I recently won second place in a local painting competition with a space wolf model I painted based on your method. And I am really not that experienced a painter. Thanks a lot for these tutorials!
@@commanderdante3185 thanks, but it was VERY local (30entries) and with constraints. Random model, random 6 colors. Got lucky and received a light blue and yellow ochre together with a Space Marine... easy choice 👌
Dude youre killing it with these tutorials. Please by all means keep them coming. Im painting Fists as well, and its really interesting and inspiring to see your methods in such detail.
Tried this out with Word Bearers, and it worked amazing. I used the following paint layers. Stipple Gal-Vorbak red base -> Stipple 1-1 mix Gal Vorbak red/Word Bearers red over the base similar to how you did your zamesi desert layer -> Word Bearers Red -> Contrast Then glazed back up in a similar manner, only difference was adding an even brighter layer of VERY thinned down Wazdakka red on top for a final bolder highlight on the extremes of the model. Fantastic method of painting you've shown and even though they look good on camera this effect looks even better in person.
Hello Richard, these tutorials are great. I like how you’re showing different methods, tools ie airbrush, oils, or without, using contrast instead and stippling.
There can never be enough Imperial Fists tutorials. Really looking forward to your future contrast videos as I'm eager to see how good that new colour is and I may use on my own army.
Amazing stuff and aweseome results! Now, to all people who say they deliberately won't use any oils or enamels or airbrushes: That's fair, but if you can, do yourselves a favour and get these materials. Otherwise, you actively and consciously make work harder and more time-consuming for yourselves without any real benefit. This one is worth stepping out of your comfort zones. The first step may be scary, granted, but once you've got the first little bit of the hang of it, you'll realise that not using those tools and materials is like consciously tying one arm behind your back, with respect to both time and quality. Experiment, take the plunge, and learn. If you can and your finances allow for a half-decent airbrush, do it.
I've watched 5-6 videos today on painting Imperial Fist and your unique technique delivers some truly amazing results. Well done! Thank you for sharing.
Holy moly I swear this video taught me something new just about every single minute. Just extremely inspiring stuff. Going to have to brainstorm ways to apply it to the Alpha Legion I'm starting...
I love this tutorial. Will try the same stipple method, but with oil washes. Would be great to see how you tackle a tank, either with an airbrush or with regular bruses. Would also be cool to see how you would tackle different legions, to get inspiration for future projects.
I love the strategy for yellow used in this! They look great! This actually has me inspired to paint something grimdark yellow, even though Ive got nothing that really wants to be yellow! lol
As well as using matte varnish to seal the weathering powder, you can also use a squirt of isopropyl alcohol. It's super important not to touch the model afterwards, as it will strip paint, but a light spray will soak into the pigment, dries fast, and kinda 'soaks into' the paint below helping adhere it.
As usual high quality tutorial from you. Thanks again sharing your knowledge Richard. I start thinking about painting yellow….🙃 My AoD box arrived yesterday with a Rhino and a Kratos. A lot of stuff to paint and try some new colors. Thanks for the motivation you gain with your videos. Cheers to everyone.
Crikey you’re not wrong about having to work fast with the contrast shading/medium stage. I swapped to Shyish purple for my emperors children, following your technique. Was surprised at how quickly I needed to try and shift it! Mixed results for first time haha.
Very thorough and approachable tutorial, great work! I struggle with stuff like consistent light indication, so the useful tidbits throughout the video are really valuable. I recently finished a (slightly converted) heresy chaplain, really proud of it, first time i tried NMM (using the Sotek Green actually), to middling degrees of success. For the plume I found a gradient from Screamer Pink up to Evil Sunz Scarlet with some Carroburg Crimson for the inbetween steps works really nicely, especially since I tend to go quite muted with my overall tones and finish. The shading on the yellow armor looks really good, and boy, that Bolter is something else... kinda makes me wanna try ImpFists myself... Once I finish all my other WIPs...
I really like your painting style, you had painting lot’s of Space marines now, I would like to see your painting Genstealer maybe in the oldschool colour range. Keep up your good work, I will hope you have the time
Great video! And a fantastic result! You sir made painting yellow easy! :) Although im making my age of darkness into Night Lords.. man i can't wait to get my box! :D
so wonderful!! so interessing, pls continue to show how to paint if!!! i'm waiting for the tanks im yellow without airbrush and with airbrush!!! and if u can with the white too 💪💪 continue like that
I love this style, really unique adds so much character to the normal marines, I know you've done a black templar on here before but I would be really interested on your thoughts or techniques you would use to differentiate between all the black legions in the horus heresy as there's so many black power armour chapters
Really interested in your stippling technique, I tend to try a similar method but using very small fast brush strokes, especially on fabric. Personally I think oils would be much more easy and forgiving than the contrast method. Great tutorial!
Richard, conversely to the point of this (& your last) video, I'd be fascinated to see your approach to painting *purely* with oils. hear me out. as someone who evidently has considerable knowledge of colour theory and an intimate and thorough understanding of miniature painting as we of the tabletop would understand it I'd be fascinated for your thoughts on the process
Would you say this method with the 3 paints followed by Darkoath flesh would work for an EC scheme using something like Phoenician Purple, Xereus Purple, and Genestealer Purple? Fantastic video!
Little bit of threadomancy here, but if you were going to paint a large chunk of models at a time (whole army 40-50, maybe 5-10 at a time) how would you alter your recipe? Would you spend the same amount of time on each guy? or would you cut some corners? Lovely work and I am tempted to go with your color choice for contrast wash (darkoath flesh) over the one I picked up (gharagak's sewer) because the darkoath seems to have a warmer tone to the colder gharagak. Well done boss, lovely paint job!
Great video! I personally love the airbrush method. The new Imperial Fist contrast paint looks like it will be amazing as you say. I have also used Tamiya clear over a metallic zenithal and that works a treat. Richard - have you ever tried using Tamiya panel lining inks on marines? I find they work REALLY well for a super crisp and clean finish if you apply over a layer of varnish.
Looks good brother are you plan on doing any black vehicles soon try my best to make it interesting without a lot of edge highlights but it's hard to avoid especially on tanks find those very difficult
PLEASE please please explain the base and shade colours you would use to do the brush method on Dark Angels 40k utilising the standard caliban green, warpstone glow and Moot green colours....I am desperate to try your method.
Excelent tutorial! Thank you for your job and inspiration! :D I am going to paint Sons of Horus legion, and i would like to use contrast wash method. Should i use some darker contrast paint or Darkoath Flesh will be good?
I really enjoyed watching this! Like the other recent Imperial Fists tutorials as well. I‘m a big fan of your bases. Bit sad that the forgeworld pigments aren’t available anymore. Do you by any chance know which of the Vallejo pigments are closest to the look you‘ve got on your models?
Your videos are a godsend! Thank you for sharing your methods👌 one question, would/do you Matt varnish the entire model at the end or just the base dust area?
Love the controlled use of contrast paint that you've done here, and I'm going to be using that with contrast in the future. :) Would the stippled layers of watered down paint be less spotty if you added a drop of dish soap to the mix? Just a thought.
Superbe .. I'll be watching this on a loop again. I try to make tutorials myself. But watching your awesome video's is blocking me. Your work and english speaking voice are epic compared to my work and pispoor english pronunciation. 😆
I need help! I've been trying to do the stippling and the paint just foams like crazy when I do it. I'm talking bath foam levels here. The ratio is 2:1 water to paint and I've already ruled out the water or the brush as the culprit.
So, the pauldrons with the studs are from a different Mk than the ones with the thick riveted trim? Im getting very confused by all the different Mk. of Astartes armour! Like, Im imagining now that different legions are likely to have different Mk armours as well, especially in the 30k Heresy time period? Ugh. I'm using the Forge World decals rather than the ones that come in the box. A few coats of Micro Set should sort them out, but if you are still getting creases, then before the decals are dry but after an hour or so of sticking them on, roll over them with a cotton bud (not rub, roll!). It will remove any air bubbles and flatten them down.

Anyone could take that colour scheme and, using a paint brush, do it in one third of the time. And then you use an undiluted contrast paint to work it in the same fashion as an oil paint and whinge again that the oil paint would have been easier. 3. Look up the definition of a glaze and a wash. Because undiluted contrast paint is not and never was meant to be a wash. You could have used Agrax Earthshade or Griffin Sepia for washes and taken your time in their use and application. The whole point of the video as I gleaned it from the title was how to paint without airbrush and oils. Not how to substitute them. Your yellow glaze was not even close. It was opaque going onto the armour and opaque on the mixing palette. 4. Finally, and I do acknowledge that this part is to taste, but your secondary work like highlight and chipping is flawed. How is it that the highest point of the model, the crest on the helmet does not get light highlights on the flat. It is the highest most exposed part of the model to the light source. In the mean time, why rhinox hide for the chipping. It is getting tiring watching artists decide that battle wear is appropriate on the armour and then show chipping that would suggest rust. Well no, read the lore. The suits are ceramic in nature and the colour of the suit is not painted on but impregnated throughout the suit. There is no metal to rust. Further, this is an elite unit and so their weaponry gets attention daily and after a battle. There is no rust on the barrel because they don't want the weapon to disintegrate in their hand from use. If a modern infantry soldier is used to cleaning and caring for his weapon then monastic monks would be fanatical about it. p.s. The sergeant is not equipped properly. He would not be carrying a heavy bolter. They would be issued to the troopers as it is the sergeant's job to direct their fire and control the balance of the troops. Also he gets to look good with bolt pistol, sword and Marvin the Martian head crest.
Hahahaha, amazing! This is a brilliant troll post, either that or you're a bit stupid. The confidence you give to your ignorance is beautiful. This did not require hours to do, you don't understand what a wash or a glaze is, everything you commented is wrong! That includes the sergeant weapons!
Seriously dude? You run a tutorial demonstrating painting techniques that do not require an airbrush where you stipple on heavily watered down paint and lament in the first four minutes at least five times it is not as fast as an airbrush? If you are worried about speed then you could have simply done two parts water to the paint and simply layered the paint onto the model choosing how much of the shade you left. Further you would probably have achieved a smoother finish and more quickly than an airbrush. The point at which I stopped the play was 4:03 and you had just begun to stipple on the yellow. I will watch through because it is as important to see the bad styles as the good ones. But based on the finish from the undercoats I don't hold much hope for the balance of the work.
I recently won second place in a local painting competition with a space wolf model I painted based on your method. And I am really not that experienced a painter. Thanks a lot for these tutorials!
