Why I don't have a copy of this is a complete mystery to me. I have all the X-Wing games, the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter games, but not this one. Fantastic freaking game, as all the games in the series. So cool to side with the Empire. *heads to Amazon seeking boxed copy... success!* Great review, too! Was never any doubt, just saying :)
I review any and all generations of video games. It just so happens that very few people review classic PC & DOS games, so I hope to fill that gap. As for finding a gamer soul mate, I met my wife while working at Sierra On-Line back in the 90s...so she kinda knew what she was getting herself into! It's important to find a partner who appreciates your passions. I love video games...and she is big into painting & art. We give each other time & space to pursue those passions.
From starting out with a basic fighter with the short "can't get hit" missions to cruising long distances to engage in big battles with multiple objectives and story line events occurring in them in a decked out advanced, I had some of my most fun and nerdy moments with this game.
@brementer - I just looked at the manual again, and there are over 35 keys used in combat, with just 7 keys for quickly setting your engine speed! Most of them you may never touch...but it does give you the feeling of incredible control over your space craft!
From what I remember The collectors edition of this mid 1990's era game also had improved more detailed rendered graphics and also more missions than the original version. Anyway you gave an excellent detailed review MetalJesusRocks.
I played the hell out of this when I was a kid. It was one of my all time favorites. If Lucasarts can bring back Monkey Island 1 and 2 they can sure as shit bring back Tie Fighter.
@testdummy22 - A official re-release from LucasArts for modern PCs would be nice. The game was fairly easy to get running in DOSBOX, but my USB joystick took some serious tweaking to get right. I almost had to give up...
Nice vid MJR! Thanks for bringing back some great memories My story is that I bought my first IBM PC in mid '92 because I had heard LucasArts was about to make an X-Wing simulator for PC. I knew I had to have it so I bought all the necessary equipment (including a CH Products flight stick) and waited. Bought the game day one and it's still one of my fondest video gaming memories. I played X-Wing endlessly. It was the type of game you'd call in sick to work for just so you could keep playing. T
The music and sound is amazing on this! Even though the soundtrack is MIDI, it's original music influenced by the Imperial Death March music, and on top of that, the music changes according to the condition of the mission (iMUSE!), and it really added to the immersion. "Mission critical ship under attack! Mission critical ship shields down!" Great times! The best thing is you get to say "you rebel scum" as you blow away X-Wings and those annoying A-wings! :D
Man, so many memories of my best friend and I playing this game all night in the summer of '96. One of those things where it was just part of a very specific, awesome time of my life. Still have my copy in the drawer under my bed all these years later. :D It's a real shame Disney shut down Lucasarts. These games could have had an awesome revival with the new films but I don't know if I'd trust anyone else to develop them.
Highly underrated game. Throw in Civ2, Daggerfall, Mechwarrior2, SuperCastlevania IV on the SNES & Goldeneye on the N64 and you've got my gaming experience in the 90s wrapped up. You learn to juke & weave like a madman when you fly without shields, but it is so satisfying when your crappy little TIE takes out a corvette. I recall a mission with Vader flying with you. Shooting him didn't work, but you could power up your shields & ram his ship with your own to chew away at his shields. Being a perfectionist/completionist led to playing missions over and over in order to accomplish the goals for the Secret Order. At least they gave you a sick tattoo for your dedication.
This game was righteous! My favorite gaming memory was playing Tie Fighter. Was twisting and turning to get away from an attacking X-Wing and somehow managed to get IN BETWEEN the nacelles of a passing Y-Wing, cut my speed and blew the crap out of it as it pulled away! I'm not even joking, I was absolutely stunned I survived. I noticed that Buffy riff at the end of this video....well played sir!
I've been wondering for years why Lucas don't want to release a HD version of this classic, it would be sooo cool. Awesome review by the way Metal Jesus, love your videos!
Great great review. These mid-90s CD-Rom and DOS titles are a bit unfamiliar to me (I was playing Genesis/SNES) but it's nice to see such an in-depth look at something very foreign to me. Kudos! \m/
Another awesome review of a classic game. I played X-wing v. Tie Fighter, looks very similar to this. Definite thumbs up for a Wing Commander mention! I loved WC 2 with the speech pack. I think it was something like 14 floppy discs total, but sounded great when hooked up to my Dad's guitar amp. Huzzah for classic Lucasarts and Sierra games - more please if you have time!
I want to play this again. I stil have my Sidewinder joystick LOVED this game. It's one of the first that I got back around 2000. I plan on getting back into PC gaming soon.
Great review. I remember this was the hottest game to have on PC back in 9th grade. I totally got a pirated copy from my homeboy (we didn't call it pirating back then, we called it trading). Amazing game. I have it (a more legal copy), I'll have to go back to it after seeing this review. Thank you for another great video, MJR!
One of the best games and series ever. I bought every single one of the series (and still have them). Definitely have the urge to give them another go now. Great review, thanks.
I didn't have a PC until '99, but I've played this game a bit and a bunch of other PC games in the 80s and 90s at friends. Later I got X-Wing Alliance, which I loved. I wished I had a PC in the early 90s when X-Wing came out. I just had an Amiga 500 (and a C64). I'm mostly interested in PC and Commodore 64 stuff (or any other computers), but I enjoy your other videos too. Keep up the good work.
Oh man, I used to play this at a friend's house. I sucked at it, but it was awesome! And coming from a NES/SNES background, it may have been the first game I can remember that really talked to me. I was blown away!
best part about these games was, you had one powersource you had to divide between engines, shields or weapons. I had presets when attacking certain targets. It helped when you had an advanced analoguestick with tons of buttons you could assign.
I have that same Vader's Tie Fighter toy, as well as all the other ones in that line. I loved this game even more than X-Wing. The MIDI soundtrack really brings me back.
@AKBeazBoi - I am 6 foot 4. Just tall enough to bang my head on low ceilings if I'm not careful. But that's why I always wear a helmet while drinking beer!
I'm currently playing this on pc obviously and the surprising part I find out is that the PS4 remote work perfectly on it instead of the joystick old fashion way so console players will be able to play this on pc with PS4 remote what a relief to play this again
I love this game when I was a kid, the idea of making a game where you play the "bad guy" is such a great idea. there was another game that had a very similar idea mobile suit gundam zeonic front, a game that has a strategy/tactical feel to it.
So there's this website called www.gog.com which stands for good ol games which just 2 days ago released tie fighter and x-wing for the pc. You can buy the game for 9.99 on their website.
Nice review! I remember when I was like 7 or 8 years old and I loved to play this game. I have got it as a present along with Rebel Assault II, which in comparison was like ... WTF??! My next Star Wars spaceship games were, many years later, ROgue Squadron for the N64 and the Rogue Leaders for Game Cube. Good games, but not as deep and rich like Tie Fighter when it comes to strategy , controls, customization ...
Finaly, some one did a TIE Fighter reviwe. The only thing is that you place The game around the Thrwan trilogy. Those books take place 5 years after RotJ. The TIE Fighter game takes place,as you say, after the Battle of Hoth. There is a 3rd game in the Star Wars combat spacesim called Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance. It take place between TESB and leads right in to the Battle of Endor. Great reviwe, just needed to correct the placement of the games.
Excellent review to reminisce one favourite game of my childhood. I remember replaying missions again and again to keep my pilot records missile hit statistics at 100% and laser hit over 90%. No easy task when trying to keep those pesky a-wings and tie advanceds in my crosshairs :)
Dude all I can say is thanks for reminding me why I should buy games for my PC especially Tie Fighter. Thanks for reviewing a cool game from my childhood :) I think my top 5 Star Wars games are 5) Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 4) X-Wing Alliance 3) Jedi Academy 2) The Force Unleashed and at 1) Tie Fighter.
Just an FYI if anyone is interested you can get the Star wars X-Wing bundle we can close TIE fighter on steam and it's around $8 Just wanted to let you know Thank you for your content Metal Jesus and I hope you're having a great day sir God bless you and your family God bless you Jeremy Scruggs
Nice review, man! Very well shot and edited. I actually have the collector's CD of this game for DOS. I currently run it on my Android tablet, mostly because I can, and partly because my PC installation is being a dick. :P All things considered, though , the game is great, but very challenging, even punishing in spots.
The game is actually set during the period between Empire and Jedi. While Thrawn DOES make an appearance, this is set many years before Heir to the Empire happens. The final mission of the game takes place at the same time as Endor.
Sir, you have just reviewed my absolute favorite game. I miss playing that so much! So hard to find a system to play it on! DOSBox doesn't seem to play it that well.
i think that x wing and tie fighter and dark forces maybe star wars rebellion were some of my favorites to play way back then and maybe empire at war series
Remember how LucasArts re-made the Monkey Island games for XBLA and I think PSN? They said at the time they wanted to bring more classic LA games to the consoles. How do we get support for the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series?? That would be awesome!
I was a Sophmore in High school in '99 when we bought our first computer. The guy at Circuit City (remember them? haha) told me I NEEDED this game. He was right...my God was he right.
I had X Wing and X Wing vs Tie Fighter as a kid. I wish Lucas Arts would re release it on a digital distribution website, since I can't get either one to work on Windows 7. Other than that the best Star Wars games are either KOTOR 1&2 or the Dark Forces saga
I thought LucasArts did an amazing job on their Star Wars flight sims. Xwing vs. Tie Fighter was my favorite. The reason I feel these title are BETTER than the Wing Commander series is because I always felt like I was sitting in a stationary ball in space with the Wing Commanders, but I actually felt movement in the Tie Fighter series.....does that make sense? Big fan!
Hi Jesus, do you know which game in this series features on-foot sequences? I'd love to play it again. Not proper on-foot sequences like in Rogue Squadron, but on-rails sequences where you can only pop up from cover and shoot.

what about x wing alliance? more polish and a great game, I see tons on x wing and tie fighter but no one mentions alliance? I have the original games but not had the chance to play them yet like I did the later one; are the originals better?
+Chris Chatterje-Doody The X-wing Alliance is definitely the best from these. It is better than X-wing fighter/TIE fighter in every aspect (graphics, gameplay, story, possibilities, ...)
XWA was great with its updated engine but TIE Fighter's storytelling and gameplay was tighter. It was also more consistently challenging, especially on hard. There is an XWA upgrade project with improved models and textures (totally worth playing if you're a fan) and I believe someone ported the TIE Fighter levels to it a few years ago. TIE Fighter Total Conversion I think it was called. Not sure whatever happened to it but I got it working a few years ago and had great fun playing through the original TF levels in hi-rez.
Tie Fighter had more intrigue. I also preferred the he individual cockpit line out for each craft in Tie Fighter as opposed to the projected HUD in Alliance which is the same for each craft. Details matter.
OMG! For this game i bought a PC! With a Gravis Ultrasound soundcard :) I've stil got a CD version at home. Box from this edition proudly lies on the shelf. Fabulous game! One of the best ever :)
...the emperor will be impressed...i loved every single tattoo i got in this game...beats x wing by a long shot...not because of the mechanics but because of the feel you have while playing...
No trouble playing the CD Rom Collector's CD on XP with all bells and whistles. Just Google "Tie Fighter on XP", quite a few sites give directions. Make sure it's not the Windows version that came with "X-Wing vs Tie Fighter Collection" which changes the outcome and soundtrack, for worse, though the graphics are better. Now to try on Win 7!
I'm really surprised Lucas Arts never made an MMO space combat game like EVE online, which sets the standard for strategy-oriented space combat. I think we as star wars fans expect to see so so much in all aspects of media, we become easily disappointed when all of our ideas are not explored to fruition.
I don't remember if Thrawn was a traitor and had what he deserves. But I remember perfectly how my fellas just shouted "Stop the charade" and then boom! every imperial ship was against me.
Why I don't have a copy of this is a complete mystery to me. I have all the X-Wing games, the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter games, but not this one. Fantastic freaking game, as all the games in the series. So cool to side with the Empire. *heads to Amazon seeking boxed copy... success!*
Great review, too! Was never any doubt, just saying :)
I'm currently playing this now and it works perfectly well with a PS4 remote and I love this game and I missed it so much ♥️

I love watching all of these older videos. There's a wide variety from reviews to game pickups. Really cool
Not only are the emperor and Vader your bosses,
you even got eventual-grand-admiral Thrawn on your side,
how awesome is that?!
@brementer - I just looked at the manual again, and there are over 35 keys used in combat, with just 7 keys for quickly setting your engine speed! Most of them you may never touch...but it does give you the feeling of incredible control over your space craft!

great review. id like to see a review of rebel assault 2 with the first person lightsaber duels. such an obscure and unique game.

I would spend night at best friends house and play this all night long!! As soon as heard that music it put right back in 1995!! One of the best
I have that same Vader's Tie Fighter toy, as well as all the other ones in that line. I loved this game even more than X-Wing. The MIDI soundtrack really brings me back.

@nightwing245 - I've been on a Joss Whedon kick lately through Netflix Watch Now and I thought I would throw out a little MJR tribute.

I just busted out this game again. It's pretty awesome. I can't remember if I finished it or not, so trying to do it now.
@srbclarke dude, you should use the DOSbox emulator, it runs old games marvelously
I was a Sophmore in High school in '99 when we bought our first computer. The guy at Circuit City (remember them? haha) told me I NEEDED this game. He was right...my God was he right.
i remember playing all these games at the age of 7 / 8 and it was completely mind blowing ! thanks to my Geek uncle !! ^^
nice. like the greedo cameo at the end ahaha
I had X Wing and X Wing vs Tie Fighter as a kid. I wish Lucas Arts would re release it on a digital distribution website, since I can't get either one to work on Windows 7.

I replay this masterpiece every two or three years. Inner Circle of the Order FTW!
Superb game, could you do a look at Rebel Assault?
Still have my DOS version of this game CIB. Best Star Wars game ever!
do you know if there are companies that reproduce pc box games, I mean the physical box with game and instructions?..that would be awesome!
Never got the chance to play Tie Fighter, but I'm a huge fan of X-Wing Alliance. Man, I played the heck out of that game back in the day :)
Finally a new video! :)
I heard the remake with the new graphics engine has features missing.
Hi Jesus, do you know which game in this series features on-foot sequences? I'd love to play it again. Not proper on-foot sequences like in Rogue Squadron, but on-rails sequences where you can only pop up from cover and shoot.
Dark Forces and Rebel Assault 1 & 2 had on-foot missions.
@MetalJesusRocks pleeeeease! dig up "no pun intended" & review that old Nightmare on Elm Street game for the Commodore 64 or PC its weeeeeid!
with compatibility issues with games on older computers, how do you recommend playing the older DOS games? Do you just have an old Pentium 2 running Win98?
Haha! I've been watching through Angel again recently (spin-off to my all-time favourite show, Buffy) so seeing that ending was pretty funny :)
I've not read any SW novels or comics, but when I heard that Thrawn was being dumped from the EU by Disney, I knew how those readers felt.
Those cut scenes really worked so well to tie (!) the game into the SW universe on the big screen, I was displeased to hear about it being dumped.
Not true. Thrawn is in Star Wars: Rebels on Disney XD.
Paul Turner imo rebels isn’t that good and they still dumped most of Thrawns stories
This game topped most "best game of all time" charts for about 8 years after release. Ah back in the day when a flight stick was just a normal thing to have.
Played the 94 version back in the days. I’ve just bought the 1998 special edition on steam and found out the graphics have been improved 😬
what about x wing alliance? more polish and a great game, I see tons on x wing and tie fighter but no one mentions alliance? I have the original games but not had the chance to play them yet like I did the later one; are the originals better?

Bring it back on modern consoles yes!
In my top 10 of all time. Has to be the one with the context aware soundtrack.
one of my favorite game of all time! I really wish they would remake it for current gen consoles
this one is such a classic, i wish they would make remake!
Now that was a classic game, that and dark forces!
...the emperor will be impressed...i loved every single tattoo i got in this game...beats x wing by a long shot...not because of the mechanics but because of the feel you have while playing...
I remember this game I used to play this at my parents friends house on their pc
I used to have this game back then, but I kinda sucked at it, yet I still enjoyed it.
I was 9 or 10 when this game came out ... God I feel old
I would love to get this game again. Any issues or anything I should know to play this on a new pc running WIndows 7?
If you have the MS-DOS version, then DOSBox is your friend.
If you have the Win95 version, there are lots of fixes around for playing it on Win7.
absolutely loved this game! thank you very much!
I own CD copy I want my kids to play. How do I get to work in Windows 10.
Loved that this game featured Thrawn, my favorite EU character, in such a prominent role.
@MetalJesusRocks haha thanks for replying and keep up the good videos buddy!
METAL JESUS WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE STARWARS BATTLEFRONT GAMES????
Loved this game (collectors cd edition) needs to be remastered for certain.
Watching this in 2020, MJR looks exactly the game just has a beard
@ProjectReality64 - Whoa. You're making me blush! :)
I don't remember if Thrawn was a traitor and had what he deserves. But I remember perfectly how my fellas just shouted "Stop the charade" and then boom! every imperial ship was against me.
I loved Dark Forces 2:Jedi Knight. Still one of my favorite single player experiences.
I was just watching supermanerd Jukiya play Mariocart and am here to watch the last zoom through space game I've played
Vice admiral thrawn owns
I have an old Windows 98 set up just for this game!
