    I live right outside of fennimore wi and I have to say I’ve been wanting you two to review this video since I found it, a couples weeks after I began watching you two. You both have inspired me! I found your channel in June of this year. Since then I have quit smoking, started working out, got my asthma almost completely under control, and as of august 27th I am an open water scuba diver! More so, my 10 year old son became obsessed with your videos, along with Jonathan Bird of course. He just completed his swimming lessons and is dead set on getting his junior open water next year. Just want to say THANK YOU BOTH for what you do. We never would’ve discovered this passion without you. I was terrified of any water I couldn’t see the bottom of. Look at me now. Woody - as someone who doesn't like caving or deep water, the reason someone like me can say "I would never want to do this" is that I could not handle the feeling of being trapped. Of being somewhere and not being able to leave when I wanted. Maybe it's tied to control issues, I don't know. The sensation of being surrounded by so much rock/water is too much for me to handle psychologically. That being said, I love watching professionals who execute their craft well and safely, even if it's in a situation that I would never want to be in myself. Keep up the awesome work!

    This cave is a lot like many farm caves I've explored here in Kentucky. I have loved the exhausting challenge of crawling with the rock pressing against back and chest. I also love SCUBA. But my mind is blown with the thought of that kind of squeeze UNDERWATER! I'm with Gus though, I want some reward on the other side!

  • @AzazelGrimshadow
    @AzazelGrimshadow ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Dry caving is my poison. I think it's more dangerous when it comes to gravity when there's no water. I've explored lava tubes and they often are sloped. Some of them can just just drop into a vertical cliff. Imagine going either head first so you can see where you're going but it's downhill, or going feet first and not seeing that there's a potential cliff in front of you. With water I think it's easier to explore places like this. There's always a risk of collapse but there's signs that you can look for on unstable rock. Love you guys. No water for me but I love watching your content.

    I'm not a cave diver, but I've watched many videos on all types of locations and this one looks pretty rough even for a vet no? The entire thing looks like a restriction and the entrance has a lot going on. Ironically I think a cave like this would give me way more anxiety than something advanced like Eagle's Nest. Maybe that's the inexperience talking, but in a place like Eagle's Nest at least from what I've learned you get to descend through the hole at your own pace and it blows up into a ballroom with 2 directions to choose from. This entrance is flowing hard and goes straight from the land to a heavily restricted cave instantly. There's no buffer or balance, the entire thing is claustrophobic and doesn't seem too enjoyable for a casual dive

    As a Wisconsinite, I loved watching you guys react to this! Woody's reaction of "Let's go!" and excitement about the problem-solving aspect of this cave is awesome. XD While the challenge might be its own reward, I feel like you guys might also enjoy the food scene here in WI as a reward -- plenty of beer, wine, cheese, and every imaginable ice cream flavor! Also, Fennimore is about 2 hours from the Wisconsin Dells and there are caves and hiking spots galore there with cool geological features (the WI Dells city itself can be a bit of a tourist trap in the summer though).
    If you really wanted to make a full week trip of it, the 'sea caves' along the lakeshores plus the waterfalls (like Amnicon), gorges and cliffs (Patterson State Park), shipwrecks, and underwater mines and quarries might interest you. Anyways, keep up the amazing, unique content! I've learned so much about scuba diving and how important teamwork and planning are in that environment from you guys. :)

    So wild. This isn’t cave diving, it’s underwater cave crawling. There’s no way I could do this, I’d panic if I didn’t have full range of motion, rock pressing down on me from all sides, I would be hyperventilating. I’m not made for this, but the people who are, much respect to them. Very cool.

    It takes all sorts... I used to enjoy high board diving and people thought I was bonkers... but this... Gawd 'elp us! You have my deepest respect. As a retired psychotherapist I think the ability for people to enjoy this sport may be rooted in differing experiences of birth trauma as the first (and formative) experience of human anxiety. See: Clinical Theology (Frank Lake); Realms of the Human Unconscious (Stasilav Grof); The Trauma of Birth (Otto Rank). Whereas you scooted into life pleasurably without fear, other people are on an exponential curve of anxiety resulting from feeling utterly trapped in a lightless, tightly constricted space, unable to breath, with a sense of fear extending to that of extreme panic at the thought of imminent death. Maybe, maybe not. In any event I consider you very lucky for the capacity to be calm in those extreme circumstances. It has its rewards, is a joy to share and is well beyond me. Thank you.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 ปีที่แล้ว

      Experience in "dry caving" seems that we "work our way up to it" as far as dealing with the extreme experiences and restrictions are concerned... Most of the "true blue died-in-the-wool LIFETIME cavers" I've met had some kind of start with a "tourist cave", one of those curated and well kept affairs. Carlsbad, Bristol Caverns, Linville Caverns (to name a few) and then branched into the sites of "kept natural" types like Mammoth in Kentucky... AND eventually there are a few "adventures" in wilder caves on private property, finding connections with a club or grotto and getting some training. Once you're hooked, you start to explore and expand horizons... AND eventually you get invited for special trips like surveying or exploring when you meet enough fellow cavers. You can still take it about as far (and hard) as you like, but it's ALWAYS "pick your own" as it were. Clubs and Grottos organize the trips, and you sign on with an understanding of the equipment you need to bring, and what can be supplied on request, and who might take charge of specific things, like the survey equipment or the cartographic kit (map making), and any emergency or contingency details... Some groups have very specific arrangements for food on trips, and others are a generic "Camp and bring your own" or "Everyone for themselves" method...
      BUT it's almost always from the larger and easier "walking caves" to special sites involved or connected to the "walk through parts" where you get invited to play with gear and rappel or take on a squeeze... As you build your confidence and try new things, you eventually get really into the gymnastics and the restrictions don't bother you so much... Underground we screw around and have a LOT of laughs. I've shimmied down the ropes head-first just to show off among the antics... It's serious enough safety-conscious... but otherwise, a great time hanging out underground... fooling around, mostly...
      Sure there are places to get truly compressed and contorted, and some of it's fine, especially with a glorious view to be seen beyond... or some hidden connection to another cave... BUT there's no NEED to force yourself. Lots of places just don't require navigating horrible restrictions, and even rappeling and climbing aren't necessarily skills you HAVE to have for caving, though in some few certain places they are requisite to complete the journey...
      I've never once come out of a cave without being absolutely covered from head to toe in MUCK, though... SO the term "dry cave" is dubious at best. You absolutely RUIN clothes and shoes grinding against sand and rock, and frequently face hypothermia for exposure to FRIGID water... BUT the level of hazard and type of cave you face is mostly up to YOUR sense of adventure. LOTS of places underground are simply ENORMOUS. ;o)

    Love your videos. I'm not a diver. Only ever snorkeled a few times but stayed at the surface. No plans to scuba ever.
    Most of the tight space videos I don't have an issue watching. This one was tough. Triggered some claustrophobia big time. 😂

    I’m the same, I’d really want a reward at the other end like some really cool rooms. That Shangri La cave portion woody did up to the No mount part looks fun, but with all no mount in a known cave like this one it would be way more worth it imo if there’s something interesting on the other end. I feel like an exploratory situation would be different though because of the excitement that no one has ever been there, and obviously the fact that you have no idea if there’s something interesting in there or not. That unknown is somewhat of a fear but also a draw at the same time.

    Dive talk!! Does cave diving or diving in general put pressure on the head or jaw? Im asking cause from chemo and radiation my jawline isn’t that strong at all or my head and didn’t know if pressure from being deep underwater affects you. I’ve been in a hyperbaric chandler tons of times. Is it kinda similar to that? 😊
    Love the videos! Miss you guys!!

    My friend and I want to try out diving and eventually get certified, and then eventually work our ways up to cave diving, and I always feel a little comforted when it comes to the idea of restrictions by the fact that I am a really small person, and if everyone else who's usually a lot larger than me can do it, I can do it. Same applies for dry caving, which is what I enjoy! I feel like I would enjoy diving as much as I enjoy hiking.

  • @jbvap
    @jbvap ปีที่แล้ว

    That’s nuts. I’m into dry caving and I don’t like restrictions that narrow in a regular cave. Props to these people that enjoy this! As woody says, a lot of things come with experience!

    Nice video. Thanks for the great content! If you guys haven’t already you should do a video about Parker Turner. He was an FSU volunteer dive instructor and certified cave diver who went into a cave with a few buddies in 1991. On the way out one of the other guys released air bubbles that dislodged limestone rocks which blocked an entry way and trapped Parker and his partner Bill Gavin. They both managed to cram through a hole in the blockage and Bill luckily escaped, but because of the zero viz Parker couldn’t find the guide line and ran out of air, tragically causing his death. Would be interesting to hear your guys thoughts on that situation.

    What surprises me why Woody wants to do it, is that you know its going to be cold. Even in a dry suit. And Woody doesn't like cold.

    • @gayleorner1298
      @gayleorner1298 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the people currently diving there wear wetsuits, not drysuits. Whatever you wear tends to get ripped. I have more bioprene than Woody, so I usually just wear a 3 mm suit to make it easier to get through the CheeseGrater.

    @3:25 "I'm a one-and-done guy"... Woody's not exactly selling himself in the sack...😉😆 But joke aside, I really think this is one of the difference makers in established/experienced cave divers who eventually die in a cave, and those who have a long life cave diving. The drive to test ourselves can cause us to make crucial errors in our decision making.
    By comparison, Woody's like "Cool, this is sweet, now I'm ready to go." And I somehow suspect "Who wants ice cream?" is the first thing he says back at the car. 😄

    That doesn't look fun to me. On the other hand, when I was a kid, I went through a naked mole rat phase where I'd dig 20' tunnels in dry season swamp muck just big enough to worm through and thought it was the greatest thing ever. Now I just imagine it collapsing and being suffocated and being dug up in 5000 years as a bog body for people to gawk at in a museum of stupid ancient people. So I guess I do get the point of doing things that look very unfun and are likely more dangerous than cave diving, but I can't quite get myself into that frame of mind this morning.
