      Also worth pointing out combat is also way faster in the remake because of how powerful perfect hits are; drastically more damage and aoe than the original.any combat that you get 2 perfect hits on(90% of them for me) end the fight before the enemy even attacks. @@michaellynchyt

      @michaellynchyt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lexoanvil then i probably would've disliked the combat in the original more LMAO. Idk. Some of my gripes with the combat in this game just come from the fact that so many other studios in the industry are doing it so much better. But also, I feel that because the game is so short, the characters don't get developed nearly as much as other square protagonists of the era, making the combat less emotionally rewarding because you aren't AS invested in the story/character arcs yk? If that makes sense. I see where you're coming from though because you're right that it is among the shorter of Square's SNES games

    Nah I’m sorry to harp on this, but Bowser’s Keep as a finale just describes Square’s approach to final stretches in general. Look at Kingdom Hearts. Oh look, there’s Behemoth again. So much fun to fight a defense tank once you’ve figured them out. There’s those demon gargoyle guys again. Here’s a long Fantasia boss. Final boss has like, five phases. That’s not just this game or era, Square has always gambled their finales either being epic or tiring to get through.

      That's not true tho. You're cherry picking. Look at Octopath 2. Look at FF 16. The only one I can think of in "recent" memory that's egregious is FF7R

      Final Fantasy VI, long tower area with a gauntlet of bosses and a really long final one.
      Final Fantasy 3, actually infamous for its final dungeon. Cherry picking, or you just really wanting to dislike this game? We can agree to disagree, but don’t try to put my observation down as cherry-picking when I know my stuff.
      And thank you for FFVII Remake, you gave me another example.

      @robertreturns that's my point tho. You just named a bunch of games that are all PS2 or earlier. This has been mostly done away with these days. That's why I would hope that in a "remake" they might adjust this encounter pacing a bit. It's just a trend I hate. I see it a lot in games and it bugs me. I'm not saying this is the only game that has it.

    I just finished the game the other day and am now working on the post game content so I figure I might as well throw my opinion into the mix. I actually enjoyed the simplicity of the combat. I don’t play very many rpg games though so maybe it’s because it’s easy for an rpg novice like me to pick up and get the hang of fast. I’m completely with you on the puzzles in the 3D space though. It’s so annoying to think you’re lined up perfectly only to find out you’re in front or behind the object because it’s impossible to tell where things are on the screen sometimes. Some of the puzzles also have so far out there solutions that I had to look up the answers to a few of them. It wasn’t terrible, but it felt like a waste of time to learn the solution to the puzzle is something I would never have figured out. The mini game sections were also very meh to me. The mine-cart mini game was very unresponsive to my turns and the waterfall mini game felt like you were moving way too sluggish. Overall I’d rate it an 8/10. Really fun game with great characters and a great soundtrack, but definitely has its fair share of issues.

    Yeah since I've played this game to know all the combat timings the fights were actually really fast and easy since mario jump breaks the game if you spam it all game. If you play again i suggest trying mario basic jump move, as everytime you cast it, it adds damage to the next time you use it. by the end game it hits for over 200 on any enemy type with mario shoes on. It makes mallow not even needed to find weakness as jump is op esp if they weak to jump

    I agree with you with a lot of what you said. Its a solid game, But wouldn't say its worth $70. If you didn't care for the combat, its a big issue, as like other games with unique combat, you either like it or hate it, and if you hate it, its not going to go away. (looking at Legend of Legaia with that one) Even with the added content, this game flew by, Yes, you can add things like the mini games, and the bestiary, but as you said, that's fluff, that shouldn't be an integral part of the game.
    And its definitely an easier game, You can more or less bypass the "tank" mobs with brute force, the game does very much reward you for timing things correctly, but what i also like is that you can't over level yourself too much. Hard cap is 30, and as another reviewer said, you don't really have to grind exp in this game at any point. Just killing what's in your way will keep you mostly leveled where you should be. Also as much as mallow is a mainstay for thought peek, honestly, he's more of a staple for thunderbolt. Earliest, cheapest AOE, which will one shot so many things.
    The also did add a Ton of quality of life features which weren't in the original game. The map feature is great, the special monsters as a good source of frog coins, the new "group" items (bracer, atk, stat removal) were all very welcome. The triple moves were nice, but you do focus on certain ones over others, but then adding the ability to switch party members IN battle, this is huge, and made it much more flexible, letting you start with Geno to boost your chars, then switch to peach or someone else for support or damage etc.
    I also have the added benefit of seeing my young kids play this game, and they are surprisingly adept at the timing.
    Its a good game, $70, maybe not, if it goes on sale for $30 or less, i'd say grab it, the nostalgia and charm makes it worth that price for sure. But compare this to breath of the wild or TOTK for the same price, its just not worth it.

    10:00 Pretty faithful remake since the original game's animations are about as long, though it's necessary for the reactionary combat system. I'd say there are a handful of tanks in the game depending on where you put your stats, though there are arguably as many, if not more glass cannon/frail enemies that either unintentionally destroy themselves or go down in one or two regular hits.

    Honestly none of the things you disliked about the battle system were an issue to me. I am not a fan of most of the RPG genre as a whole and the Mario RPGs have always been the sole exception to it. The addition of action commands to battle are what makes these battles fun to me. I also really don't see how this game's world and characters are "typical Mario fare." You won't find a character like Geno or Smithy in a mainline Mario game. It's usually just Mario vs Bowser, with Peach, Luigi, Toad & the Koopa Troop filling out the other main cast, original character design going entirely into enemies that say nothing and maybe some bosses that have an intro line at most. But there aren't character arcs. Rosalina is the only exception outside the Mario RPGs I can think of.
    The remake was my first time finishing Super Mario RPG as well. But I've been a terminal fan of the Mario RPGs since playing Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door in the 2000s. I tried to play the original SNES game a few times but was ironically turned off by how closer it felt to a typical non-Mario RPG than the Mario RPGs I was used to. A lot of the action command timings felt vague and unclear so I felt more like I was just selecting an attack and then hoping I survived the next turn, which is how I felt about every non-Mario RPG I had played. The remake fixed that imo, the action commands translated way nicer to my muscle memory from early Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, and as a result I had a blast with this adventure. I continue to hope that the memorable characters from these games will eventually get some love from Nintendo in a Mario Kart roster or something. But they don't fit in with the "vanilla" Mario brand so Nintendo will likely never consider it :(

      I'm glad you enjoy it! I wish I was as high on it as you. I'm glad the combat system worked well for you! Also, to the point of Geno and Mallow, sure there aren't characters like that in New mario games. BUT, the things they do in this game (particularly mallow) aren't that interesting or new for a character in the mario universe. However. Back in the 90s it was, so I cut the game slack in that regard. Thanks for watching tho!

  • @deviltheferal892
    @deviltheferal892 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    I enjoyed watching the quality of your review, though I do have to question some of the major points made:
    1. The writing:
    you're actually quite right, this game is just "on the charming side" and really simple other than that, it definitely could have tried to be more if they wanted to... But that's also never really been what mario was about, in the first place. this is super MARIO rpg, it's about Role-Playing as Mario after all. Mario has, in every game with severe story elements, been as plain as milk when it comes to personality. He cares about saving the princess, being nice, helping people, and if none of those are needed at the time, he likes to goof off, it makes sense he wouldn't have dramatic story moments like in chrono trigger.
    2. The combat
    you linger a long time on your critique of the combat feeling slow, unsatisfyingly tanky enemies, and that Mallow feels like a requirement due to his unique thought-peek ability. To break that down, i'll address each part seperately at first. Mallow is indeed the only character to have thought-peek, but the game is designed in such a way that you are at practically no point required to find out elemental weaknesses for any kind of character outside of a few specific bosses being a difficulty curve... the game is excessively easy, and you'd no doubt notice that if you had used anyone except Mallow, who is infamously bad at dealing damage outside of his few abilities. That brings me to the next point, which is the slow-pace of the fights. Your playstyle likely dragged out your time requirements due to approaching it so methodically, and it highlights the difference in game design versus your personal expectations. SMRPG in both forms is meant to be a light-hearted, easy RPG with just enough challenge to engage the player, but never so much it becomes frustrating, and it's meant to be typically breezed through. Your playstyle design of methodically checking for weaknesses and using special move after special move (which take longer than normal attacks, mind you) are antithetical to the core design. Which is why I wanna highlight:
    You are kinda playing the game wrong. Not by being bad or anything like that, but by bringing your preconceived expectations on a raised pedestal and holding the game to THAT standard instead of discovering what the game really wants and has to offer. this game isn't a theatrical drama, it doesn't play it's story seriously, it keeps combat light (and fast, mind you, don't forget how traditionally slow most turn-based RPGs are, especially ones from that time) and essentially any arrangement of characters is able to beat the game. You chose the weakest ensemble by almost ensuring Mallow was part of the frey, shot yourself in the knee-caps with preconceptions of what the game should have been before you experienced it, and it soured your experience because you now didn't experience SMRPG, but rather only how SMRPG failed to meet your imaginative version of itself... I realize it sounds harsh to say directly, but I have no ill intent with explaining it that way.
    A minor nitpick as well: you say in literally the same breath that there is too much inaction, up to 30 seconds between player actions, AND that the ability to block is annoying... you know, player action? to keep the player engaged? It's literally a distortion of your perspective to enable critical arguments that wouldn't be possible to make otherwise. the only encounter that comes close to that height of inactivity is something optional that I don't know wether or not to spoil for you.
    3: anti-aliasing
    yup, its really noticeable at times, they could have done better, especially since it's most noticeable on the pre-rendered cutscenes.
    4: Music
    The music is amazing and I'm happy that you recognize it. It's literally iconic, and peak content from square at the time, remade with love now.
    Closing critique:
    Your rant about the boss rush at the end of the game "disrespecting your time" really does show how you dislike the game due to specifically expectations. What is an RPG from a gameplay perspective, but to gain progress, defeat tougher baddies until you can save the day? a boss rush is by theme anti-thetical to the idea of wasting your time, by completely cutting out the middle management in between. You have entered the weapon factory dimension after defeating Exor (and Boomer, just before him) and it's supposed to be extremely apparent in tone, content and theme that unfortunately, things aren't so light-hearted here. You're no longer playing by playful mario rules, you're in Smithy's territory now. He has the strongest and best resources there, and it's a treat to find boss after boss in there. Given, not all bosses were made equal, and that's fair to critique, but it's certainly not a slog as you repeatedly describe. Furthermore, from all the footage you show during this review, I can't help but notice... You are incredibly under-leveled at all times. You made the game harder for yourself by picking your weakest assembly possible, then avoided fights because they weren't fun to do when you were inhibiting your own team, and it made the rest of the game slower as a result, further discouraging you from continuing. While this flaw is definitely at the very least partially on SMRPG, it's also definitely partially on you. You didn't take the time to learn what the game could be...
    Also, based on your descriptions of impatience, I don't see how you could enjoy final fantasies from that time period in the slightest, god knows they're slower than this game.
    I have a bias for favor of this game, And it'd be improper for me to neglect admitting to that, but I certainly have critiques for this game myself. I think it's a loving remake that is TOO faithful to the original experience (Peach is treated like an object by all the men in power, to be collected, wed away, kissed, safe-kept, without ever having her own input recognized or respected, they definitely could have allowed her room to be the independent yet reliable ruler she canonically is) and all in all, my base complaint is that they charge too much for it. Even as a loving long time SMRPG fan, the remake wasn't worth 50 pound or 60 dollars... I paid movie levels of money per hour of content in the game (100%ed it on livestream with just over 15 hours total) And it's really not engaging enough mentally or time-wise to earn such a steep price tag. I love the remake as it is, but I do not recommend buying it at full price. it should have been 24.99 at most, it's almost an entitlement on nintendo's behalf to charge this steeply for an experience already designed at heart.
    For the next time you tackle a new game, be mindful to be more open, don't expect your next game to be like X, discover it for what it presents itself as first.
    Kindly
    Devil

      Look buddy, I read all of what you had to say and when it comes to the combat, I just disagree with the entire implication of what you're saying. I did experiment with other party varieties, they just sucked. Whenever I wasn't targeting weaknesses, combat went even slower. I don't go into any game with "preconceived notions" of what it should be. I Engage with games on their own terms and try to figure out what I'm supposed to do through that framework. Also, I criticize boss rushes in every game. I think they're fucking stupid. They annoy the shit out of me and just get really stale really fast. But it's especially annoying in a game that's sub 15 hours. Because percentage wise, it's like 15% of the experience.

      @@michaellynchytregardless though to be fair the way you played the game must have been wrong, for me personally that game was super fun my only issue with it being that it's WAY too easy especially compared to the original SNES version of SMRPG, most fights with enemies ended with one attack due to me being overpowered and the splash damage (which is a dumb mechanic imo) killing everyone instantly, so idk what you did to make your playthrough slow af but me and everyone else I know complain the game is way too easy and battles end too fast and pose no challenge whatsoever
      Edit: also to add to my point about the game being too easy af, you made a whole point saying that the boss rush towards the end of the game was "disrespecting your time" my guy, if you just leveled up a bit more and had a better setup, that whole boss rush can be finished legitimately almost less than 5 minutes I kidd you not, Mallow isn't that great and the weaknesses aren't actually that important really, you probably would have had a better time having Mallow out of the party for the rest of the game, most people always just gets rid of him as soon as Bowser joins the party lol and with peach being the main healer, you really don't need Mallow
      So in a nutshell you kinda made your playthrough a lot sluggish and harder because you just felt like you needed Mallow for weaknesses and shit because you were trying to be strategic about a simple RPG game that really isn't bad at all but what do I know? I'm just a guy who also played the game and had a far better time myself

    I havent played the remake I just watched people do so and I am someone who still owns the physical copy of the original game. This one looks WAY too easy. Firstly in the original timed hits never aoed everything, just made that one thing take more dmg. Secondly, your party consisted of 3 people. There was no swap out mechanic which ruined the game imo, and no triple attack. Thing I have noticed is people spend WAY too much time casting spells when physical dmg is the main source of dmg always had been. Lastly, something people didnt notice in game is that when you level up and pick a stat, there is ALWAYS one of the 3 stats that gets a big big boost. Like physical dmg going from 32-35 as compared too the other being just a boost of 1 point. Using that makes your party WAY stronger and thus quicker in battles. Also Mallow sucks, my party will always be Mario/Geno/Peach. Mario and Peach have the strongest hits in the game...yes Peach hits harder then Bowser once she gets the Frying Pan. Important thing too remember is this came out back before the internet dominated everything, if you got stuck you didnt get too look up the solution. Ive got hundreds of hours in this game and I will always love it.

    I think it's an 8 out of 10 game. It is the first ever Mario RPG, but I think it should have done more to make it a modern game. It has cut scenes, but no voice acting. When you're in a cut scene and see the character's mouth move, it's a little jarring when you don't hear the dialogue. Another thing about this game is that it's short, especially for an RPG. I know it's supposed to be a game to bring in beginners into the genre, but Paper Mario games are typically double in length compared to this game. I don't mind short games, but this game for what it is felt almost too short. The difficulty of this game is also easy. Again, it's a game to bring more people to RPG's, but not having an option for a hard mode is a missed opportunity. When I first played Paper Mario, I didn't beat all the bosses the first try. In this game, I did. Yet again, I have played more Mario RPG's at this point compared to when I first played the Paper Mario games. The action commands were not as diverse as they are in Paper Mario, and it left the game less interesting than Paper Mario to me. Every character in Paper Mario, especially TTYD, has different action commands for each of their attacks. It's a good game, but it's not as hype as people make it out to be.

      I agree. Having not played the original, I can't fully speak to it. But, this definitely feels like it has the bones of an SNES game through and through. For better and for worse!

    In another dimension where they changed the last 3 hours to make it less "tedious": "they made the game far too easy."

    • @michaellynchyt
      @michaellynchyt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I disagree. I would far rather just have one or two challenging "skill-check" bosses prior to smithy as opposed to six or seven push overs. The game as it stands right now is far too easy. It's just time consuming.

    This game is designed to be the first rpg kids play to learn how they work, hint the shallow story depth and length. Also it's super easy by design. Stats are very obvious, the game(this go around) gives you a marker to show you when to push the button. I am sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it as much as many others

    • @michaellynchyt
      @michaellynchyt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not saying that the design of the game is "bad". It's just the combat encounters specifically. Also, there's some puzzles in this game that kids under the age of 10-12 are gonna get stuck on and just quit and go back to tik tok. I, also, not once said it was too easy. What video did you watch?

    I get this as an opinion piece, but you are nit picking a game that isn't supposed to be hard.
    Yes, it's easy. It was easy for me because I beat it countless times throughout my life.
    A hard mode would be a good add, but in the end, it's still a mario level of difficulty

    • @michaellynchyt
      @michaellynchyt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't want it to be hard. My personal preference for RPGs is just for it to have more depth. Persona isn't "hard" but it has enough depth to be fun.

    • @johnmehlman5195
      @johnmehlman5195 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its mario, what more "depth" could they have without ruining the charm of the game@@michaellynchyt

    • @michaellynchyt
      @michaellynchyt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @johnmehlman5195 there's plenty of turn-based combat systems that are "deep" without being hard or difficult. Look at Persona, Ni No Kuni (not technically turn-based), Pokémon, etc.

      It's definitely simple. But what I'm saying in the video is that the combat wasn't fun for me. Not because of its simplicity, but because it's not what I look for in my turn-based RPG's. I'm glad you enjoyed it though! that's great!

      I don't see why it shouldn't be honestly, it's a complete game with a lot of replay value and is an improvement over the original in just about every way that I don't see how it's unreasonable for it to be full price. I have yet to hear a good argument as to why the game shouldn't be full price.
