Midnight Rambler was the last Rolling Stones song that Brian Jones recorded with them in the Spring 1969. You Got The Silver was the second last Brian Jones recorded with them in February 1969.
Charlie Watts man. Begins with that simple swing on the high-hat and the snare. Speeds it up, adds some flairs with the high-hat. Slows it down briefly before transitions to double-time at 1:31 with alternating hands. While doing that signature Watts snare drum style (doesn't hit the high hat / snare at the same time, there-by accenting the snare). Slows down with the groove again and by 2:24 is playing back on one hand for the high hat with plenty of energy with the snare. For the finale he ditches the high-hat and goes for the ride and crashing cymbal work. Simple, effective, drum work.

I have never been much of a Stones fan - but I do respect their body of work. This is one of the tracks that all the news stories were pointing to. Listening with "new ears" today. I'm a musician myself, and boy did that tempo change jump out at me. Great stuff.

I got this record when I was 14, and as with many Stones songs, I couldn't understand half of what Jagger was saying - I didn't care what the square root of 64 was, I wanted to know the lyrics to the songs on "Let it Bleed"! (And "Sticky FIngers," and "Beggar's Banquet," and ESPECIALLY the completely incomprehensible lyrics on "Exile on Main Street"). Eventually I found a couple of songbooks that had accurate lyrics to most of those albums, and then somebody invented the Internet and finally I knew what Mick was singing on "Casino Boogie" from "Exile".
I don't know if The Stones will tour anymore but as far as front men go Mick is truly a one off, we'll not see anyone like him again I think. And even if we do they'll just be copying his style and not be original. Back when both they and The Beatles were new to America I never dreamed They would still be performing live over 50 years later! Hell, I never thought much more ahead than the next day!

What makes this tune amazing... I mean... what really separates it out ... tempo. To be able to handle dramatic tempo changes... playing this live must have been a nightmare. I saw them when the screwed it up... and when they nailed it cold... but this song is a risk... which makes it that much better.
100% agreed! If you listen to various live versions, especially from different shows throughout the 1969 tour of the U.S., you can hear that they often had a hard time with it. (If you search for Rolling Stones Killer Festival on here, you can probably find a very good bootleg of the tragic Altamont concert - what must this song have sounded like in a crowd of 300,000 with hundreds of Hells Angels randomly brutalizing, and actually murdering, fellow concert-goers?) Even during the 3 (or was it 4?) shows taped for the "Get Yer Ya-Yas Out!" live LP at Madison Square Garden, most of which you can find on TH-cam, once they get to the "quiet" part - where the bass drops out on the record version - they kind of struggle to hit those beats at the same time. Still glorious, and this is one of my favorite Stones tunes ever.

My best friebd played guitar & harmonica & we would jam on his back porch. I loved to sing, thinking that remembering all the words in order was all there was to it. He gave me my first Harmonica,Koher Blues Harp; I learned by ear, no-one gave harmonica lessons. I was inspired by Black Sabbath's The Wizard & Alice Cooper's Generation Landslide, still I consider based on length of playing begining to end. The Rolling Stones Midnight Rambler is the ultimate Blues Harp song. A nod to Little Walter Jagger's said inspiration.
The live version from 1969 was what heard first. It was on Hot Rocks. I was really amazed! Got the Live Album later. I eventually got the studio version . And album.
