Thank you for including Dark Wizard. I’ve been shouting about that game from the rooftops for years, but no one seems to listen. So happy to hear something else talk about it. Another RPG worth mentioning is Vay. Great video.
I had that one, but never got into it. Never finished Vay either. I have both on my mental list of games to go back to again one day... Whenever I think of Vay I also think about 7th Saga on SNES for some reason. I HAVE gone back to that one several times and can never get through it without losing interest, but that's another one I owned and never completed. I guess the top down graphics and first person battles looked similar to Vay? Always have those both in mind at the same time. Wayyyy back in my list is Beyond the Beyond on PS1.... my first RPG on the system. Didn't get very far!
Holy Sh!t I just wanna say that I legit appreciate the fact that you used proper grammar at 3:45 by saying "it runs very choppily"... that's right, this IS correct because adverbs modify verbs, and "runs" is the verb while "choppily" is the adverb that is modifying the verb "runs". This is amazing, and so is your content. You deserve 1mill. subs now.
Wow, great work. I had the largest Sega CD collection of my peer group growing up, and you hit all the titles I would suggest, even Panic! Expanding the list a little more I'd include Vay and Dungeon Explorer, maybe Revengers of Vengeance for that crazy RPG mode, but for an overview list you hit everything.
How could he leave out Vay? I never finished the game as a kid because I didn’t grind enough to finish the end game. I’m going to find it and play it again soon.
wow only one SCD video? Never realized that. SCD did have have some gems, and that redbook audio is glorious! I've downloaded a lot of rando SCD soundtracks because the music is so good.
@@cheek077 I especially like the music of stage 3 or 4 I don't remember. in which you go along a kind of highway and there are gas stations on the sides. that music is hypnotic. The Sega CD was great. I remember getting it fm my older brothers friend and being impressed by the videos. Sonic CD and Lunar were impressive. The Sega CD was the first console that I played that didn’t use cartridges.
Sega CD is a vibe, an ephemeral feeling. There's an excitement I get from it that isn't the same as old game systems. PC Engine/TG16 had that mesh of 16 bit graphics and frequently amazing music you almost never get outside of some modern indie titles.
What’s great about the Xbox 360 version is that it has widescreen support, the original intro and outro animation done by Toei, and you can swap between English and Japanese soundtracks
No love for the Sega CD versions of Ecco The Dolphin? The music on them (and the Q Sound) completely made the game more immersive. As I recall, the graphics were also slightly enhanced.
Yeah, what a mistake making that thing the pack-in game. Think that was only on the second model though. I had the first model which came with a bunch of stuff. Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective (showed off video and speech which was cool at the time), Sol-Feace, which was a letdown because after the animated intro with voiceovers, which blew me away, the rest of the game was nothing that you wouldn't see in a normal Genesis game... it was a pretty good shooter though, so it was okay. Also got a 4-in1 Genesis CD. Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, and Columns. Just standard genesis games, but a pretty nice collection of good stuff there. I spent a ton of time on that CD. Then I was at a used game shop and the clerk said "hey do you like RPGs?". I said "yes", and she popped Lunar into the Sega CD I was playing stuff on. Bought that, never having even heard of it before, and discovered that the Sega CD had some really good RPGs on it.... I got tons of use out of that thing. For Sewer Shark, just refer to the AVGN review, because it's pretty spot-on.
I played it most of the way through in teh late 90's and found it sort of dry and grindy compared to the SNES Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2 or the Final Fantasys. Just ran out of gas for me.
If anyone was curious, if you own a SNES flash cart you can actually play Road Blaster FX on the Super Nintendo since there's a port of it called "Super Road Blaster" online.
I remember when I asked for Popful Mail, youtube says it's been 3 years, which is not as bad as I feared, especially with what you said in the intro :p I think it should be mentioned that most Working Design games have patches that you can download on the internet that revert most of the "questionable" balance change they did when localizing the games, making for a less grindy experience.
8:24 giving enemies stun protection really sucks though as it slows the pace of the game to not repeatedly bash enemies. Zelda would suck if I couldn't rapidly attack.
@@JohnnyProctor9 The game hasn't been translated. From what I get with my rusty japanese the story seems to be the same, but the graphics and the controls are worse.
@@Akinohotarubi - From what I've seen and tried though, the entire level layout seems to be different...I'd like to see a review from someone with the patience to play through it, and this dude seems to review quite a few Japanese games.
One of my favorites was AH-3 Thunderstrike. I was hoping to see how it held up the memories of my youth, but my personal Sega CD has succumbed to capacitor rot, and I haven't been sufficiently motivated to seek out repair or replacement. Silpheed was also a favorite of mine, though I was never able to actually beat the final boss before getting annihilated by its screen-spanning laser attack.
I know this is a very specific genre that most don't like but I remember playing Monkey Island on SegaCD. It was definitely the worst port of the game but the first time it was on a console. One of my favourite games as a kid
Always great to see a pro-Sega CD video! I owned most of these, and Snatcher is one of my all-time favorites, and probably helps I legitimately believed FMV might be the wave of the future (how could graphics look any more realistic 😂).
A Sega CD video from the Shining Force of video game reviewers on TH-cam. I'll definitely have to get Final Fight CD sometime. Fixes all the problems with the SNES version, and might make it a more worthy rival to Streets of Rage 2.
Great video, Snes Drunk. Thanks for the good recommendations. By the way, I' m Tollban -the one who asked you to review Equinox-, only with another account. Thanks for being always here. You remind me of another life I used to have. Thank you.
Vay had a rather unusual story, and a weird, but interesting soundtrack. It's been awhile since I've taken on the role of prince Sandor. I may just have to do so again.
Snatcher is really good, it has such a good aesthetic especially if you grew up in the late 80s early 90s. I think Hideo Kojima once said Snatcher and Policenauts were his favorite games and he felt were his personal best games. I always wish he would have made another one like this for GBA or DS.
I mean at that point though, why not just play the arcade version? It's equally as easy to emulate it as the Sega CD version, and there's plenty of ports of it to modern consoles.
@Philip Bolin Google, "Final Fight Sega CD Pyron color hack". He's done color hacks for other games. You can probably find all of them on romhacking.net.
I strongly prefer the original Sega CD version of Lunar, it has a subtle and sublime charm that was lost both in EB and its later remakes. It was already complete.
I agree completely, it had more challenging dungeons, better cut scenes (though not as many), and better sound mix than the ps1 version. My dad sold all my RPGs when I left home for college, Lunar is the one that I miss most.
I'm very happy that you mentioned Panic! on his list. Though if I could only add one game to this list as a 100% must play, it would certainly be Mansion of Hidden Souls.
I remember Mansion of Hidden Souls being talked about in Nintendo Power as a SNES CD game... I don't think I ever played it on the Sega CD for more than a few minutes.
Was kind of surprised Earthworm Jim Special Edition wasn't mentioned. The extras make it worth checking out, such as the new stage, improved music and how some stages have changed their appearance a bit.
You picked some good ones. I also suggest trying Robo Aleste, Jurassic Park CD, Spider-Man VS the Kingpin CD. And the multi-console ports of Mickey Mania CD, Earthworm Jim CD, and Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure CD which have greatly expanded sound and extra levels!
From the list I owned Final Fight CD and Silpheed back in the day. How much I regret having sold Final Fight (sniff). I loved "Dune 2" for the Sega CD (I was totally hooked). I know it was available in other platforms by the voice dialogs on Sega CD made it a more immersive experience I think.
I know you didn't want to have more shmups on the list, but Robo Aleste, Sol-Feace and Devastator really are must haves on the limited Sega CD library imo. I also remember liking that Spiderman vs Kingpin game
This may be anecdotal, but having grown up during the heyday of the Sega CD, your impression of the Sega CD was pretty much the norm. It was constantly portrayed as the console of crappy FMV games. It's a real shame because the console has some major cult hits. A choosy collector can actually build up a respectable library of games for the console just by tuning out all of those Digital Pictures/TruVideo releases. I found that Sega CD is one of the more interesting failures in gaming history as it's actually worth revisiting.
No matter how badly they crashed and burned Sega was always interesting. The 90's were very imaginative, with Nintendo and Sega giving no "f" about the perceived rules of video entertainment. In the end, the best video game rivalry of all time made the consumers the real winners.
Honestly, it's kinda a tour de force you just made. I mean, giving a sharp efficient and kimd overview of a dozen sega cd games in a handfull of minutes... Even sega lord x could ve proud of you. Thanks mate. It's just pure joy and I dicovered some stuff completely new to me.
"Earthworm Jim: Special Edition", "Mickey Mania" and "Rise of the Dragon" are also worth playing on the Sega CD and Sega CD ports of the two "Ecco" games boast a fantastic soundtrack. Shame that so many good-to-excellent titles on the system got overshadowed by all the FMV crap.
Saturn had a lot of good games but it sucked unless you are REALLY into fighting games... Probably one of the greatest fighting game line-ups (if you include Japan) but otherwise the library is quite thin. Dreamcast, which will always be one of my favorite systems, had a much better library within 2 years than the Saturn ever had.
Can you dig it? Mega CD was cool. Silpheed for the time was pretty stunning and did demonstrate what the upcoming SNES CD could potentially mean for vastly bigger and technically superior sequels to mario and zelda, etc...then they fucked Sony over 😑😬
Eternal Chamoions was a great fighting game! Totally under appreciated and had a fun concept of bringing “champions throughout time.” Teleporting to this tournament before their ultimate demise like Rhamsesll, or a cat burglar during the 30’s and 40’s, Amazon warrior etc. super fun game. As far as a really difficult game Dracula Unleashed was super difficult. The one game I could never beat with my best friend we would rent that game and work on it for 3 days and never get off the first disc of a two disc game.

Great system for people who had good taste in games at the time and could find resources to find those games. Bad system for people who bought FMV games thinking they would be fun, with a few exceptions that got a mention here.
I'd just go to the local used game store and try stuff out. I remember getting Eternal Champions CD for like $5 at K-Mart, at a time when PSX and Saturn and maybe even N64 by then reigned supreme and you couldn't find new Sega CD games anywhere. Pretty nice score.
@@anonamatron Many Wal-Marts had NBA Jam for Sega CD for years into 32-bit era for some reason. I know a lot of Saturn Collectors bought them for $3 there to replace their broken cases. Pretty decent game for $3 though.
The FMV on sega CD is what gives it its charm for me. Games like wire head and corpse killer were so cool to me for some reason. The FMV was just the coolest thing to me for some reason. I used to own 2 copies of snatcher and im an idiot for getting rid of them. Also rise of the dragon was one of the best games.
Damn!! I never used the hot line for those but dang was it tricky to figure some of it out. Rise of the dragon was the worse since you could mess up and not even know it and keep playing. Willy Beamish would sometimes freeze up so I once got to a part that I couldn't pass because I thought the game froze up when it didn't lol. Definitely two great games. I would also had the secret of monkeys island to that list.
I saw this suggested after watching another video and thought "Oh is that from one of my other gaming channels, because snesdrunk definitely never talks about Sega CD ever." Glad you're branching out a bit! Keep it up!
Fun fact: Toei Animation did the animated footage of the game. [From wiki]: It was animated under the guidance of Yoshinobu Inano, who also directed or key-animated such films such as Gundam: Char's Counter Attack, Macross: Do You Remember Love?, and The Transformers: The Movie. It was animated using 15,000 hand-painted cels to produce over 30 minutes of animation. Game director Yoshihisa Kishimoto, who previously worked on Cobra Command, later directed the arcade version of Double Dragon, where the car from Road Blaster can be seen inside the Lee brothers' garage at the start of the game. Also in the footage of Road Blaster, we can see at the beginning of the gameplay the chopper of Cobra Command/Thunder Storm arcade.

That opening cut scene from Vay is so awesome.
Vay was another great one. I'm super glad he touched on Lunar though. Amazing story.
wow only one SCD video? Never realized that. SCD did have have some gems, and that redbook audio is glorious! I've downloaded a lot of rando SCD soundtracks because the music is so good.
Batman Returns soundtrack is epic.
I guess to make up for the lackluster platformer levels. Driving were still lit.
@@cheek077 I especially like the music of stage 3 or 4 I don't remember. in which you go along a kind of highway and there are gas stations on the sides. that music is hypnotic. I was listening to all the music from mega cd to include them in a video dedicated to mega cd and my favorites are the Alshark and Sangikushi 3 ones
in my channel I have a video of 5 hours of my favorite mega cd music, watch it and tell me what you think about the selection. a greeting
The Sega CD version of hook had great music. I just suck because I can't beat the forest level.
The Sega CD was great. I remember getting it fm my older brothers friend and being impressed by the videos. Sonic CD and Lunar were impressive. The Sega CD was the first console that I played that didn’t use cartridges.
Sonic CD has realy good level design its the only Sonic game I really like the different versions of the levels is like Zelda on SNES
Eternal Champions Challenge From The Darkside was a great fighter on the Sega CD
Lords of Thunder is flawless. The music alone was incentive enough to keep pushing forward. The Turbo CD version was just as great
The only Sega CD game I ever played was Sewer Shark, I've got the whole "TWELVE SIX NINER" thing stuck in my head forever as a result
I remember playing a game called Vay... that was a lot of fun!
IKR, I thought that was awesome with the translation Working Designs did!
Never thought i'd see a Bard play so bad!
I remember when I asked for Popful Mail, youtube says it's been 3 years, which is not as bad as I feared, especially with what you said in the intro :p
I think it should be mentioned that most Working Design games have patches that you can download on the internet that revert most of the "questionable" balance change they did when localizing the games, making for a less grindy experience.
8:24 giving enemies stun protection really sucks though as it slows the pace of the game to not repeatedly bash enemies. Zelda would suck if I couldn't rapidly attack.
How about reviewing the Popful Mail Super Famicom game now?
@@JohnnyProctor9 The game hasn't been translated. From what I get with my rusty japanese the story seems to be the same, but the graphics and the controls are worse.
@@Akinohotarubi - From what I've seen and tried though, the entire level layout seems to be different...I'd like to see a review from someone with the patience to play through it, and this dude seems to review quite a few Japanese games.
I'm glad to see Dark Wizard getting some of the attention it deserves.
great soundtrack in this one also.
Still one of the best SRPGs ever
Wow. Talk about a game bringing me back to childhood. Haven't played it since 1995.
Being isolated for a whole year, it is good to hear "I hope you have a great rest of your day". Very uplifting 😃
Great games here. You should definitely do a follow up because there is more to explore.
I feel like 80% of these games were new to me.
Nice to see a video highlighting how many gems the Sega CD had!
Great video my dude - I've always thought the Sega CD looks cool but never tried it out myself!
Night Trap is totally worth playing today if you are looking for laughs with your friends.
Someone: Why is snatcher so expensive?
Seller: Nano machines son
Great video, Snes Drunk. Thanks for the good recommendations. By the way, I' m Tollban -the one who asked you to review Equinox-, only with another account. Thanks for being always here. You remind me of another life I used to have. Thank you.
You didn't mention Vay btw, pretty good game on segaCD
Vay was awesome glad someone else mentioned it too
Vay had a rather unusual story, and a weird, but interesting soundtrack. It's been awhile since I've taken on the role of prince Sandor. I may just have to do so again.
I could never really seem to get into that one...it felt kind of like a generic Lunar to me, same style but more mediocre and less interesting.
Snatcher is really good, it has such a good aesthetic especially if you grew up in the late 80s early 90s. I think Hideo Kojima once said Snatcher and Policenauts were his favorite games and he felt were his personal best games. I always wish he would have made another one like this for GBA or DS.
there's a great color patch hack for Final Fight CD that improves the color by a lot! makes it look alot like the arcade
I mean at that point though, why not just play the arcade version? It's equally as easy to emulate it as the Sega CD version, and there's plenty of ports of it to modern consoles.
There’s also a hack to play the arcade version with the Sega CD soundtrack
@Philip Bolin Google, "Final Fight Sega CD Pyron color hack". He's done color hacks for other games. You can probably find all of them on romhacking.net.
@Philip Bolin here u go th-cam.com/video/ISnASLSrCq0/w-d-xo.html
Great video as usual. One of my favorites was Dark Wizard. Great music and fun to upgrade your units.
happy to see more videos here :)
Been M.i.a. with bad stomach issues but hopefully better now. Nice to get back to my routine and thanks for always keeping up the good vibes 😃✌👍
Awesome choices. I had a lot of these games in my collection. Great memories
My favorite Sega CD games:
Dark Wizard, Sol Feace, Ecco the Dolphin, Demolition Man, and... Sewer Shark
Sol Feces, lol! 😆
You forget the definitive version of Earthworm Jim, complete with an extra stage.
The Genesis version also had that extra stage, but sadly, the SNES version did not have it.
@@coraltwining7830
There was a stage exclusive to the Sega CD version.
@@jwill7998 In addition to the one on the Genesis?
@@coraltwining7830 Yes, can confirm. The Sega CD has an exclusive level, plus all the Genesis content.
Was kind of surprised Earthworm Jim Special Edition wasn't mentioned. The extras make it worth checking out, such as the new stage, improved music and how some stages have changed their appearance a bit.
Nice selection! Some good hidden gems to check out.
Thank you for correctly pointing out Snatcher as the best game on Sega CD. The RPGs are also very memorable.
I grew up in this era, (playing mostly SNES) and I never realized that the Sega CD actually had good games. I'm impressed. Nice Video!
Kind of disappointed that you didn’t include Eternal Champions Challenge from the Dark Side.
this game is awesome, thx to bring him up
You picked some good ones.
I need a Sega Saturn recommendation video. All I have is Nights and Panzer Dragoon
Check out game sack channel. They have a video about the Sega Saturn. It's 20m I think, and it showcases a lot of games
oh those were fun ones, also Sega Rally ntb
Dragon Force!
I "digged" this video :)
Thanks for reminding me of Road Blaster FX!! Very cool game.
Robo Aleste was awesome on the Sega CD
I never got to play that one. Sadly, I was never Aleste'd as a child.
Nice overview of good games for Sega CD
Can’t for the Sega Saturn Games worth playing!
I'm glad you highlighted a few FMV titles, even if they are animated ;)
What about 32x? Knuckles Chaotix doesn't look bad for me
It has considerably less good stuff than the Sega CD
@@oscarzxn4067 It may look random, but every time I think about 32x I wonder if battetoads arcade could run on it
love your content dude. you are like one of the only retro game youtube channels i trust lol
Where is Earthworm Jim Special Edition???
true, just realized I saw Lunar 7:50, though Earthworm Jim was a difficult game, but still fun. Hope you got the comic from the indiegogo (it is expensive but nice, though I didn't bother with sequel).
@@MrVariant For my Money, Out of all of the mascot platformers that tried to make a quick buck off Sonic's popularity [i.e. Bubsy], Earthworm Jim was the best of the bunch.
@@MrVariant I have not gotten the comic... Yet
@@joeyparkhill8751 true, Bubsy had a remake yet earthworm jim didn't. Shame rocket knight remake took away all the colors/sound that made the original awesome, just like tmnt reshelled.
This was fantastic. I knew nothing about any of these games and this was surprisingly interesting. You're definitely one of my favorite TH-cam channels. I've never once not enjoyed one of your videos. They're all great.
Another entertaining and well produced video! Thanks a million as usual SegaDrunk and have a great rest of your day too. :D
I would say Lunar is the best. Lunar 1 & 2 tho on PS1, holy shit is it an upgrade.
Lunar was fantastic
I always liked the Sega CD originals the best. There's a charm that's missing in the remakes... though they're definitely not bad either.
Eternal champions for it's time, had so much content and was actually a good fighting game.
You could easily do a Part 2 for the Sega CD, and you could probably squeeze out a Part 3. Great vid, drunk!
Snatcher is an awesome experience, i remember seeing someone giving roses to this game and OMG, it really deserves them, the game is really something
The Adventures of Willy Beamish and Rise Of The Dragon were my go-to games. I racked up such a huge phone bill calling hint lines
@@buckroger6456 Monkey Island is fantastic but I've heard the SCD port is terrible.
I saw this suggested after watching another video and thought "Oh is that from one of my other gaming channels, because snesdrunk definitely never talks about Sega CD ever."
Glad you're branching out a bit! Keep it up!
That road blaster FX clip reminded of the DBZ episode where Goku learns to drive. Looks pretty good!!
Great vid as per usual!!
Lunar silver star story and Willy Beamish were two games I could not stop playing
Love Willy Beamish!! I got all my friends at school who had a Sega CD hooked on that game.
Dark Wizard is amazing. Admittedly the music is awesome, however the cutscenes, story, battle layout and character class development is outstanding. Its one of the most deep RPGs I have ever played.
