Of course, when I was a kid playing this game, I didn't realize that Ru was getting stonkered before the mission. LOL Thanks for pointing that out, I almost spit up some spaghetti when you did.
I own this game. And what he doesn't mention is that the controls are god-awful. Not that the button-mapping is bad or anything. It's that the controls are incredibly sluggish. You feel like you are pushing the right & left buttons with all of your might when you try to turn in the canyon levels.
Daaamn, I can instantly see that this port is gameplay-wise superior to the PC version. In the PC version the controls always have the same frame rate as the FMV backgrounds (which means either too slow aiming or too fast overall gameplay) and the crosshair controls are 1. absolute and 2. sluggish (the stick position determines which point on the sceen the crosshair will slowly approach rather than its direction), that makes the game almost unplayable. Here the crosshair is actually much quicker than the FMV backgrounds (at least in the cockpit and on-foot sections) and you don't have that cockpit scrolling, making it even easier. Guess we ironically have to thank the digital controller and low end hardware for this.
Cool I wasn't sure at first if the canion was an actual 3d model or really bad video. What about the corridor where you shot ppl was that real-time 3d or video/screenshots + animated enemies? it was hard to tell. This reminds me of the 1996 game "surface tension" - it had similar graphics and you could destroy the terrain
The A-Wing is underrated, what about the B-Wing? The B-Wing is probably my favorite starfighter in Star Wars, not very mobile but lots of firepower. My real favorite is the 1969 Buick Electra, but that probably isn't considered cannon (does anyone even get that reference?) And why do so many people take offense at calling the A-T-A-Ts At-Ats, the rebel alliance often called them that in the games/books. Same thing with the tie-fighters being called eyeballs or squints (tie-interceptors).
Wow I remember playing this game back in the day on my Packard Bell 486SX 25MHz. I was amazed my computer was talking! haha. The typical PC game during those times were Hugo House of Horrors, Prince of Perisa, Loom, and Commander Keen. Having music played back in Midi was always a bonus. A game like this with FMV and digital voice overs was AMAZING! Although the controls were HORRIBLE! (on the PC at least...)
Never played this but the second one was a huge improvement. I remember it playing smoothly it on my Mac LC475, a machine that could barely run Doom well.
I used to play this on a Mac all the time as a kid. One time I got through that a-wing in the canyon part without taking any damage at all and I felt like I was king of the world. But the version I had seemed a lot faster and less choppy.
The game's controlls are a bit tricky, but this is the first Star Wars game I ever saw on a game console (Sega CD) that had a storyline which was at least in line with the movie. Unlike that one Famicom game were you fight Vader on the sandcrawler and when you beat him he turns into a fucking scorpion... WTF?
one of the first games i beat was rebel assault 2 for ps1. I remember when it first asked me to switch disks and i didnt know how to do it.. haha i put the second disk in on top of the first one already in.. needless to say i ended playing the last mission on disk 1 a few times till i figured it out... oh memories:)
You Should review Rebel Assault II that is an EPIC star wars game.. the sroty is awesome and well.. Factor5 do an awesome work for it. same to Rougue Squadron 1,2,3 your reviews are awesome. Keep it up!
I played this game a lot back in the day on my old Macintosh performa. Either it's my fuzzy memory, or I distinctly remember the PC/Mac version of this game had slightly better graphics. When I played, I could see what an enemy was supposed to be, here, you can barely see what the enemy looks like even if there were no green cross hairs. Those cross hairs are basically the only way you know when to fire at a target.
OH GOD I NEED TO SEE SOME REBEL ASSAULT II. PC or Mac version preferably, I found a large flightstick to be a great controller for it. The flightstick worked well with the point-and-click "shooting" sections and worked REALLY well with the flight sections
Oh man, the Sega CD Version of Rebel Assault aged pretty badly. Some of the backround fmv landscapes (especially the Death Star Trench Run) actually look like they belong on a Commodore C64 CD-ROM Drive. Well, of course such a thing never existed ;-) The Sega CD Version is missing one level from the PC-DOS Version. There was an extra level an Hoth where you fly a Snowspeeder through a cave shooting imperial probe droids.
@cyclo1224 Agreed, a lot of the younger gamers have no idea, how awesome it was, just to have games not on a cartage/floppy back in the day, and for there to be fully voiced actors. we surly have come along way :-)
@aapenjong Because Thai fighters are called kick boxers. TIE = Twin Ion Engine You could just as easy call them stop-sign-wings... Used in context: The Thai fighter ran the stop-sign-wing and got into a Crash Bandicoot with an AT AT "T-bone" Walker.
LOL. You talk but mouth not match words. The reviewer kind of reminded me of Duke Nukem there for some reason, lol. The good Duke Nukem, pre-forever. First time watching one of these reviews. Might have to subscribe.
@PorkchopSanderson I think you're on to something, but I think the gameplay is closer to Star Fox since it's on-rails. Nevertheless, the flying did influence the gameplay of that legendary game.
I dont know if it is really full motin video but, OK. If I were a Star Wars fan I would like this. But in 93 I was playing Monopoly on Genesis. Good looking game though.
@Curas1 Y-Wing has good heavy weapon capacity. A-wings are fast and nimble. X-wings are iconic, but nothing looks as cool as a B-Wing or TIE Advance to me.
i really liked this game as a kid but even then I hated the 3rd-person behind the ship flying levels, the controls were just so terrible. The 1st person cockpit-perspective levels were very fun though.
god... i owned this on the PC, first CD game I ever owned and played the hell out of it but boy...I don't remember any of those levels, specially the on foot bits.

I had Rebel Assault 2 for the PSX when it was new and really loved it.
1:36
"They're firing, AAAAAAAAAAA."
:D
This bring back memories. the hours mastering this game...
nice review man.
loved it on PC, but I don't think it's held up over time.
"You talk but mouth not match words..."
LMAO! XD

I remember playing this game in 1997. What a trip!
I still have this on PC CD-ROM. Man, it was like REALLY BEING IN THE MOVIE! WOOO!
I know you get these comments a lot, and this one is no different. You should review Rebel Assault 2. That is all. Great review as usual!
I love how the reticule locks onto the Storm Trooper's crotchel region when he's on foot @ 3:40
I used to have this for MS-DOS. Loved it to pieces. xD
I totally forgot about this game! I used to love playing it on the 3DO.
Don't forget about B-wings, Mark. Those things look awesome, even if you never see them in the movies.
I wonder if the 3DO version looks and plays any better....
A-Wings are my favorite, they just look sweet!
Oh crap! zombies flying A-wings 0:24, this is why I love videogames
I love this game! I remember when it came out! it was a huge deal!
@Chatpage both are addons for the Sega Genesis, but there are games that are both Sega CD/32x altough very few, in that case you would need both
I remember seeing the game when it was released, though I don't remember the platform, and it looked way better. So many years ago lol.
I would love to see a CGR review of Star Wars Rogue Leader on NGC
I always liked the Y-wing myself. And what's all this "upgrade to an X-wing"? When did the rebels establish a hierarchy in thier letter named ships?
I still have this on PC, though I have no idea how to get it working anymore. Shame.
Wow, I remember when this was cutting edge tech. Now I get holographic decoders from cereal boxes.
i have never seen a ad on youtube. what do they advertise?

I used to play this game a lot. Maybe i WILL pull it off the shelf when next I hook up the SEGA CD, I haven't in quite some time.
WTF?
Typcial Vader. ^^
they made a huge improvment from 93 to 95 with Full Throttle
one of the first games i beat was rebel assault 2 for ps1. God damn I remember this game on PC- I played it all the time when I was like, 5 or 6

I miss this TH-cam channel
OH GOD I NEED TO SEE SOME REBEL ASSAULT II.

Memories of this game =/= quality I'm seeing.
Dammit. XP
Damn right about the A-Wings!
Of all the FMV games released in 1992-1993, this is actually one of the better ones.
Wasn't this the game everybody bought a CD-drive on the PC for?
@IcarusMoonsight
That's intresting, the B wing. I had forgotten about it.
I'll have to go pull out my old return of the jedi tape and check it out.
Mark is such a nice reviewer, he can overlook most flaws. At least if it's Star Wars or Sega-related, and that means this game is in luck!
That's not a good thing, he needs to be more honest. This game is a disgrace.
I remember playing it on the PC, it was soooo much more fluid than on the Sega CD!
Rebel Assault 2 was the best though.
I don't care about Pat Heeman advertisements I want some Classic Game Room!
@MoarLolz What do you mean im wro have you eve played MW2 Before?
Rebel Assault 2 was the first game I ever played...
Hope you review the sequel.
I agree- A-Wings and B-Wings are awesome and need more credit!
i have this on pc now i want to install it again
Oh man, the Sega CD Version of Rebel Assault aged pretty badly. Some of the backround fmv landscapes (especially the Death Star Trench Run) actually look like they belong on a Commodore C64 CD-ROM Drive. Well, of course such a thing never existed ;-)
The Sega CD Version is missing one level from the PC-DOS Version. There was an extra level an Hoth where you fly a Snowspeeder through a cave shooting imperial probe droids.
Another game that cowers behind the might X-Wing and Tie Fighter games!
Wow this is practically the grandfather of Rogue Squadron.
Ohhhh, I loved that game, although I played it on PC...
@cyclo1224 Agreed, a lot of the younger gamers have no idea, how awesome it was, just to have games not on a cartage/floppy back in the day, and for there to be fully voiced actors. we surly have come along way :-)
A-wings don't get the respect they deserve? You fly those all the time in the Rogue Squadron series. Think you could eventually review those?
4:52 pc? or 3do?
I love the B-wing myself.
The game looks pretty good for its time.
@aapenjong
Because Thai fighters are called kick boxers.
TIE = Twin Ion Engine
You could just as easy call them stop-sign-wings... Used in context:

LOL. You talk but mouth not match words. The reviewer kind of reminded me of Duke Nukem there for some reason, lol. The good Duke Nukem, pre-forever. First time watching one of these reviews. Might have to subscribe.
This is the game that forced me to pack away my Amiga and get a gaming PC It just blew me away back in the day.
!!! i had this game on pc for DOS!
@PorkchopSanderson I think you're on to something, but I think the gameplay is closer to Star Fox since it's on-rails. Nevertheless, the flying did influence the gameplay of that legendary game.
@SuperGilberto1977 heard of ms-dos on old operating systems?
"you talk but mouth not match words" LOL
i still play this game to this day. Rebel assault 2 is way better and easier on the eyes.
Uhh...how about a Mortal Kombat/Crash Bandicoot/Army men rev?
You HAVE to do rebel assault 2 for Playstation. I can even send it to you!
I dont know if it is really full motin video but, OK. If I were a Star Wars fan I would like this. But in 93 I was playing Monopoly on Genesis. Good looking game though.
Good looking game? Do you live in the Bizarro World?
Yes! A-Wings FTW!
@cyclo1224 That would require more beer than even mark could drink.
this looks horrrriibbble compared to the pc version which actually looks quite nice even today
A-wings are for training. It'd be like talking about WWII planes and pissing your pants over a Curtiss P40
@Curas1
Y-Wing has good heavy weapon capacity. A-wings are fast and nimble. X-wings are iconic, but nothing looks as cool as a B-Wing or TIE Advance to me.
The number of times I crashed that A-Wing when I was six... that's the real reason I turned to drugs :(
remember playing this when it came out. had a hard time playing it because of how it controlled and how grainy it looked.
So I'm not the only one who liked the A-Wings the most?
@Chatpage They're two different addons for the same console.
I'm not sure my computer would be able to play this, it looks pretty next-gen.
lol.....if these were good graphics, how will graphics be in the fututre? will it look like a movie we control?
@thoraxtheimpaler09 I think he meant from Star Wars fans in general, not just cause there in various games.
five years is a very long time in the tech world.
awhhhh the thumbnail fooled me. i thought this was a review for Rogue Squadron
this game was awesome!
Man the PC version is waaaaaaaaaay better.
I played this a lot at the time. :)
if you like rebel assault review the one for ps1 & rouge squadron.
I have this for the DOS.
A-Wing is my favourite
I remember when this game came out. It was a big deal! ^_^
I remember Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on N64 and i heard (never played) that it was awesome game. Sound of laser cannons in Rebel Assault are so weak;)
i really liked this game as a kid but even then I hated the 3rd-person behind the ship flying levels, the controls were just so terrible. The 1st person cockpit-perspective levels were very fun though.
Why dosen't anyone like the Y wings ? They looked cool to me.
god... i owned this on the PC, first CD game I ever owned and played the hell out of it but boy...I don't remember any of those levels, specially the on foot bits.
A-Wing is the hit.
I grew up playing the PC version
you are correct sir. it's beaten by the second one.
