This game was so rare in my neighbourhood as a kid. Never at Walmart. Never at the rental store. So many kids asked the video game rental store owner to buy it and he did. First day it was on the shelf, kids rented it for a weekend not being able to finish it. Eventually some parents started renting it for a week at a time, re-renting it on return. They eventually had a waitlist on the game and told renters they couldn’t re-rent it and could add themselves to the waitlist (legit there was only 1 copy of the game at the store). Anyway, one kid took it and never brought it back. I never got a chance to play it as a kid but regularly went to friends houses who were lucky enough to rent it. Im 31 now and my heart jumped when I saw this remake was being released
I'm 31 as well, and I would constantly rent, and then re-rent this game. I couldn't beat it, but was spellbound by it.
I remember seeing stacks and stacks of unpurchased copies at SEARS

I'd really wish Chrono Trigger would get a remaster like this.
That's all on Square, and I'm sure they want to tread those waters very lightly..
I mean we did get that "remastered" Switch version of Chrono Cross a while ago and to be honest it wouldn't be out of the question for Square to allow "something" to come out for next gen Nintendo consoles should they see the market for such a release. Seeing as they're too busy with their Final Fantasies and Kingdom Hearts i doubt they would bother make any such announcement in the coming years so it's practically an unreachable dream at this moment.
The day a Nintendo Direct reveals a Chrono Trigger remake i'll be crying on the floor while desperately trying not to pass out from the excitment.
Ooh... As a Chrono Trigger fan, I have to disagree with the idea of a remake or even remaster. The game is already a masterpiece; ever heard the saying, "Don't fix what isn't broken"?
@@Loner098 I agree to an _extent_ since that game ended in a rather unnecessarily incomplete way by teasing Magus's search for Schala in what would eventually become the SNES text based game Radical Dreamers and the underwhelming PS1 followup to Chrono Trigger Chrono Cross which only further _ruined_ the incomplete ending of Trigger by practically shoving aside all the sacrifice and struggle Crono and his friends went through to save the world in the first place.
If it were up to me i would remaster Trigger for the only purpose of _retconning_ the original ending with Magus looking for Schala so that Crono and company's adventure through time would actually mean something in the long road without the edgier, melancholic story of Cross which all but destroyed it entirely.
@javiervasquez625 Speaking of Chrono Cross, I'm not sure if I really liked how they basically made Lavos a sentient being. I think I liked it better how Lavos was only seen as a threat rather than a "villain."
Chrono Cross pretty much ends on a cliffhanger with the cancelation of Chrono Break (which probably would've ended the Chrono series) after the development tried to go work on Final Fantasy 11 or just left in favor of freelance work.
As for Magus' unresolved search for Schala, it made me question who is Square's worst video game story writer: Masato Kato or Tetsuya Nomura.
When this game first came out, I didn't have a Super Nintendo so I had to play it on PC and later on the Wii E-shop. Even then, I didn't know what to think about it because it wasn't like any other Mario game before it. Now, it's kinda grown on me and become a classic so I'm very excited to jump on this remake. It looks really good, and the added animations add to the charm. Update…I have started playing, and it’s worth it!
I first played it on SNES9X on an underpowered late 90s PC that could barely run an SNES emulator lol
I’ve played for about seven hours, and I absolutely love it!!! The only thing is they made it too easy, with the charge up meter. Also that you can switch your party in battle makes it where you’ll never lose a battle. It needs a hard mode

The post game content i think is difficult enough for a good challenge for now. But I do agree with the hard mode addition
@@friendshipcreed there is a super mario armaggeddon mod that makes the game way too hard but adds a lot of content from pokemon to final fantasy hopefully the modding team can find a way to mod it into this remake in like 20 years lol
Skimming through your review I find that, with a title like Brutally Honest, you ought to have more critique in there. This was mostly just an 11 minute talk about nothing. About things we already know, about information objective to the game. Things like what the story is about or how peach is a healer. I'm not sure what it does in a review.
I'm glad this was brought to the switch in remake glory. some of the adds to the combat system have been fun for me...triple attack sequences are so amusing and the remastered OST hits me in the right places. I've got 5 of the stars so far. Definitely hoping to beat it this time because I didn't get to beat the original
This was one of my favorite childhood games. I'm loving it so much. Hit me with a wave of nostalgia. I've been wanting this for so long. I remember playing in the basement on a CRT TV. Such a great game. I doubt they will add anything and they don't have to. But I hope we get a hard mode and a true sequel one day.

All special attacks damage all enemies (via a shockwave effect), so a hard mode would simply be the way the original game worked. How childish.
Personally I would have liked to see the game expanded. Star Hill has always felt like the result of rushed development. It feels..unfinished. I enjoy the faithful remake, but taking something good, but short, and adding MORE seems like an obvious decision.
More obviously would have been nice, but if I'm being honest, I'd prefer a sequel where new ideas are added versus getting them here. I had the game back in 1996, so I'm a long time fan, and it would be nice to have some extras. But I'm fine with them using this as a test to see if a sequel is logistical.
@@travisflint7616 I would have loved a sequel to this game all those years back in 1996 but since it never panned out i saw that as Nintendo's explicit admittance that Super Mario RPG was a "one time thing" for the sake of expanding the franchise with a Final Fantasy inspired RPG title that would ultimately represent a simple staircase step in the franchise becoming more popular and marketable.
Given how the remake was practically a 1 to 1 faithful remaster of the original game it only made me ever more reassured that this is also a one time thing for old fans's sake and without any intention to expand upon the original game's storyline.

FF7 Remake: cough cough
I always saw this at Blockbuster on the SNES shelves and thought it looked so foreboding with the grim red backdrop of Bowser’s Castle. I’m happy now to finally check it out in all its remade glory.
It’s so hard to explain how little I care about this remake… yet, Mario RPG is one of my favourite games of all time, and if they JUST RELEASED THE ORIGINAL then I would lap it up in an instant.
I don’t care for the art style, and a big part of why I would want to play Mario RPG would be for the feeling of nostalgia, which doesn’t come with this remake, and is certainly not worth the £50 price tag.
I played this game right after i played star ocean the second story r. I played both originals when i was younger. I found myself getting a little bored worh super mario rpg because bit is way to easy. Not to mention short and linaer. I dod enjoy it, just nowhere as much as i enjoyed Star ocean the second story r. Its also 10 dollars cheaper.

I didn’t get a chance to play it when it came out. My parents raised me in a knock-off Jehovah’s Witnesses, so I wasn’t allowed to play video games. As a cope, I looked for reasons to hate others who had it. As an adult I’ve dealt with the envy trigger, and enjoying this remake is helping a lot!!! Basic for an RPG, but very enjoyable 💪💪🙏

True especially since this is a remake not a remaster. All the assets are new, built from the ground up except maybe for the old music.
I own the original so I don't have any need for this. But people who don't can legally play it now. Honestly the real hope is that this leads to a sequel!

@@wpp6986 Why would I pay for a game I already own? Also I only play modern games on pc. I don't own any current gen consoles. But even if I did I wouldn't buy a remake unless I didn't have the original.

I think the most common response to this mindset is for the new generation to experience said game if they never once had the chance to play the original...or they can just, you know, emulate a video game (if they have something like a solo (good) computer) without having to pay even a penny.

It was weird and rare before so it had a mythical charm to it. It’s an okay game.
I'm deep into Weapon World, and it's the first time I've had to go back and grind to level up. that alone makes it a lot more enjoyable than going back to play the original
If you want a remake that was done right, look no further than to Star Ocean: The Second Story R. That game is just phenomenal! Growing up with Super Mario RPG, I loved it, but I admit to being a little disappointed with how they handled some aspects of this remake, such as the updated combat system. Nintendo made an already relatively short RPG even shorter and faster, something I am not too thrilled about. I wish they gave us the option to disable some of the new combat features. Nintendo should take a page out of Square's book on how to make a masterful remake! Ironic I say that because Squaresoft did the original Super Mario RPG.

@@Hoshi_no_Ren You got proof they were really involved in Super Mario RPG Remake's development? From my understanding it was all Nintendo doing the development with Square signing off on the licensing. The original director didn't even have a part in the remake.
@@scottgauley7722 ArtePiazza developes this remake, which is Square's folks, sort of like Alphadream is Nintendo's company, you can Google it

What? Who's against the game's presentation? It looks amazing and I can bet that most are glad that they kept the style of the characters as they are unique and fit perfectly into the game, 3D models and all.
And wth does he mean with no updated animations?
I never got to finish the game since I had to give my snes away to cousins overseas in the Philippines. I was stuck at sunken ship. Flash forward today I got my first star and the game is a wonderful remake with snes soundtrack
I just hope , this leads to a sequel since the creator wanted it.
I played the original emulated on pc and got stuck on the Smithy battle and left off there...
I am a sucker to hd remakes I will totally buy this without a doubt. Waiting for its arrival to my country to order a physical copy! Can't wait!!!

It's no remake, if anything this is a remaster.
A remake has some innovation &/or changes to improve or at least expand the original, such as rewriting the plot or changing core mechanics.
A remaster is just a port with quality of life changes &/or updating graphics and sound, such as bug fixes or smoothing animations out.
Rather have an actual sequel instead of this insultingly lazy cashgrab.

After the Chrono Cross "remaster" you can bet it's never gonna happen.
This is exactly what they should have done with the FF7 Remake. Imagine how much better that would have been.

@@Wileytiger-el6pu I suppose that's fair. It doesn't do too many things differently than the original, but it does pretty it up and add some quality of life improvements.
They added Culex in 2D/3D can fight him twice for me that's enough. Not sure how many other secret fights they could of added.

i seriously do NOT understand the " its to samey" criticism going on with "to imagine what could have been". What did you expect? a FF7 Re-Make presentation? perhaps SMB wonder or SM odyssey aesthetics? Thats like saying: "oh the aesthetics of the thousand year door remake are to samey, we can accept that but we can only think what could have been"
