This movie has one of my favorite scenes in Disney history. The entire "That's How You Know" musical number is both hilarious and entertaining. Robert actually acknowledges the weirdness in everyone breaking out into song and dance. This movie is severely underrated. Also, I'm going completely off topic here but, R.I.P. Alan Rickman

My favourite joke was when the prince knocks on a door and a lady with three little kids and looking exhausted opens the door and sees him and says "You're too late".
anyone else notice that the man from giselle's dream at the beginning looks exactly like robert near the end of the film? i never realized it till now.
Alicethereaper666 I did which is why my poor mother nearly jumped when I stated shouting in the theater “ITS HIM ITS HIM!!” When rob first showed on the screen. He had blue eyes on the cover.
To me the most awesome thing about this movie is the insane number of Disney cameos. Jodi Benson, Paige O'hara, Judy Kuhn, Idina Menzel, (although I guess she wasn't at the time. You know what I mean), Julie Andrews, and hey even the dancers from Step in Time. They're all in this.
When I first saw this, I had no idea what it was about. I randomly watched it one day, and I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the humor and how they poked fun at their cliches in their own movies. I think it's fair to have more movies with women rescuing men seeing as how 99% of films are the opposite. Just because a spare few have done it doesn't mean it's over done. I'm happy to see more women in the heroic positions. It's a nice change to the stereotype! :D
Cinema Chief Yeah that's true, but during the time this was out it was a fairly new thing. It's probably not fair to penalize the movie because of the movies that came after it
Looking back on this film, not only do I think its a very good parody/homage to the old Disney films. But it actually respects the tastes of the audience while doing so. Giselle and Nathaniel choose the freedom of the real world, whilst Edward, Pip and Nancy choose the simple fantasy World of Andalasia. It's a nice little bookend to ensure that liking the older films is nothing to be ashamed of, the songs are still good and the art is still good too, albeit a bit dated. It actually respects the legacy of the golden age and its influence on pop culture and I think that's amazing, considering how cynicism has dominated the internet these days.
IgnitionPoint 2 Yay, I can see that James Marsden appeared in "Superman Returns" which is a weird symbolism. But that's not that, Amy Adams who played as a live action Lois Lane also appeared in DC Extended Universe along with his white beefcake Superman played by Henry Cavill. I guess that she relates with the Prince in "Superman Returns" and then he goes out with the new Superman in "Man of Steel" or "Batman V Superman." I guess she likes to see these dudes with s's on it.
That musical number in the park where she is explaining love is one of my guilty pleasures...its so disney and so hokey you want to role your eyes but find yourself humming/singing along
I LOVE this movie, but I agree about the third act. I find it so cringeworthy how the dragon narrates what's happening. Why did the screenwriters have to ruin this part? Ugh.
Yeah, and it’s like Doug said, the visual of a female lead holding a sword really wasn’t shocking anymore. I mean, Xena had just ended about six years before the movie came out
I would make the argument for this film that while it is a parody, its also an homage. It knows what makes the early Disney princess films work whilst poking a little fun at them. Narrissa's an entertaining fusion of the early Disney antagonists like the evil queen, lady tremaine and maleficent despite jabbering on too much during the ending. I also like how despite Giselle being affected during her time in New York, Edward mostly remains the same and struggles more with his surroundings. He looks dumb out of the fairytale world, but you legitimately believe he cares about Giselle, and is even okay with letting her go, just for her sake. What an awesome guy, he totally deserved to get with Nancy at the end. Good on him!
I know, that brilliant. Physical comedy is a lost art form. I’m amazed that Edward didn’t break his legs when he jumped off that bridge in Central Park.
MegaSoulhero Yup. Also, many fans (myself included) who were disappointed with the casting of Brandon Routh, felt that James Marsden would have been a far better choice for Superman. Also, Amy Adams later went on to play Lois Lane in Man of Steel.
+MegaSoulhero or they were referring to the poster for Wicked maybe it's like they were somehow promoting something that they didn't have the rights to even though the original star of that was in this film
I think Enchanted is my Mum's all-time favourite Disney film-she loved it! I saw it with her and my Dad and my brother REFUSED to see it. And even my Dad enjoyed it(that's saying something-he's pretty critical of films like this)!
I saw this film in the theatre back in 2007 when i was 5 years old I thought it was pretty cool how they went from animation to live action and after watching it again 14 years later it’s still fun and entertaining
"Enchanted" is a really good fairy tale parody film. The musical scenes were good, the characters were funny (including Amy Adams as the hot princess, I can't help it because of her hot looks), and it was a good live action/animated story which only belongs like "Mary Poppins" side of Disney live action films. I'll give fun fact that you probably didn't know that James Marsden & Amy Adams were both in a DC films. Yay, Marsden who played the prince appeared in "Superman Returns" as the reporter and Adams who played Giselle appeared in "Man of Steel" and more "DC Universe films" as ginger Lois Lane. Geez does this looks familiar? Wow, that beats my DC fan fiction career. Also yes, Idina Menzel appeared in this film which she did played the animated princess in "Frozen" as Elsa. Which is more familiar like we have a Menzel as the live action princess and the ginger princess. Oh jeez, it combines together. Oh my head is hurting me for combing this symbolism. Overall, a great musical film.
Actually, technically, because Disney's own 2D animation studio was totally shut down at the time of "Enchanted"'s release, the animation was done at the independent studio of James Baxter, a former Disney animator who brought life to Belle, Rafiki, and Jessica Rabbit.
When my sis convinced my brother and I to see this, we sat in the theatre glaring at her. Afterall, we were in our 40's then... Once the animation ended, we got it!! It was creative, funny, with great songs (my favs -- the dance and song in Central Park, Happy Cleaning song and of course, So Close at the ball). Definitely my favorite Disney creation with the real life combined with fantasy all rolled up in one. Thanks big Sis!!! BTW, my sons so hated when I'd sing the happy cleaning song when it was housework time and that went on for years!!! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
This movie is not one of the best Disney films but it is certainly logical (In a way). See, in most of the Disney princess films, the princess meets the prince for the first time and they fall in love immediately resulting in marriage. Yeah, reality doesn't work like that. So this movie uses the princess and the prince and shows us about them actually needing to get to know each other and see what they have in common. However, the one that you truly love is the one you have most in common with. The end. Yeah.
Newer Disney films don't do this as much, the last film that did this was the princess and the frog. But the ones like Mulan, Tarzan, tangled, Pocahontas, Hercules, even in beauty and the beast they don't get married at the end.
I kind of feel this way about the jokes in Frozen, like, characters have only been seen getting married a few times? Cinderella, Ariel, Rapunzel, and Tiana. It's like they're making fun of themselves for something that they're expected to do rather than something they do.
Am I the only person who thinks that Idina Menzel was totally wasted in this film and by wasted I mean she didn't sing a damn thing (but then I tell myself relax, Disney made up for it)
I really, really like this movie, honestly. I love what they did with it. Ironically I was so upset by the ending as a child but now? I prefer her getting the guy from our world instead if her prince.
On the damsel in distress stereotype: - Snow White is already dead. Yes the random prince saves her, but the real climax of the film is the dwarves taking revenge, don't think that counts. - Cinderella and her animals have all the credit for her success in the end. The prince does nothing but say 'yeah, that's her'. - Philip actually does something, but I stand by the belief that Sleeping Beauty was actually about the fairies rather than Aurora and Philip, and they are just as involved in the climax as Philip is, if not more. (1) - Eric is actually a beast! Just realized that he really did save the day by himself in Little Mermaid. (2) - Belle ultimately saves the beast in the end - Aladdin and Jasmine are both involved in taking down Jaffar, but I suppose Aladdin did originally intend to rescue her, so I guess it counts. (3) - Nala never needed no saving - Pocahontas saves John Smith - Esmerelda is saved in Hunchback I guess, but everyone had a damsel moment in that movie (4) - Meg is saved by Hercules (5) - Mulan saves China - Tarzan saves Jane (6) 6/12 I'd say from the popular animated Disney films actually enforce that stereotype. It's silly that people pretend that this is some kind of problem in media when it really isn't, especially when the most memorable characters in most of these films are the princesses where as the princes get shafted off as plot devices for the first three films.
What got on my nerves of this movie was that you have two couples who clearly love each other. The prince loves the peasant, and vice versa and the business man loves the business woman and vice versa. Then suddenly their introduced to each other and the movie pretty much forces this love quadrangle onto them. It's really annoying because, to my memory, all the characters were working extremely hard to make their relationships work. They all did love who they said they loved and they all fought for that love. But the movie wanted to try so hard to twist the ending that it breaks up couples who are compatible in hopes of making someone say "Oh hey, that's different."
Enchanted turns 15 today too! Made $127.8 million and $340.4 million worldwide It also pulled in a pretty damn big $93 million in domestic DVD/Blu-ray sales Kevin Lima who did 'Tarzan' directed I'm amazed it took a different approach by breaking away from most of Disney's fairytales being a satire The animated sequences show the filmmakers' passion as storytellers of old but make the live action portions just as lively My first introduction to Amy Adams who became the honorary Disney princess Giselle It actually subverts and pokes fun at the tropes; falling in love and marrying instantly, life isn't always a fairy tale, true love has to be earned when you least expect it, the woman can be the hero and the man can be in danger from time to time, nobody really breaks into song in real life It was a bold new direction for Disney princesses even Elsa from 'Frozen' took a few notes The CG still holds up This was also my first introduction to Idina Menzel James Marsden is hilarious as the Prince, Patrick Dempsey as the divorce attorney/single father needing the magic back in life along with his daughter, and Susan Sarandon deliciously plays this villainess Narissa So many references to other Disney works like Snow White, Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and most notably Sleeping Beauty even getting Jodi Benson (voice of Ariel) to cameo The soundtrack is beautiful and I'm glad they brought in Alan Menken who's a traditional for many Disney movies' scores Mature topics too like single parents and divorce And the ballroom scene near the end is so well done in terms of being presented and giving a sweet, romantic vibe The songs Ever After by Natasha Bedingfeld and So Close by John McLaughlin are the best numbers It's incredible now they released the sequel on Disney +
Finally it's out on Disney Plus this Friday since Disney Plus is 2 years old on Friday. I've been with Disney Plus since then and the first film I wanted to watch was this but it wasn't on it. Yes I know I have this on DVD and Bluray but who cares I love this film.
Amy Adams as Giselle feels like the live-action version of Pearl from Steven Universe. A dainty damsel turned into a sword swinging warrior by the end.
The movie isn't supposed to be "woke", Critic. It's also not just a satire for fairytales--which Disney didn’t invent in case you forgot--but also a love letter to the original Disney movies, it just does it in a fun way. There's no reason to overlook a satirical comedy/love letter THIS much.
In fairness, the whole "princes saving people all the time" stereotype is true sometimes. Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, was a helicopter pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance service for several years. He literally swooped in on his shining steed (an Airbus H145 rescue chopper) and saved people. Before that, he flew Sea King helicopters with the RAF Search and Rescue Service.
I have to disagree with you on this one. In my opinion, this movie is brilliant. I think it's pretty obvious that it's satirizing old Disney princesses, not new ones, and it cracks me up. Yeah, it's not Citizen Kane, but it's so much better than it should have been. I have so say I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I wasn't expecting it to be so funny. It highlights all the ridiculous factors in old Disney fairytales perfectly. 8/10 for me.
You know, looking back to this and Joey T's review, where he had very similar criticisms, back when I first saw this review, I did feel this was a legit complaint, that the story did take itself surprisingly seriously at times. And while I do agree entirely that the climax is way too in-your-face, which is also an issue I have with The Princess and the Frog's first half after my fifth time watching that, revisiting this film a while back, I suddenly realized this wasn't really meant to be a full-on satire. If anything, it's more of an homage to the classics that's not afraid to make a few jokes at their expense. It's more like what would happen if a classic Disney princess came into our world. I even remember one person who was seriously offended that Disney would have the audacity to mock their princess films, all while failing to notice how as the film progresses, Giselle's naivety is presented as being a good thing at times, what with her saving a failing marriage and even giving Robert a happier life.
I think that wouldn't be as powerful to show on screen. Imagine a 2-D giselle in 2-D New York summoning birds and singing. It would just look.. Ordinary?
When I first heard Carrie singing ‘Ever After’ I cringed so hard I got physically ill. She is as far from Disney as possible. I knew it was gonna get worse from there. While the concept of Enchanted was a hilarious idea, The execution was just that. An execution of Disney. By then My favorites were the modern Disney and the the reneissance with more active than passive female characters and barely existent male. Hell, Hercules May have been physically challenged but his moral growth was served to him on a plate mean while Mulan was urged to go back home. She knew she had a 99.99% chance of dying but she’d rather give her country a chance of survival than spend the rest of her life knowing she stood by. So Enchanted should have been classified as strictly mocking the classic disney.
While I love the film, you hit spot on with the criticism and I think it applies to modern Princess films as well. EVERY princess film tries to "go against the status quo" but like, all of them are doing that so the status quo is subversion
As I understand it, the original idea for this movie happened before the Disney Renaissance was underway an got delayed and as a result they hadn’t really known what modern Disney Princess movies would look like when they made the parody
I saw this in the theater as a kid when it came out and I still love it today. Not as good as something like beauty and the beast or lion king, but I'd much rather watch this than frozen or emperor's new groove.
I feel that this movie could have been a lot more relevant if it were released 10 years earlier, therefore at least Mulan wouldn't have already been released, which was the Disney movie that really tried to challenge the princess stereotype (although, was Mulan actually a princess?). And the 00s were the time when people were really trying to look for family movies that weren't just "male hero that saves helpless damsel in distress".
Not by blood no, but by the end the Emperor himself bows to Mulan along with the rest of the congregation and that is a big deal. It makes her *_more_* than a simple 'princess'.
This is one of the few isekai that I have seen done right, which is saying a lot cause there is so much isekai. Even America does this a lot; Smurfs, Fat Albert, Masters of the Universe, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Space Jam, even Samurai Jack technically.
My favorite scene of all of Disney, is when she gets the disgusting cockroaches, and diseased pigeons to help her clean the apartment. I never laughed so much watching a movie. The rest of the movie is perfectly passable. I did kinda want the leads to just be platonic friends, who helped each other grow and learn, so they could take those lessons back to their more compatible relationships. The prince was happy and willing to date her, and his girlfriend wasn’t over demanding, and it would have been nice to subvert expectations by the leads not ending up together.
This movie has one of my favorite scenes in Disney history. The entire "That's How You Know" musical number is both hilarious and entertaining. Robert actually acknowledges the weirdness in everyone breaking out into song and dance. This movie is severely underrated.

I kind of feel this way about the jokes in Frozen, like, characters have only been seen getting married a few times? Cinderella, Ariel, Rapunzel, and Tiana. It's like they're making fun of themselves for something that they're expected to do rather than something they do.
Am I the only person who thinks that Idina Menzel was totally wasted in this film and by wasted I mean she didn't sing a damn thing (but then I tell myself relax, Disney made up for it)
She said she was glad she got hired for her acting skills and not for her singing skills.
+MegaSoulhero and yet they hired her for both for Frozen
there's something called typecasting. There are times when a actor only wants to just ACT and not sing. Or vice versa (like in Emma Watson's case)
I mean for god's sakes the main antagonist is a queen, a step-mother, a witch, AND a dragon. Can't get more satirical than that.
I really, really like this movie, honestly.
I love what they did with it.
Ironically I was so upset by the ending as a child but now? I prefer her getting the guy from our world instead if her prince.
3:19 MY GOODNESS THAT LINE SUMS UP MY OPINION ON SO MANY TOPICS
0:22 when it's pulling back in that scene, I actually thought the movie was over when I was a kid.
That first line with the Brave Little Princess and the damsel in distress. That’s gold. But the rest of it is too much
Seriously cannot wait for the sequel! Grew up with this great movie!
Fun fact, the guy who plays Prince Edward is also Tom the Doughnut Lord in the Sonic movies.
This movie is really good and I love the satire in this movie
This one is so underrated.
Agreed
This is my Mom’s favorite movie !
On the damsel in distress stereotype:
- Snow White is already dead.
- Eric is actually a beast! Just realized that he really did save the day by himself in Little Mermaid. (2)
- Belle ultimately saves the beast in the end
- Aladdin and Jasmine are both involved in taking down Jaffar, but I suppose Aladdin did originally intend to rescue her, so I guess it counts. (3)
- Nala never needed no saving
- Pocahontas saves John Smith
- Esmerelda is saved in Hunchback I guess, but everyone had a damsel moment in that movie (4)
- Meg is saved by Hercules (5)
- Mulan saves China
- Tarzan saves Jane (6)
6/12 I'd say from the popular animated Disney films actually enforce that stereotype.
3:16 is exactly right and filmmakers today need to take note
stepmother not birth mother
I saw this in the cinema
Enchanted turns 15 today too!
Made $127.8 million and $340.4 million worldwide
It also pulled in a pretty damn big $93 million in domestic DVD/Blu-ray sales
Kevin Lima who did 'Tarzan' directed
I'm amazed it took a different approach by breaking away from most of Disney's fairytales being a satire
The animated sequences show the filmmakers' passion as storytellers of old but make the live action portions just as lively
My first introduction to Amy Adams who became the honorary Disney princess Giselle
It actually subverts and pokes fun at the tropes; falling in love and marrying instantly, life isn't always a fairy tale, true love has to be earned when you least expect it, the woman can be the hero and the man can be in danger from time to time, nobody really breaks into song in real life
It was a bold new direction for Disney princesses even Elsa from 'Frozen' took a few notes
The CG still holds up
This was also my first introduction to Idina Menzel
James Marsden is hilarious as the Prince, Patrick Dempsey as the divorce attorney/single father needing the magic back in life along with his daughter, and Susan Sarandon deliciously plays this villainess Narissa
So many references to other Disney works like Snow White, Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and most notably Sleeping Beauty even getting Jodi Benson (voice of Ariel) to cameo
The soundtrack is beautiful and I'm glad they brought in Alan Menken who's a traditional for many Disney movies' scores
Mature topics too like single parents and divorce
And the ballroom scene near the end is so well done in terms of being presented and giving a sweet, romantic vibe
The songs Ever After by Natasha Bedingfeld and So Close by John McLaughlin are the best numbers
It's incredible now they released the sequel on Disney +
0:56 Disney? Did you put that Wicked sign there?
I don't think so. Usually when films do NY shots they just roll with whatever Broadway advertisements are there.
It is funny considering that Idina Menzel is in this movie.
I’ve been dreaming of a true sequel.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T GUSH OVER THIS MOVIE AS A CINEMATIC MASTER PIECE! THANK YOU!
This movie reminds me of another film that came out 6 years before this was made Kate & Leopold. I loved Enchanted.
Finally it's out on Disney Plus this Friday since Disney Plus is 2 years old on Friday.
I've been with Disney Plus since then and the first film I wanted to watch was this but it wasn't on it. Yes I know I have this on DVD and Bluray but who cares I love this film.
I love this movie ❤️
0:33 "But the mother doesn't want them to marry and so banishers her..." that line had really poor editing
That wasn't 0:33.
I think the creators wanted to see what would happen if Disney magic mixed with modern Manhattan.
The way they satirize Disney movies here is like how you satirize early Nostalgia Critic videos in Christmas with the Kranks.
This movie came out the wrong year
Instead of wish I think Enchanted should've came out this year to celebrate 100 years of Disney
This was more subtle in being self aware than Frozen
I have to disagree with you on this one. In my opinion, this movie is brilliant. I think it's pretty obvious that it's satirizing old Disney princesses, not new ones, and it cracks me up. Yeah, it's not Citizen Kane, but it's so much better than it should have been. I have so say I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I wasn't expecting it to be so funny. It highlights all the ridiculous factors in old Disney fairytales perfectly. 8/10 for me.
2:09 You married someone you just met?!
Elsa is the first character to point out how stupid that actually is. (I think)
ReasyRandom No, Robert did
Absolute favorite movie as a kid
The 2D Animation just looks so beautiful! Did they have to be dragged into reality? Couldn't they just go to an animated New York City?
I think that wouldn't be as powerful to show on screen. Imagine a 2-D giselle in 2-D New York summoning birds and singing. It would just look.. Ordinary?
LAnite430 I suppose you're right. Hopefully, its sequel, Dis-enchanted will flesh out the animated world!
okay im watching this like a year later, which one was the next movie?
sonnic1995 Princess and the Frog
Oddeth Glez thank you
When I first heard Carrie singing ‘Ever After’ I cringed so hard I got physically ill.
So Enchanted should have been classified as strictly mocking the classic disney.
i love is movie ^^
This was my first Disney movie
This is my first Disney movie.
Do a Nostalgia Critic of this film
While I love the film, you hit spot on with the criticism and I think it applies to modern Princess films as well. EVERY princess film tries to "go against the status quo" but like, all of them are doing that so the status quo is subversion
As I understand it, the original idea for this movie happened before the Disney Renaissance was underway an got delayed and as a result they hadn’t really known what modern Disney Princess movies would look like when they made the parody
That’s very ironic, don’t you think? Many people going against the “status quo” only for that to be the new “status quo”.
Even America does this a lot; Smurfs, Fat Albert, Masters of the Universe, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Space Jam, even Samurai Jack technically.
man we are in middle of January and still getting disneyember .... how many more do you have by now?
He has 6 more to reupload.
+182punkbunny you guys realize this are from older years and he's just re-uploading them to this channel now right?
Dude did you see the superman returns poster behind the prince in part of the movie
To be fair Disneycember sounds much better than Disneyary...
boy that dragon the witch turned into sacred the shit out of me as a kid
My favorite scene of all of Disney, is when she gets the disgusting cockroaches, and diseased pigeons to help her clean the apartment. I never laughed so much watching a movie. The rest of the movie is perfectly passable.
I did kinda want the leads to just be platonic friends, who helped each other grow and learn, so they could take those lessons back to their more compatible relationships. The prince was happy and willing to date her, and his girlfriend wasn’t over demanding, and it would have been nice to subvert expectations by the leads not ending up together.
