmother willow / fairy godmother is always welcome and this is the first time since cinderella that the fairy godmother type character got their own song that actually has a purpose to the story and the message. Plus, I love that they made a nod to classic gospel music with the cranes and storks singing around her. She reminded me of the old lady from Because of Winn Dixies or other similar characters who in my opinion represent the idea that people around you while you may not understand them do often have wise words to say if you listen well enough.
I loved this film.
R.I.P. Disney's 2D department.
Yeah I know
Dr Facilier was the best thing about this movie. He had a great villain song, he was smart, he was mysterious, he was charismatic and he was charming. You gotta admit, you don't get villains like that every once and a while!
I hated the music in this movie but even I'll admit friends on the other side is a great song.
Brandonious15987 well you liked one of the songs so you dont hate all the music 😂
DAY-V Entertainment™ did you notice how he looks exactly like baron samedi who is a voodoo God?
Plus his hair under that hat was pretty gewd.
And he has the voice of Keith David.
i want a sequel with the best friend Charlotte as the lead getting her happy ending
it better be filled with puffy dresses, flapper music, and insane hilarity
OOO, DISNEY ANIMATED ROMCOM-
i wish they made a short film on that, like tangled ever after or Frozen fever
Have her hook up with someone who works in the royal household (instead of Naveen's little brother). That just creeps me out.
PLEASEEEE. charlotte is such a fun character, i need more of her!
A good 85% of all modern media is pandering to someone. If that is the bar then you can say almost anything is bad.
Plot Twist those 3 movies haven't done well as belle Cinderella and such
Good point!
Prince Naveen is literally the only Disney prince besides Prince Adam I can remember the name of, so props to Disney.
JM Andy whos Adam lol. I only remember Naveen, Philip, Eric
JM Andy Prince Adam is the beast from beauty and the beast right?
It isn't official... It is what fans call him but according to Disney he doesn't have a name.
Really? Prince Phillip, Prince Eric, Prince Hans.... besides... Adam isn't officially his name.
JM Andy you can't even remember aladdin?
"Friends on the Other Side" is one of my favorite songs in any Disney movie ever.
Oh and another thing.. Charolette's dad ISN'T the mayor of the town. Just a well respected 1% person
Yea he's a Sugar Baron.
I honestly think this movie is amazing but yeah, is a little too much going on sometimes but I really admired it for trying to be a little more complicated
"Let the kids have their fairytale" THIS MUST BE POSTED EVERYWHERE! Preach! 🙏🏻
The music was the right theme but that means you need to like that theme.
completely agree I didn't have a problem following this movie and i was like 11 or 12 when i first saw this movie
I understood it at 8-9 years old.
Yes indeed. I loved their friendship. :D
Mr.Classified 600
Pochahontas was American
And also Ariel was turned into a human, an animal
I ADORE this film, but it makes me sad because it reminds me how much I love and miss 2D Disney films. :'(
Same here
"There's a fucking talking frog, I think we'll live" Brilliant!
This is one of my absolute favourite Disney movies! I loved it! :D I've seen it so many times xD
Yyasemin Ssabanci Yes Yasemin! 😊
I went to the cinema three times for this one. Ok it was mostly because I loved that they went back to 2d animation, but I relly like to movie as a whole too.
I saw this movie a few times also and it really is a good movie to watch!
+Kurt Angerdinger
> This girl doesnt have any free will at all
What makes you say that? The emotions always treat Riley as an individual, and they're there to guide her, but she is the one making the final decisions.
And you are right on that since Disney now seems to be doing live action remakes of the Disney Renaissance movies.
It's really heartbreaking that Treasure Planet didn't do so well, because it's one of my top 5 movies of all time. The animation is perfect, the CG spliced in is perfect, the music (Goo Goo Dolls, GAAAH!~) is perfect and heartfelt. The story doesn't drag, or rush. It's as good a movie as SHREK fucking was... Better, really. >_>;
Yep, It's one of my most favorite movies too. I gonna go and watch it one more time right now.
A million times this. However, don't forget the small fact that it was released in between Harry Potter 2 and The Two Towers.
@Miss Candle
Yay someone else who enjoys Treasure Planet too!!! I knew that I wasn’t the only one!!!!
@@gb1706yeah
I don't know, I heard a lot of people saying it didn't make as much as it was expected to.
Rami Ungar well it's a shame that they felt that way because it was better than I expected it to be, I hadn't had that much fun at the movies since I saw the Simpsons movie in 07
+Rami Ungar Tangled and Frozen are taken from Fairy Tale FYI ^^
+Cosmoman78 What Rami said was that the /titles/ didn't emphasize the fairy tale aspect, not the movies themselves not being drawn from fairy tales. And yes, a reason I didn't see Princess and the Frog was its title, and why I wasn't really up to see Tangled when it still had the working title of "Rapunzel", so I can appreciate why Disney had that thought about a reason why Princess and the Frog didn't do as well as they hoped.
It really doesn't seem very complicated tbh.
Its hard to summarize the plot unlike say Tangled who's story flows more better and in turn makes it more enjoyable to watch
the story was simple
people just don't want to use their brains.
it is a bit tricky to follow actually now thinking about it.
It made money, and did WAY better than Sinbad if I remember correctly (I may have the two switched), but both made money.
www.cartoonbrew.com/business/dreamworks-lays-off-dozens-of-employees-as-dragons-2-continues-to-underperform-100957.html
Or just Google "dreamworks employees fired after how to train your dragon 2".
I hope 2D animation doesn't die out
I like 3D but when you have shit movies they're really bad.
+r0bw00d Song of the Sea, 2015
r0bw00d Always look for the indie and international films
What I loved about this film was that they kept the modern slang to an absolute minimal, the characters actually sounded like they belonged in 1920s New Orleans.
No critic. Just no, you are in the wrong here. Dr Facilier is not good. He is phenomenal. I mean ok, he is no Frolo or Scar, but he is way cooler than either of them, has some very good lines and in my opinion the best Disney song ever.
Giannis Polychronopoulos I salute you for those outstanding words of wisdom.
Another person 2 years too late agreeing w/ u
Bro, he got dragged to hell by his own demons. That makes him one of the most frightening villains
Thanks dad
I WANT THIS MOVIE
CMC 123 update: apparently I came up with it when I was younger and my dad kept the joke alive
this is my favorite disney movie of all time so i was PRAYING that you didn't destroy it. it was the first princess movie that i got to see in theatres, making tiana my role model at the time (i was 6 and she still is). it's just an amazing film and i personally think it needs more recognition.
Actually wasent a bad movie i felt it was underated.
@@ElliJelliZ LA is short for Louisiana... which is where New Orleans is. L.A. is Los Angeles. Just remember the periods in between.
@@micycles1200 oh sorry i didn't know that rule my mistake
Yes but looking things in the past with current eyes is not good either, things DO were different back then, a black person marrying a white one would be simply ridiculus, a black guy in an european royalty (like in cinderella) HECK NO, they guy with the idea would be put on jail at least! Also you cannot just guess future morals, so trying to be in the time period and getting on the mind of the era is just fine
I love the animation in this movie, it's so beautiful! I think I'll always prefer 2D animation to 3D, probably just because I grew up with it.
Carla Viz Same here. I grew up with 2D animation and I will always prefer that over 3D animation.
Regarding the box office performance, it probably didn't help that Avatar came out around the same time.
I've noticed that Doug gets confused rather easily. I mean, he got confused by the premise of Monster's Inc and that was pretty straight forward. This one is a little more complicated, but still easy to follow. I like the more complicated stories to need to think about.
Yeah I know
I can't believe they shut down the 2d studios. It upsets me so much.
I love how the best Disney films with an actual plot and developed characters make the least money and called a failure and are extremely underrated
I wanna see this world be in KH3!
+Nathan Alcantara YES! :D
The shadow man is a perfect boss battle cause the monster things already look like heartless. :D
+Tommy “tommy thekeyblademaster” thekeyblademaster Dont worry theres 2.8 then the next game is kh3 so i say a 2017 release is most certianly possible
+Nathan Alcantara The Shadow Man would totally try to trick the Heartless into leaving Maleficent to join him on the Other Side...
Tommy thekeyblademaster
Nomura has stated the next game after 2.8 is KH3
+Nathan Alcantara I swear theres' still so many possibilities before they just jump to star wars/marvel.
+MegaSoulhero Good question.
sokumo tanaka Maybe.
By adding this they have a great villain, an amazing princess, and a variety of great characters.
am i the only one who didnt find this a hard story to follow keeping in mind i was 8 when i saw it (i think)
I didn't find it that hard to follow either, even if there are some plot holes.
Mary Clark it was very well explained
To keep the shadow man alive he needs to trick the mayor of the town for power
Naveen escapes and tries to turn human but ends but dragging tiana along with him
I especially love this movie because I was born in the same place this movie takes place.
And Charlotte is my sister's name!
Madie Shion so...New Orleans?
Greentiger_420 yep!
Greentiger_420 well...not anymore. After hurricane Katrina we moved to Minnesota.
oof same
I wonder if Doug realizes that the "Shadow Man" is just what the people of New Orleans calls Dr. Facilier... Heck, he probably isn't even an actual doctor.
I freaking LOVE this movie!!!!
Francis Glasco Sometimes but not always.
This is my favorite after Beauty and the Beast. Love everything about it. The voice acting is fantastic.
I agree with you on Lottie. Every time she's on screen, I can't help but laugh!
I watched this when i was 4 and i understood the story fine.
Yeah, I don't get Nostaliga Critic's problem.
Yeah I know
Can we all just remember who voiced Dr. Facilier? That just makes it better in my opinion!
Keith David has a voice of pure, concentrated, coolness.
Yes!
Mr Keith David! Man, what a voice and what an actor!
Highly underrated film. I love it
If this movie is too complicated, that's just you.
Ugh, Tumblr has turned into this cesspit of "let's all band together to talk about X media is oppressive whether it is or not!"
They're just looking for something to talk shit about and look like they're champions of justice.
I know it's not ALL Tumblr, but a good majority of that site has turned into the assholes I'm describing above.
I still enjoy the site, but dang, I get so annoyed by the SJWs on Tumblr harassing people and saying things like that.
Jami JoAnne Russell He's not white...
Alice The Walice Ah, but according to Tumblr he is. Cause loads of SJWs whining "She falls for a white man! Disney is racist!"
I vastly prefer hand drawn films over 3D animation. And this is actually my favorite Disney movie, and Tiana is my favorite Disney princess! I really liked it...I never found the story that complicated either.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks for not beating it down, Doug!
...and it still has one of THE DARKEST villain deaths of the entire Disney Animated Library!
I FRICKIN LOVE THIS MOVIE. THE ANIMATION IS BEAUTIFUL AND THE SONGS ARE AMAZING
This is my favourite Disney film of all time
Also, on the topic of racism; I went to Disneyland Paris (and Disney Orlando) and tried so hard to find a Tiana doll and could I find one ? Nope! Considering they sell them in highstreet Disney stores over here I feel like something's going on higher up (it may be to do with lower demand for Tiana specifically but for the people who actually do want her it's frustrating)
Charlotte really needs her own movie!!
I absolutely adore this movie
What?! Hoe could you not remember " Dig a little deeper."?('o')!
Emilio Reyes Ikr? I remember every single song.
Saška Prpić I can sing and hum my way through the entire movie
It don't matter what you look like!
It don't matter what you wear!
This is my favourite disney movie I love it so much
I like The Frog Princess now, but as an 8-year-old, I wasn't particularly looking forward to it.
Specially when the modern setting isn´t really important for the plot.
And then Disney never made a 2d animated film again
They did Winnie the Pooh a few years later.
Inky Reads But such a bad idea for them to release it on the same weekend as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 😕
To be honest this is by far my favorite Disney movie! There is so much charm in this movie.
"But hey!, It's just a Theory... of Game Theory" -
Crítico de la Tecnología but that's just a theory a film Theory and cut.
i was about to comment that lol
eeeeh! Film Theory. Get it right
I remember watching this with my brother's kids. We really liked it.
There's a great song by Ne-yo on the soundtrack but it's played over the ending credits, not actually in the movie
The plot didn't sound complicated at all when I saw it lol.
This movie was amazing. It had the best message of any of the other 2d movies (Don't wait for your dreams to come true, make it happen)
Well the movie is making a comeback
I've seen more and more people talk about how great this film Is and I agree. The side characters are memorable and I think that all of the songs were pretty good but the villain song was the best. Just all of the visuals and the song was super catchy. The leads had actual chemistry and relationship instead of "love at first sight";
Finally some more positive reception to this movie. Not many give it that much
What a surprise. Doug thinks that the story is too complicated. Isn't this like the 10th disneycember that he's said this in.
I saw this this on opening weekend in 2009. I was four years old and it was the first Disney princess movie I ever saw. Even though it is not my favorite, I still have a soft spot that I can't put away.
friends on the other side alone was worth the price of admission
Really? Not going to mention the magnificent art that went into this film! Every frame is beautiful!!
I love this movie and the song "Almost there" stayed in my head forever and the other songs i do love as well.
I love this movie. It's what introduced me to jazz/blues and I loved it.
Going down the bayou!
I remember when I got this dvd as a christmas present some years ago and I literally watched it like 6 times in a row cause I loved it so much.
I love this movie.....also because it's located in my home state X3
I loved this movie! The music, the story, the animation! It's just fantastic! I love the characters too!
Pucker up buttercup!!
I don't care what anybody says "friends in the other side"kicks ass
The beautiful and creepy imagery mixed with a catchy song is so enjoyable for me
I could follow the story recently we but where this movie really succeeds us the visuals
I liked it, felt the "When we're human" song was a definite sinker song though, AND I was hoping the rich girl's dog would have more lines weirdly enough. I mean, she talked for like A second, and then never again throughout the rest of the flick, it was just weird.
