You guys really should connect with him and go and try to find the GoPro. That would make a great video for this channel. I've gone diving in local ponds trying to find lost items for people and it is a lot of fun but visibility usually sucks.

Cool and energetic kid! It's people like that is the reason why I'm going for my instructor status. Their face expression is priceless when you expose them to a whole new world! Pre COVID I gave my wife and son dive training for Christmas and after they finished the online class, they had to do half of a day or until the instructor was comfortable of hands on classroom, second half of the day or again until the instructor was comfortable of doing their skills in a pool, and one day in open water.

Nice video. Fun and relaxing. They used a similar technique to search around, that we do to find wrecks here. We usually tie to an anchor chain at the bottom and do a circular search pattern. Visibility is often low here. Cool to an experienced diver helping out a newcomer to the sport.

I wear Hollis semi-dry suit. (Not straight dry suit) but I add shark skin chill proof layer on first then put semi-dry.. works awesome in 40’s degrees in RI waters in winter. I stayed under for 1 hour. The only problem is my hands and feet getting cold first after 30 minutes. So it only way I can afford. Drysuit are super expensive for me, but I am very happy what I have for cold water dive here.

The decision making aspect of this is strikingly similar to aviation where what's known as "get thereitis" has killed many pilots who get so focused on getting to their destination they didn't just do the prudent thing and get a hotel for the night instead of flying in marginal weather or when tired, sick, it got dark, something broke on the plane, ect. At his age to be mature enough and frankly emotionally strong enough to resist the plan continuation bias and self pressure to find the gopro and instead decide to not get back in when he wasn't feeling right and then also encourage the other guy to stop when he could tell he was at his limit too a was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen tbh.

I did my OW in 1 night and 3 days. I showed up at the DC and the guy asked me if I had finished the theoretical portion and I had no idea what he was talking about. Apparently there was a breakdown in communication and they were supposed to have sent me the book but hadn’t. That night we watched some videos and studied. Next morning after a quiz they took us out for some dives in confined waters. Did the same for two more days and at the end of the 3rd day I got my cert.

Regarding the one day confined dives things, I did a PADI course and while I did the theory by myself online, I did have the option, along with my dive buddy, of doing the pool skills in one day. We ended up discussing it together and doing it over 2 days instead, especially as we weren’t in a massive hurry due to it being a major public holiday.
I do love how excited he was though as a new diver. I just hope that he now finds the GoPro, just to add to the happy factor.

Coming up too fast and having chest pain... I would think indicates the bends. With no decompression chamber around, and for immediate relief, I would think the best thing to do would be to go back down and slowly come back up following your decompression stops. Obviously it would have been best if they had a buoy with a shot line. If off course he held his breath and didn't breath out properly as he ascended, that could be something else. We were taught, if you have poor visibility or no reference, you ascend no faster than the smallest bubbles.

I did a lot of diving in Egypt and we used to get excited about seeing them and taking photos. Lionfish were also prized when I had a marine aquarium. This takes a bit to get my head round.
